Such un-American prattle would scarcely pass muster, nowadays.
Finally this, from John Adams:
"Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people... Be not intimidated, therefore, by any terrors, from publishing with the utmost freedom...nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberty by any pretenses of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery, and cowardice."
Of course, he was from Boston, even then a hot-bed of treason. What's more, despite his reputation for genius, he clearly lacked the imagination to anticipate that one day, "cowardice" would become a forbidden word.
Strange times. You'd think there was nothing vast and solemn and perilous to consider, in a world where evil has abruptly revealed itself, where the very gates of hell have opened up before our innocent eyes. At a moment when American greatness has been challenged by a real enemy -- ruthless, pitiless, barbaric, obsessed -- too many conservatives are managing to miss the point with terrifying thoroughness. It's an ill omen: at least, it is for those who love this country deeply and incurably. On the other hand, the speech-code commissars of the nanny-state left must be jumping for joy.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov told the visiting US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Friday that US forces could use one airbase - but strictly for search and rescue, and humanitarian, missions. Some ordinary Uzbeks are anxious about hosting US forces
He ruled out using the base - which is on the border of Afghanistan - for the launch of ground or air attacks, and said special operations forces would not be allowed into the country. Correspondents say that too clear a signal of support for the US could cause domestic problems in Uzbekistan, where many people admire the Taleban. The US troops are from the elite 10th Mountain Division. They will help defend the air base, which will be used by other US units involved in search and rescue operations. President Karimov said American troops would be allowed to fly a limited number of cargo planes and helicopters from the airfield. It will be the first time US military have been deployed for operational duties on former Soviet territory. Intelligence co-operation President Karimov also said his government was ready to increase intelligence co-operation with Washington.
