I just compared notes with a few of my colleagues and on September 4th at approxmately 3:00 AM east coast time, we got hit by one of the worst thunderstorms that I have ever seen and was wondering if there was any kind of solar disturbance that could have been responsible for it. Sure enough, there was a disturbance.

For example, orgone accumulators, particularly those intended for biological experiments or human use, should never be used in rooms with the following orgone-irritating devices:
Fluorescent lights, television sets, computer or microcomputer, other cathode ray tube devices, microwave ovens, eddy-current stoves, electric blankets (even if only plugged in, and off), electric space heaters, diathermy, x-ray machines sparking electric motors induction devices or coils other electromagnetic devices ionization-type radioactive smoke detectors clocks, wristwatches, or other devices containing radioactive glow-in-the-dark materials (phospholuminescent materials, which work on the principle of absorbed visible light, are OK), other radioactive materials, or strong chemical fumes.

Orgone accumulators should not be used even in the same buildings where the more powerful of the above kinds of devices (such as x-ray machines) are used, or were recently used. Experiments by Reich, and more recently by others in large German hospitals, have demonstrated that x-ray equipment will destroy the life-enhancing effects of tht orgone radiation. Additionally, there is a persistence effect. wherein toxic energetic conditions remain for a time after the irritating devices are shut down and removed from a room or building. Orgone accumulators should likewise no be used in the immediate neighborhoods or vicinities where the following facilities are located:
Airport radar systems, cellular telephone or microwave relay towers, very high-tension power lines, AM, FM, or TV broadcast towers, nuclear power plants and storage facilities, or nuclear waste dumps, military installations with nuclear bomb storage, past or present nuclear bomb testing areas

Reich and others associated with him made warning. about these devices in the 1940s and 1960s, but only today do we see epidemiological studies corroborating their lifenegative effects. Part of this problem has hinged upon the difficulty that, by simply demonstrating a correlation between two events, you do not prove causality. One has to show or demonstrate just what the mechanism is, and objectively demonstrate each step between the two correlated events, before cause and effect are proven. This is in most cases a very wise policy, but it is very unevenly applied in the world of the sciences. Orthodox theorems are rarely subjected to valid critical review based upon their failures to meet this strict criteria (eg, "bad genes", invisible viruses, etc.), while unorthodox theories are denied funding or simply thrown out or repressed for whatever weaknesses they may have. Industrial polluters may also raise this issue to avoid taking responsibility for the environmental damage they have done.

Regarding energetic questions, according to the best calculations of the physical scientists, low-level radiation ought not to have a deleterious effect upon the living system. The energy present in the low-level radiation, as detected with conventional radiation detection instruments, is simply not sufficient to do significant damage. And yet, the damage occurs. I emphasize the concern about "conventional radiation detection instruments", because a major fallacy of physics is that if an instrument does not measure an environmental disturbance, then no disturbance has occurred. The error here lies in the false assumption that their energy detection instruments must be detecting 100% of any disturbance. This unprovable assumption is, of course, challenged by biological or epidemiological evidence which demonstrates that an effect does exist. There is furthermore a great distrust of the body in the modern sciences, in that average people who are made sick by our modern energy radiating devices often are not believed, or are viewed suspiciously.

It is precisely here that Reich's findings on the orgone energy provide a clarification, as the life energy (and disturbances within it) cannot be detected with ordinary nuclear or electromagnetic sensing instruments. One has to modify the instrument to pick it up, or use entirely different methods. The orgone is also an interconnecting energy continuum, which provides a connection between the offending facility or appliance (nuclear plant, microwave tower, fluorescent light, TV set) and the living creature that is affected. As the local orgone energy field of the Earth, or the energy field of a home is badly disturbed and agitated by these devices, so too does the orgone energy field of a person in that environment become disturbed.

Modern physics partly acknowledges these connections, in that all nuclear bombs, nuclear reactors, and related facilities are said to radiate of unshieldable, undetectable, theoretical neutrinos in tremendous quantities. These neutrinos race out from the facilities, penetrating all forms of radiation shielding, and impinge upon the bodies of everyone for miles around. Theoretically, they do not do any damage, but this is purely a speculative assumption. The major observed fact is that according to the best theories of classical physics, significant energy is constantly being lost from the heart of the nuclear reactor, through the heavy reactor shielding into the surrounding countryside, that cannot be detected with ordinary radiation detectors. From the perspective of Reich's findings, it appears that this lost energy is not discharged as "particles", but is discharged directly back into the cosmic orgone energy continuum, which becomes greatly agitated and overcharged. Given the ability of the orgone energy to penetrate material substance, this energetic disturbance is quickly propagated outward, through the reactor shielding to affect living creatures and weather in the surrounding area.

Likewise, the dilemma of illness provoked from lowlevel electromagnetism. Such radiation ought not be making people sick, but it does. The theoretical difficulty here is that physics says these electromagnetic waves are transmitted across the countryside and around the globe without any medium of transmission. This position is similar to someone studying and working with sound waves, or water waves, but denying the existence of the air or water. But the nuclear and electromagnetic "particle-waves" need a medium through which they can propagate. The big myth of modern physics is that this medium was never discovered, and this fallacy was discussed in a previous chapter.

Nuclear and electromagnetic devices and facilities do have deleterious effects upon the health of their workers, and of people who live nearby, whether or not one accepts the bioenergetic point of view outlined here. In general, the health hazards are not evenly distributed among a given population. Certain very high energy, or very low energy people, and in general the very young and very old, are more sensitive to these toxic energies, and will react to them more quickly and strongly. A few cases may be given. I met a secretary who was unable to make the transition from typewriter to word-processor computer. Every time she sat in front of the computer, she developed a metallic taste in her mouth, and became nauseous. This effect would last for weeks after a single exposure to the computer. Her boss and friends thought she was crazy, but she was simply more sensitive than they were. In another case I met a fellow who lived one mile from a large radio broadcasting tower, which was irradiating the entire area with a strong dose of electromagnetism at radiowave and microwave frequencies. By the time he realized the danger of his situation, his children had contracted leukemia, and he had to move out of the area. Medical practitioners who are confronted by such symptoms usually do not make a diagnosis based upon the energetic ecology of a patient's home and work environment. In a chapter below, I give a number of practical things people can do to protect themselves, and their accumulators, from these environmental hazards.

Reich's observations on the life-negative aspects of these devices and facilities cannot be explained according to conventional theories of physics and biology, but they have been corroborated to a greater or lesser extent. The various electromagnetic and nuclear devices and materials listed above are known to irritate the orgone energy, driving it into a wild, frenzied state which Reich identified as the oranur effect. Oranur was inadvertently discovered after small amounts of nuclear material were introduced into a strong orgone accumulator. Reich kept several large, 20-ply accumulators inside an even larger room-sized orgone accumulator at his laboratory in rural Maine. When the radioactive material was introduced into this highly- charged environment, the orgone energy field of the entire mountain region of his laboratory was driven into a state of wild agitation, which could be readily felt and seen. Laboratory workers became quite ill, and experimental mice kept in another building died in large numbers.

Reich found that the oranur effect persisted long after the nuclear materials were removed from the laboratory accumulators, making the facilities unusable for several years. Under such persisting oranur agitation, the orgone energy eventually becomes immobilized and "dead". Reich identified this deadened energetic state as dor, which was short for deadly orgone. A room charged with dor will feel unbearably stuffy, and it will be hard to get a good breath out of it. One also feels constantly dehydrated, given the waterhungry nature of dor. Some people react to dor with edema, and a particular extreme form of dor-sickness was identified by Reich and his co-workers. The organism responds with lethargy, immobilization, and emotional contactlessness. These effects are quite tangible, sensible, and measurable.

A great deal was learned about the atmospheric life energy from this experimental accident, and a 1951 work by Reich titled The Oranur Experiment describes the dramatic events. Reich later identified a number of other sources of mild to severe oranur, which could disturb the orgone energy within a home, office, building, neighborhood, or region.

In most people's homes, the most common orgone irritants are the TV set, the microwave oven, and fluorescent lights of any kind (the full-spectrum varieties reduce, but do not eliminate this problem). Fluorescent lights often produce hyperactive plants, with enlarged, oversized leaves, and so fool people into thinking that the lights are "good". Some studies have even shown that depressed people can be agitated to a greater activity or metabolism by exposure to fluorescent lights. Examples are wintertime emotional depression, depressed newborn infants, and even "depressed" office workers, all of whom are agitated to a temporary increase in activity under fluorescent oranur. In many cases, the increased activity was linked to light color or frequency, and this also has its influence. But the problem of fluorescent oranur excitation is usually not addressed as a factor in those studies. Oranur is, however, produced by all types of fluorescent lights, TV sets, and microwave ovens. It can be objectively measured through the disturbed electrical potential of a house plant exposed to such devices, through use of an orgone charged geiger counter, or by making extended measurements of accumulator functions, and observing the perturbation which occurs during oranur and dor conditions.

In any given city neighborhood, radio broadcast towers, airport radars, and microwave telephone communications towers also constitute hazards, and producers of oranur. Like microwave ovens, and TV sets, they are allowed to leak relatively high levels of radiation into their local environments. Infrared automatic door opening sensors, or automatic light switches, also operate closer to the microwave end of the infrared spectrum, as do library or commercial inventory scanners, which are designed to stop petty larceny. These smaller sensors are powerful enough to trigger your automobile police radar detector at several hundred yards, and may pose a danger to workers who sit near to them day after day; the actual risk here is simply unknown. Like microwave ovens and TV sets, they are allowed to expose the "average" person with an "average" dose, which is irrationally assumed to be harmless. Until more is known about them, you should err on the side of caution. Do not site an accumulator near any of these devices.

Nuclear plants likewise are permitted to vent (or rather, dump) significant quantities of measurable radiation into the cooling water and ventilation air that passes through the facilities. Aside from the fact that the local population breathes and often drinks this waste, which can accumulate in the food chain, there is the problem of oranur and dor. Both are created by nuclear plants, and the atmospheric energy in these areas will be affected, with one qualitative state predominating over the other. Sensitive people can literally feel the difference in a region after a nuclear reactor has been operating for a period, and careful observations will sometimes reveal changes in weather patterns.

Underground atomic bomb tests are perhaps the worst offenders, as they badly shock and agitate the orgone energy field of the entire planet. There is some evidence suggesting that severe weather extremes, such as drought or severe storms, plus epidemics of "flu" symptoms, may be triggered by underground atomic bomb tests, through a widespread disturbance of the Earth's energy field. Some evidence, currently under review, has suggested that the entire Earth is disturbed in its rotational dynamics, and the upper atmosphere overheated and perturbed, by underground atomic bomb tests. These kinds of effects make no sense whatsoever from the viewpoint of classical biology and physics, which denies the existence of any vital energy principle, and assumes that space is "empty". From the standpoint of orgone biophysics, these effects do make sense.

Biophysically, the oranur effect can be felt by sensitive individuals as a jumpy, overexcited, possibly heated or slightly feverish feeling. One may feel a constant agitation; some people may mildly contract when it is present, while tempers may flare among others. Severe oranur affects each person at their weakest point, and tends to drive latent medical symptoms to the surface. The palms of the hands may exhibit a mottled characteristic, and sleep may be nearly impossible. There is a tendency towards inability to maintain a coherent focus upon work or other activities. The atmospheric expression of oranur is also one of overcharge. Skies may maintain a strong blue color, but significant haziness will appear on the horizon. Clouds do not coalesce or grow under oranur conditions, partly because the highly charged and agitated atmosphere cannot contract, and the charge within clouds cannot build beyond a certain point. Winds may be chaotic under oranur conditions, as if confused or agitated. Approaching rainstorms usually begin to fragment or dissipate as they approach an oranur-affected region. The atmosphere may have-a "tense" or "strained" quality, reflecting the generally overcharged conditions. Rains will decrease, particularly as oranur is eventually replaced by deadened, immobilized dor conditions.

Dor has an atmospheric expression as well, and when sufficiently widespread, is associated with drought or desert conditions. It appears on the landscape as a steel-grey haze that reduces visibility, gives sunlight a burning or scorching quality, turns rains acidic, or completely blocks the rainfall. Clouds are rendered into a tattered state, similar to slightly dirty, shredded cotton, and never grow beyond a certain small size. Unusual small clouds with a black or dark grey coloration sometimes appear; in contrast to other small clouds in the area, these darkish clouds maintain their dull coloration even when directly illuminated by sunlight. These are what Reich called dor clouds. They often form and reform continually over certain locations on the landscape, as if energetically attached to that spot.

While oranur and dor often exist together within a given region, one expression will generally predominate over the other. Being energetic phenomena, oranur and dor cannot be "blown away" by winds, though a good rainstorm may sequester and clean them out. Under exceptionally strong oranur or dor conditions, rainstorms are blocked and diverted, giving rise to prolonged drought. Desert locations are generally charged with great quantities of dor, particularly on the lower-lying portions of the topography. Regions with multiple nuclear power, refining, and waste storage facilities tend to be very highly charged with both dor and oranur. Sequential episodes of drought often occur in those areas, given that the life energy is rarely in a natural state, and is periodically overexcited, or deadened.

Contrast the above descriptions of oranur or dor conditions with that of the orgone energy in its normally sparkling and pulsing condition. When the orgone continuum maintains a state of healthy and vigorous atmospheric pulsation, regular cycles of rain-dry-rain-dry occur. The atmosphere is clean and transparent, sparkling and crisp, and does not have any notable atmospheric haze. The contrast between clouds and blue sky is apparent all the way down to the horizon. The open sky has a deep blue color, and cloud boundaries are sharp and well-defined. Clouds maintain a rounded shape, like buds of cauliflower, and build vertically without leaning sideways, or collapsing. Distant mountains maintain a bluish or purple coloration. The vegetation is also lush and crisp, full of life. Birds are active and soaring, and other animal life is also active. The sunlight warms, but does not scorch or burn as readily. The general subjective feeling during clear weather conditions is of great expansion, abounding energy, contactfullness, and liveliness. Breathing is so easy that the air literally pushes into your lungs. Most people feel exceptionally alive and alert, and more relaxed than usual. All of life is pushing upwards, against gravity, as an expression of the surging, gently pushing and expansive nature of the life energy. During rainy conditions, one may feel less energetic or sleepy, but still comfortable and at ease. Rains occur with a cyclical regularity.

Most older people are aware that this quality of atmosphere is increasingly rare. It was more commonly observed in the past than today. Hazy, stagnant dorish qualities are fast becoming the "norm", such that many young people, particularly in the big polluted cities, do not know what a really crisp and sparkling day is like. For example, older airline pilots remember when dorish haze was present only over a few industrial areas of the Northeast USA. Today, however, dorish haze can be observed in unbroken fashion, from coast to coast, and also a considerable distance out to sea as well! Likewise, with the continuing rampant deforestation and desertification that is occurring world wide, dorish desert conditions are spreading into regions that were once much more lush and wet. In wetter regions, as the atmosphere becomes dorish, regular rainstorms are replaced by foggy acidic drizzles. Naturalists report that the blue orgone glow over mountains vanishes about two years prior to the onset of massive forest death, a phenomena which is likewise associated with hazy and stagnant air pollution. Indeed, the blue orgone glow of the oceans, rivers, forests, and atmosphere is vanishing at a disturbing pace, foretelling a collapse of entire ecosystems. Just when the life energy has been documented and objectified, it is being polluted out of existence, and killed.

To describe the energetic states of oranur and dor, Reich used the example of a wild animal placed into a cage. At first, the animal reacts with fury, attempting to break free of the constraining enclosure. Later, the animal exhausts itself, and becomes inert and lethargic. This response, observed by zoo keepers around the world, has likewise been corroborated by John Ott in his work Health and Light. Ott demonstrated that laboratory mice exposed to agitating radiation from a TV set would at first become overexcited; later, the same mice would become inert and lethargic, eventually developing degenerative diseases. Ott gave many examples where aggressive behavior among breeding animals, such as mink and aquarium fish, were eliminated by removing oranurproducing fluorescent lights. Similar effects upon schoolchildren, from fluorescent lights in the classroom, are at work. Some school teachers have found that disruptive behavior in the classroom is often easily eliminated by simply turning off the fluorescent lights.

I have observed a similar reaction among children who are allowed to spend enormous amounts of time "watching" TV. During the early phases of a child's TV exposure, there is often little focus upon program content. The kids simply want the TV on, and they will often busy themselves with other things while sitting in front of it. One often sees this strange behavior among entire families, where the evening or weekend family activity revolves around the big color TV. Nobody seems to care what program is on, just so long as the TV is on. Like cocaine-eating laboratory mice, both children and adults may become addicted to the oranur effects of the TV set. Later, like Ott's mice, they may enter an inert, lethargic, or immobilized stage, what is popularly called the couch-potato syndrome, which may be a precursor to degenerative disease. Of course, there is an emotional component at work here, where emotionally contracted adults and children may use the TV as a means of escaping an unhappy social or family situation. But recall Reich's discovery that the orgone is the energy of the emotions. The effect of the TV is more than just a "cognitive" escape, and has distinct bioenergetic effects.

This bioenergetic form of electromagnetic/oranur addiction is most clearly seen when someone tries to turn the TV set off. Agitated or lethargic children, who were bathing themselves in the TV radiation, but paying scant attention to the program, may suddenly object quite vocally when attempts are made to shut it off. Even adults suffering from this syndrome will be discomforted by the thought of shutting the TV off, forcing them, as it would, out of a mildly catatonic state, into more direct emotional (bioenergetic) contact with other human beings. Of course, program content also plays a role, in that the more violent, cruel, and sexually titillating it is, the more it will touch upon the repressed sexual longing and bottled-up anger of people in our society, to further feed the syndrome. Couch potatoes, adults or children, rarely if ever watch the educational channel.

Another response that belongs in this category is the child in a video game parlor who has run out of quarters, or who is ordered to leave. Anguish and even violent outbursts may occur as the child or adult is weaned away. Ott has shown that these devices, TV and fluorescent lights in particular, are often a cause of childhood hyperactivity. Other researchers are today have observed similar behavioral disorders, reinforcing social isolation and emotional contraction among young children who are addicted to their microcomputers. Some of these computer-addicted kids are now getting cataracts, from constant exposure to the computer CRT, and leukemia may likewise be an associated disorder of the technology. The oranur in school computer rooms, and in video game parlors is so intense that it is readily sensible. The TV departments of large stores, which also have many fluorescent lights, also assault the casual passers-by with intense oranur.

I saw one clear case of TV radiation addiction with three hyperactive children who spent hours each day in front of the set, but paid little attention to program content. The minute they came home from school, the set had to be on. When the TV was finally shut down (the frustrated mother had to cut the power cord to defeat the clever kids), there was a wail of agonizing protest, and a period of even more agitated behavior. After about a week, however, the kids calmed down and began to develop new friendships and activities, and the hyperactivity disappeared completely. She got rid of the big color TV, and got a smaller black and white set. Even though the kids were later allowed to watch the black and white set as much as they wanted, they never fell back into the same trap, and the hyperactive syndrome did not occur again. In these cases, the energy system of the human had become addicted to the electromagnetic/oranur agitation, which took a clear and conscious effort to overcome.

When using the orgone accumulator in an oranur or dor environment, all of the above considerations are most important, as the accumulator will amplify whatever kinds of energy conditions are present in the local environment. If oranur or dor is present, an accumulator will amplify those tendencies, imparting a toxic, life-negative quality to its charge. In some cases, the effects of oranur and dor are both persistent and widespread, and cannot be affected by simply changing things in your own home. This is often the case with large polluted cities, and certainly in the regions near to nuclear power facilities. Regarding nuclear power facilities, a distance of around 30 to 50 miles is minimal for safety regarding both the biological effects of emitted low-level radiation, as well as for use of an accumulator. Similarly, if you are within a few miles of very high voltage electrical transmission wires, or large radio broadcasting towers, use of an accumulator is disadvised. Likewise, do not use an accumulator if your area has been recently subjected to a nuclear accident, and fallout is present.

One last set of considerations. Accumulators should never be used inside mobile homes or houses with aluminum skin or side paneling. Aluminum imparts a lifenegative characteristic to the orgone energy, and it is advisable not to live inside such a structure even if an accumulator is not built or stored there. Mobile homes with wooden siding are safer, and no problem inherently exists with them. However, note that some mobile homes and buildings are insulated with fibreglass batting that has an aluminum backing. If this kind of insulation is widely used, it will act very much like aluminum siding, and turn the house into a large, aluminum accumulator. Also, houses with metal roofs, or new homes that use steel wall braces, instead of wooden components, will act somewhat like a large accumulator. I have lived inside such structures for short periods, and even without an accumulator, they tend to develop a very high charge inside. They can disturb a person's sleeping cycle, and lead to an amplification of the oranur effect if fluorescent lights, microwave ovens, or TV sets are used. Newer homes designed for energy efficiency often do not have adequate ventilation, which makes the energetic situations even worse. One does not wish to live inside an accumulator, and most sensitive people will be driven a bit crazy by the overcharge that spontaneously develops within such a structure.

Learn to recognize dor and oranur, such that if the feeling inside a building or accumulator is ever disturbed or uneasy, you can take necessary steps and precautions to eliminate those effects. Air the room out, and check to make sure that TV sets, fluorescent lights or other such apparatus are not in use in nearby rooms or on floors above and below. If an accumulator is already present in such a location, air it out also, and learn the steps for water-cleaning it. Follow the steps and guidelines given in the next chapter for "Cleaning Up Your Energetic Environment". The subjective feeling in an accumulator should be one of warmth, comfort and relaxation. This is where it becomes most important that you learn about your energetic environment, and to get in touch with your own body and organ sensations. It is clear that factors related to "civilized" living often have distinctly negative influences upon both the orgone energy field of the Earth, of our homes, and ourselves. Whatever can disturb or agitate the atmospheric orgone energy field of the Earth, or of your home, will likewise badly affect our own life energy. The next chapter focuses directly on what can be done to mitigate or eliminate these toxic effects.

