Condit, Kennedy, and Cable News

Thirty-two years ago this month, Sen. Ted Kennedy drove off a bridge on Martha's Vineyard, and his traveling companion, Mary Jo Kopechne, drowned in the Chappaquiddick pond.

What the heck they were doing out in a desolate area late at night has never been explained -- that is, if you don't buy the senator's explanation that they took a wrong turn. And it took Kennedy hours to report the incident, even though a prompt call might have saved Ms. Kopechne had there been an air pocket in the car.

At the time, the big three TV network news broadcasts did cover the story, but not aggressively. Kennedy's lawyers spun, and the TV reporters recorded their words. The Vineyard police said it was clearly a tragic accident in which no one was culpable, and the TV guys wrote it all down.

In the end, Kennedy skated. He was embarrassed, and his presidential ambitions were crippled, but a few years later, it was all water under the bridge.

Now we have the Gary Condit-Chandra Levy story, which contains similarities to Chappaquiddick. Once again, a member of Congress is in the spotlight, and a young woman could very possibly be dead. And once again, the establishment media is having trouble with the situation.

I was amazed to learn that, as of this writing, "The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" had not even covered the story, according to Associated Press television writer David Bauder. In the more than two months since Chandra Levy disappeared, ABC's "The World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" has covered the story only twice.

Of course, the cable news networks have done hundreds of reports -- so many that, at times, it is painful to watch. My program "The O'Reilly Factor" has been leading the charge.

Apparently the powers that be at CBS News and ABC News see the Condit-Levy story as much ado about sex. And sex is not welcome on the national evening news. If those entities were parents, the human race would die out.

But, of course, the Condit-Levy matter is much more than sex. The story is about a congressman lying to the police about a very serious matter and bringing immense pain to the family of a missing young woman. If the evening news people don't get that, what can I tell you?

Ted Kennedy is lucky there were no cable news networks back in 1969. If there were, he and the inept Martha's Vineyard cops would have been under tremendous pressure. Just like Gary Condit is today.

Do you think Condit would have finally admitted his affair with Ms. Levy if the media hadn't pounded him for two months? Do you think the bungling D.C. cops actually would have begun investigating the situation if the cable press hadn't brutally criticized the department? If you answered yes to those questions, please send your resume to the network news people.

The Condit-Levy story is tawdry, no question about it. But that is no reason to ignore it. A powerful congressman misleading authorities who are trying to find a missing girl is no small matter. And what about those authorities? They're terrific, aren't they? It took the New York Post to uncover a key piece of evidence -- that Ms. Levy made a flurry of cell phone calls to Condit just before she disappeared. Perhaps the D.C. police should turn the investigation over to the Post.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting tired of bad police work. O.J. Simpson, JonBenet Ramsey, Robert Blake and now Chandra Levy. How about some case cracking -- OK, people? There are too many homicides going unsolved these days. If the cops can't figure out who killed a 6-year-old girl in her own home, what can they figure out?

Say what you want about media overkill on the cable news outlets -- and the pun is not intended. But without us, high-profile crime stories would be even harder to solve. Something bad happened to Chandra Levy. Something bad happened to Mary Jo Kopechne. And you'll never find out what happened or why if you are locked in on the network evening news.

I think you're right, T/S. The media and the D.C. Police Department have been playing softball with this joker for far too long.

The problem is that these types of investigations become politicized becaue of the suspects status in society. Any time you wind up playing politics with a politician, you're going to wind with the short end of the stick.

You wanna know how this case would get solved in the REAL WORLD?

Let's say you've got a robbery/homicide case. Some street dealer gets whacked and the only desrciption of the suspect you've got is B/M/A, appx. 6', 180 lbs, 18-30 YO.

Now, there's probably a couple hundred criminals on your beat that match that desription. But you happened to see some smartass gangmember in the general vicinty of the homicide. Maybe he's beat you in court on a couple of cases. Maybe he ditched some rock during a foot pursuit last week. Whatever. You're pissed off and he's got no special plans for the next 15-20 years.

So you get an informant. Maybe someone from a rival gang with an axe to grind with your 'suspect'. Maybe he's got his own case pending and you 'work something out' in exchange for his 'testimony'.

Yeah sure, your Honor. I was standing right there when Loco cruised up and started blastin'. Man, he crazy.

Half the time your suspect is going to plead the case out because he knows he's screwed.

You get the stat, the DA gets the conviction and another criminal is off the streets for a little while. Everybody's happy.

And that's the way it works in the real world. Think I'm exaggerating to make a point? Do a little research into the Rampart division scandal. Try doing a Googlesearch on Ofc. Perez, LAPD.

The problem is the police have forgotten how to legitimately investigate crimes. Who want's to screw with a powerful congressman for the next five years when you can slam dunk some crackhead in a couple of months?

WASHINGTON - Private lives matter, in the intelligence world to which Rep. Gary Condit enjoys special access.

As a member of the House intelligence committee, Condit oversees some of the nation's most sensitive secrets. Usually, Americans are privy to such information only after an extensive background investigation. But as a congressman selected for the intelligence panel, Condit enjoys privileged access without being subjected to investigators' standard questions about his private life.

"The (background investigators') concern is about behavior that might make an individual vulnerable to blackmail or coercion, such as behavior that someone feels compelled to conceal," said Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists.

Washington detectives now want to subject Condit to his first lie-detector test, as part of their investigation into the disappearance of Washington intern Chandra Levy. Their questions won't be the same as those asked by security investigators. But the ongoing police probe and new allegations about Condit's private life do shed new light on how a public man's private behavior can intersect with national security interests.

In particular, the allegations that Condit had affairs with both Levy and flight attendant Anne Marie Smith - and took special pains to keep those affairs secret - showcases some highly specific guidelines for security clearances.

