Videotapes Contradict Cops’ Version of RNC Arrests

Apr 13 - Videotapes of the demonstrations outside the 2004 Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden are proving useful in helping to clear hundreds who were arrested on criminal charges during the event.
According to the New York Times, video footage made by private citizens, volunteer observers and police have provided the evidence needed to disprove or cast doubt on the allegations against around 400 of the 1,806 people arrested during the weeklong event spanning from late August to early September.
The Times reports that some of the tape clearly contradicts officers’ testimony about events while, in at least one case, the video was altered by the prosecution in order to edit out peaceful actions by the defendant. In that case, a more complete version of the footage exonerated the man, Alexander Dunlop, who was picking up food when we was arrested.
So far, 91 percent of the 1,670 cases that have run their full course through the legal system have resulted in the charges either being dropped or in a verdict of not guilty.
Prosecutors said that some videotapes have also supported their arguments in many of the 162 cases that have ended in convictions or guilty pleas. _________________ "You find me offensive? I find you offensive, for finding me offensive" |