A) Bioelectric Fields: Reich identified various bioelectrical phenomenon which he felt demonstrated a more powerful energy current at work in the body. The small millivolt currents of "bioelectricity", he argued, were only a small portion of this stronger energy current in the body, which he identified as being both emotional and sexual in nature, and which was later objectively identified as the orgone energy.

B) Radiant Effects from Bion Cultures: Special bion cultures derived from beach sand emitted a powerful radiation which could be felt and seen in darkrooms. This radiation did not register on instruments for detecting nuclear or electromagnetic energies. Additionally, the radiation could fog film, impart a static charge to insulators, and a magnetic charge to steel laboratory implements.

C) Darkroom and Atmospheric Observations, the Orgonoscope: Reich also observed and categorized various observable phenomena which could be seen by the dark adjusted eye in the open air of darkrooms. Scintillating fog-like forms, and dancing, luminescent pin-points of light were observed, and numerous techniques were developed which demonstrated their real, objective nature. One of these techniques involved the development of a new instrument, the orgonoscope, which used hollow tubes, lenses, and a fluorescent screen for magnifying the various subjective light phenomena. Large room-sized orgone accumulators were also constructed, and observations made in these amplified and clarified many of the effects. A special corpuscular orgone unit was identified, whose lawful behavior changed according to cosmic and meteorological factors. These macroscopic particles were also observed in the daytime sky with the unaided eye, as a generally common phenomenon, visible to most people once they were pointed out. The Earth was observed to possess its own orgone energy envelope, or energy field, much as did individual living creatures.

D) X-Ray Photographs: Reich observed that the x-ray "ghost" phenomenon (spontaneous, unexplained fogging of x-ray films) could be explained as an effect of the orgone radiation, or life energy. He published several photos where the ghosts were purposefully created by excitation of orgone energy within the field of the x-ray machine.

E) Visible Light Photographs: Reich observed that his special radiating bion cultures would fog film stored in nearby metal cabinets. Culture dishes of radiating bions set directly upon the film would also render an image of the culture dish and its contents. More recently, Thelma Moss of UCLA has shown that life energy field photos can be made without electrical stimulation (as with Kirlian techniques), by energy field enhancement; living objects placed directly on a film for a few days within a darkened orgone accumulator will, under the proper conditions, render an image.

F) The Orgone Energy Field Meter: Reich developed this device to measure the strength of energy fields. Using a Tesla coil and special accumulator-like metal plates, the device could quantify the differences in energy level between people or objects.

G) The Orgone Energy Pulsation Demonstrator: Reich demonstrated that the energy field pulsations of a large metal sphere were capable of setting into motion a smaller metallic/ organic pendulum suspended nearby.

H) The Accumulator Temperature Differential (To-T): An accumulator will spontaneously develop a slightly higher temperature than either its surroundings or a control enclosure, on those sunny and clear days when the orgone charge at the Earth's surface is strong. The effect vanishes during stormy, rainy weather, when the orgone charge at the Earth's surface is weak (but strong in the Atmosphere). The results of this temperature experiment, which has been replicated many times, demonstrates that the orgone energy functions in opposition to the second law of thermodynamics.

I) The Accumulator Electrostatic Effects: An electroscope kept inside an orgone accumulator will dissipate its charge more slowly than an identical one kept in the open air, or inside of a control enclosure. A partly charged, or uncharged static electroscope which is kept inside an accumulator will sometimes spontaneously charge itself up. As with the temperature differential effect, the electrostatic effects vanished during rainy or overcast weather, when the orgone charge at the Earth's surface is weak.

J) The Accumulator Ionization Suppression / Amplification Effect: Geiger-Muller tubes and counters charged up inside a very strong accumulator for several weeks or months tend to go "dead" for a period, but may eventually yield an erratic count rate for background. Special vacuum tubes, which Reich had constructed and called vacor tubes (which mimic the design of the Geiger-Muller tube but are evacuated well below the level at which ionization could occur), will initially not yield any counts when hooked to a radiation detector. After charging up inside a very strong accumulator for weeks or months, however, these same vacor tubes will begin to yield very high counts per minute for background, even at very low exciting voltages. The results of this experiment run counter to the classical interpretation of the ionization effect inside the GeigerMuller tube, and hence, to the classical particulate interpretation of radioactive decay.

K) The Accumulator Humidity/Water Evaporation Effect (EVo-EV): More recent studies have suggested that an accumulator tends to attract a slightly higher humidity into itself, and suppress the evaporation of water from an open vessel inside. As with other accumulator phenomena, this effect also diminishes or vanishes during rainy weather.

L) Atmospheric Energetic Pulsation. and the Reversed Orgonotic Potential: Based upon observations of the thermal, electroscopical, and ionization characteristics of the orgone accumulator, Reich identified a patterned and lawful energetic cycle at work within the atmosphere and energy field of the Earth. These observations likewise led to the identification of a reversed potential at work in the orgone energy, running counter to thermodynamic principles, which explained why natural orgonotic systems (organisms, weather systems, planets) maintained a higher concentration of energy than their surrounding environments. The stronger of two orgonotic systems will drain energy from the weaker system, and increase its own potential or charge, until the weaker system is drained, or some maximum capacity level is achieved. Discharge may occur thereafter. Under sunny, clear weather, the orgone charge at the Earth's surface is quite strong, and in a state of expansion, preventing any significant growth of clouds. Where overcast or stormy conditions prevail, the orgone charge at the Earth's surface is weak, while the charge in the atmosphere is strong and in a state of general contraction. This loss of charge at the Earth's surface during rainy weather slows down the activity of living creatures, and the accumulator will not function well at those times.

M) The Millivoltmeter: Virtually all objects and organisms within a given environment, to include the air, water, and the Earth itself, have a charge that will increase and decrease in a cyclical or pulsatory manner, timed to cosmic and meteorological factors. In living creatures, high potentials produce more active physical and emotional periods, while low potentials signal less active periods. In Nature, high atmospheric potentials signal cloudy periods with stronger storms, while high Earth potentials signal cloud free conditions. The tiny currents are excellent predictors of powerful biological or environmental processes, but are themselves too slight and weak to be the causative agent. Reich, and other researchers who have examined these small voltage potentials (such as H.S. Burr), viewed them as indicative of a more powerful, ubiquitous natural phenomena which energetically linked together the Sun, Moon, Earth, weather systems, and all living creatures.

N) Plant Growth Enhancement Studies: Seeds and plants correctly charged up inside an accumulator demonstrate higher growth rates and yields of fruit. This is one of the more telling, and widely replicated experiments with the orgone accumulator. In my own trials, I have seen a six-fold increase in the length of mung bean sprouts inside a strong accumulator, as compared to a control group of sprouts. Germination rates, growth rates, budding, flowering and fruiting can be increased by charging seeds or growing plants directly inside the accumulator. The seeds can be sprouted directly inside the accumulator, or charged up for a few hours, days, or weeks prior to planting. Growth enhancement effects may also occur when the water alone is charged, and then externally given to the plants.

O) Non-Human Animal Studies: Controlled studies on the effects of orgone radiation from an accumulator on cancer mice and wounded mice have been performed. These studies generally confirm Reich's earlier arguments that tissues with a stronger energetic charge will heal more quickly, and develop tumors more slowly, or not at all, as compared to energetically weakened tissues. These findings invalidate many aspects of the DNA theory of cellular differentiation, which appears to be more directly under the structuring influence of the organism's own life energy field.

P) Human Studies: Aside from those clinical trials performed by Reich and his co-workers in the 1940s and 1950s, very little work has been done in the USA regarding the bioeffects of the accumulator on humans. All research into these questions was halted by medical police actions in the 1950s. Recent studies from Germany, however, have confirmed such bioeffects. In general, a person sitting inside an accumulator will feel a variety of warm, glowing, or sometimes tingling sensations at the skin surface; their body core temperature will rise and skin flush, while blood pressure and pulse rate will trend towards moderate levels, being neither too high or low. When properly used, it has a distinct vagotonic, enlivening effect. The chapter on "Physiological and Biomedical Effects" will provide details on these questions.

The actual discovery of the orgone energy and accumulator was first announced by Reich in the 1942 issue (Volume 1) of the International Journal of Sex-Economy and Orgone Research, in a section on the "Construction of a Radiating Enclosure". That journal focused also upon the emotional aspects of the cancer biopathy, the relationship of cancer to emotional resignation, sexual starvation, and chronic energy depletion. Reich also published his findings on the spontaneous organization of cancer cells from the patient's own bionously disintegrating tissues. Additional information was later published in the Cancer Biopathy, the Orgone Energy Bulletin, and the Orgonomic Diagnosis of Cancer Biopathy. Reich's findings on cancer were confirmed by others, who likewise published in his journals. But he never saw the accumulator as a simple "cure" for cancer, and explicitly said so on a number of occasions. However, he did lay claim to the following discoveries:

1) Cancer is a systemic disorder, and not just a tumor.
2) The cancer biopathy starts in early life, with a major component related to early childhood trauma, and the consequent respiratory block and suppression of emotions; later in adolescence, and in adulthood, the individual has great difficulty establishing a love life, and eventually resigns from sexual pleasure, and from joy or meaning in life.
3) The cancer patient possesses significant bioenergetic neuromuscular contraction and tension (armoring) that restricts circulation and oxygenation in certain body areas, notably the sexual organs.
4) The cancer patient suffers from a chronic loss, and gradual depletion of bioenergetic charge of body tissues.
5) Shortly before onset of tumor development, the individual experiences a powerful emotional blow, such as loss of a special loved one, which reinforces their emotional resignation.
6) The cancer cell originates from bionous processes, arising from the disintegration of the patients own energetically weakened tissues.
7) A specific t-bacilli is found in copious quantities in the tissues and blood of cancer patients; t-bacilli are culturable, and when inoculated into mice will cause tumors to form.
8) Use of the accumulator could not by itself reverse the deeper biopathic nature of the cancer disease; in a limited way, however, it could stimulate the bioenergy system to expand, recharge the tissues, and even disintegrate tumors.

While this last point may sound like a cure for cancer, Reich was cautious about this, though clearly optimistic. Of the case histories given in his writings, he emphasized the failures over the successes. He was constantly making careful evaluations of the patient's blood, and also developed a new bioenergetic blood test, that allowed even precancerous tendencies to be identified. He also observed that the gentle vagotonic, parasympathetic excitation the accumulator provided would often deepen the respiration of the patient, and help to bring long-buried feeling to the surface. Reich also worked with his patients characterologically, to overcome the emotional and respiratory blocking and sexual stasis associated with the cancer. The highly-charged blood would distribute new life energy from the accumulator throughout the body, into every organ and tissue, as patterns of emotional holding were likewise being relaxed, and the respiration deepened.

It was clear that the accumulator could recharge the organism, and even in a limited way help to overcome many secondary complications of the disorder. People would often regain lost organ functions and an increase in energy, for a few years, or sometimes in association with a complete remission of symptoms. But often, at least in the published accounts, a relapse would occur. In some cases, it was apparent that as the patient's tumors began to disintegrate, they would become debilitated by the toxic break-down products of the tumor, and die of secondary complications, such as kidney or liver failure. This was a particular problem when tumors deep inside the body were being broken down, and easy discharge of toxic tumor debris was not possible.

In some cases when the patient's bioenergy level was being recharged by the accumulator, they began to feel a welling-up of buried feelings, which they often did not want to deal with. In some cases, as they began to recover, they developed pains in the genital area or thighs, related to their sexual stasis. Reich found that almost all of his cancer patients had not had sexual intercourse for years, were trapped in a loveless, compulsive marriage, or were deeply religious. In such cases, overcoming the obstacle of sexual stasis and blocked emotion, and restoring their desire to live, was the key to a remission. In a few cases, as these emotional problems surfaced,.his patients would discontinue further treatment with the accumulator, even though significant tumor reduction and restoration of body function had occurred.

For these reasons, and also to emphasize his interest in cancer prevention, Reich focused upon the central role of emotional and sexual resignation in the life histories of cancer patients. Where this resignation from life and feeling could be overcome, Reich observed that the prognosis was better than where the resignation was left untouched. This factor appears to explain the common observation that cancer patients who become emotionally mobilized, who learn to express their sadness, rage, and terror, and who regain a desire to live, will have a better prognosis.

Given Reich's findings on the emotional component of cancer, the following question has to be asked: What effect upon emotional and sexual resignation occurs when radical cancer surgery deforms or incapacitates the sexual organs, or other body areas? Or similarly, what happens emotionally when the body is so badly assaulted by caustic chemicals and radiation, such that visible, frightening deformity occurs, and normal body functions, such as eating, defecation, or sexual arousal, are no longer possible? Such horrific treatments of degenerative illness surely can only increase emotional resignation and sexual stasis. Having done so, they cannot help but to also increase the rate of degeneration, and likewise increase the rate of relapse and metastases. In this context, it is no wonder that the mutilating surgeries and toxic chemical treatments advocated by cancer specialists today do not have any greater benefit to patients than the treatments of 30 or even 50 years ago!

Of course, the better known unorthodox treatments, which are banned in the USA (but not in Europe, Canada, or Mexico) can do much better than this. They commonly offer the patient natural foods and herbal remedies that energize and detoxify, in a manner similar to the bionous baths and bion packs discussed above. Reich, unfortunately, had his hands full with the discovery of the life energy, and other matters, and spent little time focused upon methods for detoxification. In The Cancer Biopathy, he did demonstrate, with use of a special {luorophotometer, that honey had about eight times the orgone charge of refined sugar, and also that unpasteurized milk carried twice the charge of pasteurized milk. The implication here is that natural foods are highly charged with life energy, as compared with synthetic, devitalized, and refined food products. The treatments developed by Gerson, Hoxey, Livingstone, and others, appear to have independently discovered these kinds of nutritional differences through empirical means, and are clearly more advanced than Reich on the effects of diet and detoxification. (A list of clinics and research centers that specialize in these alternative treatments is given in the "Information" section.) These practitioners likewise employ special herbal or nutritional treatments that appear to have a significant bioenergetic component.

Without detracting anything from these alternative treatment methods, Reich's findings do more clearly provide a scientific basis for the origins of the cancer biopathy and cancer cell. His discussions on the emotional roots of cancer have been independently confirmed, and should assist in providing effective emotional invigoration of cancer patients. Reich's findings are also compatible with the various theorems on the causation of cancer from inadequate nutrition or environmental toxins, through the question of energy level. The measurable energy level of an individual appears functionally identical to the classical concept of immunity, or disease resistance, and is a key to understanding why one person gets sick, while another does not, under similar toxic environmental or dietary influences. Social and emotional factors, as well inherited factors, work a powerful influence upon the energy level, or charge of the tissues. Likewise, the discovery of viraUbacterial pleomorphism (capability of microbes to change form: viruses into bacteria, and vice versa), the independent observations of the tbacilli, and the rediscovery of the bions by various biogenesis researchers, all confirm Reich's positions on the bionous, self-generated nature of the cancer cell. The following fact cannot be emphasized enough: the causation, process of development, and reasonably effective, non-toxic therapies for cancer have existed for over 30 years. The obstacle has not been a failure of science, but of the corrupting influence of politics, and the abuse of the courts and police by the orthodox medical establishment.

In spite of many difficulties, a lot of very clear and positive evidence has been gathered on the effectiveness of the accumulator for treatment of a variety of symptoms and disorders. Very effective pain relief for, and subsequent rapid healing of severe burns has been reported. Likewise, a great reduction in pain was reported when the accumulator was used by cancer patients with tumors, and by persons suffering from arthritis. Besides Reich, other doctors associated with his research effort published case studies on the treatment of cancer with the accumulator. These published accounts demonstrated a significant and promising therapy for the disease. Complete remissions were rare, but people always experienced a reduction in pain and other symptoms, with a lengthening of life by at least several months to years beyond the conventional prognosis. Other medical problems were experimentally approached, such as diabetes, arthritis, tuberculosis, rheumatic fever, anemia, abscesses ulcers, and ichthyosis. In these cases, benefits from orgone radiation and therapy were suggested. Reich also wrote about the promising application of the therapy to leukemia. Additional benefits in the form of an immunity to flu and colds, the elimination of skin problems, and general increased vigor and energy level were also discussed in the pages of his research journals.

To my knowledge, no clinical studies on treatment of human disease with the accumulator have taken place in the USA since Reich's death in prison. Only animals studies have taken place, mainly the effects of the accumulator on cancer mice, and on wound healing in mice. These laboratory trials with mice do confirm the wound-healing and anti-cancer effects of the accumulator. More recent human clinical trials from hospitals in Germany have taken place and prescription of the accumulator is a standard procedure or some German doctors. Several of the German physicians I met told me that the somatic effects of the orgone energy accumulator were more powerful in the treatment of cancer than any other form of conventional or natural therapy they had tried. They reported to me the following effects of the accumulator on cancer patients:

1. Pain was relieved, the appetite was stimulated, and the patients became more alert and active, often leaving the hospital bed, or the hospital itself, to resume activities that interested them.
2. The blood picture cleaned up, with red cells showing a stronger energetic charge, and fewer t-bacilli.
3. Tumors ceased growing, and in some cases, declined dramatically in size.
4. While patients often gave the outward appearance of a "cure", accumulator treatment alone could not touch the emotional aspect of the biopathy, which would continue to deplete the patient in a manner that could not be compensated for. While the accumulator would usually extend the life of the patient by months or even years, the patient would generally experience a relapse at some point, with a sudden recurrence of all symptoms, and a quick, less painful death.
5. The German doctors also stated that many cancer patients were presented to them that did not possess the character traits of the fully-blown cancer biopathy, as described by Reich in the 1940s. In particular, many younger people and children came to them with tumors and a very poor blood picture, and with evidence of a greatly depleted energy level; but they did not have the complete sexual stasis or emotional resignation typical of the disorder among older persons. They attributed this tG the prior exposure of the patient to environmental toxins and pollutants, and the increasingly devitalized nature of co;nmon foods. These observations suggested that, under conditions of environmental and dietary stress, energetically weak individuals are prone to tissue disintegration and tumor formation, while energetically strong individuals are not. In such cases, accumulator treatment gave excellent results, with a much better prognosis for long-term recovery.

Other German scholars have evaluated the somatic effects of the orgone accumulator. One double-blind, controlled study, published as a dissertation through the University of Marburg, is titled the Psycho-Physiological Effects of the Reich Orgone Energy Accumulator. An extended abstract of that important study appears as an Appendix in this Handbook. Based upon these kinds of published findings, we may once again summarize the biological efreets of astrong orgone charge:

A) General vagotonic, expansive effect on the entire system.
B) Sensations of tingling and warmth at skin surface.
C) Increased core and skin temperature, flushing.
D) Moderation of blood pressure and pulse rate.
E) Increased peristalsis, deeper respiration.
F) Increased germination, budding, flowering and fruiting of plants.
G) Increased rates of tissue growth and repair, as determined through animal studies and human clinical trials.
H) Increased field strength, charge, integrity of tissues and immunity.
I) Greater energy level, activity, and liveliness.

Given these facts, it is not surprising that the accumulator might stimulate the recession of any symptom which is related to low energy charge in the blood or tissues, or to chronic overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. However, some medical problems are the result of chronic overcharge, and in those cases, use of an accumulator is disadvised, or advised only with caution, as previously mentioned. Again, Reich warned persons with a history of hypertension, decompensated heart diseases, brain tumors, arteriosclerosis, glaucoma, epilepsy, heavy obesity, apoplexia, skin inflammations or conjunctivitis not to use the accumulator, or to do so only with great caution and for shorter periods, due to the dangers of overcharge in those cases. Not all people suffer from a lack of energy, or even from "low energy". Quite often, people suffer more from a clamping down, or holding back of the emotional energy which they already have. In some cases, additional energy from an accumulator may simply give a person more energy to clamp down with. One should recognize this fact, and understand that regular accumulator use is not mandated for everyone, nor is it a panacea.

The energetic absorbing or drawing effect of water can be changed in character, into a combined drawing and energizing effect, through use of dissolved crystals, such as epsom salts, which increase the energy potential of the water, thereby making it a more powerful attractor and mobilizer of our own biological energy. A similar energizing and drawing effect can be brought about by soaking in a tub of water which contains 1 pound each of sea salt and baking soda. Salt and soda baths, lasting around 20 minutes, can be used to reduce tension and overcharge, or to drain off a toxic charge of energy.

The mineral baths at various natural springs where the water has observed healing properties appears to be based upon similar principles. Many resorts and health spas are built at locations where hot springs, or other waters or earth materials (muds, clays, ash) of an unusual nature exist. It is common for people to soak in these mineral waters, or in special mud or ash baths, after which they feel greatly relaxed, uncommonly energized, or even healed of chronic ailments. Medical symptoms may be relieved, temporarily at least, by partaking of these soaking baths. This tradition of the healing waters is more popular in Europe, given the hostility in the USA to noninvasive, natural kinds of treatment. The threat of criminal prosecution and jail often prevents clinics and health spas built on such mineral springs from openly competing with the hospitals.

Reich's work provides a basic explanation for these effects of natural waters and earth baths. Reich discovered the orgone energy, or life energy, during experiments which demonstrated that microscopic, energy radiating vesicles could be derived from the disintegration of various organic and inorganic materials. Clay, soil, ground rock, beach sand, and iron filings were among the inorganic materials that, when allowed to disintegrate and swell in water or sterile nutrient broth solutions, would form the small radiating vesicles, which he later called bions. Certain sands from Scandinavian beaches were found to form bions of an exceptionally strong, bluish, radiating character. The blue bions from these preparations developed energy fields that could irradiate people and objects, and for a period, Reich experimentally used the energetic bion solutions for the treatment of various disease symptoms. Bion solutions were injected into experimental animals, where they had an immobilizing influence upon pathogenic bacteria and cancer cells. Later, poultices made from bions, or special bion packs, were made by which the energy directly liberated from the disintegrating substance could be used to irradiate the body. After the discovery of the orgone energy accumulator, which developed its charge directly from the atmosphere, Reich ceased experimental development of bion packs for such purposes. In later years, however, with the energetic and chemical poisoning of the atmosphere, and the consequent problem of contamination of the accumulator, interest in bion packs has been rekindled.

