How embarrassing that as our country seeks to halt stem cell research based on "moral" objections other countries continue to prosper in the field. I wonder wonder though if the people here that are opposed to stem cell research will also reject the miraculous cures, breakthroughs and treatments that will most likely arise from it in the future? This is precisely why we need to protect science, which has performed so many wonders for humanity over the years from religion which wishes to oppress it.
Hwang's stem cell research valued at W33tr in 2015
quote:
The economic value of scientist Hwang Wu-suk's stem cell research is estimated to reach up to 33 trillion won by 2015, a report issued by Science & Technology Policy Institute said.
The report, published in the August issue of STEPI's internal periodical, said that the research by Hwang's team will bring economic gains worth between 6.6 trillion and 33 trillion won in the global market for medical treatments via stem cell research, which is expected to amount to 324 trillion won in 10 years.
The report set three possible levels - 'optimistic,' 'neutral,' and 'conservative' - depending on variables in legal systems and infrastructure that support the research.
At the 'neutral' and 'conservative' levels, the stem cell research by Hwang's team will help Korea account for 19.8 trillion won of the annual global market worth 194 trillion won and 6.6 trillion won in the 65 trillion won market, respectively, the report said.
The computations are based on the forecast that the value of stem cell technologies held by Korea will account for 17 percent of the world's total.
"The economic value of Dr. Hwang's research is so high mainly because it is focused on cures of Parkinson's and Altzheimer's diseases and diabetes, of which the number of patients are rapidly increasing," STEPI said.

My quick review...
The simple answer is, it was really good. It started off a little slow in the beginning as it chronicled the life of Jesus (as it has been told anyway), but once it picked up from there and got rolling it was great! I enjoyed the way it compared and contrasted the characteristics of all of the previous mythological characters of history and the many highly specific similarities between them and Jesus. It's as if every religion had its own version of Jesus but only with different names assigned to him?
We had a discussion here a long time ago about the movie The Passion of the Christ and this documentary basically reiterated my thoughts about it which is that it's a bizarre & gruesome three hour depiction of gratuitous violence. There are other movies describing the legacy of Jesus with much more substance about his teachings but it was the blood squirting, suffering, and agonizing imagery of Jesus that sold the best by far in the theaters. It also briefly goes in to the dangers of having our government rooted in and guided by these kinds of extreme, fundamentalist beliefs. Something I've been fearful off for a long time.
I enjoyed the man with the website that has a special e-mail notification service for "un-raptured" family members who are left behind wondering where their relatives have disappeared to. And then there's the rumors of an official Airline policy requiring the hiring of at least one non-Christian pilot to protect against the possibility of one of them vanishing in to rapture during flight. I have seen the "Death of a Spammer" article floating around on the net and being accepted as fact despite it being clearly labeled as fiction in the heading. He makes a good point about how quickly a fictional story can be transformed in to "fact" even over a short period of time. Imagine the many transformations and distortions that probably occurred with the aging stories of the Bible as they were told and re-told and inevitably embellished over so many years time?
I wished it was longer but it did have about an hours worth of extra features and extended interviews which I haven't seen all of yet. What makes the commentary even more potent is the fact that the producer of the film was a former fundamentalist himself who as he put it, "started thinking". The ending followed in the footsteps of Bowling for Columbine with the climactic interview and the interviewee ending it in frustration. Though not perfect, the production quality was much better than I had expected as well as far as the presentation goes. Many times documentaries like these can have a very low budget feel to them that can diminish the overall effect. As a whole I rate it three and a half stars out of four. That's a pretty favorable rating coming from me.
Notice in bold-faced text, "THIS STORY IS FICTION".
Death of a Spammer
I bought it used btw. That's probably why I got a pin and you didn't.
Et, now that I've followed your promptings and purchased this one, you need to find a way to see Greenwald's Wal-Mart flick that I've been talking about so much.
Besides, you owe me one for deleting my post yesterday.
(I thought of you as the devil bounced along the timeline)
