I would like to take a poll as to the effect the WTC fiasco has had personally in your lives.
My life was severely affected, because I do not have work right now because of the events that happened that day. I was working for a land developer/builder who was putting in a new neighborhood in an upper middleclass area. (yeah, I'm a construction worker hehehe) I loved what I did, which was all the staining/polying and painting of the trim in all these new houses, the detail work. Now he has stopped building, and the new neighborhood will stay only halfway completed. The other half will go up if and when people feel safe with the economy, and start buying the houses that he has already built. For now, no more,,, and that was to be my work which would have lasted me into the spring.

KnewEyes, I'm sorry to hear that this has hurt your work. I'm a programmer, work is about the same afterwards as before.

I'm sorry to hear it, too, KnewEyes. My husband is a physician, working with kids who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and/or learning disabilities. His waiting list for new patients is actually longer than usual. So we aren't feeling economic effects from 9/11. But Lubbock's economy isn't based on the aerospace industry or tourism, so that probably helps.

The immediate effect of the attacks was that my wife and I had already started packing for our three-week 10th anniversary vacation to Greece and Turkey. We were to leave via Lufthansa on the morning of September 13th. Needless to say, all flights were cancelled, and we have still not got all our money back (we'd pre-paid for the whole trip).Since the attack, my company has laid off or announced plans for the layoff of about thirty thousand workers, most of whom are/were in the commercial aircraft group in Washington and California. Since I work in the military aircraft and missiles group, our own area has not been seriously affected, although we had to cancel several business trips in October.

Knew Eyes: My full-time job for the past year or so has been wife/mother. Thankfully, my husband changed jobs (out of the development/construction industry) a couple of days before 911. We are downsizing/simplifying our lives. The biggest effect this has had on me is that it is a bad time to be buying/selling houses. I'm sorry this has affected you so much.Duncan, I'm sorry you didn't get to go on your anniversary trip, any plans to rescedule?

The 9-11 fiasco has affected my job too. I'm an auto technician, people don't want to to spend money now, since we're in a recession. And if i'm not working while at work, i'm not making any money.

Penumbra, not any time soon. However, we're planning to go for a three-day trip right after Christmas to Zion National Park, which is one of our favorite places; we try to go whenever we have four days or so off.Plus, it's a whole lot cheaper!! ------------------

most certainly the time to buy a house...spend if you can but other than buying a house, going in debt over anything else is a serious mistake....the clinton recession was in full swing in july 01 and I made moves to get out or control more, or basically redefine money lines really...the economy was showing some signs of coming back before 9/11 and it really threw a wrench in things for those like me and apparently cougar too...when your in the business of "extras" a non-spending consumer is a problem.... I've seen a 3/4 reduction in my business...3 years ago I was working 7 days a week 12:00 to 7:00 to keep up with the demand... btw sorry to hear about your biz kneweyes, I just got done with painting, tile, and some trim carpentry on my Mom's house...that's hard work but rewarding... gotta keep strokin' anyway.... T/S

Thanks penumbra,and seeker. Yes, its hard but rewarding work, cause I get to be creative, and nobodys breathing down my neck!

I have a tenant who is a builder---He has run into problems---Noone is buying anymore. But the economy is bouncing back. Since 9/11, I have not been able to sleep. I do not want to face what I know will be a horrible nightmare should I be able to get my eyes closed and fall into sleep. It's one hour there, two hours here. I try sleeping sitting up. I got cramps last night in my leg. I did get down on the ground in my cellar and curled up for a minute. It felt okay for once. I guess I haven't been able to face the enormity of what happened.

Gee Dave, that doesn't sound too good. Maybe you should get in touch with your Dr. and see if there is anything he can do to help you with your anxiety, and insomnia. Nobody should go that long with that type of discomfort. Good Luck to you Dave.

I did get hold of my doctor. He gave me something but it doesn't help as I would like it to. I am into overwhelming denial about the full impact of this as it affects me. It seems the main problem is the isolation I feel has been imposed on us by the government's official reaction to this themselves. They are so intent on finding and punishing whoever might be in the least bit connected with this. This is just overwhelming fear and paranoia about my own attitude toward this. There has been nothing this big in my lifetime outside the A bomb and that happened to the Japanese not Americans. I was too young at the time to know what had happened but lived the fear of the coldwar until they stopped putting it out there. I sort of feel this is all a BIG LIE but there's nothing I can do about it until the media stop with the lying. You have to make some kind of adjustment to the media or you'll be a fish out of water. Well, not sure if WTC had a *direct* effect on what's happened to me, but I used to work at Enron.  I got laid off during the first wave of ~4,500 employees in the beginning of December. I fix computers when they break and am looking for anything in desktop support or helpdesk in the Houston, TX area. So if anyone knows anyone, HOLLER! LOL! ------------------

My business is primarily broadcasting and advertising and my husband is a general contractor. We also own rental properites. All have been aflicted, mostly by the Klinton recession and made worse by 9/11. Advertising is always the first budget to get the ax when folks are nervous. Our area of the state is both tourism and defense contractors so it trickles down to many levels. Patrick airforce base had a major highway (A1A by the ocean) closed from 9/11 till 01/09 that hurt many more businesses in the area. The economy will rebound but the instability of nations might keep people nervous enough for this to go on for sometime. David, something that you might try is as as simple as reading the bible and meditating on the word of God. I'm not trying to be preachy it's just really helped me in the past. Prayer and deep breathing can help too. Duncan, hope the delayed anniversary trip didn't delay the "celebration". Ahhhh, the perks of marriage.