The following simple recipe for the bion pack was developed from a variety of sources. A bion pack can be made from clean beach sand or other earthen or clay materials known to have healing properties. A large handful of the earthen material is wrapped in a thick sock, or other heavy fabric container, like a sausage, about one foot in length and 1/2 foot in width. It should be tied or sewn shut so that the material cannot spill out. The bion pack is subsequently saturated and boiled in water, or in a pressure cooker, for about 15 minutes. After this, it is wrapped in wax paper or plastic and allowed to freeze solid, in the freezer. For the first use of the bion pack, the boiling and freezing process should be alternated several times. It should not be cooked in a microwave oven. The bion pack is used after one of the boilings, being allow to cool, with excess water drained off. The pack is then applied to the body, with additional cloth insulation in case it is too hot. As the beach sand disintegrates from the cooking and freezing, radiating microscopic blue bions will form. The radiation from such a bion pack should continue even after the pack has cooled off, and it can be rejuvenated after drying out by repeating the boiling. Orgone radiation can be obtained from this natural source, even in very dorish, polluted atmospheres, when use of an orgone blanket or accumulator would be disadvised. The effect was discovered by Reich early in his research, and both the existence and behavior of the bions has been confirmed by other scientists.

Before the modern era of drugs, health professionals used special kinds of warming, radiant clay or sand packs, or plasters, which were used to relieve aches and pains, or for healing wounds or infections. Many of these poultices or plasters were learned from native healers, who knew which muds or plants gave the best effects. The author does not know if these kinds of packs or poultices are still commercially available. There are many plastic or rubber "plasters" and "warmth packs" available from drug stores, but these are based solely upon thermal phenomena. However, the various health spas and mineral spring resorts, where people soak in special muds, clays, or ash baths, are using the principles of life energy radiation, liberated from those natural Earth substances through the principles of bionous disintegration. The people running such spas would know where to find the best materials for your bion pack. A similar bionous process may also be at work regarding the use of rock dust fertilizers, for reinvigoration of dying forests, and in the "mud facials" or "clay masques" applied to refresh the face, and tighten the sagging skin.

Another way to clean up the energetic atmosphere within a home or apartment is the use of draw tubes or draw buckets. Like the accumulator, these devices are very simple, passive instruments that function by virtue of basic energetic principles. Draw tubes are hollow metal tubes, made from 3/4" or 1" galvanized steel electrical conduit pipe, cut to around 2' lengths. The draw bucket is simply a plastic or metal pail, placed on a drain board, into which water is allowed to slowly circulate and overflow. The draw tubes are halfway inserted into the draw bucket, and are allowed to point off into various parts of the room or apartment which needs energetic cleansing.

As the water slowly circulates in the bucket, toxic forms of orgone energy are drained out of the room, and possibly from adjacent rooms as well. Dor tends to be exceptionally water-hungry, and will be removed from the room, assuming that additional quantities are not being created. Oranur will also be lessened, as the draw tubes and bucket gradually lower the energy level in the room, reducing agitation and overcharge. After the draw system has been in place and operating for awhile, you can hold your hand in front of the tubes and sometimes feel a slight tingling or a "cool breeze" phenomenon. It is recommended that the tubes be positioned away from where people are resting or sleeping; they should likewise not be pointed to any part of the body longer than a few seconds. They can be set up for constant use in an office or working environment, to reduce oranur overcharge and agitation. On several occasions, I have seen such a system in use to lessen oranur in rooms with operating computer systems. In these cases, where a sink or drain is not near the areas to be treated, several lengths of hollow, flexible steel greenfield or BX cable can be used to extend the drawing effect from a sink or bathtub full of water into adjacent rooms. Point the open ends of the greenfield cable to the areas you want to clean. This kind of cable is used for electrical wiring, and can be purchased at most large hardware or electrical supply stores. Do not use aluminum greenfield cable, and do not run any wires inside it.

It is essential that the grounding water be clean, unpolluted, and circulating or moving. It must be constantly refreshed, even if only by a trickle of fresh water. A bucket sink, or bathtub can be used. The tubes should be made of galvanized steel or stainless steel, though the former is cheaper and easier to cut. Silver is also very good, but quite expensive. The tubes must be hollow, without dust or dirt on the interior. One end of each tube must be completely immersed into the water, and a number of tubes should be used. They may have a plastic coating on the outside.

The principles of the draw tube and bucket are based upon Reich's findings that water has the capacity to strongly attract and absorb orgone energy, and that hollow metal tubes has the capacity to focus or extend the drawing influence of the water some distance outward. At one point in his research, Reich developed a device called the medical dor-buster, which was used experimentally on patients, to remove overcharge and dor from the body. Larger devices called cloudbusters, based upon this same principle, were later used to remove accumulations of dor and oranur from the atmosphere, to restore atmospheric sparkle and rainfall during oppressive, drought conditions. Both of these devices pose considerable hazards and health risks for people who would experiment with them, and consequently they not discussed here. However, a good deal of research has gone into studying these devices. The author, for example, has engaged in research with the cloudbuster for more than a decade and has used the apparatus to terminate a number of severe droughts; other experiments have demonstrated a clear ability to increase clouds and rain in deserts. The cloudbuster constitute as great of a breakthrough in the environmental sciences as does the accumulator for the health sciences. Space does not permit a discussion here of this remarkable technology, but the interested reader can obtain more information by contacting the author through the Orgone Biophysical Research Laboratory, listed in the Information section.

When draw tubes ant buckets are allowed to work in a room for several hours or days, the room gains a softer feeling and sweeter smelling condition; stuffy or oppressive conditions generally varnish. The metal tubes amplify the natural drawing effects of the water, grounding out stale and toxic forms of the orgone energy, changing it from a life-negative to life-positive character.

Observations by Ordinary People, versus Scientific Theory

Classical physics says aurora phenomenon originate at heights from 60 to 400 km, and don't go lower than this because the atmosphere is too dense to allow for ionization. Aurora, from this perspective, requires a partial vacuum containing only rarified, ionizable gases which are excited by the solar wind, causing the air to glow. The different colors of the aurora are thereby described as a function of the kind of gas predominating (nitrogen, helium, hydrogen, etc.) at a given high altitude. The living and organic quality of aurora movements are basically ignored from this perspective, which assumes empty space and a dead universe.

An atmosphere similar to what exists within the troposphere (where clouds and weather exist) or even in the lower stratosphere is simply to weak of a vacuum, and too filled with ordinary atmospheric gasses to allow ionization to occur. Therefore, orthodox science claims all observations of aurora at lower levels are but optical illusions, or otherwise faulty. And from this, there is dismissive treatment of the many credible reports of audible sounds from the aurora, especially those reports which claim the coordinated movement of aurora with audible sounds. These are "impossible" according to most classical theorists, given the problems with the slow speed of sound through the atmosphere.

Classical aurora theory demands that aurora phenomenon occur only at altitudes many times higher up than even a high-flying jet aircraft. We know the roar of multiple jet engines from a passing high-altitude jet will arrive at the earth's surface only many tens of seconds after the jet has passed overhead, the sound propagating downward at a speed of approximately 1000 km per hour, depending upon atmospheric density. If auroral sounds were really transmitted from 100 km altitude, it would require at least six minutes for the sound to propagate downward, and this would only be possible if the aurora were exceedingly loud (louder than a jet aircraft), and in any case, most all of the audible frequencies would be dissipated long before they arrived. And, there could be no possibility of coordinated observations of auroral movement and auroral sounds.

Some efforts are being made to explain (and in some cases, to "explain away") aurora sounds as due to some kind of electrical or electromagnetic phenomenon, which people pick up in their skull bones, or in the metal fillings in their teeth, or in their eye-glass frames. This approach has not been too successful in convincing anyone, especially the people who report the audible hearing of aurora, and doubly-so for those who have observed the aurora moving "at tree-top level". The phenomena of audible auroras is a rare phenomenon, so if it were merely caused by electrical or electromagnetic transmissions from a high altitude, one would expect a lot more people to report hearing them -- but that's not the case. Audible tree-top auroras are something a person living in Alaska or Canada might witness only several times over a decade or even a lifetime, and this problem confounds the efforts of those who would forever banish the auroras to the edge of space.

The observations audible tree-top aurora, correlated with its very organic, life-like movements are highly suggestive of basic life-energetic processes as originally described by Wilhelm Reich in the 1950s (ref: Cosmic Superimposition). Such movement and activity of the aurora seem to excite ordinary people much moreso than today's crop of "unnatural" scientists, who spend more time in front of computer screens pouring over their data, than outdoors, directly observing living nature, from which their data are but only a tiny slice of reality. From this perspective, the glowing streaming currents of the aurora can be considered a primary expression of the Earth's life-energy system, in a manner analogous to the life energy which flows through the human body along acupuncture meridians, and forms an energy field which can be measured and even photographed through various methods.

There are other phenomenon which could be classified in a similar manner, notably anomalous lights which occur shortly before, during and after large earthquakes, and anomalous bluish glows observed in forested regions in daytime. There also are experiments from the work of Reich, where vacuum tubes containing almost no ionizable gasses, being evacuated well below the level necessary for ionization, will show aurora-like soft blue coloration after being charged up inside his orgone energy accumulators. We have several of these tubes at our laboratory in rural Oregon, and they emit a soft blue-grey glow simply after being stroked with the hand, without electrical excitation. Most all of these kinds of observable phenomenon have been routinely dismissed by all but a handful of scientific people, but they have been observed for generations by ordinary people. We will try to post several photos of these other phenomenon to this web page in the near future.

In a way, the "theoretical necessity" to reject audible auroras moving at close to the ground level parallels the prior rejection of meteorites by the scientific community, which steadfastly refused to believe that rocks could fall from the sky. The rocks fell, however, and the aurora does occasionally come down to the trees, even if only on rare occasions, and then apparently only for those whom the life-force chooses. Some specific examples are given below.

Scientist observes and describes loud, ground-level aurora:
"In March 1897, I was making a trip over the portage from Behring Sea to Anvik, on the Yukon River. By getting an early start on the last day we could reach Anvik before dark, so we got on the way about three o'clock in the morning. We noticed an arc form of auroral glow on the northern horizon, which seemed very quiet. Before long the shafts of color began to shoot from it toward the zenith, and in a few minutes the entire heavens were aglow with soft, golden, iridescent lights, so bright that they cast a deep shadow under the dogs and sled as we traveled along. The stratum of rarefied atmosphere producing this display, evidently was very low, for it settled down over us until the natural horizon was obscured; in fact it created its own horizon. The activities appeared to be just above the tree-tops. The intermingling and rapid shifting of the golden waves and shafts were easily distinguished. The crackling, swishing sound of the sparks seemed to be immediately around us, which was very distinct and so all-pervading as to have no location of direction. The intensity of the display lasted for about half an hour, and then gradually faded away into higher altitudes. This was the most unusual display witnessed during several years of northern experience.
These low displays and crackling sound of the Aurora are questioned by the advocates of most all theories, as these features cannot be reconciled with them. However, they are absolute facts as could be evidence by every person who has spent a winter in the north."

It is obvious that certain auroral sounds stimulate physiological responses which will never register in biologically unmodified electronic systems. Though debates continue when referring to higher auroral tones, the "thunder" of the aurora stimulates aerial infrasounds which can be measured.
Low level auroras have been actually seen and felt. The sounds and odors associated with this rare phenomenon are unmistakable. In one instance a chemist was fortunate enough to have lived, after witnessing the effect of auroral grounding throughout his laboratory. The incredible luminescence produced in several platinocyanides, electro-phosphorescent chemicals, were duly noted and reported. Another such incident involved the grounding of the aurora into an elevated radio tower. The radio engineer suddenly heard a crackling sound "from everywhere", was unable to transmit any signal power, felt completely electrified, smelled ozone everywhere, and heard the "crackling" sound. Numerous witnesses who saw the event, describing the colored column of light which suffused the tower, feared he might have been killed by its power.
The auroral high pitched sizzling sounds are augmented by deep and ominous thrumming. These deep tones sweep through the bodies of listeners who are fortunate enough to survive the dangerous encounter. These permeations produce an irritability and a dizzying nausea. These sounds were always equated with evil by the Eskimo. Their legends of the aurora are always fear-filled. The trademark of anxiety and dread highly characteristic of infrasonic influence, their tales also recount the "taking" of souls by the "ground walking" aurora. English observers reported that the aurora actually "swept along the ground" like a column descending from the sky. It took a multicolored appearance all along its meandering path. ..."

"...But the most singular phenomenon was the lights. The house is somewhat on the slopes of Mount Hollywood. (The one with the Sign.) To the south one could see a lot of LA bathed in large, spreading patches of softly throbbing lights. They were diffuse and a sick green in color. They looked a lot like ground level Aurora Borealis. Which, I conclude, Is pretty close to what they must have been.
At first I thought they might be coming from downed power lines and exploding transformers, but there was no arc flash. They had the same soft and decay that I've observed in the Northern Lights which can be seen in the high mountains of Wyoming quite frequently in the fall and spring.
My best guess is that there is some kind of piezoelectric energy release which causes phosphorescence in the atmosphere's own natural neon. But why have I never heard of this effect before? (It wasn't just my hallucination either. I have since talked to a number of people who saw them, though there was no mention made of them by any of the media.)
The quake went on for an amazingly long time...about 45 seconds...but I never felt motivated to grab my kids and make a run for the lawn. Nor did it ever get strong enough to wake them back up. If I was frightened it was more on account of the of the lights, which really did have some ominous End of the World quality to them. LA in the Latter Days. ..."

Global Atmospheric-Geophysical Effects from the
India-Pakistan Nuclear Bomb Tests
May 11-13 and May 29, 1998

Two Months After -- A Preliminary Report

Over 50 years ago, Wilhelm Reich observed unusual long-distance effects from above-ground nuclear tests. Dr. Reich's observations were based upon his discovery of a unique life-energetic force in the atmosphere (the orgone energy) which underlay nuclear, meteorological and biological phenomenon , much in the manner of the older physical concept of "aether" and "vital force" combined, but also with meteorolgical properties. With a nuclear bomb test, the orgone energy became highly agitated and irritated, much in the manner of irritated protoplasm, but on a much larger planetary scale -- literally, his ideas suggest the concept of the "living earth" is more than metaphor, and that the Earth's life-energy field could be highly disturbed. Reich called this disturbed/iritated phenomenon the "Oranur Effect".

In more recent years, observations on Oranur were corroborated by followers of Reich's approach (Jerome Eden, Richard Blasband, James DeMeo, Stephen Nagy) as also occurring after underground nuclear tests, and following nuclear power plant accidents. The nuclear tests or accidents create a tremendous Oranur disturbance in the energetic substrate which permeates the earth, atmosphere, and living creature; observed effects included heat waves, increased high pressure, and social/human reactions often expressed as riots or social disturbances which burst forth on the social scene in a disproportionate manner -- the human emotive-thinking process appears affected, just as is the atmospheric pressure and clouds. A patterned "downwind" hemispherical response was discovered, wherein nuclear bomb tests or accidents in Asia would be followed by heat waves in the USA within about two to three weeks. In some cases, the transition of anomalous stagnant air masses moving across the Pacific Ocean could be followed on satellite images (as an expanding cloud-free area) after the Asian bomb tests. Nuclear tests in Nevada, USA produced more immediate local results.

Other scientists who had no knowledge of Reich's earlier observations, such as Gary Whiteford, Yoshio Kato and Mitzuru Katagiri, independently observed similar anomalous long-distance effects following underground nuclear tests and/or nuclear power plant accidents. These effects included anomalous changes in global earthquake patterns, changes in upper atmospheric temperature, and anomalous perturbances in the Earth's polar motion.

All of the above individuals, with one exception, hold advanced degrees in physical or social/health sciences, and many were employed at universities. They have presented their observations in papers to various scholarly scientific societies, published in a few non-mainstream science journals, but they have been mostly ignored by the power-brokers of modern Big Science. Contemporary physics denies the possibility of such long-distance effects, as it continues to rely upon disproven and outdated assumptions of "empty space", with dismissive ignoring of data on the existence of life-energetic phenomena (such as the human energy field) or related concepts in geophysics (such as the Earth's energy field, which is similar in some respects to geomagnetism).

Most environmental groups, having fought for years to gain a foothold in the halls of academic and political power, likewise refuse to consider the reality of these long-distance anomalous effects from nuclear bomb tests and power plant accidents. Nevertheless, the effects appear real, and sufficiently documented to satisfy all but the most intractable critic that there is something going on that deserves a public airing of the issue, and further investigation. Here is a chronology of recent events following the unprecedented testing of ten nuclear bombs by India and Pakistan all within a few days time, and in the same geographical region, with a spreading eastward of the disturbance over ensuing weeks.

11-13 May: India tests five (5) nuclear bomb tests underground at its test site near the Pakistan border. The explosions measured up to 5.6 Magnitude on the world's seismological network. Yields were said to be around 10 KT.

22 May: Killer heat wave hits India and Pakistan, with temperatures up to 120 F, and 34 dead as of this date. "the lingering early-season heat wave is unusually severe". The heat wave occurred so quickly after the nuclear tests, and ordinary citizens in the region were asking questions about the relationship between the two events so frequently, such that the Indian Meteorological officials made a public statement denying any relationship.

27 May: China reports massive flooding. 128 dead (The floods in China appear related to a high-pressure blockage over India of Easterly winds, which were forced northward to dump their moisture along the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau.)

28 May: Pakistan tests five (5) nuclear bomb tests underground at its test site near the Indian border. The explosions measured up to 4.6 Magnitude.

29 May: "366 Dead in India Heat Wave" Temperatures up to 122 F. "Most devastating heat wave in years"

30 May: Killer earthquake in Afghanistan. 2,500 dead, 6.9 Magnitude.

1 June: Another 100 dead in India Heat Wave.

5 June: Heat wave in India/Pakistan death toll up to 1,359 persons.

5 June: Swarms of tornadoes across the USA. Spencer, South Dakota is wiped off the map. Also in Michigan, Tennessee, Pensylvania and New York -- regions where tornadoes are highly unusual.

12 June: Heat wave in India/Pakistan death toll now at 2,500 persons.

12-19 June: China reports flooding, 100,000 persons evacuated, 40 deaths.

19 June: "Weather block" reported across USA, in place for several weeks (back dates approximately to the time of the Pakistani tests). Florida going bone-dry. Considered to be the by-product of "heat from the expired El Nino" (If El Nino has "expired" then from where does the heat come? This statement is highly over-reaching, searching for an answer, but falls short due to lack of adequate mechanism.)

3 July: Wildfires across Florida. Tens of thousands evacuated. Heat wave and smokes from Mexico to Texas to Florida.

3 July: Severe monsoon storms wreak havoc in Sri Lanka. 60 mph winds. Nature is pushing agains the blockage.

9 July: Subtle shift in tropical weather globally: Fires weaken in Florida, rains developing in drought areas of Africa, India, etc.

18 July: Heat wave now moving north, spreading into Midwest and West USA.

In addition to the above, civil riots also errupted in parts of India and Indonesia following the nuclear tests, and a wholely unanticipated border war errupted between Eritrea and Ethiopia (whose leaders are former allies).

Based upon the above, it would appear the global effects from the ten India/Pakistan atomic bomb tests of May 1998 included:
* Over 5,500 persons dead from earthquake, heat wave, and flood.
* Approximately 200,000 persons forced to evacuate homes in China and Florida, to escape the effects of flooding and wildfire, respectively.
* Financial costs are unknown, but surely must be over 1 Billion US dollars.
* The final chapter has not yet been written: heat wave conditions which started after the nuclear tests may persist in the USA and elsewhere.

It is difficult to say whether the spreading north of the oranur heat wave conditions into the Midwestern USA will be only temporary. It is possible the oranur effect which firstly irrupted in India/Pakistan attendant to the nuclear tests, which later spread regionally and eventually east across the Indian and Pacific Oceans into North America (primarily into Mexico and the southern USA states) is now moving again. If so, the East Coast should be affected soon, followed by Europe as it continues eastward.

But sometimes the rains do not come. 1998...was not a good year. In June, the hottest month of the year, the mercury climbed to more than 50 deg. C., a phenomenon the Sindhis attributed to the atomic bomb explosions in the desert of nearby Baluchistan."

Drought has continued since May 1998 into December 2000 at least, creating a massive environmental and social crisis across the Rajasthan region. Crops have withered while grasses have been eated up by surviving wildlife and domesticated animals, whose numbers have in any case been decimated. Entire villages are migrating away from the region, their wells and streams having dried up.

" SATTA RAM, 35, SIYONGION KI DHANI VILLAGE, BARMER: Forced to move out of his house, he shifted to a make-shift cattle camp 5 km away. Once he feeds the four cows that are still alive, he has to travel another 10 km in search of water. Twice a day, he sits on his camel and returns with 10 buckets of water on each trip. This keeps him, his mother, pregnant wife and four children alive. The stubble on his face shows he hasn't had a bath in weeks. "

" SARPANCH UMED SINGH, 51, ARABA VILLAGE, BARMER: Farmers from his village have been forced to become daily-wage earners and they reach the pond site at seven in the morning to eke out a living. Only 69 of the village's total population of 6,000 have been employed for relief work but have not been paid even after three weeks of gruelling work. Umed Singh is worried for he has heard reports of relief workers being paid only Rs 8 and Rs 10 instead of the Rs 60 fixed by the Government. "

Farmers are reduced to daily-wage earners at relief camps. Cattle are left to die because there is no fodder. And the administration fears that water riots may break out.

He doesn't know what tomorrow holds for him but today he has to deal with the business of life. And death. Till a few weeks ago, Satta Ram had 70 sheep, 50 goats and 10 cows. At last count -- it changes every day when the sun beats down relentlessly on the desert sands -- 60 of the 70 sheep were dead and only 20 goats still alive. Six cattle carcasses had been tied to a tractor and dragged away.

Till last year, he was the proud owner of 25 bighas of land that sprouted bajra and mustard. This year, the only thing that has grown is despair. The food storage containers are empty and for the first time in his 35 years, Satta Ram has had to go out to buy bajra. There is no land to till, no milk to sell and no ghee to process. Life is as harsh and brittle as his piece of land, hope as dry as the village well.

