Explain this...

Yesterday, I was watching TV and glanced outside the window into the sky to spot a sharp trail being laid down by a plane that was hauling ass.
My guess is that the plane couldn't have been miles high because it was streaking across the sky like a rocket. I thought contrails could form at only 33,000 feet or above? This plane was not that high.
As I watched the trail linger and give off sub-trails, a noticed another plane, this one looked black, tracing the path of the silver-looking plane that gave off the trail. It was a mere speck in the sky, but I could tell that number one, it was a different color than the first, and, number two, it gave off NO CONTRAIL whatsoever even though I'm sure it was flying at the same altitude as the first because it displaced some of the trail whenever it passed through it. I watched the second plane continue its tracing path until it disappeared.
Maybe three minutes later, another plane comes into view, following the same path as the two before it. This one appears silver and it billows the all-too-familiar trail behind it. All three traveled at what looked to me as the same altitude. Two of the planes left trails, one did not. How can this be explained?
The trails, by the way, dissipated faster than they usually do, but I noticed what was once a clear sky above turned quickly into a murky sea of gray.
I live in the DC area, and just to let those who wonder know, there are so many trails over this area on any given day that it is impossible to count them all.
Some of these trails I have observed literally saturate the sky with these wispy sub-trails that turn into cirrus clouds of...pray-tell...what?
What is going on? |

Pathfinder,
I've never seen a plane actually HAULING ASS.
Perhaps the second plane was hauling Preparation H? |

I've seen this here in Merryland Pathfinder.I think the one close by may be taking readings or doing radar together. No good no matter what they're doing. |

Pathfinder, Yes, I have seen this exact same scenario here in NW Louisiana and I even got some photos on my web-page of similar occurrance but right now my colleague is doing repairs and re-construction with his site but I'll get back to you when all is well and you can look around there and see what you think...I have even had "tag-along" plane incidents, where 2 large planes would be flying extremely low and at same altitude and so close together that it is supposed to be aero-dynamically impossible by flight standards as we know them...as Buzz said, maybe the second one was trying to insert itself into the first one like a suppository. All kidding aside, when you see this scenario, it is very unusual and disturbing. I have seen chemplanes fly in formation also, which is supposed to be illegal by FAA rules and they are not military looking planes....have also seen the black style ones, which exibit extremely anomalistic behaviors...flying too close side by side, passing directly in front of one another, or too close behind, and believe me, they are low enuf to distinctly see they are at same altitude, as you mentioned. I spend much time sky-watching so I don't miss very much...have health problems that slow me down, so, sometimes sky-watching is all I can do for a time. Blessings, Joanne ^j^ And Welcome! |

My daughters and I have recently moved to Camden County,NJ. Is it my imagination or has the spraying GREATLY increased??? My daughter said that the skies were filled with sprayers today. |

I too have witnessed this scenario in Knox County Indiana!
Buzz: I had never seen a plane "hauling ass" before either, but believe me you know it when you see it! |
