The Disillusionment Continues...

Germans: U.S. warned of bad data

quote:
The German intelligence officials responsible for one of the most important informers on Saddam Hussein's suspected weapons of mass destruction say that the Bush administration exaggerated his claims.

Five senior officials from Germany's Federal Intelligence Service, or BND, said that they warned U.S. intelligence authorities that the source, an Iraqi defector code-named Curveball, never claimed to produce germ weapons.

According to the Germans, President Bush mischaracterized Curveball's information when he warned before the war that Iraq had at least seven mobile factories brewing biological poisons. Then-Secretary of State Colin Powell also misstated Curveball's claims to the United Nations in 2003, the Germans said.

Curveball's handlers said his information was vague and impossible to confirm.

"This was not substantial evidence," a senior German intelligence official said. "We made clear we could not verify the things he said."

The German authorities also said that their informer suffered from emotional and mental problems.

"He is not a stable, psychologically stable guy," said a BND official who supervised the case. "He is not a completely normal person," a BND analyst agreed.

Curveball was the chief source of inaccurate pre-war U.S. claims that Baghdad had a biological weapons arsenal, a commission appointed by President Bush reported earlier this year.

This story piggybacks quite well with this one where Italy's intelligence also warned of false data pertaining to Iraq.

Italy 'warned Saddam intelligence was bogus'

quote:
Italian intelligence warned the United States about bogus information on Saddam Hussein's nuclear ambitions at about the time President Bush cited them as a crucial reason for invading Iraq, an Italian parliamentarian said yesterday.

I think it's damn near close to being time for the Bush administration to buckle up, place their heads in their laps and get ready to crash and burn. I'm so glad that these countries are becoming brave and they're finally willing to come out and divulge the truth about the pre-war fabrications. I wonder how many others will continue to follow this lead as the snowball gets rolling and gains momentum? This totally destroys the right-wing line that "...if Bush got it wrong, then so did everyone else". Apparently as suspected, everyone else didn't get it wrong, they only made the mistake of trusting the assumed "superior" intelligence gathering capabilities of the US. With two major cats out of the bag in Italy and Germany, there may very well be even more revelations yet to come corroberating one another? With each new exposure, the all consuming pit only gets that much deeper for you know who and his cohorts to get out of. Especially at a time when such impassioned discourse is running wild about an Iraq pullout.
