NEW YORK -- As the Bush administration prepares to make war on the Iraqi
people -- for it is the civilian population of that country and not Saddam
Hussein who will bear the brunt of the hostilities -- it is important that
we recall the medical consequences of the last Persian Gulf war. It was, in
effect, a nuclear war.
By the end of that 1991 conflict, the United States left between 300 and
800 tons of depleted uranium 238 in anti-tank shells and other explosives
on the battlefields of Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

The term "depleted" refers to the removal of the fissionable element
uranium 235 through a process that ironically is called "enrichment." What
remains, uranium 238, is 1.7 times more dense than lead. When incorporated
into an anti-tank shell and fired, it achieves great momentum, cutting
through tank armor like a hot knife through butter.

What other properties does uranium 238 possess?

First, it is pyrophoric. When it hits a tank at high speed, it bursts into
flames, producing aerosolized particles less than 5 microns in diameter,
making them easy to inhale into the terminal air passages of the lung.

Second, it is a potent radioactive carcinogen, emitting a relatively heavy
alpha particle composed of two protons and two neutrons. Once inside the
body -- either in the lung if it has been inhaled, in a wound if it
penetrates flesh, or ingested since it concentrates in the food chain and
contaminates water -- it can produce cancer in the lungs, bones, blood or
kidneys.

Third, it has a half-life of 4.5 billion years, meaning the areas in which
this ammunition was used in Iraq and Kuwait will remain effectively
radioactive for the rest of time.

Children are 10 to 20 times more sensitive to the effects of radiation than
adults. My fellow pediatricians in the Iraqi city of Basra, for example,
report an increase of six to 12 times in the incidence of childhood
leukemia and cancer. Yet because of the sanctions imposed on Iraq by the
United States and the United Nations, they have no access to antibiotics,
chemotherapeutic drugs or effective radiation machines to treat their
patients.

The incidence of congenital malformations has doubled in the exposed
populations in Iraq where these weapons were used. Among them are babies
being born with only one eye and with an encephaly -- the absence of a
brain.

However, the medical consequences of the use of uranium 238 almost
certainly did not affect only Iraqis. Some American veterans exposed to it
are reported, by at least one medical researcher, to be excreting uranium
in their urine a decade later. Other reports indicate it is being excreted
in their semen.

That nearly one-third of the American tanks used in Desert Storm were made
of uranium 238 is another story, for their crews were exposed to whole body
gamma radiation. What might be the long-term consequences of such exposure
has not, apparently, been studied.

Would these effects have surprised U.S. authorities? No, for incredible as
it may seem, the American military's own studies prior to Desert Storm
warned that aerosol uranium exposure under battlefield conditions could
lead to cancers of the lung and bone, kidney damage, non-malignant lung
disease, neurocognitive disorders, chromosomal damage and birth defects.

Do President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Deputy Defense Secretary
Paul Wolfowitz, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld understand the medical consequences of the 1991
war and the likely health effects of the next one they are planning?

If they don't, their ignorance is breathtaking. Even more incredible,
though, and much more likely, is that they do understand but don't care.

War Against The Weak: Eugenics and America’s Campaign to Create a Master Race, by Edward Black. 550 pp, with notes, appendices and bibliography. Four Walls Eight Windows, New York.

With vigor and eloquence, Pope John Paul II has spoken against the "culture of death." Without too much thought, one might believe that culture is of recent vintage and found in legal abortion and the debate over legalizing euthanasia.

But the culture of death is much older, and may well have its roots in the eugenics programs of the early 20th century. Writing in "War Against The Weak: Eugenics and America’s Campaign to Create A Master Race," Edwin Black casts an unwelcome spotlight on an ugly time when American leaders and philanthropic institutions virtually created eugenics and sought to stop the "unfit" from reproducing.

As valuable as the book is, however, Black doesn’t draw, at least explicitly, one important connection: Without the State, eugenics is impossible.

Early Eugenics

The book begins with a chilling description of a government sweep into southwestern Virginia’s Brush Mountain, where sheriff’s deputies ran down "imbeciles" for state eugenicists.

The authorities had prescribed forced sterilization, an idea that had humble beginnings in the theories of late 19th-century British statistician Francis Galton.

A pioneering meteorologist who also discovered that fingerprints were unique in each individual, Galton believed intelligence was inherited. He wrote about the subject and studied inherited intelligence, then coined a word using the Greek words for "well" and "born": eugenics.

The idea soon found fertile ground in the minds of American sympathizers, who thought controlling the birth of "imbeciles" and the "feebleminded" would "better society." Anyone could be a target for the eugenicists. Epileptics, also considered "feebleminded," were a particular eugenicist concern.

The man who launched American eugenics was Yankee Congregationalist Charles Davenport, born on the soil of New England Progressivism, which spawned feminism, prohibitionism and other reformist isms that plagued the 20th century.

With the help of the American Breeders’ Association, an animal husbandry group, Davenport drew support from such luminaries as Andrew Carnegie, the Harriman heirs and eventually the Rockefeller philanthropy. Alexander Graham Bell even rang in.

Davenport’s "first mission," Black writes, "was to identify the most defective and undesirable Americans, at least 10 percent of the population."

After identifying this "submerged tenth," appropriate "remedies" would be used to identify "defective germ plasm" and "terminate their bloodlines."

Davenport and his eugenicists "plotted a bold campaign of ‘purging the blood of the American people of the handicapping and deteriorating influences of these anti-social classes’," meaning the "socially unfit," such as epileptics, the "feebleminded," the deformed, the deaf, mute and blind.

The eugenicists believed "the great mass of humanity is not only a social menace … but it harbors the potential parenthood of the social misfits of our future generations."

The first round of sterilization and other remedies targeted 11 million "unfit" Americans.

The State – And States – Step In

Thus did the State, and the states, step in, beginning with Indiana, where yet another Congregationalist led the eugenicist charge. Indiana gave America its first sterilization law.

President Woodrow Wilson signed New Jersey’s sterilization law, and one of his deputies descended to greater fame as a Nazi collaborator at Buchenwald.

Pennsylvania’s legislature passed an "Act for the Prevention of Idiocy," but the governor vetoed it, saying the state may as well start chopping off heads. Other states, however, joined the crusade.

And again, eugenics attracted the support of prominent Americans. Progressive Theodore Roosevelt summed up eugenicist theory: "Society has no business to permit degenerates to reproduce." Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote the famous opinion upholding Virginia’s decision to sterilize a woman named Carrie Buck: "Three generations of imbeciles," he averred, "are enough."

Other supporters were Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, and in Britain, Winston Churchill and Major Leonard Darwin, son of Charles, postulator of evolution. Britain originated the idea of "lethal chambers" for its "unfit."

Eventually, the eugenicist virus found a hospitable host in Germany. There, Black concludes, it led to the death chambers of Buchenwald and Auschwitz.

Thanks to the Nazis, highly praised by eugenicists here, the movement eventually collapsed. But not before nearly 50,000 Americans were sterilized.

An Irony

An irony of this book is that its publisher hails itself as "progressive." As the late economist and historian Murray Rothbard wrote, "Progressivism" was a movement in New England born of Yankee Pietism in the early 19th century. By the early 20th, it had matured into a Messianic ideology of pervasive social controls to better the world: prohibition of alcohol, statist government regulation of business, even the "war to end all wars," World War I. And, of course, eugenics was there, too.

