The Smoking Gun On Pearl Harbor
From Brasscheck

For years, it's been rumored that FDR was aware of Japan's plans to attack Pearl Harbor, yet actively denied commanders there any intelligence on the subject.

A smoking gun has been found that supports this theory.

Months before the "surprise" attack which launched the war that gave Roosevelt dictatorial powers, top officials of the Red Cross - individuals with close ties to Roosevelt - quietly ordered large quantities of medical supplies and experienced medical personnel shipped to Hawaii.

Recently, the daughter of one of these officials revealed that her father told her he had attended the the top secret White House meeting on the matter. At this meeting he was told both that an attack was expected and he was not to share with the information with anyone.

Whether or not her recollection is accurate, the mystery of the Red Cross' sudden and substantial infrastructure investment behalf of the well being of the people of Hawaii is documented. The US Army worked with the Red Cross to secure warehouse space for the supplies....BEFORE the "surprise" attack.

The news that the National Cancer Institute had finally released its report on the health effects of radioactive fallout from nuclear testing is only a few days old. We will be updating this page with new links to informational and support services for victims and survivors of the atomic testing of the Cold War era. Please check our list of articles and related links at the bottom of this page. We are in the process of developing this list and will be adding more shortly, so please check back regularly.

But first, please read the two statements below:

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) today (8/01/97) admitted that fallout from the 1950's atomic bomb tests blanketed the nation at levels far inexcess of what the government has admitted to now or in past decades. In its statement it said there could be between 10,000 and 75,000 cases of thyroid cancer among those exposed. They remain firm in their stance that there is no certain link between exposure and effect -- still apparently having not yet heard about, nor read the results of studies of the thyroid cancers and disorders found among the Marshall Island Natives and the residents surrounding Chernobyl. The NCI puts these numbers out as "the worst case scenario."

Speaking for those most heavily exposed to those atomic tests, and well as from an awareness of continued health problems and deaths, we would like to state for the record just what the "real" worst case scenario is. The worst case scenario is not that the NCI can't find a link between dose and effect, no federal agency involved with public health has ever done so, or better yet ever wanted to. It is the fact that the cat is now out of the bag and off and running. The dilemma is not worrying about dose and effect, but how the federal government responsible for the exposures in the first place can quickly catch the cat and get it back in the bag. Sorry Folks, "We won't be fooled again!"

The real worst case for the American people is that the Iodine 131 radioactive isotope that is the basis of this study is only one of scores produced by the fissioning process that powered these test devices. Absent from the study are such isotopes as Strontium 90, Cesium 137, Zirconium, and on and on. These all have half-lives much longer than those of Iodine 131,with many still in existence today. Many of these like Strontium 90 seek out tissues of the body and there become lodged and remain for the lifetime of the persons exposed. Strontium 90 for instance seeks the bones, and from there radiates the fragile marrow cells that produce the bulk of human blood. Such exposures can lead to leukemia and other cancers. The worst case is that if the Iodine 131 resulted in 10,000 to 75,000 cases of thyroid cancer alone, how many cases did the other isotopes produce, and of those hundreds of thousands of cases that they would induce, how many innocent, unwitting, and unsuspecting Americans died?

What is needed is not more time for the scientists at the NCI to figure out what the "story" is. They have had 14 years on this study so far as it is, and are releasing it now, not in the interests of the public, but because somebody leaked it to the press and they got caught. What is needed now is for a large dose of the truth, and the leadership to order it be given the American people.

We call on President Clinton, to do just that, stop the denials, and release all the information concerning the fallout exposures and resulting health effects from Nevada bomb tests, and most importantly to issue an executive order to insure this type of situation never happens again.

In view of possible implications of the information released August 1, 1997 by the National Cancer Institute to the health of those persons exposed to fallout from 1950's atomic bomb tests, Downwinders feel it is important to issue the following advisory:

Downwinders take strong exception to the position of the National Cancer Institute and other federal agencies concerning a clear linkbetween exposure to Iodine 131 from bomb test fallout and thyroid cancer. We call on the NCI to reconsider their position in light of the data and documentation currently available to the public on the health problems suffered by the natives of the Marshall Islands (also exposed to U.S. bomb test fallout during the 1950's), the residents surrounding the testing sites of the former Soviet Union in Kazakhstan and in the Russian Federation, and those exposed to the fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl accident (especially children.)

We are deeply offended by the fact that both the National Cancer Institute and a host of other federal agencies have withheld this information from the American public for decades, and that this information wasreleased now only because the agencies had no choice after it was leaked to the press. Therefore Downwinders demand a comprehensive investigation into such clearly unacceptable behavior. Downwinders fully expects the same agencies to do all within their power to try to minimize the public outcry generated by the release of this information. We wish to make clear Downwinders will fight any actions to make light of this issue in the strongest and most vocal manner.

