WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. forces near Baghdad found a weapons cache of around 20 medium-range missiles equipped with potent chemical weapons, the U.S. news station National Public Radio reported on Monday.
NPR, which attributed the report to a top official with the 1st Marine Division, said the rockets, BM-21 missiles, were equipped with sarin and mustard gas and were "ready to fire." It quoted the source as saying new U.S. intelligence data showed the chemicals were "not just trace elements."
It said the cache was discovered by Marines with the 101st Airborne Division, which was following up behind the Army after it seized Baghdad's international airport.
U.S. Central Command headquarters in Qatar had no immediate comment.
The United States and Britain launched the war against Iraq to rid the country of weapons of mass destruction. Iraq denies having such weapons.

Nerve agents detected in Iraq
Compound evacuated; troops show symptoms
Knight Ridder News Service
Last Updated: April 6, 2003
Albu Muhawish, Iraq - U.S. soldiers evacuated an Iraqi military compound on Sunday after tests by a mobile laboratory confirmed evidence of sarin nerve gas. More than a dozen soldiers of the Army's 101st Airborne Division had been sent earlier for chemical weapon decontamination after they exhibited symptoms of exposure to nerve agents.
The evacuation of dozens of soldiers Sunday night followed a day of tests for the nerve agent that came back positive, then negative. Additional tests Sunday night by an Army Fox mobile nuclear, biological and chemical detection laboratory confirmed the existence of sarin.
Sgt. Todd Ruggles, a biochemical expert attached to the 2nd Brigade of the 101st Airborne said, "I was right" that chemical agents Iraq has denied having were present.
In addition to the soldiers sent for decontamination, a Knight Ridder reporter, a CNN cameraman and two Iraqi prisoners of war also were hosed down with water and bleach.
U.S. soldiers found the suspect chemicals at two sites: an agricultural warehouse containing 55-gallon chemical drums and a military compound, which soldiers had begun searching Saturday. The soldiers also found hundreds of gas masks and chemical suits at the military complex, along with large numbers of mortar and artillery rounds.
Chemical tests for nerve agents in the warehouse came back positive for so-called G-Series nerve agents, which include sarin and Tabun, both of which Iraq has been known to possess. More than a dozen infantry soldiers who guarded the military compound Saturday night came down with symptoms consistent with exposure to very low levels of nerve agent, including vomiting, dizziness and skin blotches.
A hand-held scanning device also indicated that the soldiers had been exposed to a nerve agent. Two tests were negative, but further testing indicated sarin was present.
Sarin can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin and is considered one of the most feared but also the most volatile of the nerve agents. A cloud of sarin can dissipate after several minutes or hours depending on wind and temperature.
The soldiers, journalists and prisoners of war who tested positive were isolated as everyone else evacuated the area. After about 45 minutes, the group was walked, single-file, down a road for about a city block to where two water trucks awaited them. The men stepped between the two trucks and were hosed down as they lathered themselves with a detergent containing bleach.
1st Lt. Elena Aravjo of the 63rd Chemical Company said she thought there might well be chemical weapons at the site. "We do think there's stuff in this compound and the other (agricultural warehouse) compound, but we think it's buried," she said. "I'm really suspicious of both of those compounds."
The suspicions were widespread. The 2nd Brigade's commander, Col. Joseph Anderson, toured the site on Sunday, as did Brig. Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley, assistant commander of the 101st Airborne for operations. A short time later, the division commander, Maj. Gen. David H. Petraeus, also visited the site. They made no official comment about suspected nerve agents.
Troops not wearing chemical protection suits later reoccupied the military complex, while sections of the agricultural warehouse remained taped off.

