Hubby is running for City Council, and I'm in charge of organizing the poll watchers. This is an interesting experience. We have to be there when the polls open, if we leave any time during the 12 hours we can't come back, and we can't take pictures or tape record anything.

Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing? Any advice?

Have a clear answer for those you question that are leaving the polls. A few years ago I was in a small group leaving the polls and we were approached by surveyors. When we asked what our answers were going to be used for they said they didn't know. It really hurt the participation. Most people we saw declined to be interviewed.

Good luck! Is Mr. 3 running as a Libertarian?

Oops! I meant that we will be monitoring the polling places for fraud, not doing exit polls. Lubbock has--would you believe--a Republican party "machine" which doesn't want to see the status quo disturbed in any way. It will be okay with the poll watchers if people vote early, but not if they vote often.

The City Council elections are nonpartisan, but yes, FLKook, he's running on Libertarian principles. He has pledged NEVER to vote for a tax increase in any form. No wonder the Republicans are afraid. (In case you're confused, there are essentially no Democratic politicians in Lubbock. They almost always lose, so the Libertarians are the only competition for the "machine.")

After I replied to your post, I thought about it and wondered if you hadn't meant safe guarding the process.

What little faith I have in the Republican party can only be diminished by (especially our local) Democrats. Sounds like hubby would have my vote.
