HALO AND CONTRAILS: Not far from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on March 13th, Peg Staudenmaier looked up and saw a beautiful halo around the sun, criss-crossed by contrails. Look at the picture she took. Can you tell which is higher--the contrails or the halo? (continued below)
 Atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley has the answer: the contrails are higher. "Shadows of familiar objects thrown on high clouds confuse our eyes and brains. Contrary to appearances, these contrails are above a thin sheet of cloud and casting their shadows downward onto it. The ice crystals forming the 22º halo are in the cloud layer. The sharpness of the shadows shows that the layer is very thin indeed."

An aircraft chases its own contrail shadow.  The contrail crossed the sun and its needle-like shadow extrended well across the sky towards the antisolar point. The shadow was cast onto a smooth layer of cirrostratus cloud beneath the aircraft and whose ice crystals were forming weak halos. November 2nd 2002, sun 20° high. Photos ©2002 Les Cowley