Nevertheless, Downwinders feels it is important to ask the American public not to view this new information with panic, or unnecessary fear and anxiety, even among those from known hot spots of potential high-risk. Downwinders would strongly advise all persons in such areas to please notify your personal medical care providers of this information during your next regular visit, and to discuss this matter with them. In addition we strongly advise all Americans, no matter what their radiation exposures may have been, to become familiar with the various self-help practices available in order to provide early warning of potential thyroid problems, and to learn to use them as a matter of common sense.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) has made available on their website step by step instructions on a self-thyroid examination, and provided additional information on the human thyroid and its diseases. We strongly advise all Americans to take the time to visit this site, and learn what actions they can take to protect their personal health and well being! Please take the time now to visit the site at,

Once again Downwinders would advise anyone concerned about possible thyroid problems to discuss the matter with the health care provider of their choice!
check out the chart, were you in the path?

Fighting for the truth . . . exposing the corrupt

Representative Jack Metcalf of the State of Washington revealed in a report Thursday that the FDA found squalene in the anthrax vaccine being forced upon the U.S. military on pain of court martial and/or dishonorable discharge.

The FDA confirmed the presence of squalene in the anthrax vaccine by using a more sensitive test than one used by the Pentagon. Squalene is NOT an FDA-approved substance and its consequences on health are unknown. As a vaccine booster ingredient, it is thought to increase immunity, but its use has been denied time and again by the Pentagon. Congressman Metcalf again called on the Pentagon to immediately HALT the anthrax vaccine program until the squalene source is identified and its health consequences studied.

The revelation on squalene more clearly establishes that the Pentagon may be conducting "medical experiments" on service members. Other Congressional hearings have already established that the Pentagon conducted de facto experiments because it avoided organization-level FDA review before changing the way the vaccine is used and administered.

The exodus of hundreds of military members, including many officers and skilled pilots, over the vaccine demonstrates the gravity of this issue as it relates to Pentagon "integrity" and the overall national defense capability. Young people thinking of joining the military may decline a tour or career when faced with such questionable and risky employment treatment. The recruiting impacts of this issue are highlighted by House and Senate Armed Services Committee testimony that the military may need up to 50,000 more members to meet current global obligations.

More information on the anthrax vaccine policy will be made at the Service Member Support rally in Philadelphia this Saturday, Sept 30th at noon, the Widener Building, One South Penn Square.

The "NO ABUSE" organization was established out of concern that the Department of Defense (DOD) mandatory anthrax vaccine policy represents another episode in a legacy of questionable and often harmful medical practices. Many service member relatives, as well as military, medical, legal, and policy experts assisted the House Government Reform Oversight and other Congressional Committees as they investigated the anthrax vaccine in nearly a dozen hearings during the past 18 months. These citizens determined a formal organization was necessary to address the anthrax vaccine, the planned DOD Joint Vaccine Acquisition Program (JVAP), and other related military health matters on a long-term proactive basis.

The NO ABUSE (a non-profit organization) address is:

P.O. Box 70186,
Washington, D.C. 20024-0186,
Redmond H. Handy, President.

His Email address is:

Declassified Documents Point To
US War Crimes In Iraq
By Stephen Gowans
2001 Steve Gowans

The United States is knowingly violating Article 54 of the Geneva Convention which prohibits any country from undermining "objects indispensable to the survival of (another country's) civilian population," including drinking water installations and supplies, says Thomas Nagy, a business professor at George Washington University.

Writing in the September 2001 issue of The Progressive, Nagy cites recently declassified documents that show the United States was aware of the civilian health consequences of destroying Iraq's drinking water and sanitation systems in the Gulf War, and knew that sanctions would prevent the Iraqi government from repairing the degraded facilities.

During the Gulf War, coalition forces bombed Iraq's eight multi-purpose dams, destroying flood control systems, irrigation, municipal and industrial water storage, and hydroelectric power. Major pumping stations were targeted, and municipal water and sewage facilities were destroyed.

Article 54 of the Geneva Convention prohibits attacks on "drinking water installations and supplies and irrigation works."

Nagy says that not only did the United States deliberately destroy drinking water and sanitation facilities, it knew sanctions would prevent Iraq from rebuilding, and that epidemics would ensue.

One document, written soon after the bombing, warned that sanctions would prevent Iraq from importing "water treatment replacement parts and some essential chemicals" leading to "increased incidences, if not epidemics, of disease."

Another document lists the most likely diseases: "diarrheal diseases (particularly children); acute respiratory illnesses (colds and influenza); typhoid; hepatitis A (particularly children); measles, diphtheria, and pertussis (particularly children); meningitis, including meningococcal (particularly children); cholera (possible, but less likely.)"

Then U.S. Navy Secretary John Lehman estimated that 200,000 Iraqis died in the Gulf War, but many more have died since. UNICEF estimates that well over a million Iraqis have died as a result of the U.S-led sanctions regime, in place for the last decade. Some 500,000 children have died, and an estimated 4,000 die from various preventable, sanctions-related diseases, every month, says the U.N. agency.