Religion is important to the story of eugenics, which is often incorrectly perceived as dealing strictly with matters of race. Eugenics involved race, and as Black writes, it was also a war against the weak: the retarded, the blind, the deaf, all those whom Christ enjoined us to treat with charity, meaning love of God.

But eugenics also veered into cultural and religious fanaticism. The "unfit" not only included swarthy southern Europeans, particularly Italians, but also the fair-skinned Irish. They were Catholics having too many babies, outpacing the Yankee Progressives, who imbibed the hoary anti-Catholic creed of the Know Nothings and Pietists.

Unsurprisingly, eugenics coincided with Sanger’s birth control movement and with Progressivist dominion of public schools in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Progressivists wanted public schools to "Christianize" their pupils, particularly Catholics and Lutherans. Thus, the same people who would ensure that all children would sing the right Christian hymns in public school, and extirpate "Romish superstition," as Rothbard explained, also wanted to ensure the wrong children were never born.

The Missing Thesis

Despite too much detail and too many pages, which led to some dry, laborious prose more suitable to a term paper, the book proves the verity of Lord Acton’s admonition: Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The power to control human reproduction may be the most absolute power of all. Government had it.

Not one involuntary sterilization could have occurred just because a few obsessed ideologues or rich industrialists wanted it. They hadn’t the legal power to sterilize anyone. They needed the omnipotent State.

Its elected and hired managers (politicians and bureaucrats), a high-minded elite believing itself omniscient, arrogated illegitimate authority and unjust dominion over others that defied Scriptural and natural law and the tradition of limited government, the cornerstones of American liberty.

That is the valuable lesson of Black’s important book, and until today’s "progressives" learn it, ventilating outrage over eugenics is a futile exercise.

The History of the Development of AIDS
Chapter Excerpt from “State Origin: The Evidence of the Laboratory Birth of AIDS”

The true history of the origin of AIDS can be traced throughout the 20th Century and back to 1878. On April 29 of that year the United States passed a “FEDERAL QUARANTINE ACT”.

The United States began a significant effort to investigate “causes” of epidemic diseases. In 1887, the effort was enhanced with the mandate of the U.S. “LABORATORY OF HYGIENE”. This lab was run by Dr. Joseph J. Kinyoun, a deep rooted-racist, who served the eugenics movement with dedication.

Two years later, 1889, we were able to identify “mycoplasmas”, a transmissible agent, that is now found at the heart of human diseases, including (AIDS) HIV.

In 1893, we strengthened the Federal Quarantine Act and suddenly there was an explosion of polio.

In 1898, we knew we could use mycoplasma to cause epidemics, because we were able to do so in cattle, and we saw it in tobacco plants.

In 1899, the U.S. Congress began investigating “leprosy in the United States”.

In 1902, We organized a “Station for Experimental Evolution” and we were able to identify diseases of an ethnic nature.

In 1904, we used mycoplasma to cause an epidemic in horses.

In 1910, we used mycoplasma to cause an epidemic in fowl/birds.

In 1917, we formed the “Federation of the American Society for Experimental Biology” (FASEB).

In 1918, the influenza virus killed millions of unsuspecting. It was a flu virus modified with a bird mycoplasma for which human primates had no “acquired immunity”.

In 1921, lead eugenics philosopher, Betrand Russell, publicly supported the “necessity for “organized” plagues” against the Black population.

In 1931, we secretly tested African Americans and we tested AIDS in sheep.

In 1935, we learned we could crystallize the tobacco mycoplasma, and it would remain infectious.

In 1943, we officially began our bio-warfare program. Shortly thereafter, we were finding our way to New Guinea to study mycoplasma in humans.

In 1945, we witnessed the greatest influx of foreign scientists in history into the U.S. biological program. Operation Paperclip will live in infamy as one of the darkest programs of a twisted parallel government fixated on genocide.

In 1946, the United States Navy hired Dr. Earl Traub, a notorious racist biologist.
A May appropriations hearing confirms the existence of a “secret” biological weapon.

In 1948, we know that the United States confirmed the endorsement of “devising a scheme” in which to address the issue of overpopulation in certain racial groups. State Department’s George McKennan’s memo will forever illuminate the eugenics mendacity necessary for genocide of millions of innocent people.

In 1949, Dr. Bjorn Sigurdsson isolates the VISNA virus. Visna is man made and shares some “unique DNA” with HIV. See, Proceedings of the United States, NAS, Vol. 92, pp. 3283 - 7, (April 11, 1995).

In 1951, we now know our government conducted its first virus attack on African Americans. Crates in Pennsylvania were tainted to see how many Negro crate handlers in Virginia would acquire the placebo virus.. They were also experimentally infecting sheep and goats. According to author Eva Snead, they also held their first world conference on an AIDS-like virus.

In 1954, Dr. Bjorn Sigurdsson publishes his first paper on Visna virus and establishes himself as the “Grandfather of the AIDS virus.” He will encounter competition from Dr. Carlton Gajdusek.

In 1955, they were able to artificially assemble the tobacco mosaic virus. Mycoplasmas will forever be at the heart of the U.S. biological warfare program

In 1957, future U.S. president, Rep Gerald Ford and others gave the U.S. Pentagon permission to aggressively deploy offensive biological agents. There are no recorded cases of AIDS prior to the 1957 creation of “Special Operation-X.” (The SOX) program served as the immediate prototype program for the Special Virus program to begin in 1962.

By 1960, Nikita Kruschev had been let in on the biological weapon. His 1960 statement will long reflect the arrogance of the secret blend of communism and democracy. The two countries would go to a November 1972 agreement to cull the Black Population.

In 1961, scientist Haldor Thomar publishes that viruses cause cancer. In 1995, he and Carlton Gajdusek informed the National Academy of Sciences that “the study of visna in sheep would be the best test for candidate anti-HIV drugs.”

In 1962, under the cover of cancer research, the United States charts a path to commit premeditated murder, the “Special Virus” program begins on February 12th. Dr. Len Hayflick sets up a U.S. mycoplasma laboratory at Stanford University. Many believe the “Special Virus” program began in November 1961 with a Phizer contract.

Beginning in 1963 and for every year thereafter, the “Special Virus” program conducted annual progress reviews at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA. The annual meetings are representative of the aggressive nature in which the United States pursued the development of AIDS.

In 1964, the United States Congress gave full support for the leukemia/lymphoma (AIDS) virus research.

In 1967, the National Academy of Sciences launched a full scale assault on Africa. The CIA (Technical Services Division) acknowledged its secret inoculator program.

In 1969, Fort Detrick told world scientists and the Pentagon asked for more money, they knew they could make AIDS. Nixon’s July 18 secret memo to Congress on “Overpopulation” serves as the start of the paper trail of the AIDS Holocaust.

In 1970, President Nixon signed PL91-213 and John D. Rockefeller, III became the “Population Czar.” Nixon’s August 10 National Security Memo leaves no doubt as to the genocidal nature of depopulation.