BEHIND THE BUSHES
PATRIOTIC BLUES
By: Novakeo
http://etherzone.com/2003/nova040703.shtml
How many times does one have to explain to a neoconservative or their fogged up supporters that the government in Washington is not what America is all about? When will these perverted minds be able to comprehend that the shining light on the hill, America, was never intended to be defined by what the vast bureaucracies in DC and the elites that run them, say and do, the federal government has become an anathema to every principle that this nation was founded upon. When will they understand that a war to destroy evil is an impossibility, and if you engage in the same evil to fight a perceived evil, you only achieve the augmentation of evil itself. Evil feeds on evil, that’s how it grows and spreads its venomous excrement throughout humanity. Breaking constitutional and international laws to aggressively invade another country is an evil act.
There is no moral justification that can justify a war that has nothing to do with this nations security, Iraq has never presented itself as a plausible threat to the United States, as we now see, Iraq can barely defend herself from an invasion, so how could she then have been regarded as a military threat to the United States? The answer is that it was always a bunch of fabrications by the Bush clan and nothing more. Freeing a people from tyranny is also an illegitimate justification; no American should be sacrificed for a nation on the other side of the planet on the simplistic grounds of utopian humanitarianism, it’s not our business or responsibility. Destroying an evil dictator so he cannot in the future start a war of mass destruction is also an illegitimate position because it is based entirely on conjecture and suppositions and no foreign policy should be determined on rough guesses.
The act of using the flag as a blind folder to the truth is an immoral act in itself, and this is where many Americans find themselves when trying to justify and defend the morally unattainable. They instinctively resort to false accusations against some of those that oppose conquering the Middle East for the interests of the few at the expense of the many, of being un-American or just flat out un-patriotic, and spew out old jingoisms and clichés such as love it or leave it, it’s a war for freedom, a war against evil, a war against terrorism, a war for a secure future, and so on. All proven to be baseless and contrived many times over. Granted, there are many on the left that hate America and use any opportunity to trash her, this war being no exception.
The State and its minions does not have the authority to dictate what is patriotic behavior, the State definitely has no moral standing to speak of, and the immoral case that demands that Americans, right or wrong, must support the State in time of war is nothing more than mindless rhetoric worthy of scorn and derision, the Bush clan does not represent all of America, they never have and they never will. Deep down in the American conscious is a desire to be free from government tyranny, be it domestic or foreign, and it is very un-American to have Washington DC pursue imperialistic policies abroad and subjugate other peoples by force. Eventually Americans will realize that this is the case, and will try to put an end to this elitist subversion; it might be too late by then.
I am reminded of Edward Abbey’s statement – “A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government”, holds true today more than ever. There is a very pernicious criminal element within the Bush administration with the head honcho being its despicable leader, and wrapping oneself with the red white and blue will not hide you from the truth for long, you see, the truth in the end always finds a way to the surface so it can be revealed for all to see. And one thing boy George and his war buddies hate is anyone making the attempt to reveal the truth in what they are doing in the Middle East.
In recent interviews President Bush when faced with legitimate, daunting and penetrating questions, very few get through the screeners; after the initial confusion reveals a contemptuous face, lined with complete arrogance towards the audacity of such inquiries, any redolent criticisms is not to be tolerated and is extremely un-patriotic. Why? Because such questions could reveal the truth, and all the answers to the reasons for the illegal acts perpetrated by the Bush clan would be seen to be based on lies and half truths, and such a general revelation to the American public would bring the Bush clan swiftly to impeachment and criminal trials if the rule of law was still applicable to the ruling class in America. They lie to justify their morally bankrupt positions and criminality, then they lie some more to achieve a perception of vindication and righteousness, and finally sugar coat it with some more lies for the record.
Where has all this brought us as a society, its brought us to a demonic reality that permeates almost all facets of public life, a mass delusion of Babylon, no wonder the neocons are so intent on going to their spiritual home in the middle of Mesopotamia. The Bush clique demands that others go to kill others to justify their demonic existence. Their judgment will come sooner or later, here on earth or in the next continuance, either way; their ship will set sail on the gleaming lake of fire - that is their true destiny.

quote: “A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government”,
Worth repeating.
I support our troops while they are in harms way and are not responsible for policy. I support our country and the principles it stands for. Don't confuse that with blind support, of our federal government in general (out side of the literal translation of our constitution) and the out of control executive branch specifically. Just remember here at home we have the draconian "fatherland"...errrr uhhh.. I mean "homeland" to deal with. Stand up against the unpatriot "Patriot Acts"! Our most basic freedoms are being flushed down the perverbial toilet never to be seen again and the general population has no idea.
BTW, If you haven't read James Bramford's Body of Secrets you need to...amazing. |

That's a quote from my man Ed Abbey Kook.
The author of "The monkey wrench gang."
Here's some more things worth repeating.
“--Where has all this brought us as a society, its brought us to a demonic reality that permeates almost all facets of public life, a mass delusion of Babylon, no wonder the neocons are so intent on going to their spiritual home in the middle of Mesopotamia. The Bush clique demands that others go to kill others to justify their demonic existence. THE OVERTHROW OF THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC, Part 32

