I recently have had the opportunity to question an ATC supervisor at his home, on two occasions.
Every persistent contrail that we both observed, turned out to be from a "military exercise". They are notified of operations, and they route commercial airlines accordingly. The ATC's are not told any specifics as to what the "exercises" consist of.
He told me that they frequently see them flying back and forth, over and over, and then the same thing perpendicular to the original pattern. He was surprised when I showed him a picture of a grid.
An observation I have made is that when the spraying starts out in the mornings, it is always near the sun. As the sky changes into the white mess, then it's like a free for all, going every which-way, until late afternoon when, again, they seem to concentrate around the sun again. |

I see the same here in my area and anywhere else I travel to in the UK, it starts with the sun or around the horizon unless they want total sky cover that is then as the sun sets it goes to that side spraying prior to the sun setting, but like on other forums where socrates commented on about this debunkers came along and said what I would have also - the sun is shining all over at any time it is out. This is why I don't understand it fully. I do see spraying after clear blue sky days towards the evening time and early hours of the morning ready for the next day, it may be to only prevent natural cloud cover it it can also be to get geared up for a heavy spray day. I agree it is more likely it NOT any commercial jets doing this but possible if additives were used, I am almost 100% certain it is always military because of the style they fly in up and down and vertically, even in formations and airshow style of flying in some cases.
And on clear blue sky days I notice there is a small amount of aerosol cover around the horizon. The last few days here has been warmer now we have spring and soon hopefully summer, they have been spraying aerosols causing milky skies (thinner layers than heavy spray days) here but allowing the aerosol cover to disperse and then once again replenish it while allowing a certain amount of sunlight in but blocking some - probably making it 2c cooler than it would be if it was fully clear sky or natural clouds.