In 1971, Progress Report #8 is issued. The flowchart (pg. 61) will forever resolve the true laboratory birth origin of AIDS. Eventually the Special Virus program will issue 15 reports and over 20,000 scientific papers. The flowchart links every scientific paper, medical experiment and U.S. contract. The flowchart would remain “missing” until 1999. World scientists were stunned. The flowchart will gain in significance throughout the 21st Century. It is also clear the experiments conducted under Phase IV-A of the flowchart are our best route to better therapy and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS. The first sixty pages of progress report #8 of the Special Virus program prove conclusively the specific goal of the program. By June 1977, the Special Virus program had produced 15, 000 gallons of AIDS. The AIDS virus was attached as complement to vaccines sent to Africa and Manhattan. However, because of the thoroughness of authors, like Dr. Robert E. Lee, we also learn the Stanford Mycoplasma Laboratory issues one of the first papers with AIDS in the title. “Viral Infections in Man Associated with Acquired Immunological Deficiency States.” The primary scientist, Dr. Thomas Merigan, was a “consultant” to the Special Virus program.

Progress Report # 8 at 104 - 106 proves Dr. Robert Gallo was secretly working on the development of AIDS with full support of the sector of the U.S. government that seeks to kill its citizens. Dr. Gallo can not explain why he excluded his role as a “project officer” for the Special Virus program from his biographical book. Dr. Gallo’s early work and discoveries will finally be viewed in relation to the flowchart. We now know where every experiment fits into the flowchart. The “research logic” is irrefutable evidence of a federal “Manhattan-style project” to develop a “contagious” cancer that “selectively” kills. Dr. Gallo’s 1971 paper is identical to his 1984 AIDS announcement.

Progress Report #8 at 273 - 286 proves we gave AIDS to monkeys. Since 1962, the United States and Dr. Robert Gallo have been inoculating monkeys and re-releasing them back into the wild. Thus, even government scientists are baffled that both HIV-1 and HIV-II would “suddenly emerge” from two distinct monkey ancestral relatives during the last 100 years. A 1999 Japanese study will ultimately prove the Man to Monkey origin of Monkey AIDS. The monkey experiments summary definitively proves Monkey AIDS is also man-made.

In 1972, the United States and the Soviet Union entered into a biological agreement that would signal the death knell for the Black Population. The 1972 agreement for collaboration and cooperation in the development of offensive biological agents is still U. S. policy.

In 1973, we find that world scientist, Garth Nicolson reports on his project, “Role of the Cell Surface in Escape From Immunological Surveillance.” His report is accompanied by seven published papers. Dr. Nicolson worked in conjunction with the Special Virus program from 1972 until 1978. Dr. Nicolson is considered by some to be Dr. Gallo’s “West Coast” counterpart. It is strongly held that because of Dr. Nicolson, Dr. Robert Gallo and Dr. Luc Montagnier would secretly meet in Southern California to coordinate what they would and would not say about the special virus development program.

In 1974, Furher Henry Kissinger releases his NSSM-200 (U.S. Plan to Address Overpopulation). It is the only issue of discussion at the World Population Conference in Bucharest, Romania.  The men in the shadows had won, the whole world agrees to secretly cull Africa’s population. Today it is Africa and other undesirables. Tomorrow it may be you.

In 1975, President Gerald Ford signs National Security Defense Memorandum #314. The United States implements the Kissinger NSSM-200.

In 1976, the United States issues Progress Report #13 of the Special Virus program. The report proves the United States had various international agreements with the Russians, Germans, British, French, Canadians and Japanese. The plot to kill Black people has wide international support. In March, the Special Virus began production of the AIDS virus, by June 1977, the program will have produced 15,000 gallons of AIDS. President Jimmy Carter allows for the continuation of the secret plan to cull the Black Population.

In 1977, Dr. Robert Gallo and the top Soviet Scientists meet to discuss the proliferation of the 15,000 gallons of AIDS. They attach AIDS as complement to the Small pox vaccine for Africa, and the “experimental” hepatitis B vaccine for Manhattan. According to authors June Goodfield and Alan Cantwell, it is Batch #751 that was administered in New York to thousands of innocent people. This government will never be able to repay the people for the social rape, humiliation and out right prejudice people with HIV/AIDS face on a daily basis. The men in the shadows of the AIDS curtain accurately calculated that you would not care if only Blacks and gays are dying. In fact you don’t care that nearly a half million Gulf War veterans are encumbered with something contagious. Soon there will be no more Black people and a confused military, older White people will start suddenly dying and you still won’t get it. Be here now for us, give us a chance to be there for you.

Suddenly, just as President Nixon had predicted, there was explosive death. On November 4, 1999, the U.S. White House announced,.... “Within a period as short as five years, all new infections of HIV in the United States will be African American....” At some point our experts must be allowed to begin the interface process of allowing the history of this virus program to count. It is ludicrous and preposterous to fail to review the U.S. virus program in which to elucidate the etiology of AIDS.

More of the history of the secret virus program can be found in the archives of Dr. John B. Moloney. A review of the files under Dr. Moloney’s name would further pinpoint additional dates and records consistent with one of the greatest hunts, capture and proliferation of disease in the history of the human race. We have found the missing link. It is the guts of the research logic of a federal program that seeks to kill. We have found a curtain of AIDS. We can identify some of the people who work in the shadows of the curtain. Dr. Robert Gallo and Dr. Garth Nicolson must lead us in review. In light of the attack mechanisms available in which to inhibit AIDS, it is time that not another person be stricken with this relic, synthetic mycoplasma chimera.

Help those of us who are still here to realize full and contributory lives. We are all one people.

On September 28, 1998 I filed suit against the United States for the “creation”, “production” and “proliferation” of AIDS. On November 7, 2000, the appeals court agreed with the lower court and held AIDS bioengineering as “frivolous.” The world continues to wait for the court to rule on the resubmitted issues. The court can not continue to simply brush aside our experts and the government’s flowchart.

I have been asked to give my perspective with regard to the federal program MK-NAOMI . MK-NAOMI is the code for the development of AIDS. The “MK” portion stands for the two co-authors of the AIDS virus, Robert Manaker and Paul Kotin. The “NAOMI” portion stands for “Negroes are Only Momentary Individuals.” The U.S. government continues to orchestrate silence from the very top echelons of the Congress and military. At present there is no accountability. The good people will ultimately create a tsunami of public outrage. We can not allow the state an autocratic right to govern outside of the Constitution. Our society is structured to hide crimes committed by the state, while punishing citizens for minor indiscretions. Their strategy focuses on the general confusion they can create via manipulation of the media. They are very good at what they do. We must become more focused in our continued presentation of the flowchart. The flowchart is the absolute missing link in proving the existence of a coordinated research program to develop a cancer virus that depletes the immune system. New diseases do not create old illnesses.

Boyd, a black man, was diagnosed with AIDS in 1992. When he found out about the above “cure” about 2 years ago, he tried the remedy once and has been symptom free ever since.

Here is an unbelievable quote: George Bellinger Jr. of the Washington, D.C., advocacy group AIDS Action said lawsuits such as the one filed by Graves can cause more harm than good – as do rumors and unproven cure-alls.

"It prevents people from getting the real information and taking precautionary measures to enhance their lives or prevent them from getting HIV," he said.
Additionally, Bellinger said, bickering over the beginnings of AIDS at this point matters very little. Far more pressing, he said, are developing a vaccine and preventing new infections.

