C’mon — Those things were so low they almost clipped the telephone wires...... An awful lot of air traffic for northern Wisconsin......

You've got to be kidding that you think those contrails were anywhere near that telephone wire!!! I've got a great picture at home that shows a friend of mine in the back of a pick-up holding his hand up with the moon in his hand. Does that mean the moon suddenly got closer to the Earth? I suggest reading a book about perspective and optical illusions.

I must concur with Bee, these trail are quite high, probably over 30,000 ft.

As an interesting note, these barrel-roll trails have also been reported in Lakeside, MT.

Can any aircraft experts testify as to what planes would be able to perform this weaving maneuver? It seems this beyond the abilities of a tanker plane, true?

I have seen these type of chemtrails here in the Okanagan Valley and assumed that the way these DNA-type (spiralling) chemtrails looked was due to their composition, not how the plane moved. But, who knows???

Rotor. Horizontal rolling tube of turbulent air. You can definitely get a corkscrew contrail without doing a barrel roll. The 2 contrails twisting together is a good indication of a rotor effect.

Bored fighter pilots?

I have also heard that propwash can cause this effect.

Helicity- A property of a moving fluid which represents the potential for helical flow (i.e. flow which follows the pattern of a corkscrew) to evolve. Helicity is proportional to the strength of the flow, the amount of vertical wind shear, and the amount of turning in the flow (i.e. vorticity).

"And so it was we were all in the air by 8:00 am, bound for our first stop at Narsarsuaq, Greenland, 679 nautical miles from The Goose. "Andre, your airplane is giving off a contrail!" was heard over the air-to-air frequency. Yes it is true, a Malibu gives off a beautiful contrail which emanates from both exhausts and is twisted into a perfect corkscrew from the propeller wake. Since we were able to see each other in flight during much of the first leg, a Malibu contrail was quite a spectacular and unexpected treat.
Throughout most of the flight, the commercial airlines took particular interest in our group of five. Most would ask if we were ferry pilots for Piper and they thought it was incredible that we would venture such an expedition in single engine aircraft. One Delta captain wanted to meet us for a drink in a London pub and another Boeing 767 pilot responded "Cool Man!" when he heard what we were flying."

Helicity and Rotor Effect are large scale rotational effects, they don't apply to this localized twisting, with 2 twisted together and 1 twisted on itself.

Propwash isn't a factor either since these are jets.

There they go...

How did 3 become four, and why couldn't they be C-130's? This effect can be caused by those upturned winglets on the ends of the wings of newer airplanes as well. Can't think of their name offhand. For All I know it could even have been an airshow miles away from the photog. Or it could be military fighter jets practicing jinking maneuvers to avoid SAMS. Since the planes are not in the photos, I would be loathe to connect the 4 distant planes with the 3 twisty contrails. Notice the vastly different background colors. Not that I'm suspicious, mind you. But I am.

I personally experienced small scale rotor effects in Denver, Colorado. There is a great picture around somwhere of a small rotor cloud on the leading edge of a stormfront.

At any rate, you'd then have to explain the need for such barrel roll chemtrailing. I'm not even gonna' touch that!
