Half a mile wide! Is that an f-4? (I forget how high that scale goes)..Tornados have always fascinated me, and I've had dreams and nightmares about them since I was a kid, even though I live in a state where they're very rare. There is just something so eerily Tasmanian Devilish about them...

Goes to F-5.. then theres the theoritical F-6.. They say it would be so strong they would not even be able to tell there was an F-6 tornado because it would be surrounded by F-4s and 5s.

the may 3rd tornado had wind speeds of 318 mph the fastest windspeed ever recorded on earth...it was classified as a f-5 (fugita scale) only because the scale doesn't go any higher... also mesocyclone of the may 3rd tornado had rotation area of over 3 miles wide...

Q: How about the highest winds measured in a tornado?A: On May 3, 1999, scientists using a Doppler on Wheels radar measured the fastest wind speed ever recorded, 318 mph, in one of the tornadoes that hit the suburbs of Oklahoma City. Before that, another portable Doppler radar had recorded a 288 mph wind in the Red Rock, Okla., tornado of April 26, 1991.

Well one thing you can say about that...if it ever came by your place, you probably wouldn't have to worry about painting the house again? Why is it tornados seem to have a magnetic attraction to trailer parks?

floridaTornado Destroys About 500 Florida Homes 1 hour, 29 minutes ago Add U.S. National RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - About 500 homes were damaged or destroyed by a tornado that touched down Thursday in north Palm Beach County, flipping semitrailers, snapping power poles and tearing roofs off businesses. Only minor injuries were reported.
Most of the damage took place north of West Palm Beach. At the Garden Walk mobile home park, the tornado collapsed the roofs and walls of several homes and pushed others off their foundations. At least two tractor-trailers nearby were tossed upside down. About 21,000 people were without electricity in Palm Beach County. Power was out in most of Riviera Beach, where reports of damage were extensive. The roof of a Pepsi-Cola plant was torn off, heavy rain caused street flooding and closed roads, and looting was reported in the storm's wake.
At Driftwood Plaza in nearby Jupiter, a metal roof covering 32 stores was damaged, said Tammy Goodwin, owner of the Coastal Massage Day Spa.
"We were right in it," she said. "Pieces of the roof were flying off. A pole came down. There was a lot of damage, a lot of debris. Things were flying."
Red Cross spokeswoman Laura Botting said two shelters had been opened in Palm Beach County as of 9 p.m., and that other shelters may open if needed.
The weather service said the tornado was spotted at 5:13 p.m. and cleared out by 5:40 p.m. Forecasters were surprised by the rapid development of the system.
"It caught us," forecaster Bob Ebaugh said.
