TWIN HOLE PUNCH CLOUD OVER NORTHLAND, NEW ZEALND ON 31/12/2005
I took this image at 1303 hrs New Years Eve above my house in Whangarei, New Zealand. This is one of several images of this "twin Hole Punch cloud". Another "single Hole Punch cloud" formed about a half hour after I took the above picture.

Hi Jeanie,
Thanks for that, but I actually beat you off the mark and read that article and viewed the images yesterday, very interesting.
I keep and open mind about these things and what may cause them.
However I have corresponded with a couple of met people who say this is a recent phenomena.
Quite strange that we have had a couple of twin punch-holes and a few singles here in good ol New Zealand within the last year.
I know the MetSociety ( NZ) presented my Mar 2005 photo at their conference and apparently it was greeted with "Oooohs" & "Aaarghs" of excitement.
If you haven't already visited, here is a comment about punch-holes by a local (NZ) met guy: (half way down page 1)

That hole belongs in a War of the Worlds movie..
On my first trip back to England in over a year, for just 10 days, I got to see a hole-punch - I'm pretty sure I never saw one in the whole 25 years I lived there previously.
That makes two I've seen now with my own eyes in a few months, so they can't be that rare. Shouldn't these things be in weather books if they've always been around? |

Indeed, I have photographed 4 now here in NZ within a year and there have been others photographed within that time frame also.
The point is, from what I can ascertain from meteorologists here, is that this is a relatively new phenomena of which the trigger is still a mystery. They understand the subsequent process of sublimation and virga etc, but the causes are still being debated.

I'm not actually sure how newthis phenomenon is... I'm thinking that I've seen similar images going back as far as 2002. There might even be one or two here in the image database.
As yes... Here's one...

I also saw a movie quite recently called "The Forgotten" that showed something similar to a punch cloud suddenly forming and then disappearing, hinting that it had something to do with extraterrestrials... Very strange. |

Thanks for the research Dan. So it looks like these may have started around the same time that CTs did, unless anyone is able to find an older image.
You would really think that if these were as common during the 80s and 90s as they are now that they'd be much more photographed and well known. |

Punch Clouds

We had a UFO sighting at O'Hare Airport not too long ago. Many witnesses reported it left a punch through the clouds when it split. Hope this helps:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/columnists/chi-0701010141jan01,0,5874175.column?coll=chi-news-col
"A flying saucerlike object hovered low over O'Hare International Airport for several minutes before bolting through thick clouds with such intense energy that it left an eerie hole in overcast skies, said some United Airlines employees who observed the phenomenon."
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16472286/site/newsweek/
"As many as a dozen United Airlines employees swear the mysterious object they saw on Nov. 7 was real—hovering for several minutes above the United Airlines terminal and then shooting up through the clouds so powerfully that it left an eerie hole in overcast skies. "At first we laughed to each other" when the report came over the radio, a witness told the National UFO Reporting Center, a Seattle-based nonprofit that maintains a UFO hotline and is listed as a resource in the FAA's official Aeronautical Information Manual. But then I saw the "dark gray, hazy, round object" and seconds later "there was an almost perfect circle in the cloud layer where the craft had been." His statement is published on the Web site of the National UFO Reporting Center, which says its policy is to protect the anonymity of its witnesses." _________________ “To the last, I grapple with thee; From Hell's heart, I stab at thee; For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee” |

The Rense site today has an article & photo of a hole punch: www.rense.com/general75/eevi.htm
I am struck by the similarity in "anatomy" of these phenomena, having the same characteristics, with the "fanlike" structure in the center. Created by a downdraft of a craft? |