"A lot of people are looking for a scapegoat . . . and that is a detriment to all people." (end quote)

The Disabling Of A Nation

Our Nation is becoming disabled; physically, economically, morally and spiritually. This is not happening by chance or natural evolution. Over the past hundred years or so there has been a concerted effort by the bureaucratic elite, to slowly degrade our country and take it over from within. Included below are several important quotes.

"The drive of the Rockefellers and their allies is to create a one world government combining Super Capitalism and Communism under the same tent, all under their control". Do I mean conspiracy? Yes I do, I am convinced there is such a plot, international in scope, generations old in planning, and incredibly evil in intent." Congressman Larry P. McDonald, 1976, killed in the Korean Airlines 747 that was shot down by the Soviets.

In this article I will focus mainly on the physical deterioration of our population, as that is where I have the most direct experience. I am a chronic Lyme sufferer who was misdiagnosed for 8 years with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. As a result I was not treated with appropriate antibiotics and the disease became deeply embedded in my central nervous system. As with Syphilis ( a close spirochetal cousin of Lyme ), systemic involvement can make this disease very tenacious and difficult to treat. Often, open ended antibiotic treatment is required. Even with persistent antibiotics, one may never be totally cured. However, open ended treatment, many times, arrests the disease and prevents patients from sliding further downhill. Supporting your immune system with natural substances and good diet, is also necessary in overcoming Lyme and other chronic illnesses.

Every time we turn around there is a new condition or disease, many times with a readymade corresponding drug or vaccine. If there are no immediately available drugs to ease the symptoms of a "new" disease, you can be assured that the pharmaceutical companies and the vaccine industry are very busy working on the whole process. Many times fear and panic must be created first in order to develop a sure market for these new products. It appears as though this may be the case with West Nile Virus. I am not implying that these diseases are not real but I do think , many times, that perhaps the more innocent diseases are being emphasized to the hilt, in the media, in order to further specific agendas. Those diseases that are truly disabling our population, such as Lyme, CFS, GWI, Fibromyalgia, M.S, etc, and possibly causing a progressive degenerative process, are being allowed to quietly spread through our population. In the meantime we are being denied curative treatment and are told that many of these diseases are all in our head.

Govt. documents list criteria for an effective biowarfare agent. There are germs that kill and there are ones that disable. When trying to disrupt and take over a country discreetly, it is considered more effective to use disabling agents, especially ones that make it appear as though a patient is malingering. Patients are dismissed as hypochondriacs while the disease is allowed to pass slowly but steadily through the population. In this scenario, people are not dying off left and right with a highly contagious lethal disease, so no one suspects what is really happening and therefore no action is taken to curb the spread of disease. With so many people becoming disabled and unable to work, this puts an enormous strain on our economy.

Dr. Donald MacArthur, who was in charge of the development and testing of biological weapons for the Pentagon, spoke at a hearing before a Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations in 1969. MacArthur puts it like this.

" Incapacitating agents are a more recent development and are largely in the R&D phase ( in 1969 ). In fact, the prime emphasis in agent R&D is on developing better incapacitating agents. We are synthesizing new compounds and testing them in animals. I should mention that there is a rule of thumb we use. Before an agent can be classified as an incapacitant, we feel that the mortality should be very low. Therefore, the ratio of the lethal dose to the incapacitating dose has to be very high. Now this is a very technical job. We have some of the top scientists in the country working for years on how to get more effecive incapacitating agents. It is not easy." He also tells us that an incapacitating agent "imposes a greater logistic burden on the enemy when he has to look after the disabled people." It is becoming highly suspected that the media scares concerning smallpox, anthrax, West Nile Virus, SARS, etc. are :

1.) being used as a smokescreen to divert our attention away from the more invisible incapacitating epidemics already in our midst. 2.) To create fear and panic for the purpose of marketing drugs and vaccines. 3.) To manipulate the population into accepting loss of liberty in the name of "Homeland Security"

Our attention is definitely being diverted in the case of Gulf War Illness. GWI is real. It is not caused by stress as the government would have us believe. The American people have not been told that over 16,000 Vets have already died. Many children of the GW Veterans have been born deformed. Spouses and children have become ill with the same symptoms of GWI. Even some of the doctors who treated the Vets and their wives, have become ill.

It appears that GWI is spreading through the general population in the form of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, M.S. , etc. The symptoms of all these diseases are very similar to GWI. A genetically altered strain of mycoplasma has been isolated from the above patient populations, including GWI.

As I mentioned in a previous article "Living Next Door To Plum Island", the U.S Army funded inventor Shyh-Ching Lo's invention.... a pathogenic mycoplasma named mycoplasma fermentens incognitus. This is the same pathogen that has been isolated from the blood of patients with the above diseases. This invention was patented in 1993 and the patent number assigned to it is 5,242,820. I will take the opportunity here to quote from part of a paragraph in this patent.

"The mycoplasma fermentens incognitus pathogen is useful for the detection of antibodies in the sera of patients or animals infected with mycoplasma fermentens incognitus. Some of these patients or animals infected with mycoplasma fermentens incognitos, will be patients who have been diagnosed as having AIDS or ARC, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Wegeners Disease, Sarcoidosis, Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Kibuchi's Disease, autoimmune diseases such as Collagen Vascular Disease and Lupus and chronic debilitating diseases such as AlszheimerÌs Disease."

In other words, the Army knows what segments of the population are infected with this pathogen.

Recently, our Lyme disease support group invited a Red Cross pathologist to speak concerning blood screening for Lyme disease and babesiosis ( another "new and emerging" tick borne disease in the Northeast ). He told us that it has been found that babesiosis can be passed on through the blood supply and they do screen donors for this organism. The pathologist told us that they are not sure if the lyme spirochete can be spread through the blood supply but they supposedly do not take blood from those who have a documented active infection. I then asked the pathologist what restrictions were placed on GW Veterans when they came back from the war. He told us that blood donations from veterans were restricted for one year but after that time elapsed the vets were allowed to donate blood. I asked him if the Red Cross screens the blood supply, in general, for mycoplasma fermentens. He turned bright red and said that no they did not. I told him that I found that odd. Independant scientists have found many GWI patients infected with this mycoplasma and when treated with antibiotics, many recover. Their blood also usually reverts to myco- negative phenotype after antibiotic treatment. I also mentioned the many other diseases that present with this mycoplasma. The Red Cross pathologist had no comment.

Why aren't our health departments and doctors being educated concerning this obviously crucial matter? Why aren't they being told to test and treat for this mycoplasma in the chronic illness population? Antibiotics work and help improve the health of many of these patients.

I was told by a very well respected microbiologist that the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology has even published that antibiotics can be successfully used to treat mycoplasma fermentens infections. The army has also published that mycoplasmas can cause systemic illness and even death. Evidently this information is not readily available to the public.

Some may argue that just because this organism is found in many of these chronic illnesses, doesn't mean that it is the main cause. This is a valid point. Mycoplasma fermentens may be just an opportunistic infection or it could cause a co-morbid state. However, I was told by this same microbiologist that this is mainly an academic argument and that no matter what the organism's role is in a specific disease, it is still quite important and must be successfully treated in order for patients with such infections to fully recover.