U.S./IRAQ Plots and Secret Weapons
Both the U.S. and Iraq have the same secret weapon and they share in joint plots. Without publicity, the U.S. used the weapon in Persian Gulf War One. Iraq, recipient of the same technology from Daddy Bush and others when Saddam Hussein was his private business partner in the 1980s, may use it in Persian Gulf War Two.
A huge body of details, known to us, is necessary to try to understand this report by those who may not be well-informed and/or, in years past have not been much interested in knowing about these matters that we put into our reports.
A summary of some of those details:
[1] Both Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein were created by the American CIA, with the aid and connivance, among others, of Daddy Bush, and despite appearing to be on the outs with their creators, continue to play sophisticated "games" with the CIA and others, seldom understood by or explained to common Americans. The oil-soaked, spy-riddled monopoly press tells us all less than ten per cent of the truth, ninety per cent fairy tales, to protect The Establishment, the "powers-that-be", the Ruling Class, or whatever you call "THEM".
[2] Our reports right after the multiple bombings of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Office Building, in Oklahoma City, April 19, 1995, were often misunderstood and widely heckled by poorly informed persons. Despite that, we continue to try not to deal with readers of our reports, listeners of our radio shows, and viewers of our non-commercial tv shows, as if such persons are all eight year olds, the rotten way the press-fakers keep the public as dumb as possible.
(a) right after April 19, 1995, we wrote exclusive reports which appeared on one or more websites, years before we had our own website. (We believe they may still be archived by Brian Redman, who has been running a superior website, "Conspiracy Nation", although we are NOT conspiracy theorists.)
(b) We said that multiple weapons were used to take down the building in Oklahoma City. We later interviewed some of those who came from some distance as volunteer rescuers with their sniffing dogs, searching for possible survivors. We found later that some of them were suffering from radioactive fall-out ailments. AND, that their skilled dogs thereafter died. For various reasons becoming suspicious, the volunteers dug up the carcasses of the dead animals and a laboratory determined they had huge amounts of radioactive material in their lungs. The volunteers themselves were suffering from diseases associated with having been heavily exposed to radioactive materials. Government doctors told the volunteers if they did not SHUT UP about the subject, that their ailments would not be dealt with, that they would receive no medical attention, and doctor/hospital bills would NOT be paid.
Who among the press prostitutes mentioned the independent-minded investigators who came to the bomb site with Geiger Counters, to measure radioactive fall-out and were astounded what they found? Nuclear experts who permitted us to talk to them on the promise of extreme secrecy, informed us that the residue substance discovered in the bomb site was TRITIUM. It is described as "A rare radioactive hydrogen isotope with atomic mass 3 and half-life 12.5 years, prepared artificially for use as a tracer and as a constituent of hydrogen bombs". Excerpt of our interviews:
Citizen's Committee to Clean Up the Courts: "Why are you whispering to me?"
Nuclear expert: "You are a layman. You do not know what you are messing with in discussing tritium, sir."
Weapons experts prefer tritium because it has a half-life, when it is still potent, much, much less than better known plutonium.
The press whores, in a position to know about these things or even to ask questions, were silent and censored all mentioned of anything linked to this. If anything, they steered up know-nothings to privately blast us as "liars". The press raised no questions when the FBI, to cover up the radioactivity, quickly demolished what was left of the Murrah Building and cemented over the site, calculated to keep the radioactive residue from being further measured and detected.
[3] As we detailed in various of our stories posted on websites of pals of ours, we mentioned that starting before April 19, 1995, were efforts by dissident "flag officers", slang for Admirals and Generals, to seek to arrest their Command-in-Chief Bill Clinton, a real-life "Seven Days in May". They felt authorized under the Uniform Military Code to arrest Clinton. If he arrested them for mutiny, if they were not immediately assassinated, they were prepared to heavily document to defend themselves at Courts Martial with data proving Clinton met from time to time with the head of the Red Chinese Secret Police, Wang Jun, and turned over to him, U.S. financial, industrial, and yes, MILITARY secrets. The Red Chinese being sworn enemies of the U.S., these acts by Clinton fit the classic U.S. Constitution definition of treason (Article 3, Section 3).
[4] Right after April 19, 1995, Clinton went as a surprise on CBS's "60 Minutes" Sunday tv program, and proclaimed that the "militia" (then much in the news) were dedicated, he said, "to try to overthrow the U.S. Government", a false notion Clinton well knew. Clinton and his cronies, the Bush Crime Family, clearly had prior knowledge of the Oklahoma City Bombings. Clinton's purpose was to divert attention from the political debacle of the 1994 Congressional Election, wherein the GOP took control, after many years, of the U.S. Congress.
[5] In 1992, members of our investigative group spent about four months extensively interviewing Michael Riconoscuito. Described by those who knew him well as a weapons and electronic genius, which we verified he is/was, he ran afoul of the American CIA because he divulged to a Congressional Committee the dirty business of Daddy Business and others in the "spook" industry. [The federal jails, in various places in this nation, have put away by frame-ups, several former CIA pilots who blew the whistle on dope shipments, CIA covert operators and such, all on the outs with the spy cartel, and put in jail on long sentences. Riconosciuto was framed up on a 28 year rap.]
As we confirmed, Riconosciuto helped invent and develop a sub-atomic weapon he and others called "blue lightning". We talked to him in the Federal "Triangle", one of the few buildings in the U.S. shaped with three sides and being the Federal jail in the Windy City. He was brought to Chicago from another jail, while he waited to be brought before a very, very Special Federal Grand Jury supposedly investigating corruption of the U.S. Justice Department and the American CIA.
In charge of the Grand Jury was retired former Chicago U.S. District Judge Nicholas J. Bua. Was it a mere coincidence he was a key member of the secret group P-2 (Propagana Due), dedicated to overthrowing representative governments in Italy, France, England, and U.S? P-2 is made up of top level judges, cabinet members, legislators, media brass, and bosses of the secret political police. (A history of P-2, from various publications available through web search engines, shows they specialize, for example, in bombings to blame onto innocent dissidents.)
Get this! Former Judge Bua in 1992 was the Special Counsel for the U.S. Justice Department. Neat trick! Investigating themselves, a perfect whitewash.
Little known or understood is that every person has a fundamental right to find the foreperson of the Grand Jury and submit to that person evidence and testimony that the Grand Jury may wish to investigate. Of course, no outsider has a right to ask a Grand Juror what they are deliberating on behind the unmarked door. I located the foreperson of Bua's Grand Jury, as she was walking on the way to the secret door. I told her I and associates of mine had testimony and evidence for the Grand Jury. Bua's assistant, not wishing to know the law that applied authorizing what I was doing, tried to right there arrest me. When I told Bua, who knew me for several decades, that I will sue him and his assistant for false arrest, Bua called off his vicious dog.
[6] A secret copy of Bua's whitewash report was somehow delivered to us. We found out that Bua had without evidence he could refer to, condemned Riconosciuto and any mention of the "blue lightning" weapon. Shortlly thereafter I and an associate of mine and Riconosciuto brought a suit in the Chicago Federal District Court against Bua and others. We claimed they were unlawfully blocking our evidence and testimony before the Federal Grand Jury, an offense known as obstruction of justice. A fellow Judge of Bua, without allowing us to appear even once in his courtroom, secretly dismissed our case, stating no reason for doing so.
[7] During Persian Gulf War One, 1991, without publicity, or if ever mentioned at all, soft-pedaled, the U.S. Military used Riconosciuto's invention "blue lightning" to blast away and incinerate great numbers of Iraqi troops. Riconosciuto and others familiar with the weapon, contend it releases a form of sub-atomic power. A residue left over in or near where it is used is TRITIUM, same residue left over after the multiple blasts at the Oklahoma City bombings, April 19, 1995.
[8] For many years after the Oklahoma City disaster, I was the only one writing exclusively about how domestic dissidents whether they were fully aware of it or not, were actually surrogates for Iraq playing a dirty game in the U.S. for the American CIA and others. At the close of Persian Gulf War One, as I exclusively described, Daddy Bush, then President, quietly brought into the U.S., four thousand supposed elite Iraqi military and intelligence division defectors, some of them skilled pilots. Bush and later Clinton, were in a position to know that some of them were actually double agents.
In a heavily censored and watered down story, CBS's "60 Minutes" tv program mentioned that 550 such supposed "defectors" were housed and became residents, with their families, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Not mentioned was the real details. Namely, that 2,000 of such were set up, with federal subsidies for them and their families, housing, rent, food, and such IN OKLAHOMA CITY. AND, that they were involved in using Timothy McVeigh, and others as surrogates, whether directly or immediately known by him and others or not.
Many years after my original exclusive stories, a huge documented book came out. It documented how between 4 thousand and 13 thousand such Iraqis were brought into the U.S.and vast sums spent on them. AND YET, the report states, U.S. citizens, as former soldiers, were often being DENIED benefits from the Veterans Administration.
"Final Report---On the Bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building April 19, 1995", by The Oklahoma Bombing Investigation Committee, 2001, P.O.Box 75697, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73147, pages 476-477.
[9] Just prior to the Timothy McVeigh trial, his Chief Defense Counsel, Stephen Jones, filed in the Federal Appeals Court, a special petition against the trial judge, Richard Matsch. Jones sought to compel the trial judge to release records of the American CIA and others, that showed there was, among other things, an Iraqi connection, and that defendant Timothy McVeigh was a domestic dissident surrogate for Iraq apparently seeking revenge on U.S. soil against the U.S. The government and the trial Judge contended that the CIA was a different unit of the U.S. government and Jones could only seek records from the Justice Department. That is like claiming someone has money in another pocket of his jacket or pants. In his 185 page petition Jones surprisingly refers to both the public Court Record AND THE SECRET COURT RECORD as to the Iraqi connection.
The press were silent about Jones' petition which was summarily refused and denied. Recently, a group of those whose loved ones died in the Oklahoma bombings, brought a damage suit against the government of Iraq. Evidently they were seeking to get at, by way of damages, Iraq funds frozen within the U.S. jurisdiction. The monopoly press said little about this.
[10] On April 4, 2003, a spokesman purportedly for the Baghdad government, stated that the Iraqis had what he described as a non-military surprise for the U.S. Military forces acting as foreign invaders in his country. He denied it was a Weapon of Mass Destruction.
Was he hinting that "blue lightning", made available to Iraq by Daddy Bush at a time Bush was a private business partner of Saddam Hussein, would be used to teach the U.S. a lesson in how a small nation of 24 million people could resist a monstrous, well-equipped aggressor of 280 million people?
Some unanswered questions:
===Will "blue lightning", a sub-atomic weapon, apparently not as serious as a nuclear weapon, be used, for example, against the huge airport near Baghdad, once called Saddam Hussein International Airport, renamed by the U.S. Military as Baghdad International Airport? Are the makings of "blue lightning" in the tunnels and passageways under that airport?
===Will the "blue lightning" weapon, if used by Iraq, tend to unravel Daddy Bush and his crony, Bill Clinton, and their prior knowledge and complicity as to the Oklahoma City multiple bombings? And maybe, even expose Daddy Bush and monsters in the U.S. Military brass having carried out the disasters of September 11, 2001, falsely blamed on "Arabs", but calculated to destroy the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights? Remember, how to do such a thing was documented in the book "Body of Secrets" by James Bamford which came out right before 9-11, as to how the top U.S. Military in 1962, "Operation Northwoods", planned to commit horrible violence against fellow Americans to blame onto Cuba to justify the U.S. invading Cuba.
===If the truth about "blue lightning" comes out, will ordinary Americans find out what really took down, as by controlled demolitions, the World Trade Center twin towers and WTC Building 7 in Manhattan, September 11, 2001?
===Will common Americans come to understand that 9-11 is part of a long series of events, to Overthrow the American Republic?
===In the process of finding out about "blue lightning", as a direct or side issue, will common Americans come to wonder about the following:
One of the first network reporters to show up to cover the Oklahoma City bombings was Dan Raviv, CBS News International/National Correspondent. Is it just a mere coincidence that he co-authored the book about The Mossad, Israeli Intelligence, "Every Spy A Prince: The Complete History of Israel's Intelligence Community", co-authored with Yossi Melman, 1990. Also, the same two co-authored "Friends in Deed: Inside the U.S.-Israel Alliance". Did a faction in The Mossad have prior knowledge of the Oklahoma City bombings and in vain, informed Daddy Bush and Bill Clinton, who for geopolitical and other power purposes allowed it to happen? And did The Mossad have prior knowledge of 9-11 and, in vain, informed the George W. Bush White House who allowed it to happen anyway to be falsely blamed onto "Arabs"? FBI Deputy Director John P. O'Neill, a leading counter-terrorist expert, was blocked by the Bush White House from continuing to investigate Osama bin Laden. Why? Because it would lead back to the Bush Crime Family, the Carlyle Group, and others.Quitting FBI about August, 2001, O'Neill became the Security Chief of the World Trade Center, lured at the last minute into one of the buildings, and there perished.
AND, who mentions that George W. Bush's younger brother Marvin, was a director of an insurance company having coverage of the twin towers and he apparently cancelled his company's coverage BEFORE the disaster. Further, Marvin Bush was a director of a firm that arranged the security of the twin towers. [Put MARVIN BUSH into a good website search engine and see what all you pull up.]
My stories are unacceptable to the monopoly press. Do not heckle me, demanding that I make available stories like this to the newsfakers---as if I am responsible for them censoring stories like this.
More coming....Stay tuned.

