Hey Lulu,This is what it looks like to me
The red line is what I believe to be the boundry of an air mass that provides more suitable contrail forming conditions than the surrounding air. The blue arrows indicate my observations that there is substantially more air movement along the boundry than closer in the middle. You can see the results of this boundry wind by the contrail movement. I put yellow strips in where the contrails would be if there was no wind. This would create the normal "racetrack" oval pattern that KC-135s and AWACS aircraft fly during normal operations. But you can see that the boundry layer caused the contrail to be misformed close to the edge. Looks like a KC-135 doing a normal refeuling station orbit, and only half of the orbit track crossed into this air mass.

PHXPilot, I can't see your image. can you email it too me? as another possibility, the airplane may have been changing altitude during this manuver. from dry to warm or vise versa.F.K.

heres the direct link http://mediaservice.photoisland.com/auction/Apr/2003455028548278441111.jpg Now, remember, Give FKs interpretation much more credence than mine. Im not a meteorologist. FK is. Im just making a shot in the dark at what caused it. FK, what do you think happened?

I can see your explanation pic just fine PHXPilot. Thanks for your efforts. FK is this the extent of your thoughts? >>the airplane may have been changing altitude during this manuver. from dry to warm or vise versa. F.K.<<

Well, the pic shows up fine now. My pc must need an Enema. PHXPilot, Do planes tend to gain or lose altitude while performing this type of maneuver? Also, if the airplane is throttling up or down, will that change the character of the exaust/engine efficiency? Just looking at the pic, I would not say there was any kind of boundary aloft in this case. At least there is no visual evidence based on clouds though it is certainly not impossible. Are we sure the pic has not be "doctored?" It looks real to me so will give it the benifit of the doubt till I see otherwise. F.K.

Do planes tend to gain or lose altitude while performing this type of maneuver? Not usually, the whole point of the pattern is to stay in the same location so other planes can find you. It IS possible, though, that he changed the throttle setting once he came out of the turn. It looks like the wind may have given him a tailwind where there is no contrail visible. Since aircraft need to stay at the same speed for this entire manuever, he may have drop the exaust gas temp (EGT) by throttling back to maintain the speed when he got the tail wind. This drop in EGT may be enough to keep contrails from forming.