For people in Rajasthan, the sun rises as a grim reminder of the devastating drought and sets only after it has added to the toll. Yesterday, Satta Ram mourned the death of his cows. Today, Pura Ram has bid farewell to yet another sheep. Once, he was the proud owner of 100. Yesterday, only 30 were alive and today eight more have gone. Yesterday, he was still putting up a battle to survive. Today, his shoulders have drooped.

Each of the affected villages has a story to tell but in this state, misery is measured through statistics, not human suffering. That Tonk and Ajmer have come close to resembling the deserts in Barmer and Jaisalmer seems to be of little consequence to the administration. It is difficult to find officials out in the villages where the sun burns the skin. The women have no choice but to scrounge for water. Where, if some of them are lucky, they can wash a few clothes and use the same water to have a bath.

Udaipur, a city dotted with lakes, is facing a drought of this intensity for the first time. At places, the situation is so pathetic that man and beast drink from the same pond. The city administration fears that very soon water riots may break out in Udaipur.

In other parts of the state, people are shifting to areas where food and water are still available, although at a price. Some like Saga Ram of Dhava village in Jodhpur district are merely shifting their business. Saga Ram used to sell earthen pitchers in the village. But who would buy pitchers if there is no water to fill them with? Also, most of the villagers have already migrated from Dhava, leaving behind a ghost village. So Saga Ram is taking his wares to sell in neighbouring states.

For the Government it is a case of cold statistics: 26 of the 32 districts are in the grip of a drought; 78.18 lakh hectares of cultivable land is as hard as stone and 34.56 crore cattle are under threat. We know there is hardship and we are working on a war footing, the Government says, reeling off some more statistics: 72 lakh quintals of fodder has been distributed; 1,865 fodder depots and 64 cattle camps sanctioned, 17,945 labourers employed for relief work and 100 water tankers commissioned. "It is easy to blame the state Government but what can we do if the Centre does not give us money and if the rain is scarce?'' asks Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, adding, "Grain is rotting in Food Corporation of India depots but Delhi prefers to let the rats feed on them rather than give it to us.''

For the state, where hope is as scarce as the rain, the drought has exacted a great personal cost. Baisran Ram, a middle-level farmer quite content with 50 bighas of land and 50 cows, has now been reduced to working in a cattle camp for a measly Rs 1,500 per month while his wife Gauri struggles as a daily-wage earner. His brother has been forced to move to Haryana with the 50 cows. Their land, which produced enough bajra for all of them hasn't produced a single blade of grass for two consecutive years. Ram has now stopped going to the fields. That he is keeping 770 cows alive in this camp -- set up a month ago -- is the only solace that balms his pain.

Most have had to do the same; swallow their pride since there is little else in the state where life has become a battle against a thirsty death. Where falling groundwater levels due to scanty rains has dried their fields and their wells. Where the kharif has failed for a third consecutive year and where in the vicious wheel of survival it's a cruel question of man or beast.

So, hundreds of cattle are anointed and left to die. "I don't have enough water and food for my children," is Siya Ram's simple reply. In the fight for survival, abandoning all six cows was his only option and he has little time for guilt. Three successive dry years -- each worse than the other -- have hit his purchasing power. For someone who has never been to the market to shop for bajra, he now has to pay Rs 850 for a quintal. Once, his own field generated at least 60 quintals. Then again, once, he never had to pay for water. Now he has to spend Rs 600 to hire a tanker that will deliver water which he now has to store. Siya Ram will feel the pinch of this unforeseen expense for a long long time. For he has to pay a monthly interest of Rs 12 on every Rs 600 that he borrows to buy the water for his family.

It's the same story for other families. Each more heart wrenching than the other. If one is lucky to have reached his cattle to a camp in time, it is only one hurdle crossed. There is food and water to think about. Life has become one long obstacle race as Thigga Ram soon realised. He thought he was lucky when he was hired as a daily wage earner. At least that would ensure him Rs 60 a day. So he got to the pond site at his village Kalodi in Barmer by 7 a.m. and dug till he thought he would collapse. But when it was time for his weekly payment, he was given only Rs 11 per day and there was little point in arguing, for in relief related work payments are measured on a scale. Thigga Ram was one of three labourers who would have got Rs 60 per day only if they dug the prescribed target of 12 ft by 12 ft. He insists they did but somewhere between the junior engineers, officials of the relief department and the panchayat samiti, his wages were cleared for only Rs 11.

Where survival is measured on death's scale, it doesn't matter that his name is Thigga Ram.

ORISSA: Sizzler of a State

Sachets of water cost Rs 3 each, taps in swanky hotels run dry, trees are seared-there's just no respite

Luck seems to have forsaken Orissa. Six months ago it was the cyclone. Now the spectre of a drought looms large. Much of Orissa -- particularly the western districts of Kalahandi, Koraput and Bolangir -- is parched and there is no respite for its people.

Take the inhabitants of Titlagarh in rocky Bolangir district. The mercury is 46 degrees Celsius and climbing, and there's no sign of rain clouds. Taps, tanks and wells -- everything is bone-dry and Titlagarh has earned itself a new name Tatalagarh -- tatala meaning "sizzling hot" in Oriya. There is no escape for its people, like thousands of others in Orissa similarly trapped, even in coastal districts like Cuttack, Jagatsinghpura and Kendrapara. At Berhampur, people buy locally made sachets of water for Rs 3. The Ret, Udanti and Sandol rivers have almost dried up. Despite being a littoral state, Orissa just does not have water.

The ride to Bolangir town, the district headquarters, is a bumpy one through barren fields dotted with shrivelled trees, past gaunt villagers clutching pots and lining the horizon in search of water. "The only work is going out to find drinking water," explained Snehlata Behera, a villager in Loisingha block. At Sargad village in the interior of Bolangir, the only source of water is a pit of greenish water. "We use it for drinking, bathing and washing," says Gopobandhu Behera. The taps at air-conditioned hotels in Bolangir are hot and dry.

"Politicians are more to blame than nature," says Balgopal Mishra, the MLA from Bolangir. An accusation echoing through the state. The crisis has made the state Government sit up. But perhaps Orissa depends only on natural deliverance -- the monsoons in June.

Postscript, December 2000: Unfortunately, the Monsoon Rains of June-July 2000 were minimal in the affected regions of Rajasthan and Orissa. The crisis continues to worsen. Reich Cloudbuster at work in Namibia, Africa, 1993.

The first systematic study of the cloudbuster a large passive antenna, similar to the lightning rod, but which is grounded into living water ("highly structured" or "activated" water) was undertaken by myself in late 1970s field trials at the University of Kansas. The work included 12 tests for increasing clouds and rain during normal, non-drought conditions, 3 tests for decreasing clouds and rain during episodes of heavy rains, and controlled photographic analysis of the effects of the apparatus on fair-weather cumulus clouds. The tests to decrease rain produced no apparent result, but the other two tests did, and my Thesis on the subject was accepted.(1) The study area for that work was the entire state of Kansas, which approximates the anticipated range of influence of the apparatus.

Subsequent individual field trials were undertaken by myself during mild to severe droughts in Florida,(2) Illinois,(2) Georgia/S.Carolina,(3) Arizona,(4) Washington State (4) and California (5) Results were very positive, with a restoration of natural rainfall episodes generally within 48 hours after operations commenced. Cloudbusting experiments have also proceeded in arid and semi-arid lands, in the Southwestern USA (6), Greece,(7) Cyprus,(7) Israel,(8) Namibia (9) and Eritrea (10). These latter cases often constituted more definitive case studies, given the drier desert conditions under which the apparatus was tested. Nevertheless, the results were also positive in these cases, sometimes far beyond our expectations, with the termination of drought conditions and development of significant rains over adjacent desert areas.

Not all of these field operations have been subjected to a complete data analysis, but most have, using weather data from the National Weather Service or other official sources. In particular, I point to my 1989 study undertaken in Arizona, where five operations were made with the cloudbuster on pre-announced dates. An observed average-doubling of rainfall occurred for a full one-week period after operations commenced.(6) Results of approximately 80% of my experimental field operations have been positive, with published field reports in non-mainstream but peer-reviewed journals, and regular abstracted paper presentations to various scholarly societies (Association for Arid Lands Studies, Association of American Geographers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, International Society for Biometeorology, American College of Orgonomy) and International Symposia (Congress on Geo-Cosmic Relations - Amsterdam; Relations of Biological and Physicochemical Processes with Solar Activity and Other Environmental Factors - Pushchino, Russia).

Taken together, my findings have confirmed the original 1950s claims of the inventor of the cloudbuster, Wilhelm Reich.(11) To clarify, I am not the inventor of the cloudbuster, nor the first person to test it and announce positive results.(12) I am, however, the first natural scientist to undertake systematic and ongoing field tests of the cloudbuster, with presentation of significant positive results within formal academic institutions for open discussion and debate. As such, my work constitutes a corroboration and verification of Reich's prior findings.

Usually, this form or corroboration is sufficient to open the doors of science to professional advancement, funding possibilities, and so forth. In the present case, the positive results observed and reported have had just the opposite effect, in the USA at least. At the "official" academic level, Reich's biological and atmospheric discoveries are still widely misunderstood and irresponsibly misrepresented. A major problem for the scientist who is serious to investigate Reich's findings is the unfortunate fact that his major books and research journals were literally "banned and burned" by the US Government in the 1950s, in a legal case with much broader historical significance than the Scopes Monkey Trial.(13) Most of Reich's central experimental protocols appear only in those same destroyed books and journals,(14) which are difficult to obtain and not widely found in libraries.

In my view, Reich was a genius, and his findings provide a sound and productive basis for understanding many atmospheric processes and problems, as well as providing a very practical approach (Cosmic Orgone Engineering, or cloudbusting, as it is popularly called) to actually do something constructive in regions suffering from drought or desert spreading.

For example:

- Reich appears to have been the first scientist to describe the role of atmospheric haze as a precipitation-blocking factor in drought and desert atmospheres.(11) Reid Bryson's work on desert dusts is better known,(14) for sure, but the dust theory suffers from the assumption that "haze" is composed 100% of particulates. Reich attributed at least some of what we call haze to a stagnated form of the atmospheric orgone, which impedes the transmission of light. (Recall that Reich's orgone is an ether-like energy continuum, upon which the mechanics of light-transmission may be dependent.) Bryson's arguments, like those of Reich, were never widely acknowledged by atmospheric scientists. But from field observations, it is apparent that "desert haze" can be softened and observably reduced with a few minutes work with the cloudbuster. If haze were fully composed of particulates, this would not be possible. Based upon Reich's theory, and data on atmospheric haze, I have produced a comprehensive Desert-Drought Map which suggests a trans-oceanic global interconnectivity between all desert regions of the world, from which droughts periodically erupt.(15)

- Reich appears to have been the first scientist to fully describe what we today call forest-death,(16) including: the dying of trees from the top-down, hazy and suffocated atmospheres filled with ozones and acids, blackening rock surfaces, and other components widely observed and acknowledged today but virtually unknown in Reich's time. Based upon Reich's theory, and with assistance from a German group, I recently directed a 4-year experimental investigation of the cloudbuster's influence upon air pollution levels in the region around Berlin. The preliminary results appear positive, but there are several complicating factors which must be controlled for in the analysis, which will be forthcoming at some point in the near future.(17)

In both the above cases, Reich's observations agree with the modern-day descriptions, but his theories as to the mechanisms are based upon his life-energetic discoveries, which are essentially unknown to most scientists. This difference in mechanism may raise objections, but at a basic level Reich's approach provides a completely new and revolutionary way to look at nearly unresolvable problems. One may agree or disagree with Reich's assertion, of a living and sensitive atmosphere, but his ideas are testable and refutable, in the best tradition of the natural sciences, and provide an approach to actually do something of potential benefit in deserts and air-polluted environments. The classical mechanistic approaches, of "empty space" and a dead atmosphere, by definition claim no capacity in this regard. Surely, this alone warrants a more open attitude.

Our laboratory has recently been moved to a new headquarters in rural southwestern Oregon, at 4200' altitude, where some of the more sensitive orgone energy experiments described by Reich can be undertaken. Several educational seminars and workshops have been established for the interested student and/or professional, and our Drought-Abatement and Desert-Greening Programs continue to be offered as a service, to those regions in critical need where funding is available. Bring Rains in the Desert Southwest *

I. Preliminary Report on Five Cloudbusting
Expeditions into the Desert Southwest,
May-September, 1989

Background

Several years ago, the increasing pace of desert expansion, drought, and general atmospheric chaos prompted me to propose the development of a Desert Research Center in the arid portion of the American Southwest, with the goal of demonstrating a long-term desert greening effect using the Reich cloudbuster. During the years 1952-1956, Wilhelm Reich investigated basic energetic-atmospheric functions related to drought and desert formation, and demonstrated clear desert greening effects during his cloudbuster operations near Tucson, Arizona (1, 2). His early experiments provided the basic guiding principles for this more recent desert research (3,4). As a preliminary step in the development of a long-term desert greening project in the American Southwest, it was important to determine how much influence separate short-term cloudbusting operations could have on the desert atmosphere in an exceedingly dry area. In the summer of 1989, this experimental program of desert cloudbusting was conducted. Five seperate field experiments were planned and announced in advance, undertaken by teams of workers using portable equipment, and recorded in extensive field observations. National Weather Service (NWS) data were used later to analyze the geographical distribution and intensity of atmospheric effects.

The operations proceeded as follows: A transportable cloudbuster was driven to a very dry part of the American Southwest and set up for periods lasting a few days to a maximum of one week. After each operation, the research team with its cloudbuster left the area, completely suspending operations until the next expedition aproximately 3-1/2 weeks later. This allowed natural weather conditions to reestablish themselves. One experiment with this quick, mobile cloudbusting was previously undertaken in the desert Southwest in 1988, with much success (3). A site along the Colorado River, about 100 miles north of Mexico on the California/Arizona border was chosen for the experiments because of its easy access to abundant water and central location within one of the driest parts of North America. A second cloudbuster located in the San Francisco Bay area, operated by Richard Blasband, was used on two separate occasions to assist these desert operations, with a third, very simple cloudbuster located in Kansas for similar purposes. The Kansas portions of the operations were undertaken to enhance the downstream rainfall effects of any energetic potentials propagating toward the central U.S. out of the desert Southwest.

The five operations took place at approximately monthly intervals, beginning the first week of May, 1989. A letter detailing the dates and purposes of the desert cloudbusting expedition was sent to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration offices in Washington, DC, and telegrams for documentation were dispatched to those offices as well just prior to the onset of each individual operation.

Operation #1: May 8-10, 1989

This first operation began at a time when daytime temperatures were peaking at around 100-105°F. There was a forecast possibility of slightly lower temperatures, but certainly no rains or significant clouds were expected. (May and June are the driest months in the desert Colorado River basin region.) Plate 1 shows the thick atmospheric haze -- what Reich called DOR (for deadly atmospheric orgone) -- at the start of this particular desert cloudbusting operation. Reich was the first natural scientist to observe that such atmospheric haze possesses an energetic component which acts to block the development of clouds and rain.

After one day of operations, thunderstorms blossomed to the south of the cloudbuster, over northwest Mexico. After three days of hard work under the hot sun, streams of energy and moisture began to enter the dryland Colorado River basin area from both the west and the south. The westerly energy stream was composed of what classical meteorology calls the "polar jet"; after observing this shifting weather pattern, one puzzled TV meteorologist said, "It just can't do that" -- there was no "frontal boundary" or air mass with a sufficient temperature differential to "push" the jet stream southward into Arizona. And yet, the energy stream danced southward many thousands of miles from its original location near Alaska. The second, southerly energy stream was composed of the "sub-tropical jet," and it moved north into our area from the Gulf of California.

These streams of energy and moisture appeared as "fronts" on the weather map and were seen clearly as a long line of thin, wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds standing out against the desert sky (Plates 2 and 3). When the energy streams approached, hazy, stagnant DOR conditions in the lower atmosphere diminished, even though the clouds demarcating the energy streams were many thousands of feet in elevation. When the energy streams moved away, stagnanant DOR conditions worsened -- a clear demonstration these wispy clouds represented much more than just high-altitude "jet streams" of mechanically moving air.

As these two energy streams moved inland, one from the northwest, one from the south, they gradually approached and superimposed far to the north in Montana, causing gusty winds and heavy rainstorms. Even though this superimposition and sequestration was happening far away, the spiraling motion "sucked" much of the DOR-laden weather out of the desert basin, toward the center part of the storm system. With this effect, the cloudbusting operation was terminated late in the evening of May 10. The next morning saw an absolutely crisp and sparkling sky, completely free of the previous stagnent DOR haze, as seen in Plate 4. Temperatures that day only reached about 70°F! Crisp, cool, sparkling conditions persisted over the Arizona/New Mexico region for weeks, bringing widespread rains in the surrounding mountain areas. This rain also spread northeast into the Great Plains and Midwest.

The precipitation resulting from this first operation is documented in Figure 1, which shows the NWS daily precipitation averages for April and May of 1989 from 424 different weather stations in the southern half of both California and Nevada, and from the entire state of Arizona (5). As shown in Figure 1, increased rainfall was observed across this very large and mostly arid geographical basin and range territory immediately following the cloudbusting operation of May 8-10. A previous pulse of moisture on April 21-27 appears in Figure 1, the result of a coastal storm that moved into California but lacked enough energy to move inland over the high mountains (4000'-8000' elevation). The cloudbusting operation of May 8-10, however, was followed not only by increases in moisture and rains in coastal and southern California but also in moisture that moved far inland and upslope, into the basin and plateau regions of Nevada and Arizona where significant rainfall developed. The lag time between the onset of cloudbusting operations and the time of first rainfall was shortest (around one day) for the wetter coastal regions of California, and longest (around four days) in the arid desert basin regions. These data do not reflect thunderstorms blossoming in Mexico only one day after operations.

This kind of atmospheric response to cloudbusting during May, one of the driest months in the Colorado River Basin region, was remarkable, most gratifying, and in complete agreement with the results of previous desert cloudbusting operations undertaken in August of 1988 (3).

Operation #2: June 5-8, 1989

The second desert cloudbusting operation proceeded at a time of increased aridity and temperature. Widespread agricultural burning hampered visibility at the cloudbusting site and appeared to "choke up" and reduce the responsiveness of the atmosphere to the cloudbuster. In addition, a French nuclear bomb was tested in the western Pacific. The atmosphere was sluggish, immobilized, and had a "resigned" quality. After two frustrating days of work with the cloudbuster, the major observable change was a slight reduction in peak air temperatures. An assisting coordinated draw from a second cloudbuster located in the San Francisco Bay area was then begun, and this provided the additional energetic push needed to get things moving. Within a short time, a low-pressure storm system swept southeast from the San Francisco Bay area toward our location on the Colorado River, on a line directly between the two cloudbusters. This storm system dropped abundant precipitation on the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, an unlikely occurrence for the season. Plate 5 shows the first outbreak of these mountain thunderstorms. Operations were terminated shortly after the onset of these rains, but clouds and showers continued to blossom in the same remote, dryland area of southern California over the following days, pushing even farther inland, into southern Nevada and Arizona.

Operation #3: July 3-5, 1989

This operation took place at a critical time. Two nuclear bombs were detonated underground in Nevada the previous week. Also, two of the three Palo Verde nuclear power plants, near Phoenix, were being loaded with nuclear fuel, while the third had a recent emergency shut-down. Nuclear refueling and emergency shut-down procedures are well-known as "dirty" procedures, releasing relatively large quantities of radioactivity into the local atmosphere. These events produced a severe oranur reaction in the Southwestern U.S., an overexpanded, overexcited, highly charged atmospheric energetic condition with virtually no cloud cover or rains (6). An unusual clockwise-rotating low pressure system dominated the area. In addition, this early July cloudbusting operation was scheduled to start just before the natural annual transition from the driest to the wettest period of the desert Southwest, the so-called Arizona "monsoon" season which is characterized by thunderstorms. We predicted our operations would result in an earlier onset of the monsoon with a greater than normal quantity of rain.

Operations began on a day with shade temperatures over 110°F, and relative humidities at or less than 15%. After one day of operations, some very large thunderstorms appeared to the south of the cloudbuster over northwest Mexico. A very rapid, high-altitude streaming movement from south to north also developed but failed to trigger any storms, until it reached into western Nebraska where thunderstorms blossomed. Conditions worsened as the draw continued. By the second day of operations, we recorded a shocking 123°F shade temperature, the hottest in the entire U.S. for that day. Oranur conditions intensified, making work near the cloudbuster almost unendurable. Satellite images continued to show no storms or rains in the vicinity, except in Mexico and southeast Arizona.

Cloudbusting operations were terminated after the third day of widespread high temperature, high-pressure conditions, which threatened to spread northeast, and trigger drought across the Great Plains and Midwest. However, a final short cloudbusting draw was made from both cloudbusters, on the Colorado River and in the San Francisco Bay area, to ensure a good westerly flow to push this dome of hot air eastward. This proved successful, and over the following week the dome of hot air moved eastward across the entire U.S. and the Atlantic Ocean, eventually appearing in Western Europe, where it "stuck" for a period before finally dissipating. As the hot, agitated air and energy moved eastward out of the desert Southwest region, clouds and rains filled in behind it, expanding northward from Mexico and southern Arizona, and increasing in tempo over subsequent weeks. The monsoon season had arrived.

Operation #4: July 31-August 3, 1989

This operation began at a time when the southerly flow of moisture into the desert Southwest had already been underway for several weeks, with widespread thunderstorms and rainshowers occurring every other day. The goal this time was to increase rainfall to above normal amounts. DOR levels were still markedly elevated in some regions despite the rains, and several forecasters indicated the really heavy "monsoon" rains had yet to appear. An easterly flow of air from out over the Pacific Ocean was also reported to be hindering rains in the area, putting a "cap on instability"; this was contrary to expectation, given the air mass' origination over the moist ocean. More was learned about the stagnant DOR nature of some of these Pacific air currents and will be mentioned shortly.

