Denver votes to legalize marijuana possession PostSat Nov 05, 2005 10:37 pm  Reply with quote

Denver votes to legalize marijuana possession

quote:
Voters here approved making Denver the first major city to legalize small amounts of marijuana, but the mayor warned that state law still makes possession of the drug illegal.

"OK of pot issue gives new meaning to Mile High City," said Wednesday's headline in the Rocky Mountain News. The measure, which passed Tuesday with 54% of the vote, says adults 21 and older may possess up to an ounce of marijuana without penalty in the city.

quote:
Mason Tvert, who led the Denver campaign for legalized pot, said he will encourage people who are charged under state law to fight their arrests in court.

In Colorado, having an ounce of marijuana or less is punishable by a $100 fine but no jail time. "It's like a speeding ticket, and only a fraction of people end up going to court over it," said Tvert, founder of SAFER, or Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation.

Tvert said his group also will seek a state initiative to license and regulate the sale of marijuana. His campaign argued that legalized pot is a safer alternative, considering the problems that arise from alcohol abuse such as violent crime and health risks.

The mayor said he opposed the measure because he considers marijuana a "gateway" drug that can lead to harder substances and "much more self-destructive behaviors." Hickenlooper acknowledged, however, that Denver's vote "does reflect a genuine shift in people's attitudes."

COPS CALL FOR END OF DRUG WAR PostSun Nov 06, 2005 2:21 am  Reply with quote

http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=1579 COPS CALL FOR END OF DRUG WAR

Friday, October 28, 2005 - FreeMarketNews.com

One of the most influential groups calling for the government to end the war on drugs is an organization of law officers that have first hand experience of its failures, according to The Albuquerque Tribune. The Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), a lobby group against the war on drugs, is gaining attention because it has over 2,000 members that range from former police officers, and prosecutors to judges. The group includes many high-ranking officials such as a previous New York City police chief and Gary Johnson, a former Governor of New Mexico.

It is estimated that the government has spent over $500 billion on the war against drugs, but members of LEAP all have first-hand experience and maintain that current policies are having no effect. They argue that instead of sending drug users or sellers to jail, the government should focus its resources on treatment. Supply cannot be stopped in a free market, but demand can be reduced through appropriate intervention.

Despite massive budgets and resources thrown at the problem LEAP members point out that usage of methamphetamines is exploding throughout the country. Jack Cole, the executive director of LEAP says, “This is not a war on drugs. It's a war on people.” White House officials have accused LEAP of being misguided and irresponsible.

I got a better idea.

Let's make Industrial Hemp legal.

So I can drive a 3/4 ton Ford F-350 super duty that gets 22+ miles per gallon on HEMP based biodiesel fuel and put Bush and Cheneys oil buddies the Saudi Royal family OUT OF BUSINESS.?

just a thought.

I'm for RETURNING them both to their former legal status( like our great-grand parents enjoyed). Having the world's largest prison population on the planet (around 2.2 million now) many simply VICTIMS of the State for VICTIMLESS substance use *crimes* in this land of The Free is appalling not to mention very expensive and I want NO part in supporting it.

Industial hemp would be a blessing to this part of Missouri and this state could totally invigorate it's economy with the many many uses of this most valuable plant and all of the harvesting and processing machinery and technology and JOBS it would produce.

That great fighter for Freedom Ron Paul R-TX has a bill floating the halls of Congress now called : The Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2005.

For the first time in awhile I can actually say I'm impressed also about what some Democrats are doing in trying to bring this valuable crop opportunity back to the nations farmers and equipment manufacturers.

Here are some of the names attached to sponsorship: (Where are our *Freedom* loving entreprenurial Republican names besides ONE????

Tammy Baldwin (Dem. -Wisconsin 2nd)
Sam Farr (Dem.-California )17th
Barney Frank (Dem. -Mass. 4th)
Raul Grijalva (Dem.-Arizona 7th)
Jim McDermott (Dem.-Wash. 7th)
George MIller (Dem. California 7th)
Ron Paul (Rep.-Texas 14th)
Fortney Stark (Dem.-California 13th)

For those who want to support this bill and those in our govenment who support it and want to follow it's progress heres a link:

If we don't do something about the fossil fuel, we'll have to resort back to this.