As a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Condit, a California Democrat, automatically has access to information for which security clearances with names like Top Secret and Special Compartmentalized Intelligence normally apply.

Guideline D of the federal government's "Adjudicative Guidelines for Determining Eligibility for Access to Classified Information specifically notes that "sexual behavior is a security concern if ... it may subject the individual to undue influence or coercion, exploitation or duress, or reflects lack of judgment or discretion."

Some intelligence veterans are now stacking up these usual stringent requirements for security clearances against the current allegations concerning Condit's behavior.

Condit has not addressed Smith's allegations that they'd had a 10-month affair. He has disputed her claim that he tried to get her to lie about it. Condit's staff formerly denied he had an affair with Levy. Now, his spokespersons neither admit nor deny an affair took place but say the important issue is to focus on finding Levy.

Mike Lynch, Condit's chief of staff, referred questions about intelligence committee matters to the intelligence committee staff, which did not return calls seeking comment.

Condit did not have to face any background questions when House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt named him to the House intelligence panel in 1999. Like all members of the select panel, Condit essentially was granted a courtesy clearance. For lawmakers, standards like Guideline D don't apply.

"Members are automatically cleared for access to almost all the information developed by the various intelligence community agencies," said David Skaggs, a former Democratic congressman from Colorado who served on the House intelligence committee.

Condit and his fellow committee members keep a deliberately low profile. They meet in what is essentially the soundproof attic of the Capitol, where guards and locks are common but windows are not. Committee members, including Condit, have typically voted to keep secret matters like the total currently being spent on intelligence gathering.

"For all practical purposes, you're in a vault," Skaggs said.

Condit had no prior military or intelligence agency experience. He was named to the panel by Gephardt as a sign of respect, as well as a sign of leadership outreach to the conservative Democratic faction Condit helps lead.

"He's a valued member of the committee, and I count on him," said Rep. Porter Goss, the Florida Republican who chairs the panel. "He asks what I would call questions on behalf of the American taxpayer ... and he has a great deal of common sense."

In addition to authorizing the intelligence community's budget, estimated to be about $30 billion a year, the 20-member panel conducts oversight hearings. Non-lawmakers who want to know such sensitive information need not only a background investigation, but also, sometimes, a lie-detector test and periodic re-investigation.

I consider it highly unlikely that this man will ever be prosecuted, for anything.

CONGRESSMAN
GARY CONDIT:
GAYS, BISEXUALS AND MURDER

By: John LeBoutillier

Editor's note: The following article appeared Friday, July 13, 2001 on NewsMax.com. After being a headliner for most of the day, the article was mysteriously pulled without explanation. For the benefit of our readers who have inquired on this matter, here is the article in its entirety.

Yesterday I spoke to "RJ” – an inside-the-Beltway source who, over the years, has never steered me wrong. RJ said, "John, do you know the true story of Gary Condit?”
RJ continued then proceeeded to outline a scenario for what happened in this case:"Condit has been known inside the gay community here in DC for being a big, big user of gay male prostitutes – especially blacks from the Caribbean who ride motorcycles and love to wear black leather.

"Condit lives in Adams Morgan – a terrible commute to and from the Hill – and it is a notorious neighborhood for gays and bisexuals.

"Now, here is the dirty little secret behind the disappearance of Chandra Levy: Condit goes both ways. He likes to get sodomized by male prostitutes before having sex with women. The gay sex turns him on and he can then "perform” with women.

"Condit had one particular Caribbean male prostitute that he frequented. When it was determined that Chandra had to go, this guy was given the assignment. He picked her up on his motorcycle, took off some where, killed her, and dumped her body. Then, on orders from Condit and with money from Condit, he headed back to Haiti or wherever he came from – far, far away from investigators and the Feds.”

The media has heard all of this - but has yet to report it. The other night, both Michael Issikoff of Newsweek and Tom Squitieri of USA TODAY referred to "dark aspects of this story that we can’t report yet.”

Other media players are aware of all of this – and more: apparently Condit liked three-ways and even four-ways with himself, the male gay prostitute and two women.

Some of his girlfriends obviously knew of this over the years; some participated in the three-way sex. This explains his absolute paranoia over any of the girls ever talking about their relationships with him. And it explains the fear we are now hearing about from not just the flight attendant, Anne Marie Smith, but others, too.

This also explains why Abbe Lowell only wants one or two questions asked on the lie detector, such as, "Do you know what happened to Chandra?” Condit probably does not know - on purpose - what the gay male prostitute did with her – so he might very well successfully pass that question on a lie detector test.

No wonder Lowell doesn’t want wide-ranging questions. All of this horrible mess would soon be revealed and confirmed.

As for Chandra leaving her apartment with only her keys? As RJ put it, "Perhaps the only time a woman would leave her purse behind would be to ride on the back of a motorcycle.”

Now, the big questions are these:

1) Is the FBI honestly investigating this absolutely perverted behavior and this scenario?

2) Do the Feds have the guts to pursue such a sick scenario?

3) Does the media – many of who already know much of this – report it – and expose this sick bisexual and gay behavior? Recently the Mainstream Media loves to portray gay victims of violent crime but often ignores gay perpetrators of violent crime. Will the media put aside their Politically Correct view of bi-sexualism and prostitution and tell the truth here?

4) Will the Feds track down this gay male black prostitute – or multiple gay prostitutes – who have had dealings with Condit?

If RJ’s scenario if accurate then poor Chandra – and other Condit girlfriends – have fallen into the sickest group of perverts imaginable.

No wonder Condit, representing a conservative district, went bananas every time one of his girlfriends talked.

Buckle your seatbelts: things are going to explode soon.
