Can surveillance aircraft "turn off" contrails? PostWed Jul 04, 2007 11:03 pm  Reply with quote

I was just reading this from a SR-71 ground crew's webpage. I was doing some research concerning surveillanc aircraft and their ability to thwart detection. It would seem to me that having a contrail would not be in the best interest of those employed in aerial reconnaissance, aerial signals collection, imagery intelligence, etc. Have the designers of such aircraft been able to find a way to "turn off" the contrails. A high altitude aircraft giving off a contrail in restricted airspace would make a tasty target for surface to air missiles. I then found this excerpt from a webpage devoted to veterans of the SR-71 flight crews and pilots.

The retirement ceremony was also a very sad day. Many media and local personalities were on hand, and the base was opened up for all to see. We started it out in dramatic fashion, as we opened all the SR-71 shelters simultaneously for all to view. All twelve shelters had an SR-71 in them. Aircraft 971 was flown that day, piloted by the 1st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron (1SRS) Commander Lieutenant Colonel (LtCol) Rod Dykman. He took her to speed and did a high pass over the base while dumping fuel. This was the best way to depict the speed on the SR-71, as all could look above at an aircraft at 80,000 feet, and see the swift contrail produced by the fuel hitting the cold air. In just a few seconds, it was out of sight. Shortly thereafter, he performed a few fly-bys, landed, and taxied her to the place of honor in front of the stage setup for the ceremony.

It would seem that from this article that to produce a contrail the SR-71 had to actually dump fuel. So it would seem that producing a contrail is not a part of the SR-71s normal performance.

Contrails PostFri Jul 06, 2007 4:44 pm  Reply with quote

This is a rare effect that only happens at a certin altitude and temperature. It's impossible to view a contrail now days anyway, you can't see passed the chemtrails and chem-clouds to view one. Dumped fuel on the other hand is a nasty chemical smog and they should be dragged to the courtroom for dumping toxic waste. Look up info on the additives on these new jet fuels and you'll be pissed.