After one day of operations, a large complex of thunderstorms developed just to the east of our site. The National Weather Service reported significant showers in a few surrounding areas, but no widespread rains were observed. In the eastern Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Gill began churning northward along the coast of Baja, and the counter-clockwise spiraling winds around this storm spread moisture inland up the Colorado River Valley. By the second day of operations, relative humidities were at 69%, although widespread rains failed to develop from this moisture. By the third day, Hurricane Gill completely fizzled out, and all clouds evaporated across the region.

We were very puzzled and frustrated by this turn of events, and acutely felt the need to better understand the nature of these Pacific air currents, which could sap the strength from approaching hurricanes and squelch rains far inland, even when high humidities and temperatures prevailed. This cloudbusting operation was terminated, and no assisting operations took place this time from the San Francisco Bay area. Moisture continued to stream into the desert Great Basin, however, and three days later, an incredible series of events occurred, evidencing a widespread break-up of the desert armor.

1. A "mild" earthquake, magnitude 5.2 on the Richter scale, and some highly unusual "earthquake weather" occurred north of the San Francisco Bay area. Attention was drawn to the connection between the earthquake and the strange weather primarily because a local TV meteorologist spent considerable time denying the existence of such a connection. On moving satellite images, a unusual pattern of thunderstorms could be
seen radiating outward from the earthquake zone, like spokes on a wheel, to the north, east, and south. Heavy rains and strong winds were produced from these storms in southern Oregon, Nevada, California, and Arizona. Rains, in fact, persisted for days in areas where, as one TV weatherman remarked, "It ought not to be raining."

2. Yuma, Arizona, received two years' rainfall in one week, and other Arizona and southern California stations likewise experienced heavy rains, and some flooding of low-lying desert topography was reported. More rains broke out across the entire Great Basin region in subsequent days and continued through the month. By the end of August, the region near to the cloudbusting site had received a whopping 500% of its normal summertime rainfall, as seen in Figure 2.

Operation #5: August 28-September 1, 1989

This operation began under hazy, DOR-infested, cloud-free conditions. After one day of operations with the cloudbuster, partly cloudy conditions developed across the Colorado River Basin area, with scattered showers across Arizona, primarily in the mountains. A large complex of thunderstorms developed in Mexico, south of Yuma, Arizona, and also near the cloudbuster. Given this rather immediate response to the operations, it was decided to initiate a second draw from the Pacific coastal region just north of Los Angeles, hopefully to bring Pacific moisture more directly to the inland desert regions. The cloudbuster was moved to Moro Bay, on the coast, and grounded in the Pacific Ocean, drawing westward directly from a large fog bank. After one-half day of work at this site, the operation was terminated, and we returned home to observe subsequent events.

The results were delayed, but significant. A tropical depression in the southern Pacific, about one thousand miles away, slowly moved northward off the coast of Mexico. Over a period of several days, this depression developed into Tropical Storm Octave and later became Hurricane Octave for a short period. This storm continued northward off the coast of Baja, but soon weakened and spread rains over a large area. There was enough momentum, however, to bring these rains ashore in southern California. This entire slow process took about 10 days. On September 15-17, highly unusual, unseasonal rainfalls moved inland across southern California. This was the first significant precipitation in two years for some parts of southern California. The atmosphere was refreshed and cleaned of its DOR-infested, hazy characteristics. The moisture was welcomed by firefighters and foresters, who were previously sounding an alarm about the dry conditions. A second major pulse of moisture occurred in the same area in late September.

Summary of Part I

With the exception of the first cloudbusting operation, NWS weather data have not been reviewed to provide "official" documentation for the field observations described here. Based on past experience, there is good reason to believe they will be fully corroborated and strengthened by such a review and data analysis (NOTE: These data are now presented in the report which follows on page 21). Certainly, these desert cloudbusting experiments have provided a wealth of observations, plus many new and important points worthy of future study and research:

1. Preliminary indications suggest, as indicated in Figure 2, some areas of the desert southwest (southern California, southern Nevada, and Arizona) were unusually wet, receiving up to 500% of normal rains; other parts of the same region remained quite dry, however, receiving less than half their normal precipitation. This Figure suggests that DOR-laden desert air was sequestered in some areas but not in others. (Note: Figure 2 does not include data on the rains following the fifth cloudbusting operation, which was also followed by at least two major pulses of rainfall in southern California.)

2. Fire danger in the Western states dramatically lessened in 1989, particularly after rains in August and September when the major breakthrough occurred. For example, by September 15, 1988 (a record dry year in the U.S.), forest fires claimed nearly 4.1 million acres in the Western states, with a total of over 5 million acres burned for the year. As of September 15, 1989, following the series of desert cloudbusting operations, only 1.4 million acres were lost, with a very low fire danger for most parts of the U.S. (7).

3. Stagnant, DOR-infested air was repeatedly observed moving into coastal southern California and the Southwestern desert Great Basin from off the Pacific Ocean itself. On several occasions, measurements of cool, low-humidity winds blowing in from the open ocean were made right on the Pacific shore. While normally attributed to "cool ocean currents," these dry ocean winds appear to involve other energetic factors. They were contaminated, for example, with a thick DOR haze which at times completely obscured the horizon, similar to the DOR haze in the heart of the desert. Plate 6 shows DOR moving inland from the open ocean as seen from an altitude of several hundred feet. Usually identified as a "cooled marine layer" or "dry fog" with a characteristic temperature inversion, the DOR "inverted" air was literally followed as it blew inland up over mountain passes, into the dry inland valleys of California and Arizona. When such hazy DOR was first observed at our desert field station along the Colorado River, it was thought to be Los Angeles DOR air pollution; another time, "only" smoke from agricultural fires; then, DOR blown out to sea from the Mexican deserts, returning inland to the southern California coast. In the final analysis, however, this DOR probably originates far out over the Pacific Ocean, possibly from the deserts of Asia, as discussed in a prior paper on "Desert Expansion and Drought" (4).

Plate 6: The Pacific DOR haze layer, mechanistically termed the "marine inversion" or "dry fog" layer. This low-humidity air is moving onshore from a dry zone over the eastern Pacific Ocean, into a largely coastal dryland region; it eventually merges with and feeds the DOR haze layer of the inland deserts.

4. While the exact nature of the 1987-1988 drought crisis has yet to be understood, Figure 3 suggests there are at least two cyclical components. The Figure first identifies a regular summertime increase in the area of severe or extreme drought within the U.S. This cyclical aspect is a result of the "normal," "dry season" climate affecting the California coast each year and appears to be related to the dry Pacific Ocean DOR layer, discussed above. However, in the summer of 1987, this "seasonal" component expanded from a yearly maximum of 10% to over 35% of the entire U.S. being affected by severe or extreme drought conditions. The reasons for the enormous expansion of drought during the late summer of 1987 remains a mystery. Part of the answer, however, may lie in the movement of a greater than "normal" quantity of DOR from its Pacific Ocean source into the U.S. This span of dry, DOR air, moving east-northeast from the Pacific Ocean inland across the Rocky Mountains into the Central U.S., can often be observed as a huge swath of cloud-free atmosphere on satellite images one striking example of which was previously published in the Journal of Orgonomy (3:107).

5. The desert Southwest exerts a controlling influence over rainfall in those wetter regions immediately adjacent to it. When DOR builds up and intensifies within the desert basin regions and "spills over" into adjacent wetter regions, droughts, heat waves, and forest fires are triggered. On the other hand, as rains break out within the desert region itself, the DOR desert air mass is reduced, and rains subsequently appear and are more easily maintained in those wetter borderlands. In this manner, the summer 1989 cloudbusting operations in the desert Southwest appear to have been helpful, perhaps crucial, in eliminating drought conditions in parts of the Great Plains and Midwest "downstream" from the Southwestern deserts. As seen in Figure 2 above, for the summer months of June, July, and August of 1989, most parts of the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains experienced rainfall totals of over 100%, with many areas exceeding 200% of normal precipitation. The Great Plains and Midwest have clearly emerged from their prior drought condition, and rainfall totals in most of those farm belt states have increased above the deficit levels of prior drought years. Figure 4 emphasizes the unusual nature of the Summer 1989 rainfalls, which increased in magnitude and scope to levels not generally occurring in the U.S. since January of 1988. Indeed, the problem in some areas of the U.S. during the summer and fall of 1989 was too much rain. Although not an optimal situation, this was clearly better than the catastrophic drought and fire conditions prevailing in 1988. Recently obtained NWS rainfall data indicate the coastal and interior parts of central California received over 500% of its normal September rainfall (Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin, October 11, 1989, pg. 12).

6. Observations made during these experiments support the hypothesis relating earthquakes and weather. In particular, an earthquake of only moderate magnitude was followed by the geographically related genesis and movement of storms within a previously "stuck," immobilized atmosphere.

7. The relationship between underground nuclear bomb testing and atmospheric phenomena needs further research and study. Soaring summertime temperatures were observed in the open desert shortly after a series of such tests. Additional systematic observations suggest a tendency for rainfall-diverting high pressures to build in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast following underground testing in Nevada. Similarly, an increasing buildup of DOR-laden air, followed by drought or severe storms, has been observed in the Great Plains also following testing in Nevada. These observations are in keeping with the recently published findings of Kato (8) and Whiteford (9), which can only be explained on the basis of a nonmechanical, energetic process.

All the above observations and findings reinforce strongly the author's feeling that a more coherent and focused study of the atmosphere from an orgone-energetic viewpoint is vitally necessary. The connections between desert and drought and the global nature of various rain-inhibiting "inversion" phenomena need rigorous study (4). Careful documentation of the atmospheric effects of underground nuclear testing and practical solutions to the problem of desert expansion are absolute essentials for our collective survival. This cannot be left to mechanistic meteorologists, who generally deny any possible relationships, or that any problem exists.

II. Data Analysis of Five 1989 Desert

Cloudbusting Experiments

National Weather Service (NWS) precipitation data were obtained from a total of 424 different precipitation measuring gauges located in Southern California, Southern Nevada, and Arizona (10). Figure 5 shows the areas from which the new precipitation data were gathered, and the primary location of the cloudbuster during the experiments. The NWS data presented here indicate a significant increase in precipitation within the large dryland basin region following cloudbusting operations. It is recalled from the preceding report that one region, immediately adjacent to the site where the operating cloudbuster was located and about 100 miles in diameter, received up to 500% of the normal summer rainfall (see Figure 2.) The data presented here indicate that precipitation amounts following the cloudbusting operations generally increased for a much larger territory within the arid desert basin. This increased rainfall was not uniformly distributed, however, but concentrated according to the wind and cloud characteristics which developed after the operations were under way.

The first of the five 1989 cloudbusting operations, for example, took place in early May and was characterized by general west-to-east energy streaming ("jet stream") into the area and the inland movement of moist Pacific winds with frontal activity. These westerly winds brought moisture and rainfall first to the mountain areas of Southern California, including the Los Angeles basin region, and second to the arid Colorado River Valley and highlands of Arizona and Southern Nevada. Figure 6, which gives average daily rainfall data from 210 different NWS gauges in Southern California, shows this relationship. The first cloudbusting operation of early May, characterized by westerly winds, was accompanied and followed by a clear peak in southern California rains; the other four operations, which did not have as strong westerly winds, were not. Instead, the predominant energy streams and moist winds during and immediately following the last four 1989 cloudbusting operations of early June, July, August, and September were characterized by a generally south-to-north movement from the equatorial Pacific Ocean, northeast across Baja and the Gulf of California, northward through the Colorado River Valley, and then north and east into Arizona and the Nevada highlands. In these latter four cases, coastal, frontal activity was minimal, and isolated inland thunderstorms predominated; moisture moving north through the Gulf of California, therefore, did not significantly affect Southern California, but rains did develop in Arizona and Southern Nevada. Figure 7 documents this observation and summarizes NWS data from 214 different rain gauges in those latter two states. Figure 7 shows a very clear peak in rainfall immediately following the early May, July, and September cloudbusting oeprations. The early August cloudbusting operation took place during the normal, rainy summer monsoon of the arid Colorado River Basin region, and so its influences were lost in the background chaos of the normal August rainfall. The early June operation was followed by only a very small rainfall episode.

Figure 8 shows the daily rainfall data from all 424 rain gauges in the three state regions combined. A periodicity, or atmospheric pulsation similar to that seen in wetland regions, was observed in the data for the months of September and October, and persisted for several weeks after the last of the cloudbusting operations. However, no attempt has been made to find out how often this pulsatory rainfall characteristic naturally develops in this large dryland basin region. These data indicate that four out of the five cloudbusting operations were followed by significant peaks in rainfall, which is similar to the success rate (80%) observed in prior cloudbusting operations (11).

The averaged daily precipitation values for all 424 rain gauges in the entire three-state region were converted to percentage-of-30-day maximum values. This was done for each of the five individual cloudbusting operations, centered on the first day of each operation, such that daily precipitation percentage values for two weeks before and after each operation were obtained. The percentage data preceding and following the five separate cloudbusting operations were then overlapped and averaged together. This approach demonstrated an even more solid connection between thefive 1989 cloudbusting operations and rainfall in the arid Colorado River Basin. As seen in Figure 9, the rainfall occurring within the basin region after the cloudbusting operations was approximately twice that observed during the pre-operations period. This period of doubled rainfall developed about 48 hours after the onset of operations and persisted for approximately one week thereafter.

The implications of these atmospheric responses to the influence of a single large cloudbuster working for only a few days of each month are startling, and their importance during an epoch of expanding deserts is significant. While these positive results are very encouraging, much remains to be learned about the atmospheric-energetic processes involved in the creation and maintenance of this particular desert region. The lessons learned from this region may or may not be fully applicable to other desert regions. Also, many questions were raised about the potential ecological and social effects of greening a large desert region through use of the cloudbuster. Desert greening is climate change, after all, and this implies changes in flora, fauna, and human habitat. Decisions on any major undertaking to bring about climate change, even apparently beneficial change, must be made on a social level. However, unplanned climate change is already occurring in the reckless widespread assault on the Earth's forests and grasslands by nearly every human culture around the world and in the related artificial, human-forced expansion of the Earth's deserts. The drylands and deserts of the world do not exist in a stable equilibrium with respect to surrounding wetland regions; the deserts are getting larger by the year, while the green areas of the Earth are shrinking in size (12). It is doubtful that any rational collective social decisions can be made regarding these new scientific findings until at least the irrational, antisocial destruction the Earth's living plant cover has been halted.

These important concerns aside, one thing is very clear: The data from this experiment clearly support Dr. Reich's findings from the 1950s that the cloudbuster possesses a true desert greening capability (13). Certainly, an extended period of field research is warranted.*

James DeMeo has been studying the works of the late Dr. Wilhelm Reich since the early 1970s, to include the techniques and devices for cloudbusting. He undertook the first systematic research investigating the cloudbuster within a mainstream academic institution, the University of Kansas at Lawrence, producing a report with positive conclusions. He has led cloudbusting expeditions for drought abatement in various parts of the United States, with overseas desert-greening operations in Israel, Namibia and Eritrea, Africa, with over 25 published articles on the subject, indicating widespread beneficial rains as an outcome. DeMeo formerly was a professor of geography and atmospheric-environmental science subjects at Illinois State University and the University of Miami. He currently is Director of the Orgone Biophysical Research Lab in Ashland, Oregon, and is a senior working member of the USA Core Network, a group of scientists, physicians and naturalists engaged since the 1970s in socially-responsible applications of the cloudbusting technology against drought and atmospheric stagnation. Introduction

The following paper is a personal view about how the growing interest in the techniques of cloudbusting might best be channeled and developed for the long term benefit of life on Earth. The purpose of this paper is to stimulate discussion among those currently engaged in research with the cloudbuster, as well as to sound a warning regarding those who are abusing this new discovery. I assume the reader is generally familiar with the works of Wilhelm Reich, to include both his sex-economic and orgone biophysical findings. If the reader is not, and is contemplating, or has already undertaken use of a cloudbuster-type instrument, then this discussion is particularly pertinent.

Over the last decade or two, Reich's findings on the existence of a powerful atmospheric energy continuum, which underlies most weather phenomena, have been verified and strengthened. Reich's invention, the cloudbuster, has been used to break many droughts, and on occasion, to even bring rains to deserts. We know that the cloudbuster has a powerful influence. When properly used, it can trigger the genesis of large isolated storms, or even entire frontal systems, which can quench parched lands and change a stagnant atmosphere back to its more natural sparkling character. The technique has the general capability of affecting jet stream movements and steering large storms; even hurricanes may be diverted. Cloud cover can be increased to generate widespread rains, or reduced to dry up rains during times of flooding. Fogs can be lifted or created. In skilled hands, the instrument has a variety of effects which can benefit a region, primarily in restoring natural cycles of rainfall to areas of drought or desert. It may yet provide a means for reducing the acidity of rainfall. However, there is a dark side to all of this.

There currently are two major methods by which Reich's works are being distorted today. One is exemplified by the more rigid, protective aspects of conservatism, which often casts a suspicious eye towards anything new. This approach kills new findings by repressing them, or simply stomping them to bits, using censorship or Police State tactics. The other method for tearing down a new, disturbing discovery is more devious and hidden, less direct and straightforward, and therefore much more difficult to deal with. This method pretends to be a friend of the new discovery, but is actually secretly at work to kill it. This is done by diluting the discovery until it is devoid of any power or strength, or by eliminating the more disturbing, and socially-unpopular aspects of the new discovery. Proponents of this latter method often pretend to be friendly towards Reich's works, even though they have ripped the guts out of it. Additionally, some of these pretenders engage in attacks against anyone who does not accept their watered-down or pirated version as the truth. They may actually spread wild exaggerations, half-truths, or blatant distortions, which are designed, consciously or otherwise, to provoke a negative reaction from more conservative elements in society. And this, of course, obstructs rational progress in manner that is almost as efficient as censorship. In extreme cases, there is even underhanded conniving and direct conspiracy with those in power who have long been trying to kill the new discovery. In this paper, I will explore some of these social trends as they relate to Reich's atmospheric research.

Reich was, in the late 1950s, thrown into an American prison, and had all his books and research journals burned by court order. For decades, his research findings had been attacked, but rarely seriously considered or investigated, by a biomedical and scientific establishment blinded by arrogance and power. The attack against him, led by the Food and Drug Administration and the courts during a politically "conservative" period, was stimulated by a series of slanderous articles that previously appeared in the "liberal" press. Had this not occurred, Reich would have continued with his research program, and engaged in a larger-scale training program for individuals interested in atmospheric stagnation and cloudbusting. Cloudbuster operators, trained under Reich's guidance, working within a larger community of scientists, would have been able to integrate and coordinate their work with weather forecasters, farmers and environmentalists, to assist with the sequestration of atmospheric pollutants, to rapidly end droughts, to lessen severe storms, and to roll back the borders of our presently expanding deserts.

Reich instead died in prison, his coworkers stunned and disorganized for half a decade, until a small number of workers, primarily (but not exclusively) under the leadership of Dr. Elsworth Baker, reorganized, began publishing a scientific journal, and holding educational seminars. For the next several decades, work in orgonomy, the science of the orgone energy functions in living Nature, proceeded quietly, gathering new evidence and support from various quarters. A new generation of younger scientists, among whom I count myself, studied Reich's works and replicated his experiments. During this period of slow growth, there was no attempt by orgonomists (the name given to scientists and health-care practitioners applying Reich's discoveries) to make much contact with the larger scientific community, for understandable reasons. For many years Reich's works were read only by the most serious of researchers and naturalists, who could see the dead-endedness and deadly nature of our contemporary mystical-mechanistic science. Reich's findings were, and continue to be rejected without examination by the average scientist and physicians, who today spend little time observing nature, who are not well read on broader natural scientific issues, and are generally not even aware of the basic starting assumptions underlying their own favorite theories and world views.

In other quarters, Reich became a cult figure, someone who was publicly admired, but secretly hated, and torn apart. Increasingly, various individuals pirated bits and pieces of his work, claiming them as their own "findings", without Reich's priority being acknowledged. Generally, these pirates cleave off parts of Reich's work, leaving behind the more important, but socially unpopular aspects, thereby gaining much applause and recognition for themselves. Almost all of the contemporary works on the emotional aspects of the cancer disease, on the phenomena of "body language", and on therapeutic "emotional release" or "body work", owe an intellectual debt to Reich that is rarely acknowledged. On the West Coast of the USA, for example, there are perhaps a hundred different types of such therapy, each of which is based upon one or another small part of Reich's work. A common aspect of these pirates is that they ignore the real guts of his work, namely his findings on genitality, the function of the orgasm, and also the role of social institutions, and the emotional plague, in re-creating the emotional damage and armoring in each new generation of young infants and children.

Few, if any, of these dilutions of Reich make mention of the sick social fabric, which creates mental illness and psychopathology, or the kinds of things that must be done to make significant changes towards a more healthy, self-regulated world. Whereas Reich came to focus upon the damage done to infants, children, and adolescents by hospitals, parents, schools, churches, and other major social institutions, the distorters and diluters mention little of this. In so doing, they render his findings into socially-acceptable pap, which is incapable of bringing about any effective or helpful change. Or, they wildly distort his findings, advocating a sexual "free-for-all" in a public manner, dragging Reich's name along as if he advocated such a position, when he clearly did not. Reich called these people freedom peddlers, and believed their real, hidden mission was to provoke a negative reaction from the more conservative majority (whom, by the way, Reich correctly identified as being generally more emotionally healthy than the pornographic freedom peddler). There are many very skilled health-care practitioners, laypersons and physicians both, who follow Reich's techniques very closely, and who address in a very straightforward way his findings on social phenomena. But some therapy practitioners, often in organizations bearing the words "neo-Reichian" this, or "beyond Reich" that, are themselves very highly armored individuals, who lack a serious and studied approach to what they do, and who may only add to the general social chaos and confusion. Fortunately, this is not always the case.