SUPPOSED "SMOKING GUN" TURNS OUT TO BE PESTICIDE.
Mon Apr 7, 1:52 PM ET
NEAR NAJAF, Iraq (AFP) - A facility near Baghdad that a US officer had said might finally be "smoking gun" evidence of Iraqi chemical weapons production turned out to contain pesticide, not sarin gas as feared.
A military intelligence officer for the US 101st Airborne Division's aviation brigade, Captain Adam Mastrianni, told AFP that comprehensive tests determined the presence of the pesticide compounds.
Initial tests had reportedly detected traces of sarin -- a powerful toxin that quickly affects the nervous system -- after US soldiers guarding the facility near Hindiyah, 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad, fell ill.
Mastrianni said: "They thought it was a nerve agent. That's what it tested. But it is pesticide."
He said a "theatre-level chemical testing team" made up of biologists and chemists had finally disproved the preliminary field tests results and established that pesticide was the substance involved.
Mastrianni added that sick soldiers, who had become nauseous, dizzy and developed skin blotches, had all recovered.
The turnaround was an embarrassment for the US forces in the region, which had been quick to say that they thought they had finally found the proof they have been actively looking for that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction.
A spokesman for the US army's 3rd Infantry Division, Major Ross Coffman, had told journalists at Baghdad's airport that the site "could be a smoking gun".
"We are talking about finding a site of possible weapons of mass destruction," he added.
The fact that the coalition forces have come up with no clear evidence of WMD after capturing much of Iraq in 19 days of fighting has raised questions over the war's justification. |