Why are we experiencing such an intense influx of "emerging diseases" in general? No one seems to question where all these new conditions are coming from. Most people just trustingly accept the explanations from the mainstream media such as; global warming, the chopping down of the rainforests, increased air travel, bugs traveling in old tires, or chemicals in the environment. The mainstream media never mentions that, for example, West Nile virus could have escaped from Yale, Plum Island, or Rockefeller University , where the organism that causes WNV has been studied for years. To me, this explanation would make more sense because the WNV outbreak occurred in the very same area where these institutions are located. The mainstream media also never mentions that these new diseases could be the result of government experimental field tests.

I realize that environmental chemicals, poor diet, etc. do play an important role in our health or should I say lack of health. They can lower our body's immunity and therefore make us more susceptible to disease. In fact, pesticide spraying has been found to actually increase the number of insects with a certain disease and it also makes us more susceptible to the disease itself by lowering the effectiveness of our immune system.. Pesticides increase the incidence of miscarriages,,infertility and hormone disruption. Why then did the mayor of N.Y.C insist on repeatedly spraying certain sections of the city for West Nile Virus? Could this be a discreet method of population control? The U.S.Government has quite a history of experimentation on it's own citizens without their knowledge or consent. There have been several T.V specials documenting these past experiments. Why do people think the experimenting has stopped? Media only covers or admits to sinister events after a certain number of years have passed since the crime was committed. I have a government document called, "Biological Testing Involving Human Subjects". It is hundreds of pages long and lists where these experiments took place, when they took place and what simulants were used. Several of these "simulants" have been discovered to cause disease in immune compromised patients, the elderly and the very young.

The Tuskegee Experiment is a very famous example of one of the more controlled government experiments. This was a "study" where black men with syphilis were denied antibiotic treatment to see what would eventually happen to them. Of course they all died prematurely and suffered many horrible side effects.

Borrelia Burgdorferi, the causative spirochete in Lyme disease, behaves in a similar way to the syphilis spirochete. Chronic Lyme patients, like Gulf War Illness patients and Tuskegee Experiment participants, are also being denied appropriate antibiotic treatment. In fact, the lyme literate doctors who are treating these patients, according to their clinical judgement (testing is very inaccurate), are being persecuted and some have had their licenses removed. There are very few doctors who treat chronic lyme and there are even fewer who still accept insurance. 60% of Lyme patients are coinfected with mycoplasmas. Some microbiologists feel that there appears to be something "different" about the lyme spirochete and that this "difference" may account for it's enhanced pathogenic properties. However, to know for sure would require detailed genetic analysis. There is a concern that this organism may have been gentically modified. Another interesting thought...perhaps to become a chronic condition, the lyme spirochete may require another co- factor....such as mycoplasma.

Many are beginning to suspect that the lyme disease epidemic, and the nonsensical controversy over treatment and diagnoses, may possibly be reminiscent of the Tuskegee Experiment, only on a much larger scale.

Korean War Veterans, who had been trained in bacteriological weapons and who specifically worked with a crystalline form of brucellosis, were given an interesting document when they were discharged. It stated that "Veterans with multiple sclerosis developing to a degree of 10% or more disability within 2 years after separation from active service may be presumed to be service connected"....for disability compensation."

Does it sound as though the government may know what causes multiple sclerosis?

Logically, we can presume that whatever biological agents are developed would have to have antidotes, cures or corresponding vaccines. I would like you to think about some of the ramifications involved here. We are not talking about the publicized disease threats such as Anthrax , Smallpox, West Nile Virus or SARS. We are looking at what may be genetically altered organisms that are currently causing untold suffering. Try naming the many chronic and disabling conditions which are plaguing our citizens and then think about how many of these diseases have cures available. I have only noticed symptomatic treatments being offered. The U.S. CODE, SEC. 50, tells us that it is legal to test biological and chemical substances on unwitting populations. Listed in this document are the many excuses that can be used for the purpose of experimenting on the American public without their knowledge or consent.

Millions of Americans have been used as long term test subjects as a result of the essentially mandatory national vaccine program. How can anyone claim to know the long term consequences of combining one vaccine after another. Can the vaccine companies prove that all the illnesses which plague our nation's children, are not caused by vaccines? 31% of the children in the U.S. suffer from a chronic condition. This is shocking! I donÌt hear anyone in the media questioning why so many of our children are sick. Many parents, researchers and doctors are finding direct correlations between vaccinations, ADD, autism, SIDS,asthma, allergies, shaken baby syndrome, etc. Some doctors, who are paying attention, have compared the health of the unvaccinated children to the vaccinated ones in their practices. They are observing that the unvaccinated children have less chronic conditions and are more healthy overall. Try to find long term independant safety studies on these childhood vaccines and see what you come up with.

Should we be trusting the health of our children, who are our nation's future, to the whims of the pharmaceutical companies? It is an obvious fact that the sicker people are, the more money these companies will make. It is not easy to prove without a shadow of a doubt, that these vaccines are causing severe health problems down the road. The vaccine manufacturers know this!

I have personally witnessed the deception with the recent Lyme vaccine. The pharmaceutical company that marketed this vaccine, knew ahead of time that 30% of those receiving the vaccine could acquire a form of arthritis for which there is no cure. Somewhere in the fine print, this fact was mentioned. Most people, however, did not have access to this information. In order to try and warn as many people as possible I actually stood outside of a chain grocery store, several times, handing out information that explained the risks of this vaccine. The vaccine was being given to anyone who showed up at certain local drug stores. There were no doctors available to explain the risks or to ask if people currently had accute lyme disease or a chronic version of it. Those who had lyme should have been warned not to get the vaccine due to the increase risk of side effects. The Lymerix vaccine was taken off the market, supposedly because there was not enough interest. I wonder why? I know of several people , who received the vaccine and were healthy to start with, that have now been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, CFS, or arthritis. To them the connection is obvious .....but how can they ever prove it.

Mycoplasmas are known to be a very common vaccine contaminant.

Monkeys, when injected with mycoplasma fermentens, begin to waste away and die 7 to 9 months later.

The anthrax vaccines given to the Gulf War Veterans, were found to be contaminated with mycoplasma fermentens.

The French soldiers , who did not receive these vaccines, were the only ones that did not come down with Gulf War Syndrome.

The sick Gulf War Veterans filed a lawsuit against Tanox Biosystems of Houston, which produced the anthrax vaccine.

President H. W. Bush was supposedly a major shareholder in Tannox.

What president do we now find promoting anthrax and or smallpox vaccines for everyone?

Why would the government give known disabling vaccines to our military? Is this part of Gorbachev's plan to disarm the Americans? Is he working together with certain factions of our government to accomplish this goal?

Let's assume for a minute that certain government agencies, pharmaceutical companies and the bureaucratic elite are playing a negative role concerning all our emerging conditions and diseases. Who would we then turn to for investigations into these illnesses? Surely not the very institutions who may be responsible for the problem.

Certainly there are many good intelligent people who work for these institutions. It is mainly those at the very top who are privy to all the information. Jobs today are very compartimentalized. This is especially evident within the medical system. How can anyone be expected to see the whole picture when we are taught only to be concerned with our little piece of the puzzle? Therefore, we must take the time to educate ourselves in a broader manner. I've found it very helpful to not dismiss anything but to keep all information in the back of one's mind for future reference. Much of what I used to consider crazy fiction, is presenting itself as current reality.