There is a parallel between this modern-day abuse of Reich's behavioral findings, and the treatment of his atmospheric findings. There are today, for example, a growing number of people who take a similarly irresponsible, distorted approach to the very serious atmospheric work. This is so, even though some of them offer praise for Reich. But unlike the irrational therapist, whose damage or lack of beneficial help is limited to only a small number of therapy patients, the irrational cloudbuster operator has the potential to do terrible damage to entire regions, and kill a lot of people. Their actions place the entire field of orgone biophysics in jeopardy, and work to block the development of more rational efforts.

The reader who is not familiar with sex-economy, orgone biophysics, and cloudbusting, or who does not know the history of Reich and orgonomy, may find these statements to be quite harsh, even unbelievable. However, I have slowly become aware of these issues after several decades of field work experience with the cloudbuster - starting in 1977 during my pioneering study on cloudbusting at the University of Kansas - and following an equal number of years making contacts with all sorts of people expressing an interest in, or barely-hidden hatred of Reich's work. I will summarize some of the evidence for this growing danger, and hopefully identify, isolate, and help put a stop to the dangerous activities of some people who undertake cloudbusting in such a cavalier manner. We cannot afford to see this new technology become divorced from the safeguards Reich developed, nor from sound ecological or scientific principles.

Overview of the Global Atmospheric Problem

First, it must be acknowledged that we are at a critical point in Earth's history. The science of orgonomy is unique in its perspective in that it identifies the overwhelming majority of humans as being armored, that is, walled off from their deeper feelings, as a consequence of being subjected to ritualized trauma, punishments, and repressions of basic biological impulses. One result of this biophysical and characterological armoring is that contemporary humankind has lost its capacity to make full and immediate contact with the outer world. This element of contactlessness thwarts the emotional aspects of life, and places people at odds with each other, and with the outer world of nature. Not only are most marriages, and relationships between parents and children badly affected, but likewise, people's perceptions of the outer world are tainted. In general, humans feel disconnected from nature, not a part of it, because deeper human emotion and feelings are, for the most part, submerged and camouflaged. The human who is not in touch with their deeper biological core, and who has contained within their character structure a significant quantity of repressed feeling, be it crying, terror, or rage, cannot be fully in touch with the outer world and cosmos. Those repressed feelings constantly get in the way, affecting behavior, attitudes, patterns of thought, and even one's body posture and physiology. People may retain an inkling of this deeper connection with nature and the cosmos, but the armoring leads to a mystification of perceptions, and the relegation of all cosmic creative forces into an intangible nether-world, rather than to the surrounding natural environment. All of this was documented in Reich's various books, and is the central point of discovery from which his findings on the cloudbuster and orgone (life) energy developed.

After some 6000 years of global chaos and warfare, human populations are now too great for the capacity of various lands to support them. Population size and growth are today at historically unprecedented levels, and we are spoiling our nest in a very rapid, perhaps irreparable manner. In addition to belching forth huge quantities of pollutants into the Earth's water and atmosphere, we are stripping away most of the planetary vegetation layer, turning forests into grasslands, and grasslands into deserts. Indeed, desert formation appears to be the end result of human habitation, or at least, human habitation of the armored variety. Reich warned in the late 1950s that the world was becoming increasingly arid and hot, and slowly converting into desert. Today, with the New Millinneum, we unfortunately have ample evidence, from arid lands researchers and climatologists worldwide, to confirm this warning. Consider the following reports (gathered in the 1980s for the first edition of this article):

1) On a global basis, droughts and desert spreading have significantly increased over the last 100 years. New desert lands are today being created at an alarming pace, with around 60,000 to 70,000 square kilometers of additional new desert each year. This is an area approximately equal to the state of West Virginia.

2) Global deforestation is also proceeding at an alarming pace. At least 200,000 square kilometers of trees vanish each year, an area equal to the state of Pennsylvania. From this trend, and given the tiny amount of reforestation that occurs, it has been estimated that the world's rainforests will be gone within 70 years. Without protection, remaining stands of all kinds of unprotected forest may be completely wiped out by around 2100 AD.

3) In the USA, the period from 1986 to 1988 has seen massive droughts of historical magnitude in the Southeastern, Midwestern, and Great Plains States, plus massive drought and forest fires in the West, which continues (c.1988) to suffer from dry conditions.

4) A massive drought of historical proportions hit India in 1986, and would have prompted massive starvation had not grain been stockpiled from previous wet years. The subcontinent has been nearly stripped bare of its native tree cover, and portions are rapidly converting into desert. A major disaster cannot long be avoided. Already, excessive tree-cutting and erosion in the Ganges watershed has resulted in siltation, recurrent flooding, and epidemics in the densely populated downstream delta region of Bangladesh.

5) In China, massive drought and forest fires of historical magnitude hit the northern provinces in 1987, and massive areas were burned. Tropical Pacific rainforests have also been subject to unprecedented drought and forest fires.

6) The Sahel zone of East Africa has experienced a failure of seasonal rains every other year or so. The disaster in this area is no longer "newsworthy", and hence receives much less public attention. Widespread suffering, compounded by hundreds of years of tribal and civil war, continues in those areas.

7) The year 1987 was the hottest year ever recorded, giving rise to the speculation that the long-forecast "greenhouse effect" is now taking hold. The massive drought of 1988 raised this possibility to a higher level of awareness. Whatever, it is clear that droughts and heat waves are on the increase. These effects are shocking even many conservative climatologists who, a decade ago, entirely dismissed such a possibility.

8) Where rains do fall, they are increasingly poisoned. Acid Rains and Forest Death (a more appropriate term) is now global in scope, killing the life in many forests, inland lakes, and coastal waters. In the 1980s, over 50% of all trees in West German forests are considered to be dead or dying, up from only around 10% as recently as 1980. Forests in East Germany, Poland, and the USSR may be in even worse condition.

9) With increasing tropical deforestation, the atmosphere over the rainforests is beginning to stagnate, giving rise to nearly permanent reductions in rainfall quantity, and highly unusual episodes of drought, or disastrous delays in the onset of monsoon rains. Significant and highly unusual declines in rains over deforested parts of Brazil have already been measured. Massive wildfires have occasionally developed, as seen in Indonesia in the mid-1990s.

10) The quality of the sunlight itself is changing, as the energetics and chemistry of the atmosphere are disturbed. The sunlight is becoming harsher, more burning and killing in nature, particularly as stratospheric ozone is depleted.

11) A record number of icebergs have "calved", or broken away from the Antarctic coastal ice shelf in the last few years. Some of these icebergs are of an enormous, previously unseen size. One is the size of the state of Rhode Island, another the size of Connecticut. This may be the result of the greenhouse warming, and a precursor to an anticipated rise in sea level. Meanwhile, sea levels have measurably risen in some coastal areas.

12) Tropical Caribbean coral reefs are dying in record numbers, from causes unknown, as are many North Atlantic seals. Amazingly, many government leaders have lined up to disclaim responsibility, saying that the thousands of tons of garbage, toxic sludge, and radioactive waste we dump into the oceans each year "cannot be the cause".

13) Paralleling these changes are the widespread extinctions of various species, from all quarters of the globe, related to the continuing human population explosion, and widespread destructions of animal habitats.

The above facts are sobering, indeed! We are witnessing an accelerating deterioration and destabilization of Earth's life support systems. Collectively, our species has been polluting both the air and water, destroying entire forests, and subjecting marginal lands to abusive agricultural and herding practices. As these changes have occurred, the energetics of entire ecosystems have been badly disturbed, and the atmosphere has increasingly become stagnant, toxic, and droughty.

The bottom line of this whole distressing process is simply that our beautiful and unique, wet, blue planet is slowly being converted into a ball of dust. In 200 years, if present trends continue, Earth might look more like the planet Mars, a lifeless ball covered with sand dunes and barren wastelands. If a science fiction book were to be written about some hypothetical planet where these conditions were allowed to persist, we should have to conclude that its inhabitants were totally insane. And yet, every fact given above is well documented.

It is clear that there is a pressing need for new approaches to these problems, and the works of Reich provide important solutions. His sex- economic work would, if more widely accepted, prompt a more rational approach to matters regarding childbirth and family planning, thereby slowing birth rates. However, this is not likely to happen quickly, given the antipathy and resistance the collective psyche has exhibited towards his findings, and all matters regarding a genuine, non-pornographic sexual freedom. For these reasons, environmental and social conditions within the hardest pressed areas of the globe, notably in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, are expected to continue deteriorating. As this happens, desertification, and general atmospheric stagnation will increase, prompting an increase in the frequency and intensity of drought. Famine, starvation, social unrest, and mass migrations can be anticipated to occur in these same regions, with an increasing frequency, over the next 100 years.

Given the above hard facts, it is no mystery why Reich's findings on atmospheric functioning, and specifically the techniques of cloudbusting, have attracted a growing interest. In trained hands, the cloudbuster has the potential to neutralize the atmospheric stagnation underlying drought, and restore rainfall over entire regions. And there is no better remedy for the major economic loss, or the mass famine and starvation associated with drought than a return of plentiful rains. Cloudbusting is a technology which could, if developed properly, bring rains to the deserts and drought-affected lands of the world, to give hard-pressed peoples the time they will need to make social changes. The cloudbuster also offers a potential means to mitigate the effects of acidic rains, a capability which, if proven, would help to preserve the remaining forests of the world until such time that widespread pollution controls are implemented.

The Problem of Operator Character Structure

Cloudbusting requires more of the people who engage in it than the mere "desire" to "get involved", or to "make rain", or the mere mechanical ability to assemble a few pipes and wave them about in the air. For safe and effective operations to occur, the operator must know exactly what they are doing, and why. They must have a good working knowledge of the cloudbusting techniques and methods which have been worked out over the last 35 years. They must be educated in basic climatology and atmospheric dynamics. Additionally, and most importantly, the cloudbuster operator must not possess any significant degree of biophysical, emotional armoring. They must be emotionally fluid, with a capacity for full bioenergetic contact with the natural environment. They must possess the capability of perceptively understanding the unspoken language of the living, which is energetically expressed in the atmosphere and landscape.

It must always be kept in mind that the cloudbuster is a tool by which the atmosphere is restored to a state of self-regulated functioning. It is not a "weather modification" apparatus, like cloudseeding, where the atmosphere is forced to do this or that, or is "pushed about" to do something it normally would not do. Anyone wishing to work with a cloudbuster must therefore have an intuitive, gut-level grasp of the concept of atmospheric self-regulation. For this, they must be self-regulated people, free from emotional inhibition and secondary behavior. They must, as much as is possible, be what Reich called unarmored, genital characters, that is, individuals who have maintained, or regained through therapy, the capacity for making full contact with their deeper emotions, and who are orgastically potent, as defined by Reich. They must not be openly or secretly cruel, sadistic, or domineering towards the opposite sex, nor be timid or fearful. This question of how the individual relates to the opposite sex is, aside from other characterological considerations, a give-away as to their deeper emotional self, and a clear predictor of the attitude and behavior towards the natural environment.

Reich's initial point of departure from conventional modes of thinking was, as he put it, the discovery of "the bioenergetic function of excitability and motility of living substance". Through this discovery, he eventually clarified the relationship between psyche and soma, which are underlain by the deeper common functioning principle of the biological orgone energy, or life energy. As this energy flows or pulses through the body, it gives rise to a spectrum of psychic, emotional, and somatic, organic phenomena. The first volume of Reich's monumental work Discovery of the Orgone was subtitled Function of the Orgasm, as the orgasm was identified to have an important discharge function, the capacity for which was always present in emotionally healthy, non-neurotic people, but always absent in people with neuroses, or any other form of mild or severe mental illness. Disturbances in orgastic functioning, and pathological attitudes toward the opposite sex, underlay every neurotic, self-destructive, or sadistic component in behavior. Indeed, Reich came to view the love life of his patients as a primary indicator of emotional and mental health. He wrote extensively on the sexual psychopathology among power-hungry politicians and dictators, and among the masses of people who chased after them, doing their dirty work, casting off their social responsibilities for the comfortable yolk of despotism. Emotional health and sexual health were inseparable, and formed the basis of clear, unimpeded bioenergetic contact between the individual and the larger natural environment.

Just as Reich found that the unimpeded flow of life energy in the body was essential to psychic and somatic health, he also discovered, some years later, that a similar unimpeded flow of life energy in the atmosphere was necessary for maintenance of atmospheric pulsation and rainfall. Indeed, the properties and movements of the mass-free orgone energy in the atmosphere gave rise to similar life-like behaviors in the animal world, where the same energy was trapped inside an organismic membrane. This life-like quality in the natural environment has actually been seen and felt by many of the more gentle, non-violent peoples of the world, and their religions were based upon such direct perceptions; among these non-violent peoples, the creative, spirit forces charged and animated the natural world, and were not "beyond the senses". But the capacity to feel, and make deeper contact with these forces, which Reich experimentally objectified as a specific life energy, named the orgone energy, has largely been lost among the authoritarian, sex-negative, war-making peoples of the "civilized" world. They simply cannot see it, or feel it, and therefore have greatly mystified perceptions of nature, to include the basic biological and sexual nature of their own selves and children. They may have an inkling or residue of feeling of this larger force at work within the cosmos. But because of a lack of direct perception, they project a human face upon it, claim that it is "non-physical" in nature, that it exists only in another dimension, in some far-removed "heaven" or "nirvana", and look to "spiritual experts" for assistance in restoring the lost contact. Or, they project their own inner demons into the outer world, claiming the beneficial life-force is filled with "evil entities", which are, in fact, only a misperception of their own bottled-up angry emotions. The majority of politicians, businessmen, scientists, and other high-caste individuals also have lost this perceptive connection with nature, and so are more ready, willing, and able to participate in the wholesale destruction of Earth's life and natural resources, and likewise to lead a compliant and fearful humanity from one social disaster to another. Even so, many contemporary people have retained a bioenergetic perception of their connectedness with the natural world, and are very uncomfortable with the destructive nature of industry, Church, and State.

Unlike so many other scientific discoveries, which have been perverted into weapons to destroy or thwart life, Reich gives us a criteria for evaluating the character structure of those who wish to involve themselves in life-positive works. How can we best recognize the individual who is emotionally capable of restoring the flow of life energy in the atmosphere? The criteria are fairly simple, in principle at least. If a person can fully express their emotions, has a deep and full respiration and relaxed physical posture, does not possess tendencies of sadism and violent aggression, but is neither timid nor lacking in healthy, aggressive seeking-out for fulfillment of their needs, if they are gentle with children, capable of a warm and loving relationship with the opposite sex, and spontaneously respectful of nature and wild creatures, then that individual is a reasonable candidate for engaging in cloudbusting. For if their bioenergy can flow and pulse freely, if they are emotionally fluid and contactful, they will possess the gut level feeling necessary to use the cloudbuster in a perceptive and effective manner.

On the other hand, it is not possible for a person who has devoted their entire life to the sequestration of emotion, to the negation of sexuality, through either antisexual celibacy or emotion-killing pornography, to maintain the kind of feeling necessary for being a good cloudbuster operator. Persons addicted to drugs or alcohol, or who hold fast to extreme religious or political viewpoints are likewise not candidates for this work. It does not matter if the individual is "highly respected" in the community, or if they are a successful farmer, rancher, or businessman, or if they have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree, or if they are a member of the National Academy of Sciences, or whatever. Just as good vision and reflexes are necessary for being a good aircraft pilot, a mobile and emotionally fluid bioenergy system, as Reich defined it, is a necessary prerequisite for engaging in cloudbusting. Nothing given above should be taken as an invitation for an unskilled or unstudied approach to the question, nor are academic degrees or high social standing intrinsically a barrier to this work. By themselves, however, they are simply not enough.

This emphasis upon maintaining a lively, self-regulated character structure, and a deeper emotional contactfulness, is a most important consideration. The cloudbuster operator must be capable of organically feeling the various bioenergetic phenomena at work in the atmosphere. They must be capable of discriminating between states of atmospheric expansion or contraction, high or low charge, and stagnation or agitation. They likewise must be able to see the phenomenon of atmospheric sparkle and lustre, and the pulsing orgone units. The expressive "language of the living" is manifested in cloud forms, sky, atmosphere, and landscape, and is vital to understanding the functions of weather. Most importantly, they must also be capable of recognizing any traces of emotional plague within themselves, any tendencies towards contactlessness or contraction or overcharge of their organism, and learn to withdraw from the work at those times their own structure gets in the way. Their motto, like the one hanging on Reich's laboratory wall at Orgonon, should be "WORK, NOT POLITICS".

These emotional considerations are most important, for the cloudbuster operator works with a tool capable of affecting broad regions of the atmosphere, for better or worse. Also, the operator can receive an overcharge, or dor contamination in their body which can bring on great sickness, or exacerbate latent or chronic aspects of existing characterological armoring. While therapy certainly reduces these tendencies, it is not an absolute guarantee either. Cosmic orgone engineering with a cloudbuster places one in a highly charged environment which can stimulate energy-overcharge and emotional flare-ups. For these and other reasons, cloudbusting must be carried out in a perceptively clear and emotionally clean manner, with cooperative oversight by other skilled workers in a spirit of scientific open critique and cooperation.

Rational Versus Irrational Use of a Cloudbuster

Cloudbusting must never become a tool for "weather modification" per se, for manipulating or forcing the weather to do this or that. This concept of "modification" is as foreign to cloudbusting as "rape" is to a loving sexuality. The cloudbuster is simply a help to nature, an assist, only to be used at the right time and place, when the natural process of atmospheric pulsation is blocked, and stagnation sets in. It is only used to remove the "obstacle in the way" of natural functioning, to restore the natural, self-regulatory functions of atmospheric pulsation. The ultimate repository of the cloudbuster will be, perhaps a thousand years from now, in a display within some grand museum, after the crises of population, pollution, and atmospheric stagnation have been overcome, and world's deserts have been made green, or at least stabilized and pushed back to their present core regions.

To accomplish this goal, rational cloudbusting efforts, and centers where orgonomic education takes place, must discriminate among candidates for cloudbusting, avoiding at all costs the pitfalls of political or dogmatic positions. It is important to recognize that at least part of the increased interest in cloudbusting is derived from a recognition of the growing environmental deterioration, and increasing drought and desertification. Many people are attracted to Reich and cloudbusting solely due to a rational, honest feeling and desire to do something helpful and constructive. Each individual I have had approach me for information regarding cloudbusting has presented a unique set of circumstances which could only be evaluated on an individual basis. These sources of interest can be either rational or irrational. Some examples of a rational interest in cloudbusting might include:

* A health professional who notes the negative influences of certain weather conditions upon the health of patients, or upon the behavior of society at large.

* A farmer or agricultural scientist who notes the devastation of drought upon the landscape.

* A contactful individual who is personally distressed by recurring episodes of atmospheric stagnation and air pollution.

* A researcher who wishes to better understand the dynamics of the atmospheric ocean.

Obviously, not all of the above persons should go out and build or use a cloudbuster, but the sources of their interest are rational. They may simply be unaware of the potential effects and range of influence of the instrument, or be ignorant of the personal hazards involved. Hence, these individuals are encouraged to engage in as much preliminary work as is possible while another person with more experience and training undertakes to remedy the atmospheric problem in their area. Specific proposals for training of cloudbuster operators are given below.

Now, let's talk a bit more about the irrational use of the cloudbuster. Examples of this are all too common today. In the United States, we have people who build cloudbusters, develop their own "theory" on how it functions, throw away Reich's scientifically-developed findings (but perhaps, keeping his name attached to their ideas, for "credibility") and in general make a nuisance of themselves. Most of these people are harmless, but others do damage by creating drought, or even very severe storms. A few examples include:

1) Persons who, without ever doing any substantive preliminary reading, experimentation, or other work in orgone biophysics, build a cloudbuster and begin using it, in secret, avoiding contact with other researchers. This aspect of secretiveness and hiding is a dead give-away for irrational motives.

2) Persons with glaring characterological armoring who consistently refuse to undertake therapy, to include contactless, narcissistic and exhibitionistic characters, mystics wanting to "make contact with god", to "drive away evil demons", or impotent characters wanting to prove their potency, etc.

3) Persons who use, advocate, or imply the benefits of drugs: pill- heads, pot-heads, psychedelic users, and alcoholics.

4) Persons who wish to learn the technique solely for personal economic gain, to "make a million...".

5) Persons who wish to "save the world" through loud grandstanding techniques, calling great attention to themselves, emphasizing the "need" to loudly expose the "government conspiracy", the "dor-menace", "ufo menace", "chemtrail menace", or whatever menace, sometimes singlehandedly but also sometimes with larger groups of equally ignorant, frightened and/or aggressive-sadistic people, without much knowledge or capacity to receive even the slightest constructive criticism.

6) Persons who, without a shred of evidence, claim to have "advanced beyond Reich" in their understanding of how Nature and the cloudbuster works. This includes all those people who attempt, solely by empty declarations and wishful leaps, to merge Reich's findings into the mystical, unproven theories of Rudolph Steiner, or into the fascistic antisexual cult of "Saint Germaine", or who, without any evidence or factual discussion, proclaim the cloudbuster to be a "particle sink", "electromagnetic projector", or whatever.

Anyone exhibiting the above characteristics is a poor candidate for training or working with the cloudbuster. There are, unfortunately, a number of cases where such individuals have built cloudbusters to the greater or lesser detriment of themselves and their surrounding communities. Some more specific examples are:

7) A young fellow in Canada built and erected a large cloudbuster. He later left town, leaving the apparatus operating, haphazardly pointing to the sky. Several months went by without rains. The cloudbuster was later discovered by accident, by other persons who knew about the dangers and dismantled it. Rains resumed shortly thereafter.

8) A man in California built a cloudbuster and went about making demonstrations, claiming the powers of god.

9) Another man in California undertook operations with a modified cloudbuster, which he called a "chemical ether generator", to bring rains during the dry season. He rejected Reich's theory on the orgone energy, and the role of atmospheric stagnation and dor in blocking rains. Through improper operational techniques, he built up a large orgone-energy potential in an area characterized by stagnant, desert conditions. This predictably triggered a strong electrical storm, and six people were struck by lightning. Nonetheless, he was still very pleased with the results of the operation. He did the same thing a few years later, bringing a major coastal storm to Southern California, which did a lot of damage and killed a few people. This same man earlier wrote a book largely focused upon the cloudbuster, in which he claimed that all the problems of the world were the doings of "evil beings" in other dimensions, and alluded to the use of LSD.

