...canex maybe you could shed some light on how much progress has been made in the understanding of the initiation of ice into clouds....
Could this be at the heart of this issue ?

I would imagine a good question would be since the stratosphere is cooling, and cold air sinks, would there in the last couple o' years be more of a prepencity for contrail production in the sky ?
Leaving us with more contrails and the likelyhood of them ?
Most unusual even for weather :\ Rope stage wall cloud ?

Progress on ice initiation is very slow because it is so difficult to take the needed measurements. Ice forms in two ways in clouds:
1. Homogeneous freezing: a water droplet changes to ice without any outside agent (nucleation particle) at temperatures below -40C
2. Heterogeneous freezing: a water droplet changes from liquid to ice by the action of a an ice nucleus. These ice nuclei are generally thought to be crystalline aerosols that have a structure similar to water ice. Typically they are activated at temperatures below -15 C. Thus, if an ice nucleus bumps into a supercooled (colder than 0 C) water droplet, it may or may not cause ice formation depending on the activation temperature. The requirement for an ice nucleus at temperatures between 0 and -40C explains the frequent occurrence of supercooled clouds that present problems like icing on airplanes. The airplane surface acts like a giant ice nucleus and contacts zillions of supercooled droplets as it flies thru the cloud.
An increase in contrails due to cooling stratospheric temerpatures is unlikely because the temperatures in the stratosphere are already extremely cold. They are simply too dry for any significant contrail formation. Polar stratospheric clouds, I believe, are actually higher than most air traffic. |

Thanx for the reply, although I may not have explained my inference, I was mainly speculating that stratospheric cooling may be encroaching on the troposphere,with the last 10 years the warmest in history,the mental picture over time I was going for was like 100 degree day, a cold rain on hot pavement, causing steam....where under average parameters steam should not exist...
or maybe I need some sleep....
