Letters to the Editor
Dear sirs:
As important as it is to oppose the foul and malignant, it is just as crucial to be able to recognize them, when you see them
Before going to cast votes, it is enlightening to look at an aspect of history.
Before what was touted as the end of the "Cold War", reasons trotted out, by none other than Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, for trying to eliminate the Soviet Union was that, first, they engaged in rampant unilateral operations, ignoring the wishes of neighboring countries, to pursue personal profit and national security interests; second, they carried out what the Oval Office depicted as "unprovoked aggression against weaker countries"; and, third, they did it all under the aegis of trying to spread Socialism, since it supposedly "protected the best interests of the public". This was all depicted as "indicating the selfish, irresponsible, contemptuous, dictatorial motivations of '”The Evil Empire'"!
But, how is any of this different from what the United States, under George W. Bush, is guilty of, today?
The entire motivation for any "foreign policy" move, under George W. Bush is either "American interests" or "security"!
Bush has made it a centerpiece of his "foreign policy" that he ignore the interests and wishes of other countries, in carrying out his machinations! When John Kerry brought up the fact that, essentially, we don't inhabit this planet alone, and that, certainly, as the most powerful nation, militarily, we have an obligation to consider the impact of purely self-serving policies on others, Bush literally mocked him on that basis!
Even before Iraq, the United States, under Republican “leadership” only tackled with conveniently small neighboring nations, such as El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama. That “philosophy” doesn’t seem to have changed in the assault on Iraq! The fact that none of those countries has engaged in any attack on the U.S. underlines the fact that America is utilizing the same “craven, cowardly, untrustworthy tactics” which were assigned to Russia, during the “Cold War”!
The emphasis on “spreading democracy” - which, face it, prates about “the welfare of the people, but, basically, is founded on only a tiny class of well-heeled, well-connected money grubbers and corporate connivers to rule everything! - is no different, evidently, from the Soviet program of “spreading Socialism”, especially when it serves only as a “justification” for robbing another land of its goods!
It is only the apparently corrupt and unscrupulous who would deny that the tactics of the U.S. under Bush were any different from the methods that the Soviet Union was condemned for using!
The U.S. is acting no differently than the “Evil Empire”!
And that will only get worse, if Bush is allowed another term in office!
In fact, it seems, it will certainly be promulgated again if any Republican is allowed in the Oval Office!
Those who vote for Bush, it appears, are motivated only by the quisling and craven “ethic” that “as long as it serves my wishes, and my goals, and makes me happy, it doesn’t matter what happens to anyone else! I’ll just lie and say they’re being served, when, in fact, I’ll be raping them ruthlessly, for my greed and selfishness!”
But lies and slavish dedication to the filthy self-interest of the corrupt and malignant is not how a nation should be run! And certainly not how the paragon that the U.S. always wanted to be should be! The last few decades have seen a selling out of principle in high places to quisling selfishness and ruthless acquisitiveness. Even the Democrats seem to have embraced the tenet of “anything goes, as long as I get rich!” In the end, those in positions of power and money have gotten more money and more influence, and the “rank and file” have only gotten the bill!
If government will not respect the rights of the people, and abide by conscience, it is up to the public to enforce those concerns!
No matter who wins, they can engage in wholesale campaigns of complaint and critique, through letters to mayors, governors, Congressmen, the president, and the media. If a large enough flood of letters is experienced, there is no way they could deny public opinion!
Those in positions of influence can be denied the life’s blood of their machinations if the people simply deny them money whenever and wherever possible! They can grow their own food! They can forego getting a new car, when their present car is still in good condition! They can forego getting a new home, just to show off how affluent they are! They can forego buying clothes, simply because they’re bored! They can watch fine old movies, rather than shell out $10 or more per person for that “heroin of the masses”! They can make life good where they are, rather than run away from problems on expensive vacations! They can acknowledge to themselves that the stock market seems geared only to make the rich richer! With all the taxes, fees, costs and charges they can save, they can deny upwards of $5000 a year, every individual, from the war mongers and thieves that seem to inhabit every level of government!
They can also just remind themselves that nothing the media or government tells you can be trusted!
Most important, though, they can involve themselves deeply in government around them, so that, when cravenness and connivery again show themselves, they can be pushed into the light immediately!
