U.S. poll: 56 percent say Iraq war wrong
WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A full 70 percent of U.S. citizens think the war in Iraq has carried an unacceptable casualty cost, a Washington Post-ABC News poll published Tuesday said.
Further, 56 percent said given the cost, the conflict there was "not worth fighting," which is an 8-point increase from when the same question was asked last summer, and the first time a decisive majority of people have reached that conclusion.
On whether Iraq is prepared for elections Jan. 30, 58 percent of respondents believed the violence-plagued country is not ready. Nonetheless, 60 percent want elections to go forward as scheduled, even though 54 percent do not expect honest results with a "fair and accurate vote count."
Bush's core political asset -- public confidence in his leadership on terrorism -- remains intact, although down significantly from a year ago. Now, 53 percent approve of his record on terrorism, while 43 percent do not. Those numbers were 70 percent and 28 percent a year ago this week.
A total of 1,004 randomly selected U.S. citizens were interviewed Dec. 16 to 19. The margin of sampling error for the results is 3 percentage points.
