Losing Count PostWed Sep 18, 2002 9:15 am  Reply with quote

Hey..Thermit, Lulu, Dan, FL, how come the topics keep losing their viewing counts? It's been happening ever since the 'Change' and no one is restoring them? How come? Is it technically impossible?

UT,

Comments in this thread explain some of the why. I'm going to try to fix this problem soon as I have some spare hours...

Thanks for the link to that thread Thermit...had no idea this was being discussed anywhere else. I do like the blow torch idea...I have also noticed when I've posted a new topic that upon submission, 80 -200 views can appear instantly as well. There's definitely a loose wire somewhere.

UT,

Yeah, that particular 'loose wire' is related to threads being moved. For example someone creates a thread in CTs that should be in Freeform, but before the thread is moved by a moderator it receives 50 hits. However, these 50 counts aren't also moved, because the view counts isn't that sophisticated. It was a free add-on, not part of the original software. Those hits are matched to the corresponding thread by forum and thread number, so when the next thread is posted in CTs, it inherits the counts from the previous thread that occupied the same numerical slots. Maybe I can fix this too...

While you're tackling and tinkering Thermit...don't forget the protective eyewear and your fire extinguisher! I can just see it now, a repeat of 'Doc' from Back To The Future! Personally I prefer baseball bats.

Actually I was hoping the problem might go away on the new servers, but alas they are here as well. The more people are visiting the forums at once the more likely the problem is to rear, and the counts have been up lately, making it worse. Maybe I should take a look at it now...

The counts have been changing for a while now, but I really didn't think too much about it. I know when I do any substantial work to my aol home page site the counters will sometimes reset themselves. Then aol did some kind of modification on them and now I've got 90 hits instead of the over 300 hits I had before they messed with them.

Good to see you FLKook.

BTW, I think I found the problem.

Alpha, you really got to be careful when you modify a smilie's programming. There's no telling what they're capable of doing if they get loose on the board.

Go right ahead Alpha.

BTW, I think I found out why the wire's loose.

This smilie is jumping on it. But luckily they're pretty easy to catch.
So it's not a major problem.
