Dear Peacemakers,
Wagepeace Peace Walk:
Our peace walk plans are all very preliminary, but the idea is to have an ALL faith peace walk on September 11th of this year. The walk will be an extremely peaceful counter response to the violence of 9/11. We will begin the day at dawn with a candlelight Sunrise Service including members of all faiths (spiritual and otherwise) speaking words of wisdom, faith, love, and compassion near the reflection pond in Herman Park. Later that day we will have a walk between as many houses of faith and peacemaking as is physically possible. In the evening of that same day we hope to have an ALL faith peace service at the Miller outdoor theater. The idea is to bring unity to all members of all religious and peacemaking communities. The key message is that we are ONE IN THE SPIRIT OF LOVE AND PEACE.
HPJC Peace Social - Tonight @ 7:00 pm @ the Next Door Coffee House
Our peace social this month will be very modest as I have been focusing nearly all my time on career issues. In fact, I'm looking for volunteers to host the peace social as my time schedule has been virtually eclipsed due to economic concerns.
I will be showing a Bill Moyer's special entitled "Trading Democracy" at the Coffee House tonight @ 7:00 pm.
<-- Trading Democracy Introduction -->
Everyone's heard about NAFTA — the North American Free Trade Agreement — and all the talk about jobs. But almost no one heard about one obscure section of NAFTA — Chapter 11 — except for multinational corporations who are using it to challenge democracy.
Chapter 11 is only one provision in the 555-page North American Free Trade Agreement — negotiated to promote business among the US, Canada and Mexico. It was supposedly written to protect investors if foreign governments tried to seize their property.
But corporations have stretched NAFTA's Chapter 11 to undermine environmental decisions — the decisions of local communities — even the verdict of an American jury. The cases brought so far total almost four billion dollars.
