I mean it in the nicest possible way, but are you surprised? When I went to bed last night this thing was Cat 1.

Now it's a Cat 5.

I think it's safe to make a few tinfoil-hat assumptions here...

I'm not interested in hearing any more theories about how this storm has been artificially weakened.

Fla. Prepares for Record-Breaking Wilma

quote:
In what has become an all-too-familiar drill, Floridians boarded up windows, gassed up their cars and bought storm supplies Wednesday. But this time they were looking at the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic.

Hurricane Wilma exploded into a Category 5 monster with winds of 165 mph, and forecasters warned it could smash into southwestern Florida on Saturday with towering waves, and then work its way up the East Coast with devastating effect.

"I don't think I want to live in Florida," said Betty Bartelson, a Pennsylvania tourist visiting Marco Island. She planned to flee across the state to Fort Lauderdale.

Like Hurricanes Katrina and Rita earlier this season, Wilma was expected to weaken before coming ashore. But after seeing what those storms did — and after four storms hit Florida in quick succession last year — many people were taking no chances.

Officials began clearing tens of thousands of people out of the low-lying Florida Keys.

"We had well over a 1,000 lives lost in Katrina. If Wilma, you know, comes into the U.S., to the Florida coast as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane, that potential for large loss of life is with us,"
National Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield said.

Accuweather News

Hurricane Wilma rapidly gained strength overnight and is now a category 5 storm! A recon plane found a pressure of 892 mb around 2:30 this morning, then 884 mb around 5 a.m., ranking Wilma as the most intense hurricane to ever be recorded in the Atlantic basin! It is also the fastest intensification of any hurricane in recorded history. Wilma is packing winds over 175 mph, with higher gusts. AccuWeather.com Senior Hurricane Expert Joe Bastardi says it is a very compact storm, with an eye just 4 miles wide and hurricane force winds extending outward only 15 miles from center.

I certainly wasn't surprised that it got significantly stronger than forecast, but *was* surprised at just how huge that strengthening turned out to be.

Namely Hoagland's.

Even the blog posters are having a hard time swallowing the weird radar signature as a sign of an attempted weakening. There's no storm in our history that's got the mustard this one's shown in so short a period of time..

And he would have you believe that's AFTER someone tried to weaken it.

Gimme a break..

The behemoth of a hurricane Wilma nearly tipped the scales as it almost reached a strength for which no category yet exists. This monstrosity is setting precedents and breaking all kinds of records.

Wilma is currently a Cat 4 and barreling down upon Florida, its outer edge pounding Cancun.. There's still a chance though that it could rejuvenate itself again experts say to a Cat 5 (or higher?).

Wilma's
Rage Suggests New Hurricane Categories Needed

quote:
In a season that has included three Category 5 hurricanes for the first time on record in the Atlantic Basin, scientists are beginning to wonder if their rating system is adequate, LiveScience has learned.

quote:
On the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, there is no Category 6. But Hurricane Wilma this week brushed up against where a 6 would be if the scale were logically extrapolated to include another category.

And hurricanes are getting stronger, apparently fueled by global warming. Researchers expect that trend to continue.

quote:
An extrapolation suggests that if a Category 6 were there, it would be in the range of 176-196 mph. Hurricane Wilma, which had maximum recorded wind speeds of 175 mph, would have been on the verge of breaking into this hypothetical new category.

Wilma confounds experts, surprise, surprise.

Varying Wilma Models Confound Forecasters

quote:
In the time Max Mayfield has been at the National Hurricane Center, the forecasting of killer storms has gone from flying kites to satellites and computer models to help pinpoint the ferocity and landfall of storms. But Wilma has confounded the experts.

quote:
Using those models, forecasters predicted Wilma would meander a few days in the Gulf of Mexico and then race across southwest Florida or the Keys. Its slow speed has somewhat confounded them. While forecasters believe Wilma will be picked up by the jet stream and zoom across Florida, it hasn't happened as quickly as the models have predicted.

"It's going to take a little patience," Mayfield said.

Mayfield said one of the models used for Wilma has been a "windshield wiper," widely varying each time it was been used. In some computer runs, it showed Wilma off the coast of Maine after five days. In others, the same model showed the storm off the coast of Cuba.

When the models agree, it is simple for forecasters to determine the path and speed of a hurricane. When the models disagree, forecasters often use a consensus to determine what they believe is the correct path and speed of a hurricane, Mayfield said.

John Celenza, director of weather technology for The Weather Underground, a private weather company in San Francisco, said his company is having the same trouble predicting Wilma as the Hurricane Center.

"We're all the same boat," he said. "It's really up in the air right now."