US helped as Saddam plotted chemical attacks, report says
London Guardian 08/19/02: David Teather
Original Link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,776844,00.html
The US conducted a covert military campaign to help Iraq during its war with Iran, despite knowing that Baghdad intended to use chemical weapons in a number of battles, according to a report in the New York Times.
The report says the programme was carried out during the Reagan administration, at a time when the White House was publicly condemning Iraq for its use of lethal gas.
President George Bush and the his national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, have repeatedly cited Iraq's use of gas during the 1981-1988 conflict as justification for a potential attack on the country.
The report quotes senior officers with direct knowledge of the secret programme.
The sources said that US aid was given in the form of critical battle planning assistance.
It has long been known that the US provided intelligence to the Iraqis from satellite photography to help them see where Iranian forces were massing against them.
But the highly classified programme is said to have involved more than 60 defence intelligence agency officers who secretly provided information on Iranian deployments, tactical planning for battles, plans for air strikes and bomb-damage assessments.
The allegations may embarrass the secretary of state, Colin Powell, who was Ronald Reagan's national security adviser.
Through a spokesman, he described the report as "dead wrong".
During the war the US wanted to see Iran thwarted, fearing that it would overrun other oil producing states and possibly spread its Islamic revolution.
Frank Carlucci, a former defence secretary, said he understood that Iraq was given "general order-of-battle information, not operational intelligence". He added: "I did agree that Iraq should not lose the war, but I certainly had no foreknowledge of their use of chemical weapons."
The officers cited said that although Iraq did not share its plans to use chemical weapons, it had become increasingly evident that they were part of the nation's arsenal.
Colonel Walter Lang, who was a senior defence intelligence official at the time, said the defence intelligence agency and the CIA were "desperate" to make sure that Iraq did not lose the war with Iran. "The use of gas on the battlefield by the Iraqis was not a matter of deep strategic concern," he told the Times.
Another veteran of the programme said the Pentagon "wasn't so horrified by Iraq's use of gas. It was just another way of killing people - whether by bullet or phosgene, it didn't make any difference."

