P.S. Catnip, I forgot to tell you about my "Jet black" mushroom. It was about 5 inches in diameter and the entire top of it was little round segments clumped together...sorta looked like black caviar all stuck together. No sense scanning this one though, as everyone would swear I was taking pics of my pups turds! Kinda how it looked but hubby and I saw it was a mushroom near all the other kinds...I hesitantly touched the "edge" of it and it was "mushroomish" to the touch so it wasn't pooh, but was absolute jet black...never, ever saw a mushroom like this...what have I got going?...Fiendish garden "Sprites" planting "Demon seeds" or something? Yikes! Blessings love and light and peace, Joanne ^j^ |

Looking at that picture, I can say that that is not a mushroom but is a "lichen". Could also be edible, lol, but dont try it unless you have positively identified what species it is. Hmmm maybe this is the beginning of manna falling from the skies! Also , the black turd mushrooms may be lichens too. I am having trouble posting the link to a picture of the black puppy poo looking lichen, but it is called "collema coccophorum" or "tar jelly lichen", so if you do a search I am sure you will find a picture of what I'm talking about Delphi.

Delphi, we had one of those black things growing in the soil of one of our potted plants. It very ugly looking, definately growing up out of the dirt. It was different than the picture just above, and it had a bad smell to it. |

I'm not familiar with what "lichens' are...sounds like a name for lil German kids or something...I guess that's what they are...tho, my jet-black one was one large solid 5 or 6 in. piece with orb-like differentiations or striations in the main body of it...was not separate pieces at all, just one glob with the rounded segments looking like they had all formed together as one entity. Blessings and Thanx Thermit and Kneweyes...Learn somethin new everyday! Cool! Joanne ^j^ |

Delphi... your picture of the black fungus turned out good and clear. They kind of remind me of Elk droppings.
I just learned today from my mushroom book that some types of puffballs are actually edible. But I can't imagine eating one. |

Catnip, I can't take credit away from Thermit on that one...the lil black lichen turd-like pic was supplied by Thermit...no, I mean, not literally his turds, I mean, he found the pic someplace. Yikes, I better quit while I'm ahead! Catnip, the pic I have is so poor quality, it really does look like a pile a doo-doo, (to the untrained observer, of course)...I was gonna yell at hubbies pal as that guy has a beer and pees outside sometimes but crap??? I was hoping not. It really was "mushroom-like" when I felt the edge of it...now I know about "Lichen". I got another really weird mutant pic of orange-pink "lichen" or mushroom dealy, but maybe the blue ones enuf. This other one is split and looks like Siamese twin type of deal with little "bee-bee" sized mushrooms growing out from under it...about 10 or more of em...weird. What weird lil Lilliputin creatures do I have creepin around in my yard planting these babies? Yikes! Blessings, Joanne ^j^ |

Delphi... you've got a way with words.. LOL
I realized too late after I'd made my post that it wasn't your piture after all. But I thought your blue mushroom turned out pretty good. You know you could get some dark paper for a background and place your mushrooms on that for taking pictures. They might show up clearer that way.