Despite the massive human toll, the United States continues to support the sanctions regime, arguing that sanctions won't be lifted until U.N. inspectors are free to return to Iraq to verify that the country has rid itself of weapons of mass destruction.

American Scott Ritter, a former U.N. arms inspector, claims that Iraq is effectively disarmed, and has been for some time.

And deaths from sanctions exceed those from weapons of mass destruction. Political scientists John and Karl Mueller say that sanctions have "contributed to more deaths during the post Cold War era than all the weapons of mass destruction throughout history," including deaths at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

At one point, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said that despite the civilian deaths the sanctions were "worth it."

Meanwhile, Israel, a U.S. ally in the region, is widely believed to have an arsenal of 200 nuclear weapons. While in violation of countless U.N. Resolutions ordering its withdrawal from the Occupied Territories, Israel faces no sanctions and no order to disarm. Amnesty International, which has warned that Israel's crackdown on the latest Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, borders on war crimes, recently condemned Tel Aviv for its "utter disregard for human life in the Occupied Territories" and for its violations of international law. And yet even calls for intervention as mild as placing international observers in the Occupied Territories have been rebuffed.

The Gulf War erupted after Iraq invaded neighboring Kuwait. After the war, the United Nations imposed sanctions, ordering Iraq to disarm. Iraq's violation of international law in invading its neighbor was cited for the harsh treatment. But critics of the policy say that punishment for violations of international law are being meted out unevenly and hypocritically. Israel's innumerable transgressions go unpunished, while governments that have fallen out with Washington, often over investment or debt repayment issues, are treated severely.

Moreover, say critics, the United States itself has a long track record of violating international law. Washington's undermining of Iraq's water treatment and sanitation facilities in violation of the Geneva Convention is just one of many recent transgressions, including the bombing of Yugoslavia, Sudan, Afghanistan, and the continued bombing of Iraq.

U.S.-led NATO forces also targeted civilian infrastructure in Yugoslavia. At one point, U.S. Air Force General Michael Short explained that NATO's bombing campaign was aimed at causing misery in the civilian population. "If you wake up in the morning," said Short, "and you have no power to your house and no gas to your stove and the bridge you take to work is down and will be lying in the Danube for the next 20 years, I think you begin to ask, 'Hey, Slobo, what's this all about? How much more of this do we have to withstand?'"

NATO forces used depleted uranium munitions in Yugoslavia, as did coalition forces in Iraq. Depleted uranium may be toxic, and may be responsible for an epidemic of cancers and birth defects that have arisen in Iraq over the last decade. Some have charged that Gulf War syndrome, a cluster of mysterious and debilitating illnesses suffered by U.S. and allied soldiers, is related to depleted uranium. Others point to the contamination of soil, water and air by carcinogenic effluent from destroyed industrial facilities and chemical plants as being responsible.

Nagy says that what is most disturbing about the documents is that they reveal a U.S. government concerned more with the potential negative publicity of the deaths, than with the deaths themselves. Dealing with the public relations downside of massive killing is a common theme in U.S. foreign policy. During the Gulf War a bomb that hit a marketplace and killed civilians led CBS News correspondent Dan Rather to remark: "We can be sure that Saddam Hussein will make propaganda of these casualties." Frequent reference is made in the documents Nagy has uncovered to the potential for Iraq to use epidemics for propaganda purposes.

When Nagy sent the documents to the media last fall, only two reporters wrote lengthy articles. One was Felicity Arbuthnot, who wrote in Scotland's The Sunday Herald that the "US-led allied forces deliberately destroyed Iraq's water supply during the Gulf War flagrantly breaking the Geneva Convention and causing thousand of civilian deaths." Despite the seriousness of the allegations, and their being backed up by official documents, the story quickly fizzled.

Mr. Steve Gowans is a writer and political activist who lives in Ottawa, Canada.

Very interesting stories you've posted here David...

I was especially interested in the story about radiation and thyroid cancer since my thyroid isn't in the best of shape... luckily I've been checked and it isn't cancer.

Had a chance to take a look at the chart for where fallout was the heaviest. It was interesting to note that the state of Idaho and Montana showed the highest levels.
The way I understand it... these tests occurred in Nevada mostly am I right? Makes me wonder if the wind patterns still blow the same today as they did back in the 50's.

So from the links you posted, is the supposed warning of the bombing of Pearl Harbor based on a memo from 10 months previous to the incident - a memo that did not list any time frame for the attack?

Seems to me that, based on this memo, it would have been prudent for the government to prepare for a worse-scenario, which eventually happend 10 motnhs later.

Oh, oh... got me, I do watch TV (not at the moment though). Usually I watch 'news' related stuff (if you can call it that), just to see what kind of BS TPTB are trying to sell us. I'm almost as brainwashed as your average viewer in some ways, advertising techniques work on you even when you're aware of them, I think.

"It's insanity." doubt about that!