Report: U.S. Finds Missiles with Chemical Weapons
Reuters
Monday, April 7, 2003; 10:25 AM

Chemical hypocrites

As it struggles to justify its invasion, the US is getting ready to use banned weapons in Iraq
George Monbiot
Tuesday April 8, 2003
The Guardian
When Saddam Hussein so pig-headedly failed to shower US troops with chemical weapons as they entered Iraq, thus depriving them of a retrospective justification for this war, the American generals explained that he would do so as soon as they crossed the "red line" around Baghdad. Beyond that point, the desperate dictator would lash out with every weapon he possessed.
Well, the line has been crossed and recrossed, and not a whiff of mustard gas or VX has so far been detected. This could mean one of three things: Saddam's command system may have broken down (he may be dead, or his troops might have failed to receive or respond to his orders); he is refraining, so far, from using chemical weapons; or he does not possess them.
The special forces sent to seize Iraq's weapons of mass destruction have yet to find hard evidence at any of the 12 sites (identified by the Pentagon as the most likely places) they have examined so far. As Newsweek revealed in February, there may be a reason for this: in 1995, General Hussein Kamel, the defector whose evidence George Bush, Tony Blair and Colin Powell have cited as justification for their invasion, told the UN that the Iraqi armed forces, acting on his instructions, had destroyed the last of their banned munitions. But, whether Saddam is able to use such weapons or not, their deployment in Iraq appears to be imminent, for the Americans seem determined on it.
Chemicals can turn corners, seep beneath doors, inexorably fill a building or a battlefield. They can kill or disable biological matter while leaving the infrastructure intact. They are the weapons that reach the parts other weapons can't. They are also among the most terrifying instruments of war: this is why Saddam used them to such hideous effect, both in Iran and against the Kurds of Halabja. And, for an occupying army trying not to alienate local people or world opinion, those chemicals misleadingly labelled "non-lethal" appear to provide a possibility of capturing combatants without killing civilians.
This, to judge by a presidential order and a series of recent statements, now seems to be the US government's chosen method for dealing with Iraqi soldiers sheltering behind human shields, when its conventional means of completing the capture of Baghdad have been exhausted. It makes a certain kind of sense, until two inconvenient issues are taken into account. The deployment of these substances would break the conventions designed to contain them; and the point of this war, or so we have endlessly been told, is to prevent the use of chemical weapons.
Last week Bush authorised US troops to use teargas in Iraq. He is permitted to do so by an executive order published in 1975 by Gerald Ford, which overrides, within the US, the 1925 Geneva protocol on chemical weapons. While this may prevent Bush's impeachment in America, it has no standing in international law.
The chemical weapons convention, promoted by George W's father and ratified by the US in 1997, insists that "each state party undertakes not to use riot control agents as a method of warfare". Teargas, pepper spray and other incapacitants may be legally used on your own territory for the purposes of policing. They may not be used in another country to control or defeat the enemy.
For the past two months, US officials have been seeking to wriggle free from this constraint. In February, the defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, told Congress's armed services committee that "there are times when the use of non-lethal riot agents is perfectly appropriate". He revealed that he and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Richard Myers, had been "trying to fashion rules of engagement" for the use of chemical weapons in Iraq.
Rumsfeld, formerly the chief executive of GD Searle, one of the biggest drugs firms in the US, has never been an enthusiast for the chemical weapons convention. In 1997, as the Senate was preparing to ratify the treaty, he told its committee on foreign relations that the convention "will impose a costly and complex regulatory burden on US industry". Enlisting the kind of self-fulfilling prophecy with which we have since become familiar, he maintained that it was not "realistic", as global disarmament "is not a likely prospect". Dick Cheney, now vice-president, asked the committee to record his "strong opposition" to ratification.
Last month Victoria Clarke, an assistant secretary in Chemical Donald's department, wrote to the Independent on Sunday, confirming the decision to use riot control agents in Iraq, and claiming, without supporting evidence, that their deployment would be legal. Last week the US Marine Corps told the Asia Times that CS gas and pepper spray had already been shipped to the Gulf. The government of the US appears to be on the verge of committing a war crime in Iraq.
Given that the entire war contravenes international law, does it matter? It does, for three reasons. The most immediate is that there is no such thing as a non-lethal chemical weapon. Gases that merely incapacitate at low doses, in well-ventilated places, kill when injected into rooms, as the Russian special forces found in October when they slaughtered 128 of the 700 hostages they were supposed to be liberating from a Moscow theatre. It is impossible to deliver a sufficient dose to knock out combatants without also delivering a sufficient dose to kill some of their captives.
The second reason is that, if they still possess them, it may induce the Iraqi fighters to retaliate with chemical weapons of their own. At the same time, it encourages the other nations now threatened with attack by Bush to start building up their chemical arsenals: if the US is not prepared to play by the rules, why should they?
The third reason is that the use of gas in Iraq may serve, in the eyes of US citizens, to help legitimise America's illegal chemical weapons development programme. As the US weapons research group Sunshine Project has documented, the defence department and the army are experimenting with chemicals which cause pain, fear, convulsions, hallucinations and unconsciousness, and developing the hollow mortar rounds required to deliver them.
Among the weapons they are testing is fentanyl, the drug which turned the Moscow theatre into a gas chamber. Since March 2002, the government's "non-lethal weapons directorate" has been training the Marine Corps in the use of chemical weapons. All these activities break the convention.
The deployment of chemicals in Baghdad could be the event which finally destroys the treaties designed to contain them, and this, in turn, would be another step towards the demolition of international law and the inception of a bloody and brutal era, in which might is unconstrained by universal notions of right.
You cannot use chemical weapons to wage war against chemical weapons. They are, as the convention makes clear, the instruments of terrorists. By deploying them, the US government would liquidate one of the remaining moral distinctions between its own behaviour and that of the man it asks us to abominate.

