I look at it this way, the manipulation is so strong and complete that if an astronaut said something that would go against his education and training, not to mention peer criticism and pressure, then it would be too much to take.
In the end it all comes down to "balls", people in the establishment are known not to have them.
They usually weed out the brave souls early on in the training and infinite psychological testing they make these poor souls go through.
