Chemtrails: Are they fact or fantasy?

GASTONIA — Shirley lives the ordinary life, active in her neighborhood’s Community Watch program and a volunteer at Brookside Elementary School where her three children attend.
But when Shirley looks into the sky, she sees danger in the vapor trails airplanes leave as they cross overhead.
No, she’s not a nut, she says. And no, she’s not alone.
"I started noticing them about a year ago," says the 37-year-old market research worker. "I thought they were spraying for mosquitos.
"Once you watch it for a while, you come to realize it’s not normal."
Contrails are the streaks of condensed water vapor created in the air by an airplane or rocket at high altitudes. With Gastonia’s proximity to Charlotte’s airport, there’s nothing unusual about seeing contrails in the sky.
But Shirley and her friends say these contrails are different. Instead of just disappearing after a few moments, these streaks spread out and stay and can turn a cloudless day hazy.
Sometimes more than one airplaine creates the trails, creating a criss-crossing pattern.
"At first I thought, ‘Aw, she’s losing her mind,’" says Shirley’s neighbor, 40-year-old Mark. "Then I started watching myself and noticing something was there that we didn’t have an answer for."
"It’s more than just regular air traffic," says Jane, 41, and another of Shirley’s friends. "It frightens me because I’d like to know what they’re doing."
Rather than contrails, Shirley and others call these streaks "Chemtrails," a name they got from the more than a dozen Internet sites devoted to tracking this so-called phenomenon from around the world.
They don’t claim to know what they are, or their purpose, nor does anyone else. Shirley’s best guess is that the planes have something to do with experiments to try to control the weather, a theory that has no official backing.
Shirley sometimes spends hours a day researching these trails on the Internet. She tracks her sitings on an Internet site that has gotten more than 30,000 hits.
Shirley also thinks she can connect their occurrences to increases in respiratory problems, rashes and dangerous ozone levels.
To counteract the problem, Shirley has taken her three children, off milk products and junk food to strengthen their immune systems.
Shirley predicted some people would tag her with a "conspiracy" buff label when she and Cox called the Gazette offices in mid-July to report the unusual patterns left in the sky late in the afternoon.
She says she doesn’t care as long as it gets people to look upward, just every once in a while and wonder.
"I’m sure there are several people who think I’ve lost my mind, but that doesn’t really bother me," Shirley said. "I’m just concerned about my kids and their future."