New Report says Oil the US Motive

New Iraq Report: Yes, Tony, There is a Conspiracy
08.04.2003 [16:45]
http://www.rumormillnews.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?read=30900
Here's the prewar zeitgeist in a nutshell: In a widely reported January 16 speech, Tony Blair proclaimed that the impending invasion of Iraq "has nothing to do with oil, or any of the other conspiracy theories put forward."
One week later, Sen. Richard Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, quietly passed word to Russia and France that their countries will be frozen out of staggeringly lucrative postwar oil contracts unless they roll over and endorse the US attack.
Yes, Tony, there is a conspiracy, in the dictionary sense of the term: an agreement among people to perform a criminal or wrongful act. It consists, not of a tiny cabal, but of the whole of the American power elite, from politicians to business executives to journalists. It has everything to do with oil. But it is not secret.
The conspirators know they can count on the uncritical support of the mass media. Therefore knowledge of their cynical motives and thuggish tactics can be made available in journals and other specialized fora, all but invisible to most Americans but accessible to the few with sufficient time and inclination to dig beneath the headlines.
Building on that knowledge, a Mumbai-based independent think tank has now anatomized the conspiracy behind the coming war and issued a truly comprehensive explanation of the current global crisis.
Behind the Invasion of Iraq, the startling new book-length report authored by the Research Unit for Political Economy (RUPE), synthesizes the seemingly disparate threads of the US war drive in what amounts to a blistering indictment of American foreign policy. The report (available on the Web at www.rupe-india.org) is lavishly documented and jargon-free; the effect, especially for readers with limited understanding of global commerce and finance, is of puzzle pieces clicking decisively into place.
The RUPE report wholly confirms the widely-held view of the coming war as a massive oil grab, "on a scale not witnessed since the days of colonialism." Further, the current debate about arms inspections and alleged links to al-Qaeda is revealed as pure political theater, since the decision to invade Iraq was made months ago.
But seizure of Iraq's multi-trillion-dollar petroleum reserves is only the immediate goal, the report shows. RUPE's rigorous analysis of publicly available sources -- including official documents, think-tank papers, and press reports -- reveals that the US intends to use the invasion of Iraq as a launching pad for a drastic reshaping of the Middle East, to be followed by an unprecedented expansion of US power worldwide. The strategic trend of US foreign policy now points unmistakably towards global empire.
To be sure, an imperial project on so ambitious a scale entails big downside risks for the US, including staggering costs, military hazards, and the disruption of global "stability" (i.e., the dearly-bought loyalty of US allies and client states.) But the American Establishment seems prepared to go for broke, and its enthusiastic consensus behind a naked war of conquest cannot be explained solely by the "cowboy mentality" that some detect in the White House.
What's really at stake -- and this will come as no surprise to leftists -- is US control of global markets. The report reveals that the US economy is now facing a nightmare scenario: A crisis of overproduction has crippled US GDP, resulting in monstrous trade and budget deficits, even as a potentially disastrous deflationary spiral appears to be under way worldwide.
Meanwhile, superpower rivals Europe, Russia and China are mounting a vigorous challenge to US economic preeminence, which is further threatened by the euro's emergence as a credible alternative to the dollar as global reserve currency. (All this is exhaustively detailed in the RUPE report, which draws its most telling evidence from the mainstream financial press.)
In this context, the US sees confiscation of the world's richest oil-producing regions as a magic bullet. While securing its own access to petroleum supplies for the foreseeable future, it can simultaneously defend dollar hegemony and restructure Middle East markets for the exclusive benefit of US-based corporations.
Which brings us to the crux: Direct American control of oil would render any potential challengers for world or regional supremacy perpetually dependent on US forbearance. In RUPE's words, "once it has seized the oil wells of west Asia the US will determine not only which firms would bag the deals, not only the currency in which oil trade would be denominated, not
only the price of oil on the international market, but even the destination of the oil."
RUPE's argument here is powerful but complex, and this summary is necessarily an extreme oversimplification. But the overall thrust is quite clear: The US invasion of Iraq needs to be understood not as an end in itself but as the means to an end -- the foundation of a New American Empire.
Needless to say, you won't catch Tony Blair owning up to the war's real purpose as he flogs it to a skeptical public. But the truth, or something pretty close to it, is now readily available to anyone who cares to look.
Jacob Levich, a writer and editor based in Queens, N.Y., assisted RUPE in researching Behind The Invasion of Iraq -- which is a fancy way of saying he forwarded several hundred articles to an email address in Mumbai. He can be reached at: jlevich@earthlink.net |