"United we stand, divided we fall". I don't see this to mean that we must blindly follow any leader, no matter what the cost. To me it means resisting the media propaganda which tries to convince us all to be fearful and distrustful of each other. This manipulation is what divides us, if we allow ourselves to believe the lies presented to us. I acquired Senate Report 94-755, which is approx. 1,000 pages. It is entitled COINTELPRO: The FBIÌs Covert Action Programs Against American Citizens. I want to share several quotes

"COINTELPRO is the FBI acronym for a series of covert action programs directed against domestic groups. In those programs, the bureau went beyond the collection of intelligence to secret action designed to "disrupt" and "neutralize" target groups and individuals."

"In the intervening 15 years, the Bureau conducted a sophisticated vigilante operation aimed squarely at preventing the exercise of First Ammendment rights of speech and association, on the theory that preventing the growth of dangerous groups and the propagation of dangerous ideas, would protect the national security and deter violence. Many of the techniques used would be intolerable in a democratic society even if all the targets had been involved in violent activity, but COINTELPRO went far beyond that. The unexpressed major premise of the programs was that a law enforcement agency has the duty to do whatever is necessary to combat perceived threats to the existing social and political order. These formal programs were called Counter Intelligence. Covert Action is, however, a more accurate term for the Bureau's programs directed against American citizens. Covert Action is the label applied to clandestine activities intended to influence political choices and social values."

Many of the FBI's targets were supporters of peaceful social change such as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Inter- University Committee for Debate on Foreign Policy

Many groups that today perhaps threaten the existing agendas held by the current administration, are being labeled, "hate groups", extremeists, terrorists, etc. We are told that we are to be very leary and fearful of all these different groups and that we need more and more "protection" from all these "dangerous" people. More often than not, this "protection" is in the form of more surveillance and loss of rights for everyone.

Modern technology is making it increasingly possible to totally control a society. We must become vigilant. We must begin asking questions and not trustingly believe all we are told.

It is not the good decent people of our nation nor our country's cherished ideals, set forth in the U.S Constitution, that we are questioning here. We are questioning the intentions of a mighty military industrial complex that is growing more and more powerful with every passing day. America needs to wake up before it's too late.

We need to approach this overwhelming array of disturbing situations with firmness , wisdom, and most of all, with an open heart. We musn't react with hate, revenge or fear. Reacting with these emotions will only throw us deeper into the pit of hopelessness.

We can all become informed and then inform others. An informed population is much more difficult to manipulate.

Many times the real culprits are those doing the fingerpointing.

The Media is becoming a monopoly, is totally controlled and is being used to create fear and manipulate the American people. If the media was doing itÌs job, I wouldn't have to be writing this article. The following I feel are very important quotes to contemplate.

Vaccine-evading mousepox virus ignites debate

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- A research team backed by a federal grant has created a genetically engineered mousepox virus designed to evade vaccines, underscoring biotechnology's deadly potential and stirring debate over whether such research plays into the hands of terrorists.

The team at the Saint Louis University, led by Mark Buller, created the superbug to figure out how to defeat it, a key goal of the government's anti-terrorism plan.

The researchers designed a two-drug cocktail that promises to defeat their exceptionally deadly virus. They hope to publish their work soon in a peer review journal.

"The whole focus was to contribute to the biodefense agenda of the country," Buller said.

Buller spliced a gene known to suppress the immune system into the mousepox virus, then injected the combined strand into vaccinated mice. All of them died.

Mousepox can't be passed to humans, but it's a close relative to smallpox, making it an ideal virus to study in animals.

The research highlights a contentious discussion among scientists and security experts: Does publication of such work help or hinder the biodefense effort? Should such studies be conducted at all?

In response to heightened security concerns, many scientific journals have censored studies with national security implications. When Buller presented his results last week at an international biodefense conference, it prompted debate.

Some feared that publication of such information -- regardless of whether scientists' intentions are altruistic -- could help terrorists create biological weapons laced with genetically modified superbugs. Such germs are created by splicing drug-resistant genes in viruses normally defeated by vaccines.

"In the Soviet Union, there was some research trying to develop genetically engineered smallpox," said Ken Alibek, a former top scientist in the Soviet biological weapons program who came to the United States in 1992. "It wasn't very successful, but now with all the new advances in technology, know that it's pretty much obvious that it can be done."

Alibek, a director of George Mason University's National Center for Biodefense, believes Buller's work and similar research should be confidential to impede terrorists and rogue nations from acquiring knowledge about genetically engineered bioweapons.

Buller counters that publicizing such work will deter terrorists by showing that scientists can build defenses against souped-up bioweapons. Buller also believes scientists must genetically engineer pathogens to understand how to defeat them.

"All this is out there," Buller said of bioweapons research. "There are cookbooks easily attainable on how to make this stuff."

Buller said his work replicated a nearly 3-year-old Australian study, which the scientific community continues to debate.

In that study, scientists trying to beat back an overabundance of mice in Australia spliced a single foreign gene into a typically mild mousepox virus in hopes of creating a genetically engineered sterility treatment. Instead, they created a mousepox strain so powerful that it killed even those mice inoculated against the virus.

Buller's team improved upon the Australian accident, said Larry Kerr of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

"They did a more thorough analysis," Kerr said. "It's more substantive and it went a step further: They developed a counter measure."

Buller said infected mice recovered when treated with a combination of anti-viral drugs, providing hope that a treatment against genetically engineered smallpox could be developed.

Smallpox historically kills about a third of its victims and can be transmitted from person to person, unlike anthrax and other biological weapons.

On December 14th, two days after Que’s death, Dr. Set Van Nguyen was found dead in Geelong, Australia. Nguyen had worked as a scientist in the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization’s animal-diseases facility for 15 years. Earlier last year two scientists at that facility were written up in the esteemed science journal Nature for their work in genetic manipulation and DNA sequencing. Specifically, the two had created a virulent form of mousepox. “Australian scientists, Dr. Ron Jackson and Dr. Ian Ramshaw, accidentally created an astonishingly virulent strain of mousepox, a cousin of smallpox, among laboratory mice. They realised that if similar genetic manipulation was carried out on smallpox, an unstoppable killer could be unleashed” read the Nature article on the scientists.
The recently reported research which spliced the genes from the deadly 1918 flu virus into a new flu virus for which there is no widespread immunity, and the research which created a vaccine-resistant form of mouse pox (similar to smallpox) has no purpose whatsoever other than the creation of population reduction tools. Now we learn that some of the dead microbiologists were connected to this project.

Late on November 16, 2001, Dr. Don C. Wiley, a prominent Harvard-based microbiologist, went missing in Memphis. After attending a banquet for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at The Peabody hotel, Wiley -- one of the world’s top biochemists and rumored to be headed toward a Nobel Prize -- disappeared without a trace. Four hours after he left the Peabody, Wiley’s rented white Mitsubishi Galant was found abandoned with a full tank of gas and the keys in the ignition, pointed west on the Hernando DeSoto bridge into Arkansas.

A month later his body was found snagged on a tree 320 miles downstream in a sidewater of the Mississippi River near Vidalia, Louisiana. Bloated from the water and rendered unrecognizable by exposure to the elements, Wiley’s body was nonetheless easy to identify because his wallet and identification were still in his pants pocket.

