I don't know for sure, but my guess is that there is a pretty big delta between surface temps and temps at 10000 meters.Early week I saw -- on three ocasions -- three contrails, two of which formed an acute angle with the apex near the zenith and the third bisecting them about 20 degrees from the apex -- in other words, a huge "A" in the sky. Suddenly they were gone, and it was an article in the newspaper that pointed out a very interesting "coincidence": The University of Arizona was knocked out of the NCAA basketball playoffs. Coincidence? Hmmmmm.... ------------------ Duncan Kunz / duncankunz@cox.net Mesa AZ / 480-891-2525

The chem crap hung in the air from the time it was sprayed in the a.m. yesterday until past midnight across Southern NM and well into TX. Monday was as clear and blue as anyone could want. Right now it is the same except that the Big Boys and their Toys are out there ruining it again. Are you going to the Land of the Stealth Deltas or NM, Knew Eyes? ______________________ It isn't easy bein' green

Herbivore and Duncan...didn't you guys have some pretty bad wildfires down there as well? Also, is it common to see trails like the ones in the pictures or is that a rare event for your area? Kneweyes...hope the skies are blue for you if you travel that way! Scanner

There was a big fire in Alto, Lincoln County. We get trails throughout the state frequently.____________________ It isn't easy bein' green

Scanner (and all) Looks like a bunch of airline traffic. I should know, We left a big fat trail from Southern CA to near Houston. Westbound, we flew over the northern suburbs of Houston, west TX, southern NM, over the hills on the south side of Phoenix, then onto LAX.
I saw fat ones, skinny ones, "on and off" trails (left by a illuminati UAL 737?), trails crossing our path (X's in the sky), flew directly through persistent trails (funny, they seemed to be on the same route as us to LA) with no residue left on the windscreen or smell. Didn't see a single Military aircraft or hear unusual radio transmissions. We also got any altitude we requested. We also had varying degrees of contrails from our widebody airliner. We could see the shadow in the sky below us. A shadow, not a "laser beam, guiding device, black contrail, ect." Also saw the duststorms blowing eastward through the deserts, wildfire smoke in NM, and all the white sands from White Sands blowing east. All the southwest Chemtrail hotspots are under the major corridors into Southern CA. Cliffy Carnicom never answered my question air traffic since I know of one airline alone that has nearly 100 flights a day near his NM location. The OAT in these areas at 39000 and 41000 was -62C.

Fascination how there was ZERO airline traffic on Monday, but plenty today. Must have been one of those stealth deltas I guess. Boy, you must have gotten real dizzy on that commercial jet making those Xs! Did you need a barf bag, cuz just reading about it makes me think of those.________________ It isn't easy bein' green

Hey, Scanner!Anyplace out west is in danger of wildfires, especially in the summer. For us, a good estimate of summer wildfires is winter rain. The more rain we have, the more beautiful springtime is in the desert with all the lush growth -- which dies and turns into tinder come the summer heat! If that equation holds, we shouldn't have that bad a fire season in Arizona; winter was drier than normal. Interestingly enough, about 90 percent of the wildfires are caused by lightning strikes here. Come the July/August "monsoon" season, when the weather is from the southeast, we will have terrific thunderstorm activities -- but not much rain ii in the deserts. These "thundersprinkles" have all the bad stuff for starting fires, i.e., lightning; but none of the good stuff for stopping it, i.e., rain. Bummoir! It's fun being Grey -- and the travel benefits are great.

Herbivore,No traffic? Just because you didn't see any trails? Wrong Conditions are always changing. On my flight across the country, someplaces had contrails, some didn't. The amount of traffic generally was the same. Airplanes everywhere most of the time.

I would agree with plutobeach on this one....There is ALWAYS commercial traffic. However, if the conditions are not right to support contrails, you will not see an airliner at 35,000-40,000 feet above the earth, and you will not hear it either.

Scanner,In eastern New Mexico, the relationship is: less winter snow=more summer fires. And this winter there has been very little snow. Eastern New Mexico has also seen an increase in fires set intentionally by firefighters because they are paid less when they're not actually fighting fires. This could be a very bad year in the Lincoln National Forest. http://www.abqtrib.com/archives/news02/032502_news_homefire.shtml

KnewEyes, you might want to check out the Historic District of Silver City. If you are doing the tourist thing, there are some cool places that you would not expect to find out there in Ranch World. Kind of like Santa Fe, but a bit more down to earth. But if you go to Santa Fe, don't miss the Flea Market!_____________________ It isn't easy bein' green
