How hired-gun lobbyists pulled the teeth out of new EU lobbyists' register
It has now become clear that the long-awaited lobbyists register which
the European Commission plans launch on June 23rd will be extremely
unambitious. Registration will be on a voluntary basis and the
Commission will not ask organisations or firms to disclose the names of
individual lobbyists. What is more, the financial transparency
requirements for consultancy firms, who lobby on behalf of big business
clients, have been seriously diluted. This watering down is a direct
result of lobbying by EPACA, which represents the largest 'hired-gun'
lobbyists' firms in Brussels.

[CEO] Cyber-action: help secure real transparency in EU decision-making!
Help secure real transparency in EU decision-making!
Did you know that an estimated 15-20,000 lobbyists, mainly
representing corporate interests, roam Brussels? corridors of power
totally unregulated? But the lobbying business operates in the dark,
with the exact number of lobbyists, their names, interests and levels
of funding all kept secret.
Following years of pressure, the European Commission has finally put
forward proposals for a system of regulation and plans to launch a new
register on 23 June. But they want a voluntary system that will do
little to remove the current secrecy around EU lobbying.
Lobby companies won't have to list the names of individual lobbyists,
or provide any meaningful financial data about their lobbing
activities, so lobbyists who want to keep their business secret can
continue to do so.
ALTER-EU is calling on the President of the European Commission, Jose
Manuel Barroso to toughen up the lobbyists register. Please give us
your support by letting him know you support our calls for greater
transparency.