10) A young man in Ireland built a cloudbuster and operated it while in a "trance state". Major devastating coastal storm occurred; boats were sunk and people were killed. The man later circulated a "newsletter", in which he bragged about his role in it all, and urged people to build cloudbusters and point them at nuclear power plants.

11) A skeptical classical scientist, reading only one or two articles, constructed a cloudbuster in his backyard. He aimed the unit at the sky and left town for a week. Persisting, heavy rains developed thereafter, bringing a flood, for which he denied responsibility. He later "souped up" the cloudbuster by adding high frequency electricity to it, but still failed to note any instant miracles. He finally lost interest, proclaiming the cloudbuster to be ineffective.

12) A mystic who communicated with spirits erected a cloudbuster and claimed great benefit to his local area. Climate charts subsequently indicated the onset of drought conditions in his area. He later published an article in which Reich's theory was abandoned in favor of Steiner's "four ethers".

13) A man in the northeast USA concocted various schemes to make money or attract national attention through cloudbusting. Responsible workers refused to have anything to do with him. He became very impatient and angry, and burglarized two orgone research facilities, stealing documents and other items. After being caught and sentenced to jail, he reported several orgone therapists to the Food and Drug Administration, saying they used the orgone accumulator on their patients. FDA officials began visiting and harassing various orgone therapists in the Northeast. Later, he secretly helped a long-time enemy of Reich to write a horrible magazine article, which branded Reich a lunatic.

14) Another man meditated while using some kind of "cloudbuster", dutifully reporting his "feelings" and observations to government officials, who dismissed him and everyone else working with the cloudbuster as a crackpot.

15) Another mystic in the southeastern USA, skeptical about the cloudbuster, built one and generated a huge thunderstorm with a funnel cloud. In a panic, he destroyed the instrument. After his death, his wife began selling ineffective "cloudbusters" to desperate farmers, for thousands of dollars.

16) A man wrote a book with a chapter devoted to Reich and cloudbusting. In it, he claimed Reich was wrong about the orgone, that the cloudbuster really was a "particle sink", that it taps a "chemical ether", and works on the basis of one's "consciousness". His book stimulated a lot of people to go out and build cloudbusters, without any attempt to study the question seriously. His book also claimed, without any credible evidence or proof, that you could run a car off of orgone energy by attaching an orgone accumulator to the air intake of the carbeurator. Dozens of people tried this and, predictably, when it did not work, they began to question "Reich's work".

17) A farmer in Maryland, during a major drought affecting the entire Northeast USA, writes to me: "I am part of a group which has built 60 cloudbusters in the region. I have build four cloudbusters on my land, and I've left them running for several months, but so far the rain has not come. Can you please inform me what I might be doing wrong?" When informed to take them down, as he is overcharging the atmosphere and making the drought worse, his only reply is silence.

This list on irrational activities can be closed with the following example: There are today some individuals who have made "cloudbusters" (sometimes called "chembusters" - click for more info) which are of a slightly different design from those of Reich, solely for the claimed purpose of "eliminating chemtrails". They believe the US government is deliberately spraying toxic chemicals into populated areas, and this is the reason for people's ill health. While the issue of toxic chemicals from jet aircraft exhaust, possible cloudseeding experiments, and air pollution in general is certainly an important subject requiring critical analysis, the accusations made by some in these groups go well beyond such a simple interpretation, and border into blatently psychotic territory: Accusations are made that "shape-shifting reptilian" aliens from outer space, and "evil entities" from other-worldly dimensions, have "taken control" over highly-placed persons in the government and military, and that they are now working, in conspiracy with the United Nations, to poison the citizens of the USA. Some of the impuse in this direction comes from followers of the Saint Germaine cult, while others are rooted in the "patriot movement". One could ignore these people, except for the fact that its leadership has convinced them to construct these cloudbuster-chembuster type devices, for the claimed purpose of "repulsing evil entities", or "dissipating chem-trails" -- in the latter case, the aim is to dissipate the contrails of jet aircraft. Perhaps a hundred or more of the "chem-trail-busters" are already constructed, mostly in the USA and a few overseas locations, with a growing number of enthusiasts. According to Reich's findings, however, the presence of well-formed jet contrails is a general indicator of a healthy cloud-forming atmosphere. The advocates of the "chem-trail" theory, however, "know better" than poor old stupid Reich and his followers; they consider jet contrails to be "bad", or evidence of aliens and demons, or treasonous government and military people trying to poison the countryside. Consequently, the "chem-trail-busters" are set up and pointed into the atmosphere on a permanent basis, month after month. The advocates of this madness claim, with much enthusiasm on a special "cloudbuster" email group, how the clouds dissipate over their property, and sometimes how larger thunderstorm complexes were "deflected" or dissipated. Consequently, it appears the modified "chem-busters" do have some kind of atmospheric effects. We currently have no clear certainty about what the long-term atmospheric effects will be from all of this, but assuredly it will not be a good thing, and will only add to broader atmospheric chaos. The "chem-trail-buster" network began in the Pacific Northwest in late 2000, for example, which is roughly correlated with the onset of a larger drought pattern across this same region. Much is not known, to be too definitive at this point, but the danger is clearly there. The leader of this group -- who also sells "Holy Hand Grenades" and other devices to exorcize demons from inside the home -- was informed of the dangers, but dismissed them with arrogant contempt.

As a general rule, enormous hatred is provoked from these individuals when responsible cloudbuster operators try to speak with them and get them to stop or change what they are doing. Experience shows, luckily, that these irrational individuals eventually run from the work and, assuming they do have the sustained energy to actually build and use a cloudbuster, will eventually make themselves sick, and run from the work. Any program of cooperative work and learning exchange is irritating to such individuals, and one usually spots them right off. Their history is one of secrecy, behind-the-scenes maneuvering, public grandstanding and politicking, alliance with the enemies of orgonomy, and slander of rational work efforts. They accomplish nothing of value, but they do great damage by making it nearly impossible for rational efforts focused upon Reich's work to function in the larger society. They actually increase the general level of atmospheric chaos, sometimes to the point where people are killed and great property damage is incurred.

The Question of Operational Theory

We can start this discussion, about theory, by acknowledging there are many things we do not know about Nature and the Universe, and about the orgone energy and cloudbusting as well. Consequently, there always is a rational interest to explore new theoretical approaches which might be more clarifying, and offer something new. However, this does not mean throwing overboard what is already well-known and established, nor does it give anyone license to claim, without evidence, that they instantly "know", without having done any serious work at all, so much more than what has already been established by the hard and patient work of others. Reich was clear, not only about the properties of the orgone energy itself, but also about the kinds of materials which interacted with orgone in a good way, and those which reacted in a toxic manner (ie., copper or aluminum are not healthy). His discussions on the life-energetic properties and behavior of the atmosphere, its relationship to cloud formations and weather, on the cloudbuster's operational mechanism, and on self-regulatory orgone energy functions, are carefully followed by everyone who has any kind of beneficial success with the apparatus. The more serious and dedicated persons surely have very large questions about the orgone energy itself, how it relates to the larger cosmic questions of life, love, and human feeling of unity with the cosmos. Reich also discussed these issues, and had many serious open questions. But they were specific questions on specific issues, and never stood as any kind of standing point for the aggressive dismissal of everything else that was known and established.

A few individuals who have undertaken cloudbusting in an irrational, untrained, and ill-prepared manner, are most emphatic in their desire to substitute their own theory for Reich's regarding the cloudbuster's functioning. For years they may have been working with electromagnetic energy, radionics machinery, homeopathic medicine, or various other "subtle energy" phenomena, often without much success at demonstrating any kind of life-positive effect upon natural processes. Or they are students of oriental or metaphysical/religious philosophies which accept the existence of some form of "life energy", but not anything which governs our character structure and sexuality in the manner described by Reich (ie, they are often antisexual celibates, following the life-negative dictations of one or another guru, and consider life-energy to be something separate from, and subordinated to an other-worldly "spirituality".)

Then they build an orgone accumulator, or a cloudbusting instrument, and observe some kind of powerful biological or atmospheric response, which is greater than anything they have previously experienced. But this causes much confusion, because it casts doubt upon their own relatively ineffectual theories and philosophies, to which they strongly adhere for emotional reasons. Consequently, in such cases, Reich's inventions may be captured into their religious theology with a "reinterpretation" which discards the more socially-difficult aspects. Or, to preserve their dedicated interest in quantum mechanics or "twelve-dimensional reality" (Etc.) orgone energy is discarded in favor of abstract mathematics and invisible particles. In either case, Reich's ideas are confusedly picked at, diced up, and made into a casserole with other bits and pieces of every other kind of imaginable speculation! What indigestion!

The question of theory is really more important than most people recognize. Consider the following analogy: One man designs and builds a large suspension bridge according to the experimentally tested strengths of steel and concrete. Another man designs and builds a suspension bridge using a design and materials suggested to him in a drug hallucination, or from numerological interpretations of a Bible passage. Now, if I gave you the keys to a 20 ton truck, which bridge would you want to drive over? Which bridge would you want a school bus carrying your children to drive over? There is no question that you would not want to take a risk with the bridge built through "divine revelation". This is what the science of engineering is all about, and we have necessary laws and regulations to make sure bridges are build according to experimentally determined Natural Law, and not according to one or another person's conjured-up speculations. Now, a person could speculate about a new bridge design which was truly revolutionary, but then we would want to see it tested first, before being put into use. The same is true with aircraft design. Nobody wants to fly in a jet that has not been properly tested. Even so, we still get bridges and jets with both design and construction flaws. But these can be recognized as such and, when uncovered, quickly corrected. Let's now take the example of cloudbusting.

A lot of people are concerned about drought, particularly farmers. But many are distressed by Reich's writings on sexual matters, and on matters regarding character structure. Or they have been using radionics machines, or have been reading Steiner, and are used to speaking in very vague terms, about "vibration energy", the "ethers", and so on. To the unstudied person, Reich's "orgone" may appear likewise vague, but it is not really. It is a very specific term attached to a class of phenomena which have been empirically, or experimentally derived. It is a ubiquitous energy, filling all space, pulsatile (expanding and contracting), water-attracting, self-attracting, absorbed by non-metals, and reflected by metals. It is the medium though which electromagnetic excitations are transmitted, but is not the excitation itself. It can absorb electromagnetic energy, and attenuate it. These are very specific details, for which specific experimental proofs have been developed. Those who wish to be rid of Reich's theory usually first dismiss the energetic aspects of sexuality and character, followed by difficult, but necessary concepts such as oranur (over-excited, agitated orgone) and dor (stagnant, or dead orgone). The cloudbuster becomes a "particle sink" and the orgone, one of the "ethers". By doing this, a cloudbuster operator no longer needs to be a contactful and perceptive individual, capable of gut-level sensation of the atmospheric energy. Indeed, the atmospheric energy, by virtue of intellectual slight-of-hand, is made vague and intangible, beyond the senses. Oranur and dor therefore don't matter anymore, and Reich's findings about the energy streams in the upper atmosphere, well, who cares! So out into the fields they march, beating a drum, and waving cloudbuster tubes about in a phallic manner, making grand connection with the cosmos! And all the while, they bad-mouth those who at great personal sacrifice and risk, preserved and extended Reich's works over the last 50 years! I previously outlined a number of examples of the results of this kind of irrational approach.

Like the bridge built upon questionable designs, the improperly performed cloudbusting operation yields either no result, or an atmospheric disaster! In many cases, these people state "my operations brought good rain here, when all around it was dry". Aside from the fact that they don't corroborate their observations with weather data, they are ignorant of the fact that an improperly used cloudbuster can stimulate widespread expansion and aridity, with a small localized center of slightly more humid conditions near, and only near, the working cloudbuster. In short, while they may have created the slight increase in moisture at the one place, they likely stimulated an intensification of more widespread drought conditions. This latter danger appears particularly acute where cloudbusters are used continually, for long periods without a break. Often, out of sheer frustration with a drought, and from lack of immediately apparent atmospheric reactions to the cloudbuster, the errant operator will continue working the instrument, day after day after day, without a break, attempting to squeeze a drop or two of moisture from what appears to be a stubborn, unrelenting atmosphere. In this case, the operator wants to "make" the overcharged atmosphere contract and rain, but the continual operations only add to the excitation and overcharge. There are techniques which can be successfully, and quickly used in such a situation, but what happens when you ask these people to try a different approach, to examine more closely what they are doing? From experience, I know. You get an outburst of self-righteous anger! "How dare you question our motives or techniques!" "We are saving this area from the drought", "Our work has driven away the chemtrails" they say, when the facts, derived from the weather maps and climatology of the region, speak otherwise.

Another example of the danger of improper operational technique, derived from a contemptuous dismissal of Reich's orgone theory, shows itself when individuals attempt cloudbusting in droughty or desert regions, which are charged with dorish, immobile, stagnant energy. One fellow designed a "better" cloudbuster by eliminating certain essentials from Reich's design. Using only the known principle of atmospheric excitation, which he falsely claimed as his own discovery, he went about creating large energy potentials in the dry areas of Southern California. So, in the midst of all that stagnation, large storm potentials appeared, and, predictably, the storms behaved furiously, much in the manner of a wild elephant caught in a trap. The storms raged, and many people were hurt or killed. The man claimed to be working with a superior theory, but in reality was working with a patently wrong, mystical theory. His theory of atmospheric functioning, like the bridge built upon faulty principles, did not work properly. There is, in my view, no excuse for this kind of arrogant, dangerous behavior.

As a society we do not allow untrained individuals to jump into the pilot seat of a 747 aircraft, nor hand over the controls of an oil tanker or aircraft carrier to just anybody who "wants" to do it. We require training, education, and specific physical characteristics necessary for safely doing the job. Today, there are places where one can go to obtain the necessary counseling, therapy, education, and training in cloudbusting. Everyone doing good, rational, and effective work with the cloudbuster places great emphasis on emotional contact and training. Just as a pilot must have good eyesight, a good cloudbuster operator must be emotionally fluid, and this means, for most people, orgone therapy. So today we observe, without exception, that the decent, rational people interested in cloudbusting undertake this therapy, educate themselves, and apprentice in a careful, step-by-step manner, which requires commitment and years of dedicated work. If the real motivations for cloudbusting are clean and honest, with a desire to be genuinely helpful, the therapy will only reinforce those feelings, and make the individual feel more alive and perceptive. If not, the therapy will clarify one's limitations, or the lack of necessity for doing the weather work, or even unmask other hidden motivations. Unfortunately, the worst of the irresponsible cloudbuster operators run from therapy, and from contact with anyone who urges them to undertake it, as a means of hiding their sadism and hatred of nature, and to preserve their facade.

Such individuals are a danger to themselves and to the larger community in which they live, and must firmly be referred to the therapist's couch as an absolute prerequisite for any transfer of information or knowledge to take place. And if they persist in "cloudbusting", and continue to bring severe damaging effects upon the surrounding communities, they must be isolated from all support and association with rational efforts, and be pointed out to the appropriate legal authorities. The challenge here is for rational efforts to develop a system of documentation and evaluation that will provide proof of the cloudbuster's influence, and of the biophysical character of the orgone energy, in a form that can be understood by any open-minded scientist.

Orgonomy must break with the "tradition" of armored science, wherein so many potentially good discoveries are turned into weapons for the further destruction of life and nature. In this regard, the larger scientific community cannot be blamed, for they do not yet take Reich's energetic theories seriously. The major damage being done with the cloudbuster today is from the various contactless mystics and secret nature-haters, who, without a shred of evidence, claim great "benefits" from their atmospheric meddling. We presently do not know if this situation will diminish, or intensify when the larger community of classical scientists rediscover Reich's works. It is a major problem of human characterology, which can be overcome only by strongly resisting and countering any attempts to remove cloudbusting from the general body of orgonomic theory, out of which it developed. Indeed, every individual I have met who has done decent and helpful work with a cloudbuster has previously undertaken to clean up their own character structure as a necessary first-step. The men and women who will do this work, both now and in the future, must be an exceptional lot, responsible, contactful people, capable of deep emotional expression, love relationships, and also capable of grappling with important concepts and demanding work responsibilities. They must have a stick-to-it attitude based upon love, work, and knowledge, and do their very best to be well educated on important environmental and scientific issues. They must not shrink from either receiving, or giving rational constructive criticism.

Negative Biophysical Effects on Cloudbuster Operators

There are other reasons to insist upon good training and therapy for cloudbuster operators. The biophysical effects of the cloudbuster upon the operator's own organism can potentially be mildly sickening (headaches, nausea, sinusitus, etc.) or even life-threatening. This real danger has often been dismissed by various armored persons who were incapable of feeling the movement of the life energy within their own body, and who could not feel or see it move in the atmosphere. As a result, many people have been made sick. However, accidents can also occur even when the cloudbuster operator is skilled, and precautions are taken. For the reasons given here, cloudbuster operators must learn about the mechanisms governing atmospheric charge, and also techniques for dissipating an overcharge within their own organism, and for protecting themselves. For example:

1) Several of Reich's assistants were immobilized and greatly sickened by the field effects surrounding his laboratory during the oranur experiment. Later on, similar reactions occurred in the surroundings of operating cloudbusters, particularly during desert and drought operations.

2) A man using a cloudbuster in a California desert touched the pipes with his bare hands. He was paralyzed on one side of his body, and never completely recovered.

3) A cloudbuster operator developed a walnut-sized tumor one day after handling a cloudbuster during a drought. The tumor was eventually eliminated through orgonomic first-aid, involving therapy, use of the accumulator, dor-buster, and detoxification techniques.

4) A medical doctor in Germany used a medical dor-buster on his patients for many years. The apparatus resembles a minature cloudbuster, and functions similarly. He developed a paralysis in the arm he used to work the apparatus, which later spread to his shoulder and the side of his face, after which he died.

5) A man who used a manually operated cloudbuster for many years in droughty situations became quite ill, in spite of many precautions. He eventually developed scleroderma and cancer, which killed him.

6) Other cloudbuster operators have been made very ill from standing too close to the instrument. The biological effects of overcharge, and of what Reich called dor-sickness, have included high fever, muscle cramps, nausea, and diarrhea. Severe skin rashes, hives, and "flu" symptoms have also been observed. Reich noted, the effects of the toxic field around the cloudbuster tends to hit a person at their weakest spot, causing old health problems to flare-up.

Recommended Cloudbuster Operator Education and Training

The above facts speak for themselves. The responsibility for the rational development of cosmic orgone engineering now largely rests upon the shoulders of those who have continued to work with and research the technique in an open way, publishing the results of their experimental research. Individuals involved in irrational efforts also bear the responsibility for their actions, which, because of narcissistic bragging and loose talk, eventually do come to the light of day. An informal procedure is presently in place whereby individuals harboring irrational motivations are strictly excluded from the work, irrespective of their academic degrees, political standing, or economic power. An informal procedure also is presently in place to assist those rational, responsible individuals whose character and work, and the environmental conditions in which they live, dictate a need to know more about cloudbusting. It is anticipated that these informal procedures will become more formalized in the future, in a work-democratic manner, when the needs of the work require it. Presently there are around a dozen or so well-trained, senior cloudbusting operators, and their apprentices, who work on these questions in an open, responsible, and cooperative manner.

The following outline covers the kind of preliminary work which all candidates for cloudbusting should undertake. The ideas presented here are proposed for the younger student and would necessarily be tailored where a person's prior work and experience is firmly established. For more information on any of these points, or for specific information on courses and workshops, and the names of qualified orgone therapists, contact the Orgone Biophysical Research Laboratory, at the address given below.

I. Orgone Therapy: with a skilled and qualified therapist. This will bring the candidate into contact with any buried feelings or hidden characterological tendencies; the therapy will soften and eliminate biophysical, characterological armoring, deepen the respiration, and make the individual more alive and contactful.

II. Formal Orgonomic Coursework:

A. Lab Seminars and Workshops: on the bions, cancer biopathy, and general orgone biophysics.
B. University Courses: on the "Life and Work of Wilhelm Reich",where offered.
C. Tour of the Wilhelm Reich Museum: to get a feel for the man and his times.
III. Traditional Education:
Undergraduate and/or graduate-level studies in the traditional sciences, apart from any study of orgonomy. The major topic of study would be of the student's choosing, but should include coursework in Climatology, Meteorology, Earth Science, Physical Geography, Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Chemistry, Astronomy, and Physics. Exceptional scholarship of an interdisciplinary nature is strongly encouraged. Knowledge of classical findings on atmospheric circulation, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, cloud dynamics, atmospheric electricity, and so forth would be absolutely essential. Courses on the methods and history of science are also encouraged.

IV. Independent Study and Research in Orgonomy:

A. Readings in orgonomy.

1. Students should develop or gain access to a complete library of orgonomic literature, to include all current and back issues of:
- International Journal of Sex-Economy and Orgone Research
- The Orgone Energy Bulletin
- Cosmic Orgone Engineering
- Orgonomic Medicine
- The Journal of Orgonomy
- Annals, Institute for Orgonomic Science
- Pulse of the Planet
2. Subscriptions should also be maintained for a variety of scientific, environmental, and weather-oriented periodicals, so that the student will keep abreast of new developments.
3. All published works by Wilhelm Reich should be obtained and eventually read, to include those focusing upon both sex-economy and orgone biophysics.
4. A recommended reading list should be developed, to include works on orgonomy by other authors, as well as pertinent works in other fields of research.