Good news !!!
Jailed Iraqi children run free as marines roll into Baghdad suburbs
BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 100 children held in a prison celebrated their freedom as US marines rolled into northeast Baghdad amid chaotic scenes which saw civilians loot weapons from an army compound, a US officer said.
Around 150 children spilled out of the jail after the gates were opened as a US military Humvee vehicle approached, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Padilla told an AFP correspondent travelling with the Marines 5th Regiment.
"Hundreds of kids were swarming us and kissing us," Padilla said.
"There were parents running up, so happy to have their kids back."
"The children had been imprisoned because they had not joined the youth branch of the Baath party," he alleged. "Some of these kids had been in there for five years."
The children, who were wearing threadbare clothes and looked under-nourished, walked on the streets crossing their hands as if to mimic handcuffs, before giving the thumbs up sign and shouting their thanks.
It was not clear who had opened the doors of the prison.
Civilians also took advantage of the collapse of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s authority to grab weapons from an army base, said Group Sergeant Jeff Treiber.
As marines were alerted by radio that civilians had seized weapons, Treiber warned that anyone seen to be armed could be a target of US-British coalition forces.
"With the weapons they are becoming combatants," said Treiber. "If they don't take the weapons they will be fine."
Other residents stole air conditioning units, television sets and furniture from government buildings in an echo of the looting that was seen in the southern city of Basra.
A 19-year-old called Haider said people had been ransacking government compounds since the morning to steal weapons and furniture.
"Since the morning, nine o'clock, they have been looting. They are stealing weapons and I took three doors," he said.
At one stage the marines opened fire after coming under attack from snipers, leaving at least two civilians wounded.
One man needed treatment for gunshot wounds to his stomach and left arm.
But his friend, Abdul Amir Jaffa, said he did not resent the Americans despite the shooting.
"Americans are coming to free us," he told AFP.
The marines became increasingly edgy as crowds of people took to the streets to observe their progress.
"It's a problem with so many people in the area. Its hard to tell if there are enemy forces among them. You have to be careful returning fire with civilians all over the place," Lieutenant Anthony Sousa said.
Troops from the Marines' 1st Expeditionary Force also entered Baghdad on the east of the city Tuesday as thousands of armoured vehicles and Humvees poured into the capital for a showdown with Saddam Hussein's troops.

I don't view it as "anti-US".
The GLOBALISTS stand to gain from this war. Plain and simple.
The "Iraqi Liberation " will be short-lived.
Another dictator will be installed if Bu$h and crew will get their way.
I find it HIGHLY amusing that the US didn't give a rats @$$ about "Iraqi civilians" for years and years untill the PNAC and Bu$h finally found an "excuse" to invade.
Funny how the US still supports brutal regimes all over the world and doesn't have a problem with THEIR dicatators doing the same or WORSE to their children.
It's total theatre and total hypocricy. |

Americans' Support for War on the Rise
By Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, April 7, 2003; 6:40 PM
As U.S. forces continue the battle of Baghdad, support for the war in Iraq continues to rise.
The latest Washington Post-ABC News Poll shows that 77 percent of Americans say they support the decision to go to war, a figure that has increased as news of the war turned positive. Just 16 percent say they oppose having gone to war.
The support is not evenly distributed, however. More men support going to war than do women; southerners are more likely to say they support the war than are westerners. The more the population is broken down by category -- gender, ideology, party, income or age -- the more those differences are apparent.
Roughly half or more of every demographic group measured now supports the war. Opposition rises above one-third among only two groups: African Americans and liberal Democrats.
Republicans almost universally support the decision to go to war. Democrats are more divided, although nearly two-in-three Democrats now say they support the war. Whites are far more supportive than are African-Americans.
Republican men and Republican women support the war in almost equal numbers, but fewer Democratic women back the operation in Iraq than do Democratic men.
Viewed by age, the most ardent supporters of the war are those between 45 and 54. That means Americans who came of age in the latter stages of the Vietnam War, many of whom may have been involved in protesting that conflict, are now overwhelmingly pro-war in Iraq.
Americans who say they have a close friend serving in the Persian Gulf are somewhat more supportive of the war than are those who say they have a member of their family stationed in the region.
Post staff writers Richard Morin and Claudia Deane contributed to this report.
