Joe, I'd have a really hard time reconciling a system that large to be exclusively persistent contrails. What's over me now that the Sun's been up a couple of hours is pure cumulous, not the dispersed cirrus I associate with persistent contrails.
It's a pretty predictable cycle:
1 - sunrise, high altitude solid cover that breaks up after an hour or two of sunlight
2 - rapid cumulous formation by say 10am
3 - persistent contrails appear over these for several hours
4 - artificial cirrus white-out appears above the cumulous
5 - cumulous dispersal by late afternoon with heavy cirrus fibrosis
6 - twilight hours, dispersal of existing cirrus fibrosis and increased amount of persistent contrails
7 - new cirrus blanket that persists past sundown

That's not every single day, of course, but it's largely how it works here. I see *most* persistent contrails made here when the Sun is at a 45% position before and after noon.
I can't reconcile myself to associating persistent contrails and cumulous as they don't appear to exist in the same levels of the atmosphere, but I'm no meteorologist and I realize that.

I agree, ET,
This weather system stretches from Pennsylvania down to Southern Georgia, and is saturated with moisture absorbing chemicals within, above and around it. The advancing "chemcloud" ahead of this system is now just overspreading our region.

This morning we have a total fog bank from sealevel to about 800'
We have two jets flying one behind the other in circles above the fog
Niether one is emitting anything visible
They have been circling since about 9 AM, it is now 10 15 AM and they are still going around in circles |

We had another one of those nice, unnatural "drizzles" all day today, where the clouds look all liquidy, like stirred barely-melted ice cream.
on the way home there was a break in the clouds...
then, as the clouds broke, you could see the one in front of the sun...
I stepped back outside before i wrote this, and guess what...
I'm going to walk back out once i post this...

For the majority of the week,during daylite hours anyway,Oregon has been pretty clear.Late in the day we get the new "haze effect",some call it common air pollution.Have seen some whispy trails but haven't seen any spray planes. |
