WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Greenhouse gases are making the world even warmer than anybody had predicted, and it is almost certainly the fault of humans, a draft report from an international climate group concludes.

Moreover, "there is now stronger evidence for human influence on global climate," the scientists concluded in their preliminary report, which was distributed to more than 100 governments this week for review."

"Arctic ozone damage 'likely by 2020'"

"One of the three British scientists who discovered the Antarctic ozone hole says similar damage is likely soon in the Arctic.

The scientist, Jonathan Shanklin, says the Earth's ozone layer is cooling, which makes its recovery more difficult.

The cooling is the result partly of ozone loss itself, and also of a little-noticed effect of global warming."

There are resident disinformation agents on this board who choose to espouse marginal, fringe data suggesting that such concerns are a hoax, "seeking" to maintain an oblivious status quo. No surprise that one such contrarian, the self-professed marine propulsion engineer, also has past ties to oil companies.

Like your latest gas bill? Seen the recent profits of major oil companies?

No wonder they don't want a change.

And no surprise that they have propagandists working daily to protect their profiteering.

I agree with you completely. It is my opinion that the chemistry and circulation of the atmosphere have been significantly altered by a number of factors, not the least of which is the incidence of supersonic and subsonic aircraft continually ripping through the upper troposphere and the tropopause. I feel that the "contrails" we are now seeing are a "litmus test" of current atmospheric conditions and are showing us VERY CLEARLY that atmospheric chemistry is seriously altered.

I am tired of dancing around this issue. I have felt this way for months. I remember saying many times, way back in the 70's, that one of these days "the toilets are going to stop flushing." I believe we are polluting ourselves into oblivion. If watching the sky turn from clear blue to a chaotic mess of swirling "emissions" in a matter of hours on a day-to-day basis isn't enough to convince us that we are in trouble I DON'T KNOW WHAT IN HELL WILL!!!

To those of you who are "spared" this reality, good for you. Please let me know where you live so I can relocate. As it is, my health is now being directly affected by the lack of sun, the constant bizarre "surface humidity", the arbitrary fluctuations in barometric pressure, the abnormally lowered and/or erratic surface temperatures and the general demoralization of rarely seeing a natural cloud over my area for the last 14 months. And I am no puling, whining wimp. I have been an extremely healthy, active person all my life. This is the first year, in the 34 years I have been in the workforce, that I have used up all my sick time. Unbelievable.

This body of information is being continually updated on a time-available basis. I do not think the ozone situation is our ONLY problem, but I do believe it may be the most pressing.

The Antarctic Vortex

Winds also play a key role in ozone destruction.

The cold air over Antarctica in winter creates a huge "whirlpool" of fast-moving air circling Antarctica called the "Antarctic vortex."

This vortex effectively insulates Antarctica from the rest of the atmosphere.

"It forms up almost as a whirlpool that sits there and is very stable. It locks in that body of air and it keeps the outside high-ozone air from coming in," McPeters said.

Most stratospheric ozone is created in the tropics, because the intensity of the solar radiation that causes formation of ozone is higher nearer the equator. The ozone is then transported by stratospheric air currents to the Arctic and to Antarctica.

The strong and stable vortex prevents the migration of ozone into the stratosphere over Antarctica, exacerbating the low levels caused by the ice crystal-catalyzed destruction of ozone.

Because of so many other factors innvolved with the ozone, IMO I don't see what we are doing to hurt it...

As far as earth pollutants , when I was doing research on MTBE I found really surprising stuff that was scary at best, some of the things I found were messageboards 50 times as active as this one that was selling every deadly chemical known to man in volume, oddly enough the chi-com's were very active on that board....
