Need to point out on incorrect assertion by goldrush:

One MAIN thing that is not ever shown, is a jet actually in the picture of, one of these contrails. The reason why, is because the jet has passed miles beyond and these types of contrails are remannts that did not dissipate entirely. The blunt edges are formed by vertical up or down drafts.
Although the effect goldrush describes can certainly occur, she is describing contrails. Contrails can disappate some time after they are created and leave segments. If there were a substance being sprayed intermittently, I would think that any resultant segments would appear as they were sprayed.
These photos that I took over Houston show that goldrush's blanket statement is not correct. The jet that left this relatively short strip is easily seen in the photo on the right. I witnessed this airplane leave the strip. The strip had distinct edges from the moment it appeared. This aircraft did not appear on Flight Explorer, and so I presume it was military.

I haven 3T3's dyslexia again, Thermit. Where is the plane in your photo? Is it in line with the two strips of contrail? |

3T3, here is the plane. It is the small dot at the right end of the contrail here...
In the first photo I posted, the plane is at the right edge of the contrail on the right. |

Thermit to me , those strips would be a smigeon of cold air that exists in warmer surroundings allowing for ice crystals to form...pretty much an impossibility to know for sure though...my thoughts on this would be that if the atmosphere would support contrails all the time, we would see trails that do not break apart, stop and start...or on and off...they would continue from engine to horizon...and look similar to this...

Well, perhaps a little video documentation of this phenomena would help to clarify the matter further...
