Just my 2 cents, but I think you are correct your pictures very much give the impression of being military craft of somekind as of course it would seem unlikely
for "commercial" passenger planes to be flying like that.

As for if their flights had anything to do with producing "trails" on purpose or not, or if they were just an artifact of vapor exhaust, you would be in a much better position to judge that than anyone not being actually able to see them being laid down and how they dispersed. Just from the look of the pictures I would guess that they are perhaps just ordinary contrails, but then again you were there, I wasn't. They show no sign in the pictures of attempting to expand, until they coat the whole sky a milky white, causing colored strands, and halos, and partial rainbows. Or did they?

That really is the key to chemtrail observing and identifying. Watching the whole picture unfold over hours perhaps days. In an area like here in Mid Missouri having lived here quite some time and having wacthed the sky forever, I have a good idea of expected activity, flight paths, and what a "control" backgound should look like for this area. When a "squadron" of the chemplanes come out and coat the sky ina clearly observable "operation" it is painfully obvious to see. So that's just my thoughts.
