Calcium Chloride and Sodium Bicarbonate bad for you? PostMon Jan 09, 2006 2:14 am  Reply with quote

Is Calcium Chloride and Sodium Bicarbonate in bottled water bad for you? I buy Safeway Select "Refreshe" bottled water and I noticed it in the nutrition facts. I can't seem to find anything about it on the net...... Question

There's really not too much data on Calcium Chloride and Sodium Bicarbonate in water. The sodium bicarbonate (HCO3-) increases blood ph during heat stress periods and the CaCl2 or Calcium Chloride decreases the blood ph. Confused Doesn't seem to make any sense that they would add both or even the Calcium chloride which, in certain concentrations. produced abnormal acid-base equilibrium conditions during the heat stress-induced respiratory alkalosis during one study.

Digging deeper, I found this study which said that "Sodium bicarbonate-rich mineral water in conjunction with a low-salt diet may have a beneficial effect on calcium homeostasis".

Effect of sodium chloride- and sodium bicarbonate-rich mineral water on blood pressure and metabolic parameters in elderly normotensive individuals: a randomized double-blind crossover trial.

Calcium Chloride is the kind of stuff that they melt ice with because it reacts exothermically with water (produces heat) and in certain concentrations can corrode steel... It is found in some types of mineral water as is sodium bicarbonate... and is also found in pickles and other foods to give them a salty taste without increasing the food's sodium content so apparently it's not harmful in low concentrations... Calcium Chloride is also used for:

fruit and vegetable canning, brewing, bottling, high fructose corn syrup production, dairy foods processing, and other approved food processing applications.

a variety of food processing applications — tenderizing, post harvest and after-cooking processes, as well as for stabilizing and preserving beverages.

fluoride removal and for the control of water hardness

So basically it's in a lot of things. Razz

Not sure why they put it in bottled water, but sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) works well for brushing teeth and adding to homemade cleaning products as a mild abrasive.
