slogan: You & Us.

"In January 1997, Christoph Meili, a night watchman at the Union Bank of Switzerland (as UBS was then known), found the bank historian destroying archives compiled by a subsidiary that had extensive dealings with Nazi Germany, in direct violation of a recent Swiss law (adopted on December 13, 1996) protecting such material. UBS acknowledged that it had "made a deplorable mistake", but maintained that the destroyed archives were unrelated to the Holocaust. Meili was suspended from his job at the security company that served UBS, following a criminal investigation into whether his whistleblowing had violated bank secrecy laws."

2.) Citigroup - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citigroup

slogan: "Live Richly."

"Citigroup was also accused of helping Enron and other companies hide their losses by loaning money to those companies in a special way that would reduce liabilities visible on the balance sheet. In May 2004 the company agreed to pay $2.65 billion, or $1.64 billion after tax, to settle a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of purchasers of WorldCom securities."

4.) HSBC Holdings - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSBC_Holdings

slogan: The world's local bank.

"Hexagon symbol
This was originally adopted by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation as its logo in 1983. It was developed from the bank’s house flag, a white rectangle divided diagonally to produce a red hourglass shape. Like many other Hong Kong company flags that originated in the 19th century, the design was based on the cross of Saint Andrew."

"In August 1914, Henry P. Davison, a Morgan partner, traveled to England and made a deal with the Bank of England to make J. P. Morgan & Co. the monopoly underwriter of war bonds for England and France. The Bank of England became a "fiscal agent" of J. P. Morgan & Co. and vice versa. "Its headquarters, the Deutsche Bank Twin Towers are located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany."

"On September 11, 2001, the Deutsche Bank building, located at 130 Liberty Street in New York City and acquired two years earlier as part of the merger with Bankers Trust, was damaged beyond repair as a result of the terrorist attack. Large pieces of debris from the Twin Towers hit the Deutsche Bank building and sliced a large hole into its center, destroying its main entrance and lobby.

Deutsche Bank sued their insurance carriers to require them to pay out the claims, and in December 2004, Deutsche Bank settled with the insurance carriers and then sold the building to the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Corporation.

Deutsche Bank relocated most of its NYC Area units to 60 Wall Street - acquired earlier in 2001 and formerly occupied by J.P. Morgan Chase."

"In 2004, a California jury decided that Bank of America had illegally raided the Social Security benefits of a million customers. The jury awarded damages that could exceed $1 billion. Bank of America had been accused of withholding customers' direct deposit social security benefit payments to cover debts in cases where a debt is owed to the bank by the customer (e.g.: due to an overdrawn account, various service fees, etc.); this practice violates California state law. The suit claims that Bank of America knew about the law and concealed the facts of this law from their customers. Bank of America counters that it only followed standard industry practice of using monthly pre-authorized direct deposits to cover overdrafts and the like. The case is on appeal."

"Giannini also sought to build a national bank, expanding into most of the western states as well as into the insurance industry, under the aegis of his holding company, Transamerica Corporation."

Running the Numbers PostFri Jan 12, 2007 9:53 pm  Reply with quote

If we add up the assets of the top 10 wealthiest banks, it totals:

$12,597,000,000,000.

This is such an abstract number that it's tough to comprehend.

If we divide it by the population of the Earth, say 7,000,000,000 (7 billion), we see that if divided equally among the population of the Earth, each person would receive roughly $1800!

The current US National Debt stands at:

$8,676,588,267,672.

Divided by the population of the United States, each American citizen now owes roughly:

$28,800.