Across the Atlantic in a rural village near Wiltshire, England, a seemingly unrelated death occurred a week after Wiley’s disappearance. Vladimir Pasechnik died of a stroke on November 23rd in the yard behind his house. Pasechnik, a Russian who defected to England in 1989, was once in charge of the Institute of Ultra Pure Biochemical Preparations, first in St. Petersburg and later in Leningrad. Pasechnik and his comrades developed and perfected potential biological weapons such as anthrax, Ebola, Marburg virus (similar to Ebola), plague, Q fever, and smallpox, eventually creating strains of these viruses stronger than any scientists had ever imagined possible.

On December 10, 2001, back in the United States, Dr. Robert M. Schwartz was found stabbed to death in his rural Loudoun County, Virginia, home. Authorities speculated at the time that Schwartz might have interrupted a burglary in process. However, investigators found no signs of forced entry and nothing seemed to be missing from the home. Schwartz, who lived alone, was a founding member of the Virginia Biotechnology Association and executive director of research and development at Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology. He was extremely well respected in the field of biophysics and considered something of an expert on DNA sequencing.

Two days later and a few hundred miles south, Dr. Benito Que was found comatose on a Miami street near the University of Miami Medical School laboratory where he worked. Que died of injuries Miami police initially suspected were the result of a mugging. Later Que’s death was determined to be “natural”-- the result of a heart attack. Que was a cell biologist involved in research on infectious diseases and worked in the hematology department of the medical school.

According to the Victoria police department, Nguyen died after entering a refrigerated storage facility. “He did not know the room was full of deadly gas which had leaked from a liquid nitrogen cooling system. Unable to breathe, Mr. Nguyen collapsed and died” reads the official report.

Then, in January 2002, Ivan Glebov and Alexi Brushlinski -- both members of the Russian Academy of Science -- were killed. The Russian daily newspaper Pravda reported that Glebov died as the result of a bandit attack and simply says that Brushlinski was killed in Moscow.

On February 9th, Pravda reported the death of Victor Korshunov, head of the microbiology sub-faculty of the Russian State Medical University. Korshunov died of massive head trauma. His body was found February 8th at the entrance of his Moscow house.

Less than a week later, on February 12th, the body of Ian Langford, a senior fellow at the University of East Anglia’s Center for Social and Economic Research, was found in his blood-spattered and ransacked Norwich, England, home. The Times of London reported the following day that police and emergency technicians discovered Langford naked from the waist down and partly wedged under a chair. Coroners were unable to determine the exact cause of Langford’s death. Langford was described by The Times as being one of Europe’s leading experts on the links between human health and environmental risk.

In less than four months, then, nine of the world’s top microbiologists were dead. All had been doing research that had connections with the creation and prevention of biological warfare. But there is more to the story.

On October 4, 2001, a Siberian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Novosibirsk, Siberia, was shot down over the Black Sea by an “errant” Ukrainian surface-to-air missile, killing everyone on board. The highly publicized crash rattled the 9/11-shaken nerves of people everywhere, but, according to conspiracy theorists, none were rattled more than the Israeli science community. Many in Israel believe the flight carried four or five microbiologists headed to work in one of the 50-plus scientific laboratories in Novosibirsk.

Just before the Black Sea crash, Israeli journalists were claiming that two Israeli microbiologists had been murdered by terrorists. After the crash, these same journalists claimed that Avishai Berkman, Amiramp Eldor, and Yaacov Matzner -- flight manifests confirm they were on the plane -- were top microbiologists in Israel. These journalists say that the men were the head of hematology at a major hospital, the director of Tel Aviv’s public-health department, and the director of the Hebrew University’s school of medicine, respectively. However, the names and the titles don’t match.

Then on November 24, 2001, a Swissair flight from Berlin to Zurich crashed during its landing approach. Twenty-four of the 33 people on board were killed, including the head of the hematology department at Israel’s Ichilov Hospital and directors of the Tel Aviv public-health department and the Hebrew University school of medicine.

Meanwhile, back in Memphis, on February 10th the burned-beyond-recognition corpse of Katherine Smith, a driver-testing center employee, was found in her car on U.S. 72 near Fayette County. Smith was scheduled to testify before a federal magistrate the following day against five Middle Eastern men who allegedly paid her $1,000 each for fraudulently issued Tennessee driver’s licenses.

What does it all mean? Is it a worldwide conspiracy? It sounds like a plotline from The X-Files, but these are the facts, and they’ve got conspiracy theorists all over the globe buzzing.

Terror Talk

“As a talk-radio host you get these conspiracy types all the time. I like to say to them, ‘Sir, you are being misled,’” says Lowell Ponte, host of radio’s The Lowell Ponte Show (www.talkamerica.com/lowell/) and a frequent contributor to FrontPage Magazine (www.frontpagemag.com), a news site edited by controversial writer David Horowitz.

But when he heard about the dead scientists and the driver’s-license scheme, Ponte says he realized that maybe the conspiracy theorists were onto something this time. So he read up on the issues and penned a column titled “Terror in Tennessee: The Middle East echoes in America’s Heartland.” In the column, Ponte discusses the mysterious deaths of Wiley and Smith and speculates on the possible links to global terrorism. Ponte ends the column by writing, “Reasonable people would say that any prudent look at such fatal coincidences should lead us to support President George W. Bush’s life-and-death, open-and-clandestine war against terrorism. Those with a more ‘liberal’ imagination prefer to believe that Denial really is just a river flowing past Memphis, Tennessee.”

Ponte told the Flyer that he wrote that column after reading about the Katherine Smith case in several national newspapers and reading about the dead microbiologists on some Web sites devoted to traditional news and some devoted to conspiracy theories.

“When you have two people -- both of whom are involved in activities that are significant to terrorists -- who die in the same community during a short period of time, you have to at least entertain the idea that the [events] are related,” said Ponte.

London-based author Ian Gurney also became interested in the scientists’ deaths while doing research for his next book. The book is about biological warfare and is tentatively titled The Spawn of the Devil.

“I was doing research for my book and it seemed like every week I would receive a news alert about another microbiologist dying,” Gurney told the Flyer. “The story was all over the place but no one had really connected the deaths yet.”

So Gurney began researching the various deaths himself and saw a common theme -- all were working on projects related to biological warfare. Considering the post-9/11 climate worldwide, he thought these links were more than just coincidental.

“I don’t believe that much in coincidence,” said Gurney. “Most people in America, like most people in my country, tend to only scan the news for about 30 minutes. That’s all we can take before we have to go make a cup of tea. We don’t usually get into the stories behind the stories. The news doesn’t usually get in depth.”

Gurney took it upon himself to visit the Web sites of major newspapers all over the world. Reading articles and obituaries, he pieced together a web of deaths -- some natural, some violent -- that he believes are related to current advancements in biological weapons. Gurney began publishing articles on the connections on his Web site (www.caspro.com), and his stories were soon picked up or modified by other sites like FrontPage Magazine and the conspiracy-theory-heavy site Rense.com (www.rense.com) run by talk-radio host Jeff Rense.

“The news doesn’t really go in depth,” said Gurney. “The majority of people in your country and in mine are being treated like mushrooms. We’re being kept in the dark and having bullshit heaped over us. If there is a conspiracy and we don’t pay attention to the signs, they’re going to get away with it.”

