Im not sure if any of you remember my post about discovering a large amphibian species in a Texas stream, but the feds have taken notice.Yesterday we returned to the hunting lease(our private lease), only to find a truck with government plates and"Department of Natural Resources" on the side.The truck was white in color, had a box in the back which looked like a cage perhaps, and had a lift in the bed of the truck.Incidently, the trim level on the truck was of the highest quality, this f 150 pickup was decked out in the finest leather,and was loaded.Topographical maps lay on the seat.Well, we tracked him in the soft, sandy loam, and his tracks led directly to where we discovered the amphibian eggs.He was running from us!I guess it was the shotguns me and my young son carried that scared him, but he took off running through the woods!!"Sir, sir, can we have a word with you about tresspassing on our lease??",I shouted, as we ran through the woods after him!!(loving every minute of it!)He must ave traveled on foot the two miles back to the main road, we never actually got close enough to identify him, and though we waited for 3 hours(after dark), he never returned to get his truck until sometimes between 7:15 pm and 5:30 am the following day.We left a note on his truck stating he was tresspassing, not welcome back,and in danger of public citizens arrest if he returned again.What were these guys doing in this particular place if it wasnt because of my discovery??What the hell were they doing on private property without permission??A call to the Department of Natural Resources got an official denial of any known involvment by their agency with the truckand person invOlved.hmmmmmmmmmmm

Well... this is most interesting... yes I remember the story about the amphibians... You had collected the eggs and they hatched and they were identified as the most ugly looking creatures... I thought this story was pretty much a case closed.... now I'm not so sure. The fact that this guy came onto your property without asking permission and then running away... and he's a fed? Maybe there's something more to your amphibians than you thought...or maybe there's something really interesting in the location that they've been found.I hope you'll keep us informed of any more unusual developments in your story. What did you eventually do with those scary monsters anyway?

The larvae i had on captivity were released back into their natural habitat,in the same location where the eggs were collected.They were about 2 inches long.Yes i did get the license plate number

Dont know how relavent this is to my original posting, but the prints of a large cat (and I mean LARGE), were discovered yesterday by my sons' young friend.As the print was too large to be a mountain lion(cougar)it must have been a panther of some other species.It was definitly a cat, retractable claws gives that away, no other genera has this feature.Keep you all posted on further developments

Bob I would say it is very important. Fancy Ford pickup + Cage in back + fed licence + Was very fleet of foot when you wanted to talk to him = Someone who does not have your best intrest at heart. I would be on full alert if that had happened to me. Be careful roman...

TRacks of the large cat I described here are being found all thru the area south of highway 8 north of Linden.Also, apparently our government friend returned to our lease again, tracks matching those left by his truck before were observed again and photographed....I'm begining to wonder what the hell is happening here.Is it intentional repopulation of displaced species??When was this cat native to Texas??If anyone knows what kind of cat could make a 5 1/2 inch print(width) and is native to Texas I would sure like to here about it.This guy knows he's unwelcome and endangering his own well being by returning yet he did.

There is supposedly a big cat refuge in Tyler called the Tiger Creek Wildlife refuge http://www.tigercreek.org/ but not sure if it's up and running. They might have lost a cat and might want to find it before the hunters do. And also there is a breeding program called "The Texas Cougar Interbreeding Program" that has been going on since 1997. http://www.atlantic.net/~oldfla/panther/cougar.html and they might be releasing Florida panthers in Texas and releasing Texas panthers in Florida so who knows.

That's very possible Dan, but that doesn't quite explain why the agency in question would deny such an activity was taking place. It could have been a prop truck especially since it was in such good condition. I know you've seen them before. Those brand new utility trucks in suspicious places with tools on them that look like they've never been used. There's been a lot of reports worldwide of sightings of big cats in places where there aren't supposed to be any and this guy was probably some FED agent that was told to go out and look for one of them. Or maybe the cat was with him, possibly another prop just in case someone questioned his presense there. With all the animal experimentation that they've been doing, I wouldn't be surprised if they had some big cats with some kind of implants in their brains, etc. to control them with.

You have a point Krissa. I know exactly what kind of vehicles you're talking about. It's kind of odd to see brand new vehicles parked on the side of a little dirt road in the middle of nowhere without their drivers anywhere to be seen. I never gave much thought to the anomalous big cat sightings, but you might have a point with that as well. It seems that whenever there is any type of anomalous activity in a certain area, it's not too long before people start seeing big cats and other non-indigenous species of animals as well. Panthers, especially black ones, have been seen all over the States as well as the UK for years now. I'm not sure but you're probably not the first person that these animals are somehow controlled and used for surveillance and other purposes.