B. Experimental Studies and Research.

1. Students should develop their own small laboratory, or gain access to one. Student should develop a working relationship or correspondence with other orgonomic researchers familiar with the experiments they are undertaking, for critical review, feedback, and response to questions.
2. Students would have to develop a familiarity with the following devices and areas of orgonomic research:
- millivoltmeter.
- bion observations.
- naked eye and orgonoscope observations of atmospheric orgone energy.
- the orgone energy field meter; high-frequency coils.
- the orgone energy accumulator; start with small seed-chargers, and, environmental conditions permitting, progress to building larger multiple layer chargers, and human-sized units. Engage in all the biological and physical experimental proofs, to include the to-t test, the electroscopical tests, the water-evaporation suppression test, and so forth.
- the electroscope.
- observations of dor and oranur.
- the medical dor-buster.
V. Cosmic Orgone Engineering:

A. Students would engage in a systematic study and review of all the literature on cloudbusting, and the procedures used in all past cloudbusting operations, to understand the various situations which confronted operators in the past, and the solutions which were applied.
B. Under supervision, students might engage in small, short term experiments with single lengths of pipe, or a small array of short hollow tubes in the local atmosphere, much in the manner of a dor-buster.
C. Student Apprenticeship.

1. As assistant to a principal operator with greater experience.
2. As co-operator to other principal operators as the atmospheric need and occasion may arise.

D. Operator candidates would later engage in independent cloudbusting work, either in conjunction with established principal operators in a given region, or more independently in new areas.
E. Operator candidates would also evaluate the results of all operations, though use of National Weather Service weather data, satellite images, and field observations. Evaluations should also address the reasons for particular operational techniques employed, and, to the extent possible, the energetic basis of the original atmospheric problem.
F. Operator candidates would develop ongoing communication with other cloudbuster operators in more distant regions, so that each person has a general idea of research under way in different areas. More specific notification would be given when major operations were undertaken.
Every phase of the prior work outlined above would help to prepare the individual for skilled and effective use of the cloudbuster. For example, experiments with the bions, or orgone energy vesicles, yields evidence of energetic charge and movement at the micro-level, and bioenergetic phenomena that are correlated with the weather. Certain bionous forms, such as ameba and vorticella, often behave in a pulsatory, expansive-contractive, energetic manner, similar to what can be seen in a much slower form, with individual thunderstorms and larger weather systems. Likewise, cloudbusting candidates must also work with the orgone accumulator, to gain an organic feel for concentrated life energy, and an understanding of atmospheric pulsation, as seen in its thermal, electroscopical, and other properties. They must learn about what the concentrated energy in the accumulator can do to living creatures by running biological experiments, to see for themselves, and to obtain a gut level feeling for the energy as a real, physical phenomenon.

The cloudbusting candidate must also learn about contamination of the life energy through secondary energies, such as friction, electromagnetism, and nuclear energy. Observations should be made of highly excited orgone, or oranur conditions, and stagnant dead orgone, or dor conditions, by taking short trips to the desert, or to regions close to nuclear power facilities. Oranur and dor conditions may occur in the immediate vicinity of an operating cloudbuster, and these conditions are significant for both the safety and outcome of the operations, as well as for the operator's health. The cloudbusting candidate must also eventually work with the medical dor-buster, which is a small, laboratory-sized "cloudbuster", to develop a feel for this apparatus, and gain a working knowledge of its practical applications. This apparatus is also necessary for orgonomic first-aid, which may be needed during cloudbusting operations to keep one's own organism alive and moving, particularly in the face of stagnant, dorish conditions.

The merely curious individual would likely be satisfied by the understandings gained from this preliminary work, and leave it at that, assuming any atmospheric problems in their area are relieved. However, the preliminary work may heighten their interest and accentuate the need to deal with an unresolved atmospheric problem, particularly when therapy melts the armor, and makes them more sensitive. If the preliminary work has been responsibly undertaken, if the individual gains an appreciation, functional grasp, and feeling for the atmospheric orgone energy, and if they have displayed the seriousness and responsibility of character vital to such work, then a move into the active learning and apprenticeship during actual cloudbusting operations might be justified. Such individuals must, of course, display a-priori a willingness to learn and work cooperatively with other researchers in the field of orgone biophysics, particularly those already working with a cloudbuster in a given region.

For the younger individual, this preliminary work might be performed simultaneous to a traditional university education in the classical sciences. It is a worthwhile goal to possess the traditional degree certificates by which scientific work is generally evaluated in this era. Orgonomic education, however, should maintain an emphasis of self- regulated independent study. For the older individual, a program of independent study might substitute for formal university education. Indeed, many naturalists and artists have maintained a greater feeling for, and contact with life and nature than the typical university professor or graduate, and possession of this feeling for life is more important for successful cloudbusting operations than any university degree. There is also the problem inherent in obtaining a university education, in that -- depending upon the specific degree program and institution -- it may tend to emotionally dry one up, push one towards an increasingly intellectual approach to life and nature, and thereby increase one's degree of armoring. This is particularly so where the student must hide their functional interests in the life energy, due to hostile prejudice on the part of professors. For those who choose the university approach, the need for therapy may become all the more acute.

We do not offer an educational program in "cloudbusting" per se, as we do not wish to attract persons who otherwise would not have been drawn to the work, eg., those incapable of proceeding in a committed, responsible, cooperative and self-regulated manner. Nor do we offer a program of "cloudbuster education" which is set apart from general orgonomic research. It is desired to attract the cooperative interest of workers whose work has prompted their interest in cloudbusting. A step-by-step approach is necessary, handled at each student's own pace, to gradually introduce them to the atmospheric work -- first as student, then assistant, and later as co-worker. It is expected that many students will not continue with the atmospheric work, but will become fascinated with the energetic basis of the emotions, with orgone therapy, with the bions, cancer research, the accumulator, or the orgone motor, all the various fantastic discoveries of the genius, Wilhelm Reich. Hence, the educational program outlined here is one of general orgonomy, of which the atmospheric work is but a subset.

Regarding evaluation of students, instead of written examinations, which are the hallmark of the armored academic institutions, independent study and apprenticeship are substituted. No one should ever be qualified or disqualified regarding cloudbusting on the basis of mechanical memorization and regurgitation upon exams! The livelier, more contactful students may be allergic to such approaches anyhow, and examination systems tend to encourage all the wrong kinds of behaviors. Heavens forbid that cloudbuster operators of the future would be certified by only answering questions on an exam! Orgonomic education must remain a pleasurable undertaking for both educators and students. Evaluations would occur on an informal, personal basis, from the student's contacts with established orgonomic educators, and by periodic reports written by the students covering various topics, and relating their progress in study and experiment. The go-at-your-own-pace structuring of A.S. Neill's Summerhill School is good design to copy. Mystical and mechanistic individuals, we expect, will be weeded out in any program emphasizing careful observation, experiment, emotional contactfulness, and sustained work. They will simply not be capable of functioning in such a lively atmosphere. And here is the most important guarantee for rational development of cloudbusting: the creation of a cooperative and responsible working atmosphere in which the emotional plague simply cannot function.

If You Can't Do Cloudbusting Yourself, What Can You Do?

The Orgone Biophysical Research Laboratory, in cooperation other responsible individuals and organizations, has developed a Drought Abatement Outreach Program, undertaken field expeditions in the USA and overseas, bringing trained and skilled cloudbuster operators and the necessary equipment, to areas suffering from drought. The Laboratory also has developed a Desert Greening Program, successfully demonstrating (in Israel, Namibia and East Africa) that harsh desert areas can also be greened, with a halt to their prior rates of degradation and spreading. If you require assistance with such an atmospheric problem, you can directly contact the Laboratory for details. There are financial costs involved, but on occasion, resources may already be available for dealing with your situation, and only help with logistics and information will be required.

Alternatively, if you are just learning about orgonomy, and still have a fascination with the cloudbuster, then get on track with the recommendations given above. Learn who the responsible workers are in orgonomy, and make contact with them; obtain and follow their advice regarding your own individual situation. Get in touch with qualified therapists in your area or elsewhere, and attend the various workshops and seminars focused upon orgonomy at OBRL; most importantly, read the works of Reich on both social and biophysical issues. Aside from Reich's books, his articles on orgone-biophysical topics are found in three different journals: International Journal of Sex-Economy and Orgone Research, Orgone Energy Bulletin, and CORE (Cosmic Orgone Engineering). Since Reich's death, other journals have continued to publish more recent research. Pulse of the Planet, the research report of this Laboratory, carries many articles on orgone biophysics and cloudbusting. Likewise, back issues of the Journal of Orgonomy and Annals of the Institute for Orgonomic Science also carry pertinent research articles and new findings. Detailed bibliographies and other materials, including Reich's works, are available either through mail order, or from your local library.

Aside from this, there are other things a person can do about the problems of atmospheric stagnation. These suggestions are long-term in nature, and do not require the presence of an actual drought before you can get started. Indeed, they require that you get involved beforehand. Remember, the atmosphere does not suffer from a chronic "lack of cloudbusting". It suffers from chronic abuse, from releases of toxic chemicals and pollutants, though contamination of streams and groundwater, through toxic dumping, deforestation, and from radioactive contamination. You can become involved by firstly making a change within your own sphere of influence, by working to help clean up the big mess we are in. Once you get started, you will be amazed at the number of interesting, lively people you will meet, who have similar long-term goals.

The first assignment I always gave my university students was to get a big brick. The second assignment was to throw that brick through the front of their television set, and begin devoting the TV watching time to something constructive towards their own life-goals, or for their home and family, or in their community. Americans spend about 50 hours per week watching the tube. This is insane. It is the mental equivalent of eating a steady diet of hot dogs and twinkies. Imagine what would happen if even a small percentage of people instead invested that TV-time educating themselves, or working on a constructive project in their own community. (Note 2002: I have softened somewhat on this point. Since the coming of cable and satellite television networks, the amount of "junk TV" has certainly increased, but it also provides many specialized channels with educational documentaries and programs, and competing 24-hour news programs which -- while often slanted -- do provide a "window to the world" in a manner never before seen in human history. Many documentaries by smaller companies and non-profit groups are also available on videocasettes and DVDs, with content not to be found on the networks, and there is so much new and important information coming to us by video and television, one could now easily overdose from valid educational programs. The Internet likewise poses this problem, of a lot of junk and misinformation, but also some incredible new materials not available elsewhere. Of course, none of this concern applies to those whose primary TV attraction is soap-operas or hysterical sport arena-games. Likewise with the Internet, where perhaps a third to a half of all web sites and usage is pornography. These sad facts underscore the sexual misery of ordinary people, and the flight into mysticism and illusion-gratification.) "Apathy" must be recognized for what it is: a very active, and not a passive social disorder, requiring the active censoring of information that would challenge one's world view, and "faith" in the status-quo supporting authority figures and social institutions of the sick social structure. Apathy is also a means by which people actively avoid taking responsibility for their own situation. Indeed, the political pundits and corporate giants thrive on the fact that so many people are stuck and immobile. They feel threatened whenever people become socially active in a meaningful way. Indeed, they promote the myth that a "good citizen" does hardly anything socially at all, except to give money to political parties, and throw switches in a voting booth every year or so! How naive! We must break out of these traps, and take responsibility for our situations, and for the consequences of our own, individual actions. Only by doing so can effective change be initiated. Here, for example, is a list of a things that need your direct support and participation. Add to or modify this list, according to your own interests:

1) Learn about methods for ecological farming. Stop using harsh pesticides and herbicides for both home and farming purposes. If you are a consumer, seek out and buy organic produce, or at least buy your goods from the farmer's market. Work with local and national environmental groups to halt irresponsible additives and nuclear irradiation of the food supply.

2) Learn energy conservation methods, and implement them in your own home. Build or buy a solar water heater. Investigate photovoltaic power for as many purposes as you can. Start buying rechargeable batteries for all your portable appliances. Buy only fuel-efficient cars, and support mass transit methods that will reduce dependence upon cars and imported oil.

3) Learn about alternative health care methods, and about holistic and preventative health care. Educate yourself about the emotional plague in Big Medicine, and about safe alternatives to it: home birth, midwifery, medicinal herbs, dietary treatments, vitamins and minerals, the orgone energy accumulator, and so forth.

4) Work with local environmental groups to secure clean air, and safe drinking water. Work to halt toxic dumping in your neighborhood, and to have existing anti-pollution laws enforced. Work to safeguard the next dozen generations against a legacy of radioactive waste, and halt the trend towards nuclear power. Work for rational restraint of nuclear weapons on Earth, and a ban on nuclear materials in space.

5) Recycle your newspapers, cardboard, cans and glass, where possible. Ask your local environmental groups about where to find these facilities. If a recycling center does not exist, establish one.

6) Promote all the above at your workplace, where possible, and urge your employer, or workers union champion these issues. If you have the energy to go into the political party system, push the grassroots workers and candidates to make these issues central to the party platforms. If they don't change parties.

7) Identify threatened wildlife habitats, and remnants of old-growth forest or native prairie in your local area, and work with others to protect them from development and exploitation. Make a personal commitment to plant at least a dozen trees each year, from now on, and encourage your children to do likewise. Make it a family activity. Remember, trees are nature's own "cloudbusters", working to self-regulate the atmosphere. When they are substantially cut down, weather problems develop.

8) Help to establish an alternative, non-authoritarian school in your local community, or to eliminate corporal punishment in the schools.

9) Volunteer your time to work in, or to establish a shelter for battered wives, or runaway and thrown-away children. Work to have your local hospitals reveal their infant mortality statistics, and help local midwives to set up legally secure, out-of-hospital birthing clinics.

10) Emphasize love, work and knowledge over politics, but do not shrink from attempting to institute social change in the political arena. Start at the grassroots, and not from the top downward. Remember that individual change always precedes community change.

11) Be on your toes to spot the emotional plague characters who will secretly try to defeat you in these efforts. Specifically watch out for those who want to "help" your cause, but who are always creating dissention and discord, and who rarely if ever do a bit of work, or expend any sweat. Also beware of the plague characters in the government or corporate power structure. Cheating, and back-stabbing, along with smiling-in-your-face deceit, are characteristic traits. Learn to smell these characters, and read Reich's analysis of the plague to get a better understanding of its mechanisms, and how to deal with it.

Obviously, no one individual could focus attention on but a small portion of the above list. However, there are already a lot of people working very hard on those very issues, and your first job would be to seek out like-minded people in your area, or to make contact with them in other areas via the mails. In order to accomplish the above goals, one must also find sources of information that cover topics beyond what comes over the TV and newspapers. The conventional information sources are highly controlled, with much pre-digested and even censored materials. They give a moment-by-moment discussion of global pathology, but rarely offer real solutions to problems. For example, the environment is today big in the "news", but this discovery by the popular media comes about 50 years late. And so too regarding the emphasis on "environment" by plague politicians, who raise the issue publicly in order to get votes, but work behind the scenes to give the exploiters and polluters whatever they want. You won't learn anything about such facts unless you join the various environmental groups, read their newsletters, and begin to network with like-minded people in your own community. You must seek out these alternative sources of information, in order to get the knowledge and tools you will need to make a meaningful change. Internet is now a big new source, but even here, there is much disinformation and confusion. Learning to "go to the source" where claims are made, to do independent fact-checking, becomes all the more important. Sometimes the conventional news media gets it right, sometimes the alternative media gets it right. Figuring out which one is the difficult part.

These are small things people can do, but they are vitally necessary, and do require commitment of time and resources. They are the only successful methods for promoting a vital and lively society, and a clean, natural environment. In short, take responsibility for your own situation, and start making your own contribution to the solution. If you start with your own circle of influence, the tasks won't appear so overwhelming. First yourself, next your immediate home environment and helps for your family and loved ones, next the neighborhood, and finally the "big picture". Think globally, but act locally. When possible, try to elect political leaders, at both the local and national level, who are aware of and support practical solutions that protect the life on the planet. Don't fall victim to plaguey reactionary or freedom-peddling talk. Pay more attention to what people do, and less to what they say. Work to save your own family, your friends, and your community from the mass insanity and deadly consequences of plague behavior, plague politics, and plague media. Do this and you will do more to initiate meaningful change than a thousand self-proclaimed "saviors".

Wilhelm Reich's Discoveries

About 25 years ago, I became intrigued with the writings of the late Dr. Wilhelm Reich on the controversial subjects of "biological energy" and his thesis that blocked emotions and sexual repression led to mental illness and neurosis. I met and studied with some of the scientists who had worked with Reich, experienced the orgone therapy Reich had developed, undertook simple experiments, and eventually became the first student at a mainstream American university to earn a Ph.D. for scientifically testing Reich's ideas.

For those who don't know, Reich was one of Freud's inner circle -- some say he was being groomed to take over leadership of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) -- but he was ultimately centrifuged out of that organization for his social reform and anti-Nazi work. Historians have since documented the general capitulation of German psychoanalysis to the Nazis, but not so Wilhelm Reich, an Austrian-Ukranian of Jewish background. Freud's early work strongly suggested emotions and sexuality were expressions of a tangible energetic "something", but it was Reich who provided the clearest evidence that the Freudian libido was a real energy, discharged during emotional expression and sexual orgasm. Parental or social punishments against the youthful expression of emotion, or of sexual love, led to internalized repression -- but this was accomplished only by literally tightening one's muscles, binding the energy down within the body and creating a powerful conflict of internal bioenergetic tension. If repression became chronic, the consequent chronic internal tension formed a neuro-muscular armoring (much like the metal armor of a Medieval knight) by which the individual protectively walled themself off from an outer world of painful experiences. Reich developed therapeutic methods to help people give up their emotional armor; but he also approached the problem from the social and political side of things, working to pass laws against child abuse, to give women equal rights and pay, and to make divorce and contraceptives more freely available. For this, he was severely attacked by the Nazis, who were in fact very extremist "moral majoritarians".

By the mid-1930s, Reich had been kicked out of the IPA, his books attacked and burned by the Nazis and German Communist Party. He fled to Denmark, and later to Scandinavia; while there, he undertook some of the first bioelectrical experiments on the subject of human sexuality and emotional expression. Reich's bioelectrical experiments proved that human emotion, sexual excitation and orgastic discharge were measurable phenomena. It was a breakthrough discovery in the field of human sexuality and psychology -- but the first of a series of discoveries that would increasingly put him at odds with the prevailing academic/scientific status quo of his time, and of the present time as well. Science of the 1930s was intolerant of open discussion of "orgasm", and Reich's books uncompromisingly focused upon such issues: The Function of the Orgasm, The Sexual Revolution, People in Trouble, and The Mass Psychology of Fascism are classics hardly mention even today.

Reich's later microscopical experiments with ameba would produce other breakthroughs in the biological sciences, in the discovery of the specific process of bionous decay of tissues, which lay at the basis of cancer cell formation. Reich's findings on cancer are directly observable, and not just some speculative theory -- his observations on pre-cancerous cellular processes significantly predated those of George Papanicolaou (of "Pap-test" fame), and Reich believed his scientific priority had in fact been stolen. Unlike conventional medicine, Reich's discovery also revealed the role of emotional-sexual energy in the psychosomatic process. What at first appeared to be only "bioelectricity" was later clarified by Reich as a much more powerful bioenergetic force -- a form of life-energy at work within living organisms, expressing itself as emotion and sexuality, but also directly observable in the microscope as a bluish-glowing field around living blood cells and other substances. This bluish-glowing energy, which he eventually called orgone energy (to preserve its relationship with living processes), was later observed as a blue-glowing aura-like phenomenon around organisms, trees and even mountain ranges. The blue orgone also exists in a free form within the atmosphere -- Reich wrote about an "envelope" of blue-glowing energy surrounding the Earth long before the first satellite photos confirmed it.

Orgone energy in the atmosphere was a physical phenomenon similar to the older ideas of "vital force" and "aether" combined. It behaves lawfully, fills all space, expands and contracts in pulsatory rhythm, and interacts differently with different material substances: every kind of matter appears to attract the orgone, but at different rates of speed. Water strongly attracts the orgone, or life-energy, giving rise to the phenomenon of living water (described classically as "activated" or "structured" water) which is fundamental to life processes, and to the Earth's weather as well. Orgone was also demonstrated in high vacuum (as with "zero-point" vacuum fluctuation, etc.) proving it filled all space much as a cosmic aether. Reich's experiments in these directions led to even more controversy: new methods for ending drought and greening deserts, and new approaches to the problem of nuclear waste detoxification. His experiments suggested a new source of pollution-free energy, which some day might propel humankind to the stars. Fantastic? Sure, but solidly founded upon new experimental tests and observations in the best tradition of the natural sciences.

During the course of Reich's investigations, he developed a special metal-lined enclosure which attracted a high charge of orgone energy inside itself, directly from the atmosphere: the orgone energy accumulator . The orgone accumulator was proven to charge seeds and increase garden plant growth, speed the healing of burns and cuts, and there are a number of physical experiments which demonstrate anomalous phenomena inside the accumulator. Reich observed that certain kinds of low-energy illness, such as cancer, would symptomatically yield to careful application of the orgone accumulator. After he moved to the USA, he treated people experimentally with his combined emotional/orgone-energetic approach. Within a few years, however, he was attacked by US Food and Drug Administration, which was at that time (1955) in an all-out "war" against natural healing methods (the repression of natural healing methods has always been a major agenda of the FDA). The FDA obtained a court injunction which ordered the banning and burning of Reich's books -- any book containing the forbidden word "orgone" was ordered destroyed, even his classics on human sexuality which only mentioned orgone energy in the preface! The FDA factually burned Reich's books and journals on several occasions (most recently in 1962), while Reich was given a 2-year jail sentence for a misdemeanor technicality, dying in prison in 1957. The FDA's attack against Reich constituted a fraud upon the courts and the American people, and the Reich legal case continues to overshadow the better-known Scopes Monkey Trial in constitutional significance, in that an American court authorized the burning of scholarly books and the jailing of scientists for maintaining unorthodox viewpoints.

Today, through the non-profit Orgone Biophysical Research Laboratory (OBRL), Reich's original discoveries are preserved, and presented in summer educational laboratory seminars. This year, several are offered, to include:

In particular, we welcome younger scientists and students to take an open-minded look at this important body of discovery. In addition, there are several books available on these subjects: The Orgone Accumulator Handbook, and my latest title Saharasia: The 4000 BCE Origins of Child-Abuse, Sex-Repression, Warfare and Social Violence In the Deserts of the Old World. This latter work was a 7-year global cross-cultural research project which evaluated Reich's sex-economic hypothesis of human behavior, demonstrating the existence of uniformly peaceful human social conditions prior to c.4000 BCE ... but that discussion must wait for another time.