Dr. Death

Conspiracy theory or not, there is an unmistakable and frightening connection between one of the dead scientists and a man referred to by London newspaper News of the World as “The Third Horseman of the Apocalypse.”

Vladimir Pasechnik, the Soviet scientist who died in England last fall, and Dr. Ken Alibek, the scientist formerly known as Kanatjan Alibekov, worked together at Biopreparat -- the Soviet germ-warfare laboratory. Alibekov defected to the United States in 1992, changed his name, and made the talk-show circuit. After September 11th, many Americans saw Alibek sharing his views on cable and network news. His life begun anew, Alibek now spends his days in a tiny office at George Mason University, near Washington, D.C., trying to undo the horrors he spent the first part of his scientific career creating.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Pasechnik and Alibekov were the top two scientists at Biopreparat, but they were hardly the only scientists there. According to U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, at its height Biopreparat employed as many as 70,000 scientists and technicians -- many of whom worked solely on creating biological weapons of mass destruction.

“Through our program, we stockpiled hundreds of tons of anthrax, plague, and smallpox for our use against the West,” Alibek told News of the World in October. “What went on in our labs was one of the most closely guarded secrets of the Cold War.”

But when the Soviet Union collapsed, funding for Biopreparat disappeared with it, and the previously employed scientists began selling their services to the highest bidders. According to Alibek: “Many went to Europe and Asia or have simply dropped out of sight. I’ve heard that several went to Iraq and North Korea.”

Of Pasechnik, Alibek says this: “He was behind some of our best work, devising a machine that turns viruses into a fine powder. It had been a huge breakthrough because it complemented another project, using cruise missiles to fly low over enemy territory, spraying out clouds of disease.”

Originally trained as a doctor, Alibek says he is holding himself accountable to the Hippocratic oath he ignored for so long. In July 2001, well before the September attacks, Alibek told New Scientist magazine that he was devoting his time to enhancing “innate immunity” in the respiratory tract.

“Our objective is to develop an inhaler containing micro-encapsulated cytokines to prevent degradation and toxicity. The inhaler could be used to treat people before a biological weapons attack and after they are exposed,” Alibek told New Scientist.

In a Frontline interview that aired October 13, 1998, on PBS, Alibek said that scientists at Biopreparat had specifically selected smallpox as a biological weapon because it was highly contagious and because it was a “dead” virus -- meaning in the future most people would not be vaccinated against it. When asked if the Russians would have vaccinated their citizens against smallpox before unleashing it, Alibek was grim.

“In my opinion,” he told Frontline, “nobody cared what would happen to the Russians because this weapon would be used just in case of a total war.”

Dark Winter

That’s just what U.S. government officials feared early last summer when representatives from several major departments met to stage a mini-war. Alibek was not the only person in the United States to realize that we need to develop a defense against biological weapons and these officials wanted a test to see if the U.S. could withstand a major biological attack.

They called their fake war “Dark Winter.” In the exercise, smallpox is discovered in Oklahoma and Georgia. State governments had to try and consolidate efforts with the federal government to ensure that the disease was not spread. The participants hoped to determine how each department would respond in a crisis situation. The results were grim.

“We, all in the room, were humbled by what we did not know and could not do and were convinced of the urgent need to better prepare our nation against this gruesome threat,” Margaret Hamburg, M.D., said in her July 23, 2001, testimony before the House Committee on Government Reform, following the Dark Winter exercise.

Hamburg participated in the exercise as the secretary of health and human services. Many Americans may be familiar with her name because, like Alibek, she appeared on many cable and network news shows following the September 11th and anthrax attacks last fall. Hamburg had previously been the New York City health commissioner when the World Trade Center was bombed in 1993 and also was an assistant secretary in the federal department of health and human services.

Hamburg also told the committee, “People should not be exchanging business cards on the first day of a crisis.”

Frank Keating, the current governor of Oklahoma, played himself in the exercise. Keating was also governor of Oklahoma in April 1995 when the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was bombed. Emergency response groups now look to Oklahoma’s response as the model of governmental efficiency during a crisis situation.

In his testimony before the House committee, Keating placed particular emphasis on the need to be open with the public and media and encouraged the committee to “resist the urge to federalize everything.”

Likewise, Senator Sam Nunn, who played the role of U.S. president, realized that both the nation as a whole and the individual states were ill-prepared to cope with biological warfare.

“In the evolution of warfare,” said Nunn, “arrows were countered with shields; swords with armor; guns with tanks; and now biological weapons must be countered with medicines, vaccines, and surveillance systems.”

All of the participants testified that the U.S. would have a long way to go before it would be ready to handle a biological attack. They all also testified that several legal hurdles currently stand in the way of officials, hurdles they believe need to be removed in advance.

Legislative Action

After the results of Dark Winter, and particularly after the September 11th attacks, federal policymakers decided that it was time to overcome these legal hurdles. A panel composed of law professors from Georgetown University and medical professors from Johns Hopkins University worked together to create a law to address the problems. After only 18 days of discussion, the Model Emergency Health Powers Act (MEHPA) was finished.

The act has since been introduced in every state legislature, where “Model” is replaced with the state’s name. In Tennessee, TEHPA (House Bill 2271/Senate Bill 2392) is currently being reviewed in committee.

However, nationwide left- and right-wingers alike are sounding off on MEHPA-based laws in Web chat rooms and bulletin boards. At issue are the vast and truly frightening powers the laws bestow upon state governors and their appointees.

Under MEHPA, and Tennessee’s TEHPA, a governor or his appointee, after declaring a “public health emergency,” has the power to take a number of actions. In the event of such an emergency, MEHPA allows each state to transform into something that would shock even George Orwell. The Model Emergency Health Powers Act allows officials to require an individual to be vaccinated. Anyone who refuses vaccination could be charged with a felony and forcibly quarantined. Likewise, it allows officials to require individuals to receive specific medical treatment or also be charged with a felony and quarantined. The state would also be allowed to seize any property, including real estate, deemed necessary to handle the emergency, and the property could be destroyed or retained without any compensation for the owner.

During a “public health emergency,” officials would be able to draft a person or business into state service and to impose rationing, price controls, quotas, and transportation controls. Any preexisting law thought to interfere with handling the emergency would be suspended. State governments would also be able to control the availability and distribution of medicines and vaccines and would be permitted to collect specimens from and perform tests on living persons.

Regardless of whether or not a connection exists between the dead microbiologists, between Don Wiley’s and Katherine Smith’s deaths, or between the events of September 11th and the anthrax attacks, the federal and state governments seem now at least to be aware of the threat of biological attack. What remains to be seen is how Americans will respond. And the links -- real or imagined -- between the rash of mysterious deaths? That’s a mystery even Mulder and Scully couldn’t solve.

laboratory - medical benefit questionable

(Austin and Hamburg, 9 October 2003) - The 'Spanish Flu' influenza
virus that killed 20-40 million people in 1918 is currently under
reconstruction. Several genes of the extraordinarily lethal 1918 flu
virus have been isolated and introduced into contemporary flu
strains. These proved to be lethal for mice, while virus constructs
with genes from a current flu virus types had hardly any effect.
These experiments may easily be abused for military purposes, but
provide little benefit from a medical or public health point of view.
