Thanks for your help. I will try and track down a good working HD and see if I can figure it out. I think the DVD ROM was on the same channel as the HD.
I will let you know the results.

Problem fixed, and old hard drive appears to be just fine.
Why it was not able to find the hard drive before after the firmware flashing problem, I not know, but I went out and bought a new Seagate 80 gig (on clearance at BB for 49.99), and was noticing the cable select feature and what it meant, which I admit I honestly never knew. Switched the jumper over from master to cable select, and booted up perfectly.
It worked just fine previously, so why it had to be changed over, I do not know.
Thanks for the help. I had bought the new HD to try and reinstall xp and hopefully transfer those old files over if they were still there, which they were along with everything else on the drive.
Its nice to have my desktop back

Even managed to resurrect my DVD ROM drive too this morning. Used MTKFLASH from a DOS boot, and flashed it to that ide channel, since the drive itself was not recognizable.
Brought it back from the dead!

With DVD-R prices dropping, I backup 4 - 200 gig drives every night, or when I get 4.3 gigs of new data.
DV Video goes to a DV-Cam deck that also uses mini-DV tape, but it goes on as video, NOT data. They hold one hour of video, which would translate to 15 gigs of data. Price wise, it is not much different ($5 for an hour), but saves the DVD-R's strictly for data.
DO NOT use a program called DVBackup. It uses mini-DV for DATA only. One bit dropped during a 15 gig backup, and ......FLUSH! goes the whole tape. BAD very bad! that's why DAT is sometimes better for audio backup and mini-DV for Video Backup, because even if you drop data, you won't lose the whole session.
I usually make two backups of the same session on DVD-R, and simultaneuosly duplicate the data to an external firewire drive, just in case, and then delete the firewire data when the verify comes back OK.
