You are correct; Safeweb promises they destroy their logs etc, but it is unwise to trust these free third party sites blindly. Microsoft has been accused of providing back doors intentionally in software. I sometimes wonder if someone would make free "protection" software that everyone would use only to have a secret back door.

SKYWATCHER, when you see this message pop-up: "The firewall blocked access to your computer(aol)from 205.188.66.38 (aol)", this is the firewall protecting your system by blocking whoever is trying to gain access to your computer. The #205.188.66.38 is what you need to trace back. On the pop-up window there is a bar that says "more info". Click it to start your trace. Note: sometimes when I click "more info" I can't get through, so that is when I'll use another WHOIS to trace back the "ping". Good luck. Any more questions, just ask away!

RTW, the "world" does not see this info on you if you have a firewall, because it blocking them from seeing this. I have my zone alarm configured so that I am in "stealth" which means if someone tries to hack in or scan my ports it will seem like there is no computer here. Pretty nifty! And Rides, you are not pinging anyone's computer, so therefore, there's no way anyone could trace your IP back to you and get info. Get it?

When you enter a website, many times the cookies on that site will attempt to do a trace back on you. This is done to try and monitor what sites you visit and ultimately where your interests lie, and what your potential spending habits are. This is all aimed at advertising and the most effective way to snag your dollars. When that cookie traces back to your computer, if your zone alarm is configured properly (stealth) there will be no computer showing , they will pass you on by, but you have all the data on who was attempting entry via your zone alarm log + whois...
