Lady birds/bugs PostMon Oct 22, 2007 11:36 am  Reply with quote

some one once posted that they couldn't see ladybirds anymore, that they weren't around...
I'm just surprised at the amount i see, in october! found 3 at my place today, and one more at the balcony. Ain't it strange? Lady birds in winter?

This is the REAL ladybird or ladybug as some call it. They are RED with black spots. These are no longer around, or at least I haven't seen a red one in years. Used to be when I was young you would find them in spring through summer and they were considered good luck.

Today, we only have these kinds of lady bugs/beetles whatever. They are orange with spots and were purposefully let out in the late 70's. I believe these are a genetically altered variety, from a lab. They bite and have become a nuisance.

Cool post, Pak.

I have been waiting to see some of these this year. To date, I've seen (4) of the orange variety. Usually about this time of year, I see hundreds of them trying to get inside to seek warmth.

I haven't seen a red one since I was a kid.

It is reported that the beetle has heavily fed on soybean aphids (which recently appeared in the U.S. after coming from China), supposedly saving farmers vast sums of money in 2001.

I read a post on rense not too long ago about the dangers of them feeding on GM crops. Maybe this is a case of man-made selection. Thanks for the post Smile
