Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius

There are small glimmers of hope, at least as far as educating children. All my nieces, nephews, and children of friends favorite new show is Jimmy Neutron:Boy Genius.
I watched it finally on Fridays, and I'm hooked. It is definitely science oriented. In one episode, called Normal Boy, Jimmy is disliked by his peers because he is smart and knowledgeable in science. He is disappointed that they don't like him. So he invents a DUMB-DOWN machine. He accidentally hits the "drooling-idiot" switch. He is now very popular with his peers. All of a sudden, an asteroid is heading to earth and no one can figure out what to do. So they bring Jimmy back to the machine and restore his genius brain. Of course, he uses a MASS DRIVER to ward off the meteor.
IN the other episode Jimmy becomes a hall monitor in school. No one takes him seriously, so he invents all kinds of surveillance and policing devices. In one scene, he puts a full body scan over someone and on a screen comes up all pertinent info on a student. He even uses terms from "1984" like "citizen, let me see your papers", and "Up against the wall". Of course, no one likes him now.
My point is, all these kids around me, ages 3-12, absolutely go bananas over this show. The parents of them all love it too. It's a refreshing sight to see at least one TV show that is hilarious and teaches about science and technology being used for good or destruction. A welcome change in a time of The Sopranos, Sponge Bob, and gore passing as Science Fiction. |