GRAPEVINE/COLLEYVILLE - That black panther seen roaming around northeast Tarrant County is really getting around. The panther showed up in Argyle last Sunday [Aug 30] , and now a woman in Fort Worth says she saw the big cat. The woman says she spotted the panther roaming on Marine Creek Parkway as she drove to work Thursday morning [Sept 3]. Police and animal control officers spent the morning searching for the black panther, but never found anything. If they do find it, officers plan to tranquilize the cat and take it to a safe area.
GRAPEVINE/COLLEYVILLE - Animal control officers say they may be on the lookout for two panthers. A panther and possibly a cub are somewhere in the Grapevine/Colleyville area. And some people are trying to take this dangerous situation into their own hands.
Robert Clements spotted the black panther Monday morning [Aug 25]. It was near a culvert, a few feet from the playground at Ashmore Park in Colleyville. Clements says, “He looked like somebody’s house cat. But it was big, had a long tail, probably 30 inches long. Pretty cat.”
Clements only saw one panther, but animal control officers say, according to their tracking expert, there may also be a cub. Colleyville Animal Control Official Debbie Wallis says, “He found tracks, double set of tracks. We have no confirmed sighting of the baby other than we know there’s tracks.” And if there’s a cub, Wallis says, “There’s no such thing as Immaculate Conception so there’s gotta be a male cat out there somewhere, if there’s a baby.”
Animal control officers have been trying to lure the panther into a cage by using beef, but apparently all beef has been bringing in is some raccoons and possums. So they’re going to take out the beef, bring in some chicken and see if maybe then they can trap their panther. Grapevine Animal Control Official Lawrence Hopkins says, “We’re going to try and do this the most humane way as possible, but if it did come to a life threatening situation, the public do come first.”
But experts warn, if you spot the cat, don’t try to be the hero. Hopkins says, “Go in the house and dial 911. Don’t attempt to catch this cat yourself.” And don’t, as someone tried Monday morning, attempt to shoot the panther. Hopkins says, “The ammunition used this morning would’ve passed through this cat and kept going. This is not that big of a cat. You’re gonna hurt somebody.” And potentially hurt a cat, that has yet to hurt anybody else. If you see the panther, experts warn it is best to move slowly. Do not scream, or attempt to run. Even if this animal was a pet, it is still wild and has the potential to attack.

Good find Dan. So there have been reports of animals that aren't supposed to be there. I wonder what else is going on in Texas that we don't know about yet?BOB B, it might be worth while to make a call into Tyler and see what the status is with that preserve and exactly what kind of big cats they have there.

Seems that I read somewhere about a RE-wilding project, I seem to recall something about Ted Turner and Jane being involved.Here in the Ohio valley less then a mile from my farm Black bear have been spotted by several of the neighbors. We also are plagued by Coyote, I have lived here for over forty years and just the past couple of years thease animals have re appeared.roman...

Good post David. I've been in the environmental field for a while and am shocked by what is going on. I've heard more than one story of supposed environmentalists getting caught planting rare species of animals in places where they never were before. Others almost routinely abuse the endangered species act and have become so politically corrupted that it gets me sick. Most of them spend more time arguing about things and pointing fingers than they do anything else. I can't even count the times I've heard about people being forced to stop doing certain types of activities on their properties, etc. all because one of these supposed environmentalists finds some type of endangered species on the land. Here in Stamford, we've got animals running around that you would of never seen a few years ago but are now a common sight. When I was a kid, I rarely saw deer, foxes, coyotes, wolves, bears, and other species but now people are seeing them all the time.
We've got so many deer that cases of tick borne diseases are affecting more and more people but whenever we try to do something about it, all these nuts come out of the woodwork and screw things up. Things are really starting to get out of hand.

The national forests of the west are also being shut down to the public. Special interest groups and the feds will be the only ones allowed to use them. A pity the dumbed down American public does not speak out on these and other issues.

David, I found something a little odd there.c) A "state marine conservation area," is a non-terrestrial marine or estuarine area that is designated so the managing agency may achieve one or more of the following:

There has never have been any shortages of Grizzly Bears, Wolves, Coyotes, Cougars, Rattlers, Deer, Elk, and Big Foot here in Kelowna (which means Grizzly Bear in the Okanagan tongue). Perhaps our abundant wildlife is being relocated elsewhere???

Thanks David I knew that I had read something about re-wilding before.When I was a child in the 50-s it was a rare thing to see much wild life around this area.In those days almost everyone hunted when he had a oppertunity.So the heards of Deer remained small and hard to find.There was no Bears,Coyote,Canada goose,moderate amounts of rabbit and small game.Now The numbers of Deer are out of control,They stand In the entry of my house when the coyote chase them.roman...

The truck I mentioned earlier in this thread has been located, and low and behold, the Department of Natural Resources has opened up an office in our small little town of about 2000....kind of makes you wonder , especially since the trucks assigned operator claims hes never been to the area mentioned...HMMMMMM...I am seeing the print of more than one large cat, the dimentions of the tracks vary by two inches, and range between 3 1/2" and 5 1/2" in width

Better keep an eye on them BOB B, they're up to something. BTW, has there been anything unusual besides the mysterious big cats leaving tracks? Keep an eye out for white or black trucks with caps and a lot of electrical equipment as well as anything that looks like a covert military operation. I have a hunch, but have to check a few things out first. Also take a quick look at Dan's latest post in the "Drought Has Engulfed Nearly A Third Of The United States" thread.

Well BOB B, there's definitely something going on in Texas. Krissa was asleep at the wheel and didn't check out one of her favorite sites out until last night. It's just one possible explanation for the increased activity. I'm just wondering if they were trying to get rid of the mutant fish and stuff or were just checking all the streams for contamination. It don't really explain the big cat tracks though unless they wanted to check the water covertly.
Fish Die-Off -USA (Texas)
February 6, 2002 -- The number of dead fish taken from Wadley-Barron Park has skyrocketed to 8000. According to city's Director of Community Services Monette Burke, the condition expected to be causing the die off -- golden algae bloom -- could result in a total extinction of fish in the 2.3 acre Central Midland park. "Usually in these cases, it is a total kill," Ms. Burke said. "There isn't anything which can be done. That is what we are being told." According to Ms. Burke, an official with the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) who was in Midland performing tests has stated preliminary tests indicate golden algae bloom as the reason for the die off. She indicated the TNRCC is reporting similar problems exist across the state -- including at the Pecos River and on some Central Texas lakes. According to Ms. Burke, golden algae bloom results when the water conditions get right in a pond or other body of water. The algae releases a toxin affecting the fish. It is not expected to affect turtles or other wildlife which reside at the particular body of water. The alarming figure is 8000-plus fish called Wadley-Barron home. It was impossible for city officials to determine if there are any live fish left in the pond or how many there actually were before the latest die off began.
