That is a rocket contrail, many miles in the sky. Why didn't anyone identify this one. The missile was launched from White Sands around 6am March 6, 1997. The photo appears to be from the Arizona Dept. of Transportation at www.azfms.com/Demo/97mar06/camera5.html another rocket contrail photo can be found at www.magicdave.com/astro/trail2.jpg and a rocket contrail analysis can be found at http://www.sd.znet.com/~schester/fallbrook/views/contrail_23_june1997.html and more photo links from there. Mr.Marrs should have known this since he lives so close to Vandenberg and the regularity of these events being so common in California. |

Goldrush,
Thanks for the info.
Yes, although the original picture isn't from the AZ DOT site, the image on their site does establish the location as the Phoenix area. If this is a missle from White Sands, NM it sure is a long way from home appearing over Phoenix. Why would anyone be shooting missles in this area? Do you have a reference for the 3/6/1997 missle launch? Interested in the 3rd link you posted, but it's not working. How does Mr. Marrs tie in with this? |

Hi Thermit, I mentioned Mr. Marrs because he hails from L.A. which is close to Vandenberg. Missile launches with this effect are commonly viewed in that area, and sometimes seen even from here in the Sierra Foothills. http://www.sd.znet.com/~schester/fallbrook/views/contrail_23_june_1997.html Try this. Launch schedules are posted through links from this site. I have not checked to see if White Sands has a similar site that would tie in with what is seen over Phoenix. I remember reading that missile testing was going on there earlier this year, in articles in Aviation Week & Space Technology. |

Some interesting bits from these links:
http://sd.znet.com/~schester/fallbrook/views/missile_contrails.html
quote: Finally, once in a great while ("a small number out of more than 1,700 missiles" according to Vandenberg Air Force Base), an extra added bonus of a "twilight phenomenon" occurs. This spectacular event features the colors of the rainbow (specifically, green, blue, white and rose-colors) emanating from the top of the contrail. It is created when unburned missile propellant and water freezes in the upper atmosphere, and those frozen crystals are illuminated at the right angle by the sun, which must be below the horizon by 30-60 minutes of time.
This is in reference to another missle contrail, but illustrates that, given sufficient height, missle trails can easily be seen from surrounding states...
http://sd.znet.com/~schester/fallbrook/views/contrail_23_june_1997.html
quote: The SDUT reported that the contrail was seen from Phoenix, 482 miles away from Vandenberg.

Another super site with links and launch schedules is www.hobbyspace.com/SpacePorts/ You might find the info about White Sands Missile Range there. The last rocket launch trail I saw was just last July, when the missile was sent to impact a target in space. The trail and luminescent glow from that one were a deep green and blue, which remained about 20-30 minutes after it entered space. Thank you for posting that site link for me. |

No problem, Goldrush. The information you have provided is very valuable in helping to discern the signature of a missle contrail and thus prevent these unusual trails from being considered Chemtrails. |

When people observe something from the ground, it further goes to prove how pre-judged perspective plays into what one beleives. Just because something is big, doesn't mean it is close to earth. The way altitude is judged by some chemtrail believers, and how they report their contrail observations from their own slanted story, will go on to maintain that contrails which are made by aircraft are somehow "chemtrails". Find something other than an engine that is making a persistent contrail, then I will find more credence to the tale. Thank you, Thermit for investigating my answer and posting your conclusion. |

Just discussing things with my genius husband,...he mentions that occasionally barium is dumped by a rocket intentionally to establish a visual means to check drift. Components of rocket fuel, mostly used by the Russians, for fuel are ..red fuming nitric acid aka nitrogen tetraoxide and "hydrazine" aka unsymmetrical di-methyl hydrazine, used because it is hypergolic, meaning it goes off on contact with the red fuming nitric acid, therefore an ignition system is not needed. By products of these chemicals do make the rocket contrail a true chemtrail if there ever was one. (His words) I can't disagree. Barium does glow green in the very high altitudes of the atmosphere. I have seen it. Now, show me how a contrail is different than a true chemtrail............. |

Hey California skywatchers! Mark your calendars for morning launches from Vandenberg, Minuteman III, prior to 7 am PST. From Brians Webpage...photographing instructions available. See some real chemtrails and colors. Sept. 14, and Sept. 28. To Christy, check the launch schedules from Canaveral, it is worth the eyefull. |

Goldrush,
Who is this Mr. Marrs person?
I was hoping you would explain this, when I asked how he tied in...
When you said "should have known this", what did you mean?
Where was he supposed to have observed the information? |

I apologize, I was going from memory. The name I meant was Moors. He has contributed pics to the site and has been media active regarding the issue. Based in L.A. |
