Memorial Day

To All-
This weekend is important. Not important because you can go to the lake or the beach, barbeque with friends, or watch the playoffs and the Indy 500 on television. It's not important so you can get your yard work done or visit your family. Sure, these are all things that people will be doing this weekend, but do we truly know what Memorial Day is for?
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Since then, Memorial Day has been the one official day per year that we are to remember those who have died fighting for our freedom. In the past few decades, however, the real meaning of Memorial Day had been emphasized less and less in favor of sales at the local shopping mall and drunken road trips to the lake to bake in the sun.
To help Americans re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps." So, please take the time on Monday to give thanks for the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedoms that we now enjoy and take for granted.
Now I know that a lot of you are not too happy with your government, the military, "the man," etc. I'm not asking you to thank today's men and women in uniform. Do that on Veteran's Day, if you do at all.
Monday is the time to remember the heroes of wars long ago and not-so long ago. It's time to remember the ones who went into battle, knees shaking and palms sweating, unknowing. Those who met their untimely end with the purest of intentions and strongest of hearts, with their family, friends, and countrymen on their minds. Thank them. Please.

I agree whole-heartedly, Topgun. Realistically though, you can't really thank someone who got blown away sixty years ago during one of TPTB's shoving matches.
I think the best way to honor the courage and sacrifice made by the honorable members of the military, the ones who died defending the so-called 'freedom' we now 'enjoy'is to follow their example and fight back, each in our own way this memorial day.
If you have a flag, I am going to suggest you fly it upside down this weekend. |

As a person who lives in a free country, I thank all you combat veterans, and those who are serving now. I want to do my part as an American to see that those who died for the values of freedom, did not die in vain….I want to ultimately and eventually give something back, but I cannot express my gratitude enough for those who paid the ultimate price. I will be flying the American flag high (and right side up) this memorial day, because I still believe in what the flag stands for, even though some see it as little more than a protest symbol.

Chinese is really a tough language. I don't want to have to start learning it, so keep up the good work! |

With great respect to those who survived the hell of war and came back ,I say thank you also....BUT...I have to also agree with chem11's last post here.Are we really proud to be American?I for one am not.We are the bullies of the world who will take what they want at any cost...And yes its not the American people who want this but rather TPTS
but I will not stand quietly thinking this in my heart with my hand over it as the anthym(sp?)is sung...I will fight back and I am not ashamed to say my Government is a disgrace and our intentions less than honorable! I will fight for the America I think of when I do stand with my hand over my heart.Happy Memorial day to all  ,and especially the VETS!!!When TPTS are no longer in control then I will truly be proud. |

Ok RTW...I just got through agreeing with you on one post, and must profoundly disagree with you here. I recommend all people who hate what America stands for, and who are ashamed to be American, simply pick a country of your choice and go there with the rest of the Hollywood actors. I recommend China....see the sights. Or Russia....you might be more suited to some cozy toilet paper lines there. There is a vast difference between disagreement with American politics and disagreement with the principals upon which this country is founded. To say that we are the bully of the world is accurate of Clinton’s use of the military, but not accurate at all when you consider actual historic fact. We are the savior of nations….or more specifically, American veterans are the saviors of nations and the protectors of freedom, many who have died for this principal. That’s why it is critically important to elect a person to the office of president who will correctly apply the military towards the purposes the constitution intended. The protection of United States interests, not policeman to the world and UN partner.
If you are ashamed of government, then I suggest you vote for people who represent the values of America next time, instead of Bill Clinton and Al Gore, who represented the values of the UN and their own selfish interests and quests for power. You express shame for your government yet at the same time express great joy that the Democrats might take majority in the Senate, the very people who have attempted to destroy every principal upon which this country is founded over the last eight years, and over the last 40 years if you want to be honest . You side with Chem11 who shows complete lack of respect for sacrafices of veterans and the principals of freedom upon which this country was founded.
RTW, you are a mass of conflicted interests in my view....not trying to insult....just figure you out.....Oh well, I guess I shouldn't be concerned with the opinions and thought processes of others...and let it bother me, but it does because I think you represent many others...If you want me to shut up on this, I will...but I said my piece. If you want to help me understand this mentality, I'll listen as well. It's completely foreign to me.

You don't need to know me Cy...Just realize we are ALL equal and ALL riding down the river on the same raft...It may be my hand that reaches out to pull you aboard or vice versa...That is what is important. I am nothing more than a spiritual being struggling to leave the clutches of shadowland and sometimes I fall out of step and return to the idiocy of it all, but each time I return I learn how to get back out more quickly.One day I shall succeed.  |

Flying the flag upside down is a an international sign of distress, not an insult to veterans or the principles this country was founded on.
I thought that was abundantly obvious.
