top 10 reasons why google is evil PostSun Sep 07, 2008 4:16 am  Reply with quote

I wrote this last night, spread it around. i've had enough of Google.

Top Ten reasons why Google is evil

Google came out with an informal motto to ‘do no evil’. Reaping untold millions in free publicity as news spread around the world of the new kid in town. Google was the new messiah who could rid us of the corporations that virtually had a stranglehold on search engine technology. People love rooting for the little guy; the story of two nerds in a garage going up against giant corporations and winning through sheer ingenuity pulled at our collective gullibility.

But what if the truth is a little different? Say perhaps these companies that are so good at PR know that spewing stories that tug at our hearts is the only way they can really beat the competition. Plenty of other search engines can do what Google does, perhaps not as well as they can due to the sheer amount of money they can throw at a problem, but almost as well. Success on the net essentially relies on trust and Google played that game well. But it is no longer the little nerdy kid that it once was; in fact it is the biggest, strongest and meanest kid on the block (Google is bigger than Disney and McDonalds combined). Google took steroids and pumped iron and instead of standing up for the little guy, it realised it’s much more profitable to take your lunch money.

Some have suggested that Google is getting evil. But it already is and here is why;

1. Manipulating video ratings on Google video and Youtube.

Google manipulates the ranking of controversial videos it doesn’t like. Case in point; a new video title Fabled Enemies went from the nr.2 spot to nr.1 on September 2nd. It then mysteriously disappeared from the top 100. Google has previously done the same with Loose Change.

2. Use and misuse of all data input through Google Chrome

The new Google Chrome web browser came with a EULA (end-user license agreement) which required the user to; “give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and nonexclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services."

They changed the EULA after a lot of complaints. But this still leaves a bad taste. Judging from the wording, it would appear that Google stores everything you submit through the internet.

3. The collection and retention of all your search data.

Google has stated that it has never knowingly erased a single search query since its inception.

4. The Google cookie places a unique ID on your machine.

The cookie has an expiration date set for 2038. To put that in perspective, the CIA was forced to stop using a cookie that expired in ten years. Privacy International has ranked Google as the worst internet company for privacy.

5. Google doesn’t like free speech

Google fired an employee who stated that the perks the company offers such as free meals, on-site gym etc was so the employees would work longer hours.

6. Google censors search results in China to appease the communist regime.

7. Google promotes monopolies;

A Lauren Turner from the Google Advertising team stated that healthcare companies should buy ads on Google with the keywords ‘Michael Moore’ and ‘Sicko’ to promote the industry to those searching for information on the film.

8. Google is cooperating with intelligence agencies

Google has been recruited by the major spy agencies to help them better process and share information on suspects according to a Timesonline article.

9. Google self promotes its own products to the detriment of competitors such as Wordpress and LiveJournal

Even though Google themselves made a fuss about Microsoft’s IE7 and Vista, claiming that the software might be recommending the Live.com search engine over Google, Google itself is self promoting its products. Just type ‘blog’ in Google to see which of the blogging services comes first, if any.

10. Google toolbar is spyware

The Google toolbar sends details of the sites you visit back to Google and updates itself without permission.

What internet users have to realise is that they hold all the power. These companies live and die by the amount of users willing to make use of their services. Maybe it’s time to root for another little guy?

Here are some alternatives to Google;

Cuil.com, dogpile.com, teoma or ask.com, the Copernic desktop search agent and many more.

Damn that ones gone too USA used to have a good search engine, it's gone government too. I like dogpile come on people there has to be one great choice. I'm drawing a blank. The government is out to collect anything they can to use against people. Screw them, stand up in court and explain to the jury as a free person you have a right to say what you think.

Maybe lycos

Google sucks.... PostTue May 26, 2009 9:41 pm  Reply with quote

Amen brother in your critics of Google, little have to be added just one point.

Google is the first search engine unfamously trying to prey and profit the copyrights of thousands of authors mostly writters, they are putting to storage a huge data base of tecnological and cultural information of virtually everything out there, and guess what charge you for it , regarless is it public domain or not.

Basically Google is saying this info is mine now (mostly books) regarless of copyrights laws and I will profit and charge for it. Why? Well, 'cause I can.
