Ok, Lulu, I've been thinking about this halo thing for a couple of days. I would submit that with the explosion of air traffic over the past 50 years that there would surely be an increase in contrails. So it is certainly not out of the realm of possiblility that more halos have been observed because of this. The most important FACT that you must consider is that halos are visible because of ice crystals (water). Ie. there is no other substance that produces crystals the exact size and shape of water ice crystals. This implies very strongly that contrails are made up of nothing more than ice crystals (water). Now if you would like to argue that the crystals that cause halos are made of some other material, great. I would be very interested to find out whether or not the "chemicals" that are claimed to be in jet exhaust have the exact same crystal size and shape of those crystals made from water. F.K.

>>I would submit that with the explosion of air traffic over the past 50 years that there would surely be an increase in contrails. So it is certainly not out of the realm of possiblility that more halos have been observed because of this.<<FK I have only observed these halos in the past three years and not at all in the past six months. >>The most important FACT that you must consider is that halos are visible because of ice crystals (water).<< Then I assume there have been no ice crystals in the atmosphere over Kelowna in the past six months. >>This implies very strongly that contrails are made up of nothing more than ice crystals (water).<< The contrails I have observed in the past six months have dissipated within ten seconds. This is why I have seen no halos? Whereas during the 2 1/2 years prior the contrails spread and lingered for hours, and this is why I witnessed numerous halos? My question to you FK is do you think the absense of halos now is the result of less air traffic or a change in the atmosphere itself? or perhaps something else?

But whenever you see them, it is because of water. How was your weekend, by the way? I just had a joyous drive through a nebraska snow storm in a car with a busted heater. F.K.
