The American space agency Nasa has been accused of doctoring its pictures of Mars to make the Martian surface conform to our impression of the famously red planet.
The Martian surface sent from the Opportunity rover. Nasa has been accused of 'tweaking' the pictures
Nasa has been accused of digitally "tweaking" drab brown scenery to make it redder. It has even been suggested that Nasa removed green patches to hide evidence of life.
The theories gained credence after Nasa told New Scientist that "getting the colours right is a surprisingly difficult and subjective job", the magazine reports today.
Most of the pictures have been taken through green, blue and infra-red filters - instead of green, blue and standard red filters, which would have produced more accurate colours.
Dr Jim Bell, who worked with Nasa on the Mars rovers' cameras, said infrared filters were used because they helped geologists to distinguish rock types.
In reality, Mars appears red largely because of the dust in its atmosphere.
COULD THERE BE SOMETHING ABOUT MARS THEY ARENT TELLING US.....HMM WHAT ARE YOU SOME
KIND OF "CONSPIRACY NUT"? NASA ALWAYS TELLS
THE TRUTH.

Real Color of Mars Suppressed:
The above color images of Mars were taken in 1999, across almost 60 million miles (!) by a talented amateur astronomer in Oeiras, Portugal -- Antonio Cidadao. They were acquired with a modest 10-inch "Schmidt-Cassegrain" reflecting telescope, and a commercially available CCD (charge coupled device) camera. Mr. Cidado’s total investment in his "Mars imaging system" – commercial telescope and electronic camera, plus computer to process the images, and the appropriate software -- was approximately three thousand American dollars ….

Oh PUH-LEEZE! That is so lame! Even if they used the incorrect combination of filter colors, all NASA had to do (prior to releasing the photos) was to correct the color contrast by comparing them to the earth-side pictures of the Sprit Rover. Duh!
My current favorite controversial pieces of evidence from Mars is the machinery-type images you can see here:
