Oh, just looked at the featured video. Laughed out loud, what an incredibly dangerous manouvere (not)! Two airliners at an airway intersection 1000 or so feet apart. Happens countless times everyday.
Standard rules state aircraft should be at least 5 nautical miles OR 1000' apart. Meeting another aircraft at the same point in the sky at the same time is not unusual. Hence the reason we don't use the "Big Sky" theory!
As for the comments from the ex-instructor, well, I'm glad he didn't teach me.
