2001 Leonid Forecasts PostSat Nov 10, 2001 7:58 am  Reply with quote

a week from this sunday looks to be a good year to skywatch, the graphs here indicate that it is time to buy some high speed film... ...

Observers in North America, Hawaii, Australia and Asian countries along the Pacific Rim will be favored for the best views of the 2001 Leonids. Meteor rates in those places could climb as high as 8000 per hour -- not quite as intense as the 1966 storm, but more than enough to make a sky watcher's jaw drop

Thanks for the heads-up, seeker! I might just brave the elements this year!

quote:

If you're determined to spot some Leonids this year, here is the best strategy: Dress warmly and travel (if necessary) to a dark-sky site away from urban light pollution. Be prepared to watch the sky between midnight and sunrise on Sunday morning, Nov. 18th. Meteor rates will probably be low near midnight -- although that is a good time to see beautiful Earthgrazing Leonids -- then climb to 10 or 20 per hour by dawn. If you're lucky you might witness a storm-level outburst and count thousands of shooting stars.

BTW, unlike the instructions for most astronomical events, the times indicated are for your own local time. (Don't ask me to explain, because there's math, and it's early...)

on the cusp of one of the best meteor showers in 35 years, Oklahoma is getting rain...first rain in 2 months...it's a slow mover and looks like I'm going to get screwed by mother nature again...

good luck 3t3, you *may* get to see a few thousand...

maybe art bell could do a group "think" to push the upper level low east !

this is almost turning into a "high hopes" thread for me...lol...but I seen one meteor and a blue / green flash...the next three hours will be good for some who don't live in the mid west, the reports are comming in at http://www.spaceweather.com/ and presently I am being teased with *breaks* in the clouds...would everyone west of me go outside and exhale please ?....

They were beautiful!!!! We woke up about 4:00 am and went to a dark spot, laid on the hood of the car and watched until it started getting light. If I looked straight up, I could see untold numbers of meteors falling at the edge of the horizon in my peripherial vision. Plus some really big ones with green tails, and a couple of orange ones.
