At about 5:15 p.m., Monday, June 28, 2004, I saw the cloud depicted below. All of these photographs have been enhanced, to bring out detail.
It was almost directly overhead, over West Caldwell, New Jersey. Notice the indistinct, featureless quality about it. It looks more like a collection of ice crystals suddenly forming in one spot. Notice, though, the collection of more regular, alto-cumulus type shapes surrounding it. The close arrangement indicates there must be some connection! Not only have I never seen the indistict type cloud before, the combination of two so definitely different types of clouds seems utterly anomalous.
At about 5:40 p.m., Monday, afternoon, I saw the following sky in the south.
If the single cloud before was unusual, this was absolutely atypical! The number and size of indistinct ice crystal type clouds had increased, but, again, small cumulus like shapes seemed associated with them.
After about five minutes, the large ice crystal shapes had all but disappeared, leaving only the cumulus clouds in the sky.
After about another three minutes, however, another collection of ice crystal like clouds had formed!
Notice the line through two of them. This was apparently caused by a jet I saw leaving. By its size, it appeared to be no more than about 4 miles high! Shortly after this, another jet, that also seemed only about 4 miles high, came by, and disappeared behind several!
This means the ice crystal type clouds can't be more than about 4 miles up! This places them no higher than the middle layer of clouds, if not lower! This means that, even though they look like collections of suddenly freezing ice crystals, they aren't cirrus!
It does, though, bring up the question of why they formed. The day was warm, in the 80's, and only moderately humid. There wasn't any sign of cold air around. And, if there were any truly freezing air, how could the water droplet alto-cumulus type clouds keep their shape?
I have suggested, several times, that there seems to be a foreign substance being introduced into the atmosphere, to take the place of water in weather formation, at least under certain circumstances. This would act more readily than water in, for example, releasing heat to the surrounding air. But that could involve freezing out, into frozen crystal type clouds, when water wouldn't! In many cases before this, water may have been mixed with this new substance, in most clouds. This may be a case of the alien material being seen alone!
If others have seen anything like this, it could be interesting to hear.
